GETTING MY NOTES TOGETHER
I am not quite as johnny on the spot as Mr. Todako, but I finally have my notes together from our time of silence. I will make a separate Wall of Shame entry on the other thread later when I get those notes together. Someone recently asked me if it is true that I still write on paper. Yes it is true.
Here are my reflections from the last two weeks:
Ston's Notes during Silence: 1/14 A reflection on Silas VitaliaGÇÖs actions regarding the 400,000.
Her biographical note is as follows... All souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine. ...All others can burn in the fire of my ascension, for I care not. Name: Silas Vitalia (See-laas Vih-tah-lee-ah) Appears: Late 30's Height: 6'-0"
How do we answer the question, "Why did she liberate 400,000 slaves?" How does it fit with Amarrian theological beliefs? No Amarrian who believes in the reclaiming would relinquish 400,000 souls to damnation just to shut the mouth's/pens of a group of pacifist abolitionists. We have found that there many devout, religious Amarrians who secretly abhor slavery. Is Ms. Vitalia one such individual? But to do so publicly as she did was a very bold move on her part. I would guess that she would deny this and probably respond with something of sharp cutting wit. That doesn't make me stop wondering.
1/15 Loki137 44 slaves, 5 slavers Mass Metroi 48 After this rescue, I was monitoring the com channel, The Summit. People were joking about shooting people and talking about how much fun it would be to go and shoot people together. What is wrong with this picture? This isn't violence for a cause. This isnGÇÖt "war for justice" or "war for defense" or "war for liberty." This is just violence because you feel like it. What has happened to humanity?
1/15 While performing a rescue today, I ran across certain chemicals in the same jet can as the former slaves. They were Blue pill, Frentix, and Mindflood. While the Mindflood is absolutely of no use to us at all, the Blue pill and Frentix are of interest to our research chemists back in Korama. These chemicals are basically illegal everywhere, so how to transport them to safety? After rescuing the people off of the jet can, I produced a fresh can and transferred the chemicals to it. I then tractored the can and towed it out of sensor range of the customs vessels that were nearby. From there I transferred them to my ship and took them to a secure location nearby. Manwe will transport them on to Center #3 when he is free to fly cloaked. Just what we are doing is trying to dilute a compound that combines Frentix and Blue pill so that we can treat extreme pain trauma cases during rescue ops. A great deal of research is needed to derive a safe compound. We now have a start with the base chemicals available.
1/16 Dr. Sakti reports that upon further examination of the Inflicter device, it turns out that it is far more an insidious torture instrument than originally thought. He has found that the programed nerve sensors are far more detailed in what they pinpoint. When held over a bone, the stimulator will pulse high intensity pain amplification signals. Bone pain, being some of the worst and most intense to experience, is the instrumentGÇÖs most devious use. We are still not sure of how widespread the use of this instrument is since this is our first encounter with it.
I think I am going to ask Edaine a favor even though he is no longer a part of DSTON. I going to ask if he would be willing to take a couple patrol shifts this week. Manwe is basically full time transporting right now and canGÇÖt share patrol duties. IGÇÖll send Edaine a message tonight. I think he is doing some mining not that far away.
1/17 I received the following notices from Edaine. Big thanks to Edaine for coming back to help us out. You are a real friend to the Disciples. I have been stuck out of pod and on planet for a bit of time. Edaine has filled in doing rescues in my absence.
Interesting rescue From: Edaine Numenor Sent: 2012.01.17 20:42 To: Ston Momaki,
Dear Ston, After you asked me to do a patrol or two for you, I found a death can. When in range, there was one lone person on board. After she was rescued, I was able to com with her. Apparently the pilot was going to keep her as his "personal" slave but changed his mind at the border. I told her about the 400,000 and about the DSTON Centers. She asked, "why did you bother rescuing just one?" I choked up a bit and it was hard to answer. Here is someone who's life has never really been valued. Now she will find a place where she is valued. Keep up the work, guys. Edaine.
Shortly afer this I received another notice that Edaine rescued another single person with a similar account. Finally, at the end of the day, I received this accounting from Edaine. Cpt Ryshox Sharv 3 hounds, 3 slavers, 8 slaves.
1/18 I went back on part patrol today. No action. I did, however, have conversation with Mr. Thessalonia regarding their shelter program. I assured him that we have made his offer available and that likely some will take him up on it. As usual, all sides of the Sansha debate are made available to our Matriculants. We are aware of those in our communities with utopian leanings and who at least have an interest in Nation. As of yet, no one has requested transfer, but that may change. Edaine tells me that he will be leaving the area and heading into the Molden Heath area later tomorrow. He has gone above and beyond the call of duty and has shown himself to be a true friend. Thanks Edaine and good luck on new ventures ahead.

