Originally by: Magnus Inmatari Upgrading to premium definitely removed my boot.ini file, but my computer started up fine this morning. I have created a new file and copy/pasted the sample boot.ini into it.
My question is this: why would my computer have started normally? I am grateful for small blessings, but it just has me worried that, with my new boot.ini in place, my computer will not start the next time.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
Only people who installed premium before 4Am and are running XP are effected. -----------------------------------------------

Why on earth does the eve-online hdr graphics pack installer tamper with a component of windows' bootloader?
Have the wonderful people of CCP been hacked again?
Personally i'd like GM/DEV confirmation of why this happened, but if they decide to say "No Comment" it'll be accepted as the answer.
Pfft you worry too much...
Eve uses a text file named boot.ini as well completly unrelated to the boot.ini of WinXp, their installer basicly deleted it from your root instead from the Eve root. This would not have been an issue werent it for the fact that in that location there exists a boot.ini which tells your puter where your windows installation is located on your disk(s). -----------------------------------------------

Same exact thing happened to me.. Same exact!
and here... I'll have to reformat if the slave over doesn't work
FFS DONOT REINSTALL: the hal.dll message basicly means missing boot.ini, use a xp bootdisk and fix the damn thing. -----------------------------------------------

Drop the boot.ini in your root (c:\) and you are set (if it's allready there then dont do anything since you dont have the issue). -----------------------------------------------

PC wont boot from my DVD drive, so i am struggling to work out how i am gonna get my pc to run. Im just glad i have my sisters spare computer to vent my utter frustration.
P.S If anyone has any idea how to boot from DVD drive i would apprciate it - i tried the f6 option mentioned above but it does absolutly nothing.
P.P.S i would use my dusty old vista upgrade disc but....wont work either...
1. The hal message is windows way of saying boot.ini missing. 2. Go into your bios and change the boot order of your devices so that your dvd drive is on top or better yet if you have a floppydisk download a windows xp bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com. 3. If you are going to boot of your DVD then DONOT NOT NOT NOT reinstall, go to recovery console and fix the boot.ini from the command prompt. -----------------------------------------------

Originally by: REALITY X Well, I am semi-computer illiterate, and I have no idea what to do now. I'm just lucky I didn't turn my computer off before going to bed like I usually do.
I downloaded the "winxpboot.ini" file to C:\, renamed it to "boot.ini", went into msconfig and clicked on the "boot.ini" tab and then selected "Check all boot paths". At this point, I keep getting a "System Configuration Utility" error message which closes everything before the next steps can be done.
Is it okay that I just have this renamed file in C:\? Will I be able to restart my PC with no problems?
No you are not fine. Most likely the partition cant be found, change partition(1) to partition(2) and try again if that doesnt work try 3, rinse repeat untill msconfig runs without an error and validates your boot entries.
I appreciate your attempt to help, but I'm not so sure what part of "semi-computer illiterate" you did not understand.
1. Start -> run -> notepad <enter> 2. File -> open -> look in c:\ 3. Files of type -> select all 4. select boot.ini -> open 5. You should see something like:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
6. Change the bolded part as said before until msconfig doesnt give errors anymore (remember to safe the file inbetween).
edit: 7. send me iskies I'm poor

Originally by: Zycorax II Should I reinstall EVE after fixing the boot.ini, or can I just go on and play as usual?
Go play as usual. WinXP has a file named boot.ini and so has Eve, bug in the Eve patch deleted the one in the root (which is where your windows one resides if you have eve installed on your system partition), Eve wrote itself a new boot.ini in the eve directory as part of the installation. So after you fixed your XP EVE is fine as well as is the rest of your data. -----------------------------------------------

Originally by: Frygok I'm devastated... have Windows XP pro, and an account key allowing us to have the same XP on several comps. This means I don't have my XP cd, which again means that I now have a computer that cannot start up windows requiring the hal.dll file.
CCP's advice is useless, as I simply do not have the cd for it. Is there any way I can reboot windows in a secure way without the boot.ini and then restore? Or is my 15 pages of uni project I've worked on during the last couple of days lost?
How you managed to **** this up so hard I cannot comprehend, but I am in shock...
I can appreciate that you upset that your computer is down but I don't see how the data is lost unless you reformat the harddrive. In order to reinstall if you had formatted it would require the use of a windows CD and if you have a copy of that then you can fix the issue without reformatting.
I had to fix the same issue this morning for a presentation I had to give. I used the method laid out by CCP and Microsoft and all was well again. The only note for the non US people is that the recovery console uses the US keyboard layout. Therefore you might want to change the keyboard type as the recovery setup starts to the layout appropriate to your laptops point of origin, or the password my not get entered as you typed.
Use a windows XP bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com instead of the windows xp cd to fix it. -----------------------------------------------

