Edited by: CobraBytez on 01/12/2007 00:11:19 This is a cross-post from the Goonfleet director forums. As many of you know, Goonfleet has a severe shortage of covops pilots. To counter this, they have learned to utilize their t1 frigates and math skills (hence their nickname "nerdswarm") in dishonorable ways. As you might have guessed, I'm waiting for my roles to expire. You ****ed me off for the last time, Nate Hammertown.
-----
TL;DR Version for you****gots: Using dark magic and employing evil sorcery I have created a set of bookmarks that will warp you wherever you want and kill slow moving bad guys. This system requires instas to three specific points above S3 in SU. There is a set of 22 bookmarks giving 5 alternate instas to these points along with origination and warpout bookmarks, it is your duty as a goonswarm pilot to claim this escrow and recopy/escrow it so that we can make our enemies weep and lament at our hax. This escrow should be labeled "GPS - SU, S3 - WTF BOOKMARKS (COPY AND RE-ESCROW!)"
and now the rest of the story
The Goon Positioning System (GPS) is much like GPS in real life. Your GPS unit in your car reads signals from three satellites and based on their delays it figures out how far away they are, and then based on these three distances your device tells you where on the planet you are. This involves a bit of math. It occured to me that we could do this in EVE, since distance is the one bit of info that always seem to know.
So after much headache and weeks of ******* with spreadsheets, bookmarks, and cans I put this together, implemented it, and tested it. And it works. It works SURPRISINGLY WELL. (It should be mentioned I had the help of Spazzle, Rycar, Fartbubbles, and Nobu Yori among others).
The first application of GPS will be a defense mechanism against slow moving, sniping battleships, and it has already been implemented and tested at S3 in SU.
I have put together a training MP3 (fraps is too large/tough to edit for me) to demonstrate both the use of and the effectiveness of GPS at S3. It can be found here. If you can't listen to the MP3 here is a basic rundown of how this works.
1) A hostile snipping battleship is spotted at S3, a gang is formed and warps to a SS near S3.
2) Three frigates, covops, shuttles, or any fast warping/aligning ships are chosen to scout. They are codenamed Whiskey, Tango and Foxtrot.
3) The WTF scouts warp to their own safespot, everyone involved aligns to S3.
4) The fleet commander commands the WTF group to warp to their respective bookmarks (whiskey warps to whiskey at 15km, tango to tango at 15km, etc).
5) Whiskey reports his distance to the hostile on teamspeak, upon hearing this tango reports his, foxtrot follows. Once a scout reports his distance he escapes with an insta warpout.
6) The FC inputs these distances into a spreadsheet that is only given to the FCs. He then runs a quick sort/filter on the spreadsheet and is given the closest warpin point to the hostile, and the bookmarks involved.
7) The FC warps the gang to an intermediary safe spot, and then warps the gang to the warpin point at the distance given by the spreadsheet.
8) The sniper is hopefully tackled and killed.
If you listen to that MP3 I demonstrate this whole process. I have edited it to make it play faster, but I did not edit from the time I command the frigate scouts to warp in to the time when the first point is called. The total duration from when the WTF scouts warp in to when we tackle the hostile is 1 minute 17 seconds. In this example the spreadsheet reported that we'd hit the hostile at 8.2 kilometers, and instead we hit him around 4km, he just happened to be moving closer to our warpin point, but he only moved 4km by the time we landed on him.
When tested with stationary targets (cans, ships that are stopped) this system gives a margin of error around 2km.

