THE SUBTLETIES OF AD HOMINEM
I have been out of the practice of writing reflective posts since devoting more time to rescue work, but reading the IGS reminds me of the need for all of us to be more reflective. Today's relfection is on the use of "ad hominem" "against the man" "against the woman" fallacies on the IGS.
I don't know if I have ever met anyone who has any convictions or strong feelings about their values who doesn't use some ad hominem from time to time. It is the most difficult of fallacies to avoid. Often it is used by force of habit, but sometimes it is used subtly, purposefully, and with great skill to great effect. Those with rhetorical training can use ad hominem without seeming to use it.
The skillful use of ad hominem does not require you to directly attack a person to discredit their argument. One can use indirect ad hominem to much greater effect and come out looking smart and quick and reasonable. Consider the following statements; one of them contains ad hominem the other does not.
"Ston's argument has some logical issues that I would like to address." "I would like to expose the stupidity/silliness/non-sense (host of other terms) of Ston's argument."
If I don't want to come right out and call Ston an idiot or a silly dolt and thus be accused of ad hominem, I will use the pejorative of his arguments and thus cast the same pejorative upon him. This is the most common skilled use of ad hominem and some people are very skilled at its use. Indirect ad hominem is almost always more effective than direct ad hominem.
Is it possible to avoid ad hominem all together? Yes, but it is very difficult and requires a great amount of self-discipline. I've gone back through some of my own posts and found quite a bit of ad hominem both direct and indirect in my own arguments with others. Some was intentional, some was because I was being lazy or emotional at the time.
Now, before I conclude, I want to address a related fallacy that is even more difficult to detect and equal to if not greater in force than ad hominem. This would be the fallacy of "enim homo" or "for the man." Like ad hominem it focusses on the person rather than the argument. In this case it is used to cover a failed argument on the basis of a positive characterization of the person. Below is a typical example of the most common enim homo.
"Cousin Billy Bob is always right; he knows what he is talking about."
P.S. There is a bit of not-so-sly ad hominem in the example above as well, just for your enjoyment.

Thank you for the insight Ston, I cleverly avoid the whole issue though by just doing and saying what i feel is the right thing, regardless of it passes the "logic" of someone else. I have to say it simplifies things not to have to come up with archaic words to defend myself or attack others with. |

DSTON Development Office Issues Uniform Policy Regarding War Declarations
The Corporation Disciples of Ston is a functionally pacifistic entity and seeks to maintain this functional pacifism to the greatest extent possible. Therefore, under the conditions of a war declaration against DSTON, all members currently active in rescue operations and active travel in the cluster shall leave the corporation and continue to operate under private contract to DSTON.
Currently, the Corporation House of Murder has declared war on DSTON. Ston Momaki and Manwe Todako have been instructed to resign all roles and prepare to leave the corporation for the duration of the war.
Any questions regarding this policy may be directed to the DSTON Development Office via evemail to Dr. Tahrmal Nalthkh Provost, DSTON Academic Learning Center CEO: Disciples of Ston |

While attempting these rescue operations is an applaudible act, i'm still not convinced that any of it is true. Ston himself claimed to have rescued one group of can-bound lives when he spent the entire day running around in a capsule. If he had not been caught lying one, i would perhaps believe that these slaves are truly free, but he has. That brings everything into question.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCIPLES OF STON
DSTON celebrates its first birthday today. A little over a year ago I began a personal journey involving the study of capsuleer pilot behavior. I was disturbed by the violence and greed in our cluster and so I set out to confront it on a pilot by pilot basis. beginning primarily in the system of Piekura, I flipped cans of only pilots who remained in the system. I then engaged them in conversation about their attachment to things and ISK and about their predilection for gratuitous violence. I would often return their goods or give them away. I jotted my reflections on this forum and enjoyed the reactions and interactions it spawned.
A while later I met a pilot who had become dis-enamored by the rather valueless approach that mission agents took to their work. He was an Intaki, working for the Minmatar at the time. He left Minmatar space and began to roam about. We met in Piekura and struck up a conversation. At the time, I was training no skills as a protest to the Capsuleer training and educational system which says you must train in order to accumulate more and become more effectively violent. Edaine was training skills and had those necessary to start a Corporation. "How would you like to turn your protest into a Corporation?" After some thought, I agreed on the basis that I would have say over its vision, direction, and rules. He agreed as long as he got to choose the name.
I figured that this was going to be a practical joke of sorts. "Space Pansies for Peace Corporation?" "Insufferable Bleeding Hearts Corporation?" There were number of names to choose. Edaine choose a name designed to bring as much hassle on me as he could possibly generate. Thus was born, Disciples of Ston.
We did not remain the roaming hippy beatnik organization that we began to be. This was primarily do to Manwe Todako joining our organization. Manwe brought a more rationalistic idealism to our focus. Over time, we began to observe the problem of slavery as one that could not be ignored by our organization. When asked to assume the care of a large number of rescued slaves, we could not refuse. Nor could we hide from the ongoing need to help the enslaved and abandoned.
Idealist tend to make poor administrators. We lean toward extremism at times. Long story short, after our own self-created IGS Debacle, we agreed to hand over the administration of DSTON to the more stable hands of our Development Office.
Short history concluded:
Happy Anniversary Disciples of Ston. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