Originally by: Lexus Fatel OK so I installed the patch before 4:00 GMT today. I followed the instructions to see if I had a boot.ini file and when I go to system to check for the file, and I press settings a window comes up saying this: "The C:\boot.ini file can not be opened. Operating system and time out settings cannot be changed."
But the weird thing is that I have already turned off my computer about 4 times since I patched and I still booted as I would normally do. So do I have the problem or not?
I tried looking for the file in C:\ and C:\windows but there is nothing there, and yes I did do the show hidden files.
Any Ideas? I have XP home SP2.
You are fine if you can bootup your WinXP, the whole boot.ini drama would prevent you from loading up WinXP, so gratz and go play happily! -----------------------------------------------

Originally by: Snasty This is a disgrace, nothing less.
My XP CD is over 70 miles away, as bad luck has it, and I shouldnt need the bloody thing anyway if even the lamest of testing had taken place...
AND THEN to make matters worse they give me instructions to replace boot.ini, which I did and hey-nonny-nonny hal.dll is wanted also. Now having booted I have lost the opportunity I had to deal with that issue there and then.
To say I'm unhappy is an understatement of epic proportions.
Use a WinXp bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com instead it will allow you to get into WinXP and fix it from within XP itself. -----------------------------------------------

I'm running XP pro 64bit if that will help anyone
People are only affected if: 1. they patched up to premium before 4 AM 2. they run a flavor of Windows XP 3. Have EvE installed on the same partition (drive) as Windows
You fail #3 by the sound of it hence you are not affected. -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Fuglin Bonnet on 06/12/2007 05:47:01 I made a small bat to generate a boot.ini for those who had it deleted. Warning this is only for windows XP. You can find the boot maker here.
The code is quotes below.
Quote: @echo off echo This brief batch file re-creates the boot.ini ccp so nicely deleted for you, press ctrl + c at the same time to exit pause cd c:\ IF NOT EXIST .\boot.ini GOTO MKBOOT echo boot.ini already exsists GOTO Q
:MKBOOT echo [boot loader] >> boot.ini echo timeout=30 >> boot.ini echo default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS >> boot.ini echo [operating systems] >> boot.ini echo multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect >> boot.ini attrib +h .\boot.ini echo boot.ini generated on c:\ drive GOTO Q

So if I download new premium EVE client and install it on D: drive should I have any problems with rebooting my PC...
No you will be fine, it only affected: 1. upgrades of old eve client then upgrade to premium content 2. if you had eve on the same drive as your windows 3. WinXP and above conditions

Originally by: FatBloke So I got the patch done....... briefly gawped at the lovely graphics, then turned off my PC and went to bed.
Now I've turned my PC on.... and its working... logged on eve and been directed to this thread and I'm confused as hell tbh ' I've enabled all the 'show hidden / show system' type settings and there does not appear to be a boot.ini file
So, should my PC be functioning at all? do I need to make a new boot.ini file? Do those funny settings in the boot.ini need tweaking cos I've got multiple HDDs and partitions?
Is my PC gonna die horribly if I turn it off?
I've ploughed through a handful of the early pages and frankly I'm confused as hell and very very nervous
If you had been affected you would not been able to start up your WinXp installation. So go on and forget about it... :) -----------------------------------------------

What does the boot.ini file do?
Why do i need it?
and since i've not got a boot.ini file on this computer anymore and it still loads up is it a huge problem for me?
The boot.ini points the windows bootloader to the location of windows, if your windows loads then you dont have an issue. ----------------------------------------------- iskies + my wallet = <3

That message means missing boot.ini and yes you can get around it by using a windows xp bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com. Since you have a dell you will need to edit the partition(1) part in the boot.ini (2 entries) to partition(2). ----------------------------------------------- iskies + my wallet = <3