1/19 I had a friendly debate with a good friend today over an issue near and dear to both our hearts. This was one circumstance where I missed the IGS as the issue is perfect for that venue. Both of us are abolitionist to the core but we differ greatly on the issue of abolitionists purchasing slaves to free them. I am against it; he is for it. I will try to represent his points as well as I can. He makes some valid points without convincing me of his position though. Him (the other guy): Why donGÇÖt you guys buy slaves to set them free if you have the money to do so? Ston (thatGÇÖs me): DSTON forbids the purchase of slaves even to set them free because of the fundamental belief that it is always wrong to purchase a human being with money. People are not commodities. There are also issues that are related that make it a bad idea overall. Him: Every life delivered from bondage is worth the price. Afterall, you guys basically bought 400000 slaves with two weeks of silence from the IGS. WhatGÇÖs the difference? Ston: That is not the same. To make a sacrifice to receive former slaves into your care is something we do every day. It is different than a purchase and it does not treat the person as a market item. What if we bought every slave in the Galaxy? Would that end slavery? I think not. Slavers raid remote settlements for new slaves every day. It would not dry the market. In fact, as the price went up, slavers would be all the more eager to get more new slaves. Him: Your argument is a double edged sword, Ston. Slavers are not gaining millions of new slaves by this means but relatively few. If every slave were bought and removed from the market, the price of slaves would be so high, that few could afford them. Those who could wouldnGÇÖt dream of dumping them into space at border crossings. The few remaining slaves would be so valuable, they certainly would not routinely be killed or abused for that matter. Ston: Interesting speculation, but the fact remains that a human being is not an object for sale. If the Disciples bought slaves, those slaves would be a legal purchase. That just isnGÇÖt right. Him: Fine, donGÇÖt buy slaves then, but remember, someone bought 400,000 slaves and then gave them to you. Do you have an issue with that? Ston: We have an issue with slavery period. Every slave we rescue has been bought and sold who knows how many times. That ends with us. Never again should their dignity be so assaulted. Him: I think on that we agree, but there are those who do not live in the philosophical ideal as you do. If people began to purchase slaves and gave them to you and to your Matriculation Centers, would you refuse them? Ston: You know the answer to that. Of course not. But it remains that we will not ourselves buy slaves and that is quite appreciated by those in our Centers. Him: I sure it is. (This was pretty much the end of the discussion. I am sure I didnGÇÖt get it all verbatim, but I think I got close to the way it went. He feels just as passionate as I do against slavery. We just differ on this point.)
1/20 Rescued a group of former slaves, Slavers and hounds today. I need to make a trip to Korama. We have 14 slave traders at Center #1 that need to be taken to our detention facilities at HQ Korama. The 50 rescued former slaves are settling in and being introduced to the Elders, shown their new homes, orientated to the program, etc. Edaine says weGÇÖre neighbors now up in Egbinger. Apparently his new Corp HQ is in the same station as our office there.
I practically bit my lip off trying keep my mouth shut. My mistake was monitoring The Summit. Some fresh faced new Amarrian recruit was on there. My way of coping was to invite him (tongue and cheek) to join DSTON. The deception that slavery is somehow righteous and pleasing to God is so engrained in some. It is at these times, that oneGÇÖs self-control is most challenged.
1/21 Rescued 1/22 Rescued a group this morning. I am reflecting again on the amazing stoicism of the Minmatar people in the face of death. They are brave, united, unselfish in their comfort of each other. They are teary or whiny. When rescued they are joyful, grateful, and undemanding. They are, noble. It makes me very proud to do what we are doing.
Others we rescue are not always so noble. That is another story.
1/23 Very odd rescue and an ensuing conversation came about today. A group of 20 freed slaves, a package of illegal drugs and several weapons were recovered from a jet can where we normally do the bulk of our rescues. I contacted the pilot. She claims that she was attacked and assumed that all was lost. Now she requests the return of the items we recovered. We will not return weapons as that would violate our pacifism. The drugs can be returned so long as we can do so at minimal risk of being caught by customs. The freed slaves are the big mystery. She claims that they requested transport but did not want anyone knowing where they were being brought. The Elders are trying to get the story from the passengers themselves. Hopefully we will know more today.
1/24 The 20 freed slaves that we rescued are not talking and have requested to be returned to the pilot for transport to their original location. This we will do for we have no reason to refuse their request. I have sent notice to the pilot to arrange a meeting to make the transfer. We will also return the illegal drugs that were in the jet can, but not the weapons.
1/25 Rescues continue on a daily basis. These will be reported on the IGS when we are back on next week. The transfer was made today of the freed slaves and drugs. We are wondering if Sansha has something to do with these people and their destination. Neither the pilot nor the people will tell us anything.