I am pleased to report that our second group of Slaver Detainees have completed initial training in Korama and have been deployed for service at Dresi Center #3. As part of their rehabilitation, these former slave traders will serve the community and live in close proximity to those they once oppressed. We hope to eventually see these reformed individuals become productive members of free society. As with the previous group, this group will be working paid positions under the supervision of the Elders. I believe Elder Gladius will be in charge of this particular group. Saisieni DSTON,
First, a congratulatory statement on your corporate anniversary. That you have persisted in this work speaks well of the character and integrity of those within and affiliated with your work. The openness with which your corporation operates echoes these qualities and I am pleased to witness it.
Second, the cessation of threads created by DSTON members apart from communication of your open business workings is a step in the right direction. Many of these threads instigate hostilities (intentionally or not) which serves to hinder your work more than anything.
Finally, remember when calling out the sins of others that you must be beyond reproof in your dealings. As one capsuleer has indicated already, if it can be shown that you are not entirely honest in even one area or instance of your dealings, then it brings into question the entirety of your efforts.
Maintain your integrity, develop your character and do all things with honor.

DSTON has opened four new offices in Minmatar space.
As our Emancipation and Matriculation program has grown, we have found that we have fallen short in the task of Repatriation. The reasons for this are varied, but suffice it to say that the DSTON Development Office has needed to address this issue for some time.
Education and freedom of choice in education are hallmarks of a prosperous society. As an educator myself, I see that any endeavor to repatriate former slaves must involve offering varied opportunities for further education. We desire that those we repatriate become productive, contributing members of their new homes and communities.
To further this goal, we have reorganized our Corporate Divisions. First, we have closed the Clone Body Return Service. This division has seen no activity for some time. All 218 frozen clone bodies will be transferred to the Vocational Center for use in the Cadaver Dog training program. All former owners have been contacted and have not replied. Second, we have opened a Matriculation and Repatriation Services Division at all of our offices. This division will coordinate the receiving of all rescued or transferred former slaves, and also arrange for their eventual repatriation.
The four new offices are located in educational centers within the Republic representing four different areas of education. We are making available a traditional university, a law school, a tech school, and a military school. Those preparing for repatriation can chose the initial destination among these four.
The burden and risk of a repatriation emphasis will likely fall on Mr. Todako as he is our only member who can pilot the necessary covert vessel to bring these former slaves back home. We may enlist outside help in this endeavor but only with the utmost care to protect the safety and freedom of the former slaves we are here to help.
Repatriation reports are likely to be on the same thread as rescue reports. We anticipate that the work will begin as soon as Mr. Todako returns from tribal business. |

Class was interrupted moments ago with an FTL dispatch from the Republic University in Edmalbrurdus. 812 Matriculants from Aharalel just arrived safe and sound. We are proud to begin this repatriation emphasis with this group ready to begin studies and make their home and life in the Republic.
We await the day when the draconian laws governing transport of former slaves through republic space are revised so that massive numbers may be repatriated. Until then, I wish to thank our pilot who takes that risk. I also commend those repatriating into the Republic as the risk is your's as well. |

If I might humbly point out another possible security issue (you'll recall I was spot-on with the last one well in advance...)
It occurs to me that tasking "rehabilitated" slave traders with minding your populace of rescued slaves will result in one of two mathematically inescapable probabilities, given time:
1. Your rescued slaves rip their minders apart with fingernails and teeth, and riot after having been put under the patronage of their former taskmasters, or 2. Your "rehabilitated" slave traders turn out to be plain old slave traders, and rustle up your herd before you've finished typing your next elaborate insight into the cruelty of capsuleers.
Do take some precautions this time, old boy. I like what you do, but the way you do it leaves much to be desired, and tempts the criminal mind into exploiting you. You'd have more luck having Slaverhounds as referees at a Minmatar 100-metre-dash. |

