Find a mate with another windows machine. Take your harddrive out, piggy back your harddrive as a slave on your mates machine, and replace the ini file.
There you have it, one repaired drive.
I'll not go into the way XP tags drives. But doing that can sometimes end up with XP altering the MBR and trying to force things through that arent nice.

Then as a software guy, you should also know there is a difference between testing something in a controlled lab and then putting it out to the real world where people run god knows what other software on the machine.
Also, not 100% of people were affected by this. I wasn't. But I also have the expertise to fix it in about 5-10 minutes too.
