Just get another iPod. My iPod packed in a few years back (due to me being clumsy and not the iPod dying of its own accord); I bought a Creative Zen to replace it and it's just not as good. The iPod has far more features, and I miss all my old iTunes songs. So, after Christmas, I think I'll be buying one of the new iPod Mini's. Most people who hate the iPod only do so because it's so popular; but, in all honesty, it's the best MP3 player out there.
Hell is other people's ringtones. |

In what way does the ipod have more features...
im curious how you've worked that out.
Zens are top notch, had my 8gb V+ for a while now, and had a micrphoto before that, both fantastic. also means i dont have to deal with that insane mess that is itunes, ew.
I like the look of the new ZEN itself.
Why don't you have a gander on here. Linkage --------------------------------------------

I surprised myself when I came to the conclusion that my bother would be better off getting an ipod, he doesn't know all that much about computers, I can just about explain to him what DRM is and how to avoid it (thankfully). An ipod is just easier for someone like him, itunes is pretty easy to use.
For anyone with a bit more computer knowledge however, I would never recommend an ipod. I don't hate ipods because they are popular, I hate them because they have less features and battery life, but cost more than the alternatives.
To the OP: I'm not sure which I would recommend, but I have heard that Archos, Iriver and Creative are among the better brands, when looking at factors such as battery life, usability and (the most important one) lack of DRM "features", ie you can just plug it in and drag music on and off, with no restrictions.

I've heard that zens can be... touchy with what software they work with. I'd rally rather not have to use WMP with it I hate WMP almost as much as Real play... I mean Itunes. I'd like a real sig feel free to share ideas on one. |

Ive had my zen micro for about 2.5 year now.... never had any probs with it. Used to use WMP for transfer, since moved onto winamp which imo is the best music player ive used on pc.

Why do you need an mp3 player, a mobile phone, a PDA, etc, when you can have everything in one?
Just get a decent phone, no I am not talking iPhone here, not until there is a proper SDK with apps.
I like mine.

Well the OP did ask about 15GB+ players, show me a phone with that much storage!
Actually my 40GB sony vaio (nice player, absolutely horrible software, which you have to use, do not buy!) is now full up so I wouldn't mind getting an 80GB player, anyone know if there are any out there?! It seems hard drive mp3 players have fallen out of fashion lately, a quick search brought up one 30GB model, the rest were flash memory ones at 8Gb or less...

15gb is really the bare minimum for me since that is just my "popular" music. I also have another 10 or so gb of classical music. Not to mention a ton of videos I'd like to carry around. I'd like a real sig feel free to share ideas on one. |

Edited by: Ryysa on 02/12/2007 22:04:50 Phone holds 8Gb thanks to exchangeable cards.
Also, you never need 40gb of music storage in your player, unless you store all your music in 320kbit mp3 or w/e.
I have 200 gigs of music on my computer, doesn't mean I must have EVERY track with me at any time. And if I need that one track, I can easily download it to my phone from my PC via 3G.
Just fyi, I seriously suggest you shake hands with Mr. AAC+...

Wait, you are using MP3 in your portable player? Well, I guess you are, since your player is from stoneage.
Just fyi, 64kbit AAC+ is of higher quality in a listening blind test for me than 220 kbit VBR mp3 (which is better quality than a 256 CBR MP3), on multiple occasions.
Don't blame bitrates for the fact, that you are using an ancient encoding technology.
Also, may I ask what kind of headphones you are using? It's not like you will feel a difference between 192kbit VBR properly encoded MP3 and 320kbit MP3 on generic earbuds.
But yeah, if you need close to full transparency, I personally can't make out the difference between 320kbit MP3 and 96kbit AAC+. That with DJ Phones, and having mixed music close to three years now.
No offence, but I doubt you are /so/ special, that you can hear the difference.
Anyhow, before you start throwing around bitrates, do familiarize yourself what bitrate means, and in which context it applies. Saying that 128kbit HE-AAC has crap quality will make you a laughing stock, as it's better than 320kbit MP3.
Quote: Edit: also I like carrying around 2 separate electronic devices if I don't keep one in each pocket I feel unbalanced. (maybe it's a bit of ocd)
I guess both of your reproductive organs need an equal dosage of radiation
Also, "all of your music"... Well, you got a tiny collection compared to mine then, and I never feel the urge to have all the stuff around, just what I feel like at the moment.
For me, one device for all, means less other devices to lose, and less room to use. But w/e.