After a late and long night FTL conference with Directors and Elders, a decision has been made to recall all participants in our rehabilitation program back to Korama and indefinitely suspend the program.
In spite of extensive security and screening measures we have come to the conclusion that our security measures are not sufficient for the risk. After reading Mr. Shogaatsu's comments, I contacted him and asked for opinion on the matter. As difficult as it was to hear, his words made sense. In particular, these words: "All it really takes is one man with a plan..." This is precisely what happened in the M-4 incident. It also reveals a deeper issue.
DSTON is run by well-meaning idealists. While there is nothing intrinsically wrong with such people, they tend to make poor decisions in practical terms. Idealism can weave a beautiful "I'll save the world" tapestry of hubris that can come apart with the pulling of one thread.
After long debate and even tears, the decision has been made. The detainees will return to Korama and work there under conditions of separation from the Matriculants. Are we abandoning our idealism and the belief that people can be reformed? That is what the debate and tears were about. While the ideal is still held, the risk is too great in its current form. At the end of our meeting, there was agreement, albeit sad.
Other changes are likely as a result of a closer look at these issues.
While using this medium for announcements, I prefer not to enter into the sort of interactions that commonly occur here. I do however think it is appropriate to publically thank Mr. Shogaatsu taking time to answer my message. Thank you. |

It certainly would seem so Shogaatsu.
As for your 'old age' unless you classify age as the amount of times your conciousness has moved between 'bodies' then I doubt you are really that old, or just more simply you are going soft on your little throne.
In any case, I do not agree with these... disciples of Ston, your programs while truly idealistic will never make a meaningful dent in the slavery system that the Empire perpetuates, and if you want to be pedantic, by my own Kingdom as well.

After a short leave from my academic duties and a great deal of travel, I have finished the re-assignment of programs that the Development office drafted. They are summarized below:
Primary detention facilities and administration: Korama Primary homeless shelter and administration: Ation VI Aliastra station Primary Vocational training facility and administration: Abrat III Pator Tech School Primary Academic Center and new HQ: Edmalbrurdus Republic University
In addition, the following four centers will serve as preliminary destinations for those repatriating to Republic space. They were chosen for their education access. Abrat III Pator Tech School Edmalbrurdus Republic University Trer VIII Republic Military School Sist VI Republic Justice Department Law School
We feel that these changes will fit each department better and address the security issues raised earlier. Our primary Matriculation Centers remain where they were in Amarr space due to the large number of Matriculants and the need to safely transport them to medical care and housing.
My office in the Development division has moved to Edmalbrurdus along with our academic services.

Here is an update on recent work:
The centers in Abrat and Edmalbrurdus both received their second groups of repatriates. We hope to keep the flow of Matari former slaves moving back into the Republic consistent.
I personally transported our homeless population and center staff from Korama to the new homeless shelter in Ation. The group from Korama only numbered 18. However, we have also received a large group of homeless from an anonymous pilot. This group numbers 1440. We are told that more may be arriving over time from the same source.
Our facility in Korama is now exclusively for detention and rehabilitation.
I will be returning to Edmalbrurdus and to my teaching duties today. The DSTON Development Office will track these changes, evaluate them and continue to make adjustments as is necessary. Dr. Tahrmal Nalthkh CEO, DSTON Provost, DSTON Academic Learning Center |

Two Corporate updates:
1. DSTON confirms the reception of 160,800 recently freed slaves from the Corporation NUVOS. These have taken residence in our Matriculation Center in Aharalel. 2. DSTON has opened and office in Khanid space to be used primarily as a Matriculation Center. The office location is in Khanid Prime.
The Khanid Kingdom is at the center of the scourge of slavery. We see an opportunity to have a center immediately available to help Khanid slaves find quick refuge and safety without dangerous travel outside of Khanid space. Khanid slavers do not discriminate who they enslave. We anticipate that we may find slaves from all nations and ethnicities who are in need of refuge.
We also want to provide a growing network of locations for the convenience of capsuleer pilots who have occasion to rescue slaves. When these pilots look for places to bring these rescued slaves, hopefully we will have a location nearby.

Transportation duty puts me in the mood for reflection, especially since I have the pod time in high sec space and can ponder a bit. It has been some time since I just wrote a thought or two in this space, so I am somewhat out of practice.
Cultures at War.
Certainly we see much of that around here. I have heard a couple old maxims stated recently in the context of these struggles. These maxims are usually stated as absolutes, yet they are opposites.
-Let Justice never stand above the Law. -Let the Law never stand above Justice.
Two truer statements were never spoken. Two more false statements were never spoken.
Each in its own way is responsible for the justification of some of the worst atrocities of mankind. For those who have constructed laws on the backs of the poor and the slave, upon the worker, upon the powerless, upon the minority, the first maxim is a whip in the hand of the powerful. Governments construct laws to thwart justice.
Likewise, the second maxim in the hand of the injured can be responsible for the travesty of vengeance. In the name of Justice, laws designed to protect the innocent and preserve order have been crushed all for the sake of a false, careless, anarchist form of Justice.
I prefer to see Law and Justice as principles in necessary tension. When Laws become unjust, let Justice cry out and act for their repeal, through civil disobedience and even rebellion if necessary.
When a people have suffered the pangs of injustice committed against them, let Law govern, slow, and buffer the Just anger of the same people, lest in their zeal for Justice for themselves, they commit injustice against others.
Let Justice and Law be the arms to two men in a contest of arm wrestling. Equal strength against equal strength, each winning when necessary, but mostly remaining centered with the perpetual back and forth that their tension creates. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