1/26 Another rescue of former slaves, slave traders and hounds was made today. I really need to make a trip to Korama to bring the slave traders to our facility there as well as the hounds to our training center there. Planet side duties have been pinching my time lately. I have heard strange rumors that a person I once knew may have shown up in our sector. The odds are against it, but I ran across a name of a pilot recently, that is strange for coincidence. I may have to look into it.
1/27 Quiet on the rescue front today
1/28 20 former Elite slaves were rescued in an early morning patrol.

This is an appropriate thread to introduce Numenor Benevolent Holdings (NUVOS). The Disciples of Ston will be the first beneficiary of the corporation. Their account currently has 1.7 Million ISK. 10% of my mission earnings will go to support the Disciples and their continued good work in our cluster. I want to encourage capsuleer pilots to make me aware of worthy organizations that focus on abolition and humanitarian work.
I am proud to continue to be associate with the Disciples and hopefully become associated with other worthy groups. |

DECEPTIVE IMPRESSIONS
Avatars can be so deceptive. In the rescue business, it is nearly impossible not to guess what will be in that jet can after looking at the avatar of the person to who it belongs. Today illustrated to me the constant deception of that practice. I came upon a can in a area of usual rescue activity. Looking up the pilot, I came to the conclusion that there were probably people on beard and maybe in need of serious help. WRONG, there only metal scraps. Now the avatar of the pilot looked like a really spooky Edaine Numenor. Sorry Edaine. This guy had white eyes and an empty ghost-like expression. Metal scraps...hmm.
I have also noted that the most innocent, beautiful, kind looking, gentle looking avatars have represented some of the most terrible things we have seen in the rescue business. One never really knows. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

I have asked Ston Momaki to develop a "Prisoner of War" policy for the Disciples of Ston. It is becoming more common for us to rescue or receive prisoners of war. We have no desire to keep these men and women in our facilities any longer than necessary to provide medical care and refuge. This is a touchy area as all side in the conflicts will think that their prisoners deserve to be returned whilst the other side's combatants are war criminals.
I have asked Ston to come up with a uniform policy and procedure to apply to all situations. Right now, we just so happen to have a crew that was rescued by their enemy and given to us. We laud the actions of this particular pilot for not killing her captives or even turning them in to authorities for torture and possible execution.
I would anticipate that part of the policy would involve minimal reporting and a high degree of secrecy to protect all from recriminations. SANKOFA |

EMOTION, HUMAN EMOTION
Today, a human person, a daughter of lost parents, asked the Disciples to look for her parents among the thousands that we now serve in our centers. The daughter describes her mother using her own eye color and her father using his favorite food. How do you not weep? How do you not cling to hope that you can answer, "we have found them and they are well?" I forgot to ask the person if they wanted their name shared, so that is why I haven't said who's parents we are looking for.
It really hit me, when I expanded her portrait to get a good look at her eyes so that we would know what to look for in her mother. It was those eyes, that said, "My childhood was taken away by slavers. I want it back." That is what puts a lump in my chest.
We will search hard. We will look into many eyes to see what we hope for. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

The trip with Verin and Amy to Eldulf the other day provoked a reflection on the continuing irony of slavery within the Sovereignties of New Eden. The Cargo monitoring computers that are standard aboard all capsuleer vessels have feature that alerts the pilot when crossing a border where his or her cargo become illegal in that sovereignty. We have begged Concord, the SCC and the individual sovereignties to provide a mechanism to free slaves and to remove or reprogram their transponder implants to register them as free citizens or at least emancipated slaves. Alas, they have refused.
Back to the cargo computer. I directed Amy and Verin's attention to the cargo monitoring screen and showed them where they were listed in the manifest. "Watch what happens when we cross out of Amarr space and into Republic space," I told them. When we crossed the border, their faces went gray. "There are skull and cross-bones next to our registers!" "How does that make you feel?" I asked them. "This is the republic, where we are supposed to be welcome here."
When will the Republic, the Federation, and the State see the cruel irony of this? This is shameful hypocrisy. Give us the means to legally emancipate rescued and/or purchased slaves! What does it say to these people we rescue when free governments stamp them with a skull and cross-bones? The situation is sickening when we can fly free and uncloaked in Amarr space but have to cloak as soon as we cross in to "free" Minmatar space. What a joke. How are these rescued former slaves ever going to trust the free governments if they won't recognize them as free? SANKOFA |

