When I installed the graphics upgrade, the first thing the patcher did was "Delete file: \boot.ini". This image shows specifically what I mean.

I got the missing boot.ini startup error after mucking about with the test server build a couple days ago. Put 2 and 2 together and figured the test patch must've done something. So this time around, I kept an explorer window open watching the C:\ root, while running the content upgrade patch, and voila! C:\boot.ini went bye-bye before my very eyes.

Perhaps CCP's QA team is in need of a little time out.

Hum, while, not exactly afraid of it, I really do wodner how exactly did this "little" Messup happen?
I can jsut see a bunch of the non-techie people with only one comptuer wodnering why their comptuer won't start after the eve patch (althought not exactly is it often that people, certanly people not exactly knowing much about computers, won't connect game patch to sudden comptuer death) And, the ammount of poeple who are just wondering what to do...

 :/
 How did it happen? O.o

I am so screwed...dont know where i placed my windows cd .... been a few years... so i'm stuck at the <windows root>\system32\hal.dll

Wat can i do now? i need help...i'm just really ****ed since i need my lappy for work as well. how the heck can ccp lapsed n erase windows boot.ini anyways..i mean WTF!!!!! arhhhh

I just had to walk my friend through the MS KB article over the phone, because his computer that CCP hosed was his only computer.

CCP needs to address ppl who are locked out of their computer due (a) CCP hosing a windows system file, combined with (b) CCP's advice tht ppl upgrade video drivers, which FORCES a reboot.

The boot.ini file should in most cases be possible to rescued by doing a system restore.
From Start menu - accessories. for the hal.dll (Hardware abstraction layer dynamic link library I think it stands for..) is a different matter, the most common action then is the total windows reinstall, there is however a way to rescue it via the recovery console but that is usualy not reachable via OEM system manufactureres.

I used to have that Hal.dll corrupt thing a few times like clock work, but later found that out was a sign of a dying harddrive.

 Does Vista even HAVE a boot.ini? :P
When i tried to check out the command to create a new boot.ini file in the commandconsole it said that it is "recommended" for us vista users to use BCDEDIT instead, i dunno what they mean by that but :P

And i dont have any Boot.ini, but this shouldnt be a problem for vista users right, vista asks me if i try to create a new folder if i really want to do it, if a installer tries to remove an important file (if it is?) as boot.ini without asking, then microsoft is just as bad as CCP ;PPPP

I patched my EVE from Classic to Premium using the ingame update function, ive turned off my computer and restared after i played the new version for a bit. Ive started my computer back up and no problems have popped up as such. Am i effectively clear? Or am i still in "unsure" territory.

Ps: My copy of Windows is less than "normal"

If you don't have a windows disk google Windows boot disk. Find your OS version -> make a disk -> use it to boot. Once your up explore the boot disk contents and copy it's boot.ini file -> Paste copied file to C:/ Play eve

IF your windows IS NOT at the default install of C:/Windows you'll have to edit that file with the right path. If you know enuff about computers to not use the default Winblows install path then you should know enuff to fix the boot.ini file.

While its a wonder how this is happening at all *shame CPP* its not the end of the world, just a small step in the right direction.

Why haven't any devs responded to these posts? If anything a few words of encouragement would be nice. Something along the lines of "Don't worry everything will be fine. We are in the process of a fix and we are (insert amount of time) away from completing the fix and helping everyone get their f***** up PCs back online."

All things considered, CCP is probably trying to CYA by checking their patch source to make sure they really can say, "it'll be okay".

Once they source the issue, I'm absolutely sure they'll have this problem knocked down fast.

System Restore fixed the problem for me. BOOT.INI was missing from msconfig before I restored, and afterwards my system rebooted fine and BOOT.INI was back. Good thing I browsed the forum before I restarted.

In most cases with a bone simple windows xp install a simple message indicating that boot.ini is invalid will be displayed and xp will continue to boot. Those with not so simple partition setups will have issues. Everyone should pay close attention to their startup. If you see the message follow the instructions that have been provided by several members and fix your boot.ini file. For those with more non-standard setups this will be difficult, but not impossible. There are lots of smart people here in the forums and at CCP who can answer your questions and help out.

Sticking to classic eve for now I think, EVE is on c: but might install this one to another drive, just backed up all the system files in the root of c: and archived to another drive :)

Or might just wait for the devs to not rush things and release a fix before installing :)

 Wow... just... wow.
The default user method to upgrade to the new primary graphics system on the most common OS bricks your computer, unless you have a restore CD. You can't tell your computer is screwed up until you locate a hidden file - your first warning if you're unaware is being unable to boot.

You can't really fsck up bigger than that without formatting C.

I wouldn't discount a few process servers or lawyers spawning at Reykjavfc Airport, terms of service be damned.