Unforgiveness is the hard stone on which the verbally skilled sharpen their words.
I have seen this again and again and I believe others too, are coming to the conclusion that argument is becoming a futile stalemate. No one gives up, no one admits they are wrong, no one yields the point. Age old grudges that have enveloped whole cultures and set them against one another, have become the god's that command us to our deaths. These gods need to be put to death so that forgiveness can have a chance to speak its piece.
But until then, the speech makers who hate the other culture will continue to craft the very best and latest argument thinking, "now, at last, I will convince all that I am right." But that never happens, does it? So we go on, fighting with words and with auto-cannons, pulse lasers, smart bombs, etc., killing and being killed.
How sure are you, really, that you are right and that your culture holds the most logical position or God's truth or the best option?
Certainly, yes, we need to follow what we believe to be the 'better angels of our nature.' But at what point will we become willing to hold some parts of our opinions just a little more loosely? Are we so afraid of occasionally being wrong? Is humility so distasteful that we never drink it?
More and more, I am coming to the point where I admire more the art of a person's argument than the point he or she is arguing. More and more I am inclined to say, "what a beautiful argument, but I don't believe a word you are saying."

Dearest Mr. Monmaki;
You describe one of the foundations of the pursuit of rationality - of how to determine the best course of action in a given situation. One of the most difficult things that rationality asks of us is to shed ourselves and follow where truth leads us, regardless of our beliefs. Unforgiveness and certainty are bedfellows, and both buy equal shares in our misfortune.
Unforgiveness can be defeated by humility. Certainty can be defeated by doubt and care. These are already things you know and practice daily. You are a bright star that makes it easier to navigate in the darkness. Please, continue to lead the way for us.

While you speak with wisdom and insight in this matter, I would like to add that the inability to forgive oneself is often just as deadly and harmful as the internal war projects itself outward. Sometimes it is not a matter of refusing to acknowledge or see that you have sinned, but the inability to forgive yourself for having done so. This is perhaps an even more difficult hurdle to overcome for many.
Humility and compassion are strong opponents to arrogance and hostility, certainty is a virtue until it blinds our eyes to inward reflection and conviction is a quality until it deafens us to reason. Let us collectively remember to seek truth and justice with humility and compassion, righteousness and purpose with certainty and conviction. |

As CEO of DSTON I have been behind in my reporting duties. I thought it was high time I give a little indication of some of our work. Ston has more than adequately taken care of logging rescue activities. While this is happening, we are also making headway in the repatriation of our Matriculation populations into the new locations in the Republic. Below is a summary of how many have been repatriated and where. The majority have chosen to focus on a traditional university education and have thus located appropriately.
7413 Edmalbrurdus Republic University (DSTON Academic Center and Corporate HQ) 3450 Abrat III Pator Tech (DSTON Vocational Training Center) 812 Sist VI Republic Justice Department Law School 1624 Trer VIII Republic Military School
Thank you Manwe for providing covert transport into Republic Space for those ready to repatriate. These efforts will continue on a steady pace and I will try to report our totals from time to time.
We have also been pleased with the reallocation of resources and refocus of our locations for specific purposes. Below is a quick report of our numbers for our other centers.
519 Detainees, Korama Detention Facility 670,833 resident matriculants, Aharalel 669,494 resident matriculants, Dresi I, Moon I 573,372 resident matriculants, Dresi I Moon 5 656,590 resident matriculants. Dresi II 730,947 resident matriculants, Fahruni X 4374 homeless persons, Ation VI (DSTON Homeless Shelter) (The Cottons and the Greenhands have requested that specific number for the Ealur Center remain unreported for now at the request of the population there.)
I have participated in some of the transportation duties recently. During one of those long trips (68 gate jumps round trip) I was encouraged to take in a few moments of a social experience called "The Summit." It was very interesting. I am used to the very controlled environment of first being a slave and part of the discipline of a crew, then on to university life and the careful structure of professor and student. "The Summit" was a social free-for-all. All different cultures and viewpoints all talking in rapid succession. It was chaotic, yet I enjoyed the few minutes of the experience. I doubt I could handle a steady diet of it though.
One last item: We have opened an office in the Khanid Kingdom. Slaves are found from many races and ethnicities in the Kingdom. We hope to assist in emancipation efforts there and to establish an eclectic matriculation center there. We will report when the work gets underway.
