Just a quick query about this idiots who sit at the gates and target everybody who flies by, hoping for them to open fire in a mad panic and thus get dusted by the sentry guns/conord and thence to loot their stuff.
Is this griefing/allowed/ what?
It seems to be a growing phenomonen nowadays and I find it particularly distateful in that it is most common around the newbie systems, the intent clearly to take advantage of those inexperienced in the game and who will think they are being attacked.
Thoughts? Comments?

It has gotten so bad... I have turned off reverse targeting. Other than that, I just know the "tickers" I can open fire against.

Likewise.
Usually I'm in 0.0 though so I need to pay attention to who's targetting me. ------------- My salsa makes all the pretty girls want to dance and take off their underpants. I <3 ( . Y . ) |

I target those on our and my personal ****list, people doing otherwise I imagine find themselves on these ****lists very soon.
As long as people hold others accountable I see no problem with it. Alts sitting around smelling like teens should get stomped by Concord the second they targetlock anything, skillcap of 100k points perhaps?

Its certianly not "our" fault, we just call them "Noobs/griefers" in public and flyby waiving two fingers.
The point is that they are deliberately centered in and around noobie systems though... targetting those who may not know better.
I have no idea if targetting is covered in the tutorials nowadays, so your assumption that they "should know better" rests upon that foundation.
Is it?

So you learn the hard way. "may not know better"? Isn't there a rule that you shouldn't initiate combat in a safe zone? O yes, here it is: http://www.eve-online.com/faq/faq_05.asp. Lesson learnt, whether it be by a n00b or not. No reason to carebear about it. Just take it in your stride. |

Griefing? hell yea. Allowed? shouldn't be. GM's should check them out, hand them a warning, and a temp ban if they continue.

... Wouldn't it make more sense to simply add clear explanation how targetting and security system works to the starting tutorial, instead?

Of course you are right, but I think n00bs just don't take the time to read that sort of stuff. So they learn the hard way. Serves 'em right! |

Well, they could make the tutorial include so much stuff that it takes 7 days to complete it and the new players still wouldn't get it.
Com'on there are 1000's battleship pilots in this game that doesn't have a clue.
Picking on the new players is as lame as it gets.

As much as Basileus' manner grates, If it IS in the tutorial then thats reasonably fine imo...
Anybody actually KNOW if it is in the tutorial though? (Anything bout the rules of combat/targetting/aggression etc?)

Its certainly distasteful setting up noobs like that but generally it is allowed with the exception that doing so, having set up a character with the name "Guristas XYZ" or "Serpentis XYZ" etc is an offence.
Lets face it though, people are going to do anything they can in this game to make money - if you do fall for the trick and are in a frigate, you should be able to replace your ship and cargo fairly easily (and won't make the same mistake again) and if you are flying a cruiser or a battleship, you should know better.
Doesn't stop me hurling abuse at them in the local channel though

Yup, I don't think it's really griefing, but pretty lame.
Just open up on em in local chat
Let everyone know what they are up to, and throw some abuse their way
From a RP point of view I could see people using it as a test of nerve, to try and force a mistake from somebody. Doing it in starter systems is lame though
BTW it's about time we petioned to have carebear and newb,n00b, noob, noobie, newbie hit by the filter. These days they're just used as verbal abuse and so lets get em banned ============================================== "Trust no man who says to you that 'The ends justify the means' or who says that 'We will do whatever it takes...'. These men have no honour, and are fit only to be politicians."

Thats not such a good idea, if they send in a harassment petition you might end up as the one getting warned/banned.
I suggest you petition about this and see what the GMs does about it.

I have a question which I think is related to this topic:
Recently I approached a gate and two guys(one in a scorpion, the other in a typhoon) targeted me and some kind of light effect surrounded my ship(I guess I was webbed or warp scrambled, don't know). It was a 0.1 or 02. sec system in empire space and I thought webbing and/or scrambling is classified as an aggressiv act and thus the sentry guns should open fire on them, but nothing happend(I'm absolutley sure they were in sentry range). Is this a bug or do sentry guns only open fire when you actually shoot someone?
Sorry for possible spelling and grammatical mistakes, english is not my native language.

What's worse is that the tactic of naming a can "you", targetting it and another player, then warp-scrambling the can, thus creating a message "Player A has started trying to warp scramble "you"" appears.
I think the corp. ticker appears behind it, somewhat ruining the effect, but it's more likely to trick a n00by, don't you think?

Webbing/scrambling are aggressive acts; I suspect that what you saw happening to your ship, was a cargo scan. There have frequently been groups of campers locking target on, and cargo-scanning, every ship that comes past, presumably to see who's carrying enough loot to make it worthwhile killing them. Scanning cargo is not a hostile act.
The other explanation would be, it's a bug. But the cargo-scan explanation is much the more likely.

You're assuming that they don't take the time to read, which begs the question of is it in there or not? I don't believe it is.
In any event, preying on players new to the game is ALWAYS a bad idea, because a game that doesn't welcome new players, tends not to get enough of them to survive.

targetting shouldnt really make the red markers around the ship... would make it more clear he hasnt done an offense act towards you yet... or make targetting another an offensive act ? lol, it wouldn't suprise me, doh.

Yup. That's what I was going to say. Some people even use passive targeters, but the telltale scan sound tips you off.
The one change I think would help (maybe) would be to split the "initate hostile action" dialog into NPC and PC
Right now, the first time a character goes to shoot ANYTHING (even your tutorial drone), they get a pop-up warning them about the ramifiactions of negative action. That's fine and all, but everyone just clicks "ok" and "ignore" after the 2nd or 3rd turret, and this carries over to shooting PC's or PC drones. Possibly have a 2nd dialog that pops up saying "Shooting PCs or their gear WILL result in a security loss, and possible CONCORD action, are you sure you want to do this?" or some such.
-- TomB: End the speed-race. 1 propulsion mod allowed, make turrets affect ship attributes like +speed/+ab speed +agil for progressivly smaller/lighter turrets, -speed/-ab speed -agil for long-range. |

the people who target others for fun in noob systems are actually providing a valuable service - they are educating the new player about the wicked mechanics of the game. It's better to lose a couple noob ships and learn the system than to wait till you get cruiser or industrial full of stuff and find out about it THEN

Well, Molly, you are the definition of lame. Constantly whining about that CCP makes it harder for you to gief new players. Calling ME a carebear? LMAO.
I consider myself a VERY experienced player. I "only" do PvP. The difference is that what I call PvP is real combat between fleets or individuals. I have the balls to jump through a gate with 30 enemy battleships on the other side. Or warp in and attack 2 vs 4. What you call PvP is when you and 10 of your friends gank an industrial at a gate.
For the game to develop we need a safe enviroment for new players and a brutal enviroment for experienced players. You try to do the complete opposite. You try to gank and grief new players (which may make them quit) while you don't have what it takes to go out in the world where the good players are.