What feels more important now, more than ever? Individual rescues even of the smallest number. While our Centers are growing in numbers beyond what we ever thought, I sense that the individual in danger, in the face of death, is still the heart of Sankofa, the heart of DSTON. The single life is as sacred as thousands. As we find ourselves dealing with larger numbers, I find that the individual rescued gives even greater significance to the thousands. I didn't have time to do this today, but I did it anyway. I got out of the pod and visited with the people I rescued. One of the people rescued was a beautiful Vherokior woman named Iliullan. I told her, "I think you are beautiful." She smiled.
Edaine tells me that our numbers will be growing in about a week's time. We must prepare, but we must also continue to rescue the one or the two. SANKOFA |

IT DOESN'T RAIN IN SPACE
A friend of mine recently asked me, "When is the last time you drank a good cup of coffee in a comfortable chair in front of a big window looking at it raining outside?" Wow, that's quite a question, I told her. Why do you ask? "Ston, do you enjoy much anymore?" Hmm, that was a probing question. I got the point.
Then there was Ms Oniseki's thread on food and cooking. It reminded me that I really like to cook and eat. These things are often lost when too much time is spent in the egg. I need to get planet-side more often and sit by that window and watch the rain and drink good coffee. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

SEARCH FOR CAPSULEER'S PARENTS CONTINUES
A request by a capsuleer pilot to make a search for her parents among our Matriculant population continues. We face many challnges in this endeavor. Even if they are among the Center populations, we have no idea if they would have been kept together in slavery. Is one alive and not the other? Have both perished? Do they have the same names? Also, many of our residents have adopted a very private and quiet life. While some are very active and involved in community, others are not. Putting the information out publicly is no guarentee that the right people will receive the message.
How does one make a decision when to stop searching? When is hope a good motivator? When is false hope sustaining futility? I do not have the answers to these questions. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

PEACE BEGINS WITH PEACEABLE SOULS
Fellow lovers of freedom, let us not fight amongst each other for this only fuels those who would deny freedom to others. Only a man or a woman and the spirit inside that person knows the sincerity of their motives. Even those of similar values take issue with each other from time to time, but let us not malign the motives of others when we are not capable of making that judgement. Sometimes our passions get the best of us. Why not, instead, channel those passions toward the achievement of freedom in the ways we know how, to the best zeal of our convictions. Ston: for working his tail off going between patrol and working setting up the new Centers, I feel a little guilty as I have been up here working on my singing staff while you are hard at work mining the ship.
Edaine: What can I say? I appreciate your passion for what you believe is right and your willingness to pursue it. Thanks NUVOS and the new member of that corp Kentt Em'aseph. (Did I spell it right?) Ston says the first group of 150,000+ arrived in Fahruni today with more on the way in the next several days. P.s. Thanks Silas Vitalia for getting Edaine to think in bigger numbers. Thanks Pilot Tovil Hadras for liberating a small city's worth of lives. We all got inspired.
Ms. Adrelana: for letting me be a part of Amy's voluval and all the experiences leading up to it. This has been a remarkable time. I can't wait for the actual rite. I hope my marginal singing staff skills don't ruin it.
Verin: for taking good care of Amy and for answering all my questions. I am so glad you came along.

DELUSIONS OF POWER
One of the most effective ways to limit the power of individuals is to feed their delusions of it.
Enter Sansha Kuvakei.
Would Sansha give the capsuleer the actual power to open wormholes at will? No, I doubt that very much. however, he does fuel the delusion through the clever ruse of feeding the capsuleer loyalist a tasty carrot now and then. I have heard Nation loyalist capsuleers make many a claim of their ability to do such things that Sansha himself has done on occasion, but I have seen no evidence that it can actually be done, only talk.
The capsuleer among humans is perhaps the most susceptible to delusions of power making him or her also the most susceptible to manipulation by those who truly possess power. Indeed, while Sansha himself possesses technology to utilize potential wormholes and to manipulate their opening where conditions favor it, the universe still holds that phenomenon in check. How much less does the capsuleer have any reign on such phenomena other than what is allowed by nature and those who understand nature.
Sansha is just an example of the kind of manipulation common among capsuleers. Tell someone that they are a Demi-God; convince them to believe it; give them sufficient resources to feed the delusion. What do you have? A very pliable source to move and bend in ways they will not even begin to see.

