i've got a Creative Zen and it's quite good.
i dislike the software that came with it, but since you can just drag & drop files onto it, it's not really an issue, and being able to play any old random DRM'd music is a big plus point over an ipod.
i preferred the ipod touchpad thingy to the Zen's little clicker, but the equivalent ipod cost about ú100 more at the time, and i don't like the ipod controls that much more.

Just bought a Zen 16GB to finally replace my aging 6gb NW-A1000, will let you know how good it is when it arrives and ive used it for a while. For now do my only recommendation is to stay as far as possible from all sony mp3 players, 2 years of that horrid software has left its scar.
To the poster above me do, have you been able to find a power lead to connect straight from player to plug? -

I have a Microsoft Zune 30. I really like it, although the new ones are much slimer and have bluetooth headhpones (bonus feature )
www.woot.com often has the old ones (only 30GB, slightly chunkier) for nice and cheap - I think they were as low as $80 last time.

Just get an iPod.
It is a market leader device and everybody else are trying to imitate it with varying results. Apple is always step or two ahead of the competition. ---

apple do 'ergonomics', and they do 'cool', but they're not really a step ahead of the competition in terms of actual product.
i'm no apple hater - i really like their stuff - but the ipod is a massively overhyped, nice looking, average sounding mp3 player with some annoying DRM restrictions.

Fanboi alert.
If apple is a step or two ahead of the competition, then please answer these questions: 1) Where is HE-AACv1 and HE-AACv2 support on the iPod? 2) Where is wma/ogg vorbis format support on the iPod? 3) Why is there DRM on the iPod? 4) Where is the exchangeable battery on the iPod? 5) Where are the exchangeable flash cards on the iPod?
And let's not start about their other projects.
Seriously, get a clue.

Of course they are a step ahead of the competition, but not in selling the "best mp3 player". All those points are very annoying for the (educated) user, but all lead (indirectly) to more profits for them. I would say they are ahead of the competition in having the best marketing, or maybe just being damn lucky!

agree, Apple is very good at spreading hype and they also have nice design.
That's not what the post implied, which I responded to though.

Advantages Apple have: Really nice design. The only way it could be any better is if they had a Sony style remote on the earphones but I use wind-up headphones anyway. Either you get this point or you don't. If you don't you're probably using something "better" but uglier with inferior ergonomics already.
Music shop actually worth using (note: I think they are now offering MP3 download for at least some of their music which makes it less of an advantage)
Disadvantages Apple have: Mugger friendly earphones DRM'd music / proprietary format (see above. This is changing) They don't like to repair their product so you have to get it done by a third party
The iPod wasn't anything new or different when it came out. There were already MP3 players out. The iPod just made the whole thing less clunky and computer-ish and more swish and consumer electronic-ish. I swear if Sony had pulled their head out of their arse about file formats and managed a decent music shop they could have done the same because they had the best interface and design bar none previously. Poor Sony
The things you educated users consider important are probably non-priorities for most punters. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

The current system used on ipods was invented by creative
Artist/Song/Recently Added etc.
I think the control system on the ipod is part of its sucess, easy to use i suppose!
Also they are very good at marketing to the masses.
Zen ftw though tbh! --------------------------------------------

Phillips GoGear 30g: they recently stopped producing them, but they're sturdy great looking have fm radio capability on top of MP3's, they don't have video, but honestly I've never felt the need for it.
Zune: just a great player, a couple of my friends have them, they have more storage than an Ipod cost less, and have cool features built in, and they're alot more rugged than an Ipod from what I've heard. they're kinda hampered by the fact that not as many people have them.
Creative Zen: Good sturdy players, don't know what else to say, feature wise they're kinda bland but as a music player they're right up with the others.
Ipod: had to list it, I suppose if you have the IQ of a brain-dead spider monkey, can't operate a computer to save your life, and don't mind chaining yourself to invasive proprietary software purveyed by denim clad fascists pretending to be hippies this might be the MP3 player for you! ... Why do I PvP? Because I love the feeling I get when I see the pretty lights and know that someone somewhere is screaming incoherently at their computer screen. |

The iPod has one major feature that nerds seem to scoff at and everybody else intuitively groks - it's actually really nice to use. I've tried out a lot of other players - Creative Zens, Sony MP3 Walkman and numerous others - and none of them are intuitively grokkable. The whole user experience of the iPod is well designed.
And features aren't everything. My parent's video recorder remote has 41 buttons with labels like "F.ADV", "A.DUB" and "SAT.CONT.". My dad can't program the VCR. He didn't need to read an instruction book to operate his iPod though.
The complexity of using an MP3 player lies in getting the files on and off. Most people can't get their head around file systems. Manually managing files on an MP3 player is a pain. Even when the user experience on the device doesn't suck, the experience of managing files on the device sucks.
And I'm not even an Apple fanboy. Don't get me started on how crap their laptop build quality is.

All a player really needs are 3 buttons and a volume control imo.
And so that I can press them in my pocket without having to take it out. Now, the iPod fails at that, whereas a lot of other players do not.
So usability THAT apple fanbois

Edited by: Digitalfox on 06/12/2007 19:07:37 Please for the love of all things holy dont get an ipod. I have grown to hate ipods and itunes so much that if I ever see Steve Jobs on the street I'm gonna grab the nearest yuppies Iphone/ipod/iwhateeverthelatespieceofcrap I can find and throw it at him.
I ditche my Ipod about a year ago and picked up a Creative Zen. My god I couldnt be happier. The Zen is the best
Pros: It plays almost any format, no need to convert just rip load and go You can use what ever media program you prefer to use, except itunes. It has a built in Microphone It has a built in FM radio Very nice easy to use user interface Its very durable, I've dropped mine a few times and it runs great In the off chance it locks up its easy to reset, unlike the Ipod. Its got great sound quality A high screen resolution High Picture quality It cost about $100 less then an Ipod Creative Labs has been doing computer audio since the dawn of time Its the best reviewd (well used to be, havent checked in a bit) MP3 player on the market
Cons: Screen visability in direct sunlite isnt all that good The screen is highly suseptable to scraches if you dont protect it.
Thats my points. Please for the love of everything dont get an ipod -------------------------------------------------------------------- Central Defiance says "check out our movie" DEFY |

I just wanted to plug the sansa. I found it very easy to use and *I* like the button & wheel set up that it has. Playing it full time takes me a day to wear out the battery (talking 20 hours non-stop playing).
Anyway thats just my two cents.

Going to necro this thread some...
It actually happened, that I will be buying a player as a present. After looking around a bit and doing some research, I'm pretty sure it will be a Creative Zen.
The only PITA is, that it will get fingerprints all over it rather fast.