The grid at S3 is effective from the station between 50-250km, and the largest gaps in those distances should only be around 20km. The grid consists of 71 bookmarks (without the WTF instas) giving us 5586 points to warp to. In future deployments of GPS we will only need 50 bookmarks (I have removed redundancies while maintaining accuracy).
MATH NERDS: But doesn't three distances in 3d space allow for two possible points?. Yes, but in the same way that "real life" GPS assumes you are on earth, my refference points assume the sniping battleship is not off grid, eliminating one of the points.
SECURITY NERDS: Haven't you just given away all these secrets you created?. The goal of GPS is to either kill sniping battleships en masse or make the people flying them so scared that they wont use them against us (or a combination of both). Whether our enemies discover and duplicate this system or not will not effect that goal. Still I have taken some precautions, the full bookmark set and spreadsheet will only be given to trusted FCs and I have made multiple WTF instas making it harder to camp our scouts. As for the gang safe spots, there are multiple off grid points involved in the bookmark set and therefore trying to camp them all would be pointless, provided the gang isn't a slow moving cow.
Also there is an assumption that the complexity of this system, both in the math and the actual conceptualizaion, will deter our enemies from just picking up a trig book and foiling our plans.
WHAT I NEED FROM EVERYONE AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: =======================================
1) Locate an escrow at S3 in SU called "GPS - SU, S3 - WTF BOOKMARKS (COPY AND RE-ESCROW!)". Claim this free escrow, copy at least one (if not multiple) sets and re-escrow them. There are only 22 bookmarks, even 5 at a time it will only take a few minutes to copy these! Anyone who takes a set without re-escrowing them is a douchebag and I guarantee I will give you and your mother aids! You have now done your part! You may be called at a later date to be whiskey, tango, or foxtrot - CHOOSE YOUR PATH WISELY.
2) Obviously we want this system in place at spots other than S3 in SU. I am letting my brain settle for a week or so because I'm tired of bookmarks and spreadsheets and want to mine in an apoc and kill things with an arbitrator. Once that is done and out of the way then we must begin deploying the system at other locations, starting with the 6U gate. It took me and a few other goons a week to make the set at S3, I'm hoping that this thread will encourage some goons to want to help out with this a lot. With a gang of even 10 people we could drop cans at the bookmark points and create the grid pretty quickly, maybe even in an hour or two. For now I want people to wrap this concept around their head and maybe if we're lucky we can try it out on some real hostiles should any show up in SU.
3) I've requested that an invite only sub-forum be made for a team of people crazier than myself who want to work on silly ideas like haxoring eve with excel to make it do what we want. There are already future plans for GPS that will expand beyond just sniping battleships, and other people are already pursuing those paths without any help from me. We need a place for us to discuss these ideas securely and then figure out how to deploy them when they are ready. As it is I wasn't sure how to go about publicizing GPS and I sent a lot of PMs to mittani and other goons trying to figure everything out. A forum with threads and discussion could have helped this come sooner.
4) Someone lend me an apoc, I need to mine. And stop sucking all the crok in 98q at least a little bit. Kthx.

You COULD get on some MIT ish and do that.
Or, you could get a decent covops pilot and 25 seconds later. Bam, warp in.
Seems like it would be like 7 minutes faster than this method at worst.
Oh, and this is the nerdiest thing I have ever heard of. Ever.

How is this dishonorable.. this seems awesome to me, one of the greatest things about Eve is the variety of ways you can play it.
Huge amount of work though.

If that's real and true then it's probably the best thing done by Goons, hell anyone in the history of Eve. But tbh I suspect elaborate BS.

Not really that complicated. 3 ships warp in at 3 predetermined BMs, say their range, then according to a chart which was made after hours of plotting BMs all around the gate, determine which BM to warp to. Not really "trig book" stuff. More like algebra or even lower. I don't give kudos for brillance, I give them for thinking outside the box.
Just seems so clumsy and a waste of time, reinventing the wheel. Why not just train for a Cov Ops and do the same thing at every gate instead of having to plot 50ish BMs at every station, gate, POS, planet, etc in each system. I guess the description of Nerdswarm was right lol

So a sniper, knowing theres hostiles in system, sees 3 of said hostiles at different bookmarks around the gate, and actually stays there long enough for these positions to be reported, run through a spreadsheet/calculator, then wait for the hostile gang to warp to him?
Any pilot that stupid deserves to die.

It's not complicated at all really, it's just a pain to get all the bookmarks and put the spread sheet together

Actually this is not a waste of time...to those that believe the "just train covert ops" idea.. you loose a combat capable pilot in a covert ops frig just to get on target now with this idea if it is true or works you can maintain DPS and combat pilots while your 3 scouts can be your tackle/ support later on. This is perfect did something similair to this in provi not as complicated but it wasn't as accurate either. Great job if it's true...