The Disciples of Ston are pleased to introduce Dr. Tahrmal Nalthkh Provost and Professor of Behavioral Psychology at the DSTON Academic Learning Center in Korama. After the declaration of war against DSTON, Ston and myself were concerned about the ongoing mission of DSTON. Our pacifism forbids the use of violence in the accomplishment of our mission. We also saw the need to continue both rescue and transportation work unimpeded by war. We appointed a think tank at our Academic Learning Center and are pleased with the results. Professor Tahrmal, as he is affectionately known by his students, has been appointed the new CEO of DSTON.
Dr. Nalthkh was a former slave rescued in our early work. because of both his exceptional intellectual and mental capacities, he was hired to teach in our Academic Center. While there, he was found to fit the qualifications necessary to train to become a Capsuleer. We congratulate Dr. Nalthkh on his recent graduation and now appointment as CEO of DSTON.
Upon assuming the post, Dr. Nalthkh has instituted two major policies. Professor Tahrmal, in a speech given this morning to the academic assembly stated, "The slave rescue work of the Disciples of Ston, must proceed unencumbered by the ravages of war. For this reason, sweeping policy changes will immediately be made. All rescue work will now be subcontracted to those outside the corporation. Mr. Todako and Mr. Momaki may continue to work in these areas but not as members of the Disciples of Ston. Policy initiative number two is that all Intergalactic Summit communications of the corporation will occur on two threads only 'Disciples of Ston' and 'Former Slaves Enter Matriculation Program.' Corporation members are forbidden from posting on any other threads. Any changes of said policies will be enacted through the office of the CEO" (sic.)
I am pleased to relinquish the administrative roles of this corporation to the likes of one such as Professor Tahrmal.

Maybe the new management is worth something after all. |

The following a concise report of recent transfers followed by a new program announcement.
102 criminal slave traders were processed into our detention center in Korama from temporary facilities in Amarr space and from our Centers in Dresi and Aharalel, In addition 54 criminal militants were also processed. Detention Center inmate census: 245 Criminal Slave Traders, 79 Terrorists.
1574 rescued men, women, and children were transered from temp facilities to Dresi Center #2 yesterday and today.
Program Announcement:
The Development Office of the Disciples of Ston together with the Cottons, Greenhands, and Mr. Momaki have worked hard to plan and create a new program. Today we announce that 50 criminal slave traders will be entering a Restitution and Rehabilitation program to hasten their re-entry into society as productive citizens. This will begin with vocational training here in Korama and then assignment to one of our Matriculation Centers to serve those they once enslaved.
Those who choose to enroll in this program will train in areas from as simple as janitorial work to becoming a crew member aboard a rescue vessel. The focus will be on making restitution for their crimes of the past. After a period of service, the enrollees will then become hired and paid employees of DSTON, eventually being able to leave and go where they wish or stay if they wish.
The Development office will evaluate each individual who enrolls in the program as to readiness for each step. The final say will be given by the Greenhands and Cottons.

Are you really as dull as you seem? If you paid attention, you would note that Dr. Nalthkh clearly stated that communication refers to interaction, like what I am doing right now. Dr. Nalthkh made it clear that he would use this thread to "make announcements" regarding policy and program but would only communicated interactively through EVEmail. The first twenty slavers to enroll in our rehabilitation program have been evaluated, have undergone initial training and have been assigned to our Center in Ealur to begin a work program there. Their jobs will involve assisting the Matriculation community there and they will come under the direct supervision of the Cottons and Greenhands. Most will be involved in facility maintenance, janitorial work and some educational assistance work. They will be paid for their work. After a period of time, they be evaluated and perhaps receive additional training. We expect another group to be assigned to one of our Centers in Dresi within a few weeks.
Questions regarding this program may be directed to me via evemail.

I think what you meant to say is that the first 20 prisoners. I doubt that these slavers have voluntarily enrolled in your program. No doubt they were captured when you were rescuing abandonned slaves. Who has given you the authority to hold these individuals? To try them and assign them to what essentially is a penal colony??? Somehow I doubt that the slaves in the centres are going to treat the slavers in fair manner.

Surely you know what happens to Amarrian base-liners who "embarrass" the Empire by getting caught breaking the law. Most often they are summarily executed, or they are subjected to generational slavery. These slavers were rescued, as you say, while attempting to transport slaves for illegal sale outside of Amarrian space. Call them prisonesr if you like. If we were to return them to the Empire you could call them "dead" or "slave." The Disciples of Ston oppose the death penalty and we oppose slavery. Slavers are better treated with us than they would be if returned to the Amarr for "justice." Not one slaver we have rescued has requested to be returned to Amarr authorities. Hmm, I wonder why? Could it be that what they tell us of Amarrian "justice" is true; that execution and enslavement are the norm? The slavers we rescue see our operation first hand and as much as you would deny it, some want to make amends to those they once oppressed. That is what our rehabilitation program is about. SANKOFA |
