I did some very unscientific research comparing Sweden to the US once a long time ago. You have to keep in mind that there are big differences in Europe so this isn't true for every European country. I should also probably mention that I did this using google a lot.
As you say, the salaries are better in the US, you get about 30-40% more. But you have a much greater difference between low income and high income as well, so there are people making less than you'd make in Sweden and people making a lot more money.
One interesting thing I found when finding some articles about people moving US to Sweden and vice versa was that you really didn't have it better with that increased income. A US family with 30-40% more money actually had pretty much the same situation as a Swedish family with 30-40% less income. And someone who moved to Sweden had been worried about loosing so much money but found that you could live comfortably on less money.
You can probably debate if Sweden if the same, worse or better than the US. My own conclusion was that you were slightly better off in the US as long as you were single and healthy, but if you start a family and have to save for college and everything else, you're probably better off in Sweden.
But as I said, it's really debatable, if you are in a profession that makes the 30-40% more it could be ok to move, if you're in a category that makes less you really shouldn't move and if you're a doctor you really should move since they make 50-60% more.
The biggest surprise for me was that i thought that you had a financially better situation in the US and that turned out to not be true, or at least it didn't look like it was true.
And to get to the point, when it comes to the USD vs EUR, the only people it has gotten cheaper for would be the ones paying in USD but not living in the US. For anyone living in the US it hasn't become cheaper just because the USD is low, they haven't magically gotten huge raises in salary.