Edited by: Ryysa on 03/12/2007 00:40:16 Basically what I am trying to say is, get something that supports newer audio formats than LC-AAC and MP3 (eAAC and HE-AAC aka AAC+ in particular).
Since that will effectively double/triple your storage.

Another reason I'd rather not get a phone/music player combo is that I'd hate to not be able to listen to music because I might need to make a phone call later or vice versa. Now, if you can point me at a dedicated music player that supports those file types I'd be quite grateful I'd like a real sig feel free to share ideas on one. |

Seriously, I don't know about your phone, but my phone can playback music nonstop + get some call time in for over 24 hours straight (need to try to do a kill battery test), which surely should be enough to find a power outlet. I abused it once almost nonstop for 16 hours with web browsing, video watching, GPS and listening to music the entire time (when I just got it) and battery didn't die. Was about 1/4 left still.
Quote: Now, if you can point me at a dedicated music player that supports those file types I'd be quite grateful
I'd be the wrong person to ask about that, sorry. Players that support those formats should list them in the specs though.

I forgot to mention my phone carrier is Alltell they offer no great phones unless it has been out for 1 year already, no fancy interweb service or anything. They just have the best rates and signal availability around here. My phone can go a few days just sitting in my pocket being used fairly often to text. It only has 4 hours of talk time though/ I'd like a real sig feel free to share ideas on one. |

Though you're overall right, this statement is technically false; AAC encoders do not use HE features (SBR) above about 90-110 kbps, because they result in a net loss of sound quality at a high enough bitrate. 320kbit MP3 is technically better than 128kbit AAC, but I'd be shocked if anyone can actually tell the difference. They did a few listening tests a while back and found that:
<48kbps: HE-AACv2 creams everything. 48-72kbps: HE-AACv1 creams everything. 72-96kbps: HE-AAC gets close to LC-AAC and Vorbis. 96-128kbps: Vorbis wins. 128-192kbps: Basically a massive tie among everything but MP3 because nobody can tell the difference. 192kbps+: It all sounds the same.
(Note this is proper VBR/ABR encoding, not CBR, etc)
Vorbis is basically the best overall, but it doesn't have SBR or PS like HE-AAC does because they're patented, and Vorbis' goal is to not use patented technology. As a result it gets beaten easily at low bitrates. And honestly, I cannot tell the difference between 40kbps HE-AACv2 and 320kbit MP3, probably because I don't have ultra-badass headphones of awesomeness.

I still have a Zen! Touch from many years back. It works well and the battery lasts for seemingly forever, but there's much newer (and better) players out now.
I wouldn't buy an Ipod for reasons already stated here, they're really the worst choice possible if you want an MP3 player that is priced well, isn't supported by horrible software and is feature-rich. I'm sure there's some issues with the way Itunes uses DRM too, but I don't own an Ipod myself so can't really shed much light here. -----

HAHA!!!! I find that to be the funniest comment I have ever heard. If you wanna pay $50-100 more for a proprietary piece of hardware that can only play stuff that was encrypted through itunes, only supports the playing of music and video (and in the case of the new touch, web browsing) unless you buy "Add-ons", go right ahead. I will keep my cheaper, more flexible, longer battery life, multi media type, and a slew of built in features that are considered "add-ons" to apple. I like iRiver, Zen, mobiblue, to name a few.

Zune best player i have ever used, big seen for movies and such, radio so i can listen to the bob and tom show in class, ability t share music and pics with your friends wirelessly, 30 gigs (new ones have 80 i think) kinda easy to break the screen but if your not too rough with it you will be fine, no games yet, i think there gona be releasing them next year, the software it uses is awesome, say if they were to add something like a clock feature to the new versions you would be able to update the firmware for yours and then you would have it too. so in conclusion YOU BY NOOOW ---------------------------

all in al i think its cool, i do however have to say i dont like the new software/firmware they came out with recently, as said, im using the first version of softare and firmware and refuse to update
