Yeah, so long as the restore point is before the patch :)
its from two days ago. thank god for SOMETHING causing a restore point.
i had a customized boot.ini i made through nLite a year ago and i dont have access to the custom windows install disk right now... i would have been boned.
edit: this needs to be in the first post as an easy fix. most people with a big box brand computer will have customized boot.ini files and be screwed. they need to do this. also, its more of a non-techy friendly solution.

Aye...
How the hell did this happen anyway CCP?
lazy coding. they didnt use the full path when they deleted eve's boot.ini, instead just deleted boot.ini from the current directory, which defaulted to the root, instead of the eve folder somehow.
if they just had it delete c:\games\eve\boot.ini or whatever it wouldnt have happened.
also if ccp had any competent QA testers they would have caught this bug days ago. SHAME ON THE CCP QA DEPARTMENT!

Do check using start>run>msconfig after system-restoring though, doesn't hurt to be sure.
system restore has a copy of boot.ini backed up. that should be fine. also posting in a quote pyramid. and lastly CCP had better cover any and all repair costs to peoples computers who are not techies and dont have a means to fix it themselves. i fully expect checks to be issued to those who incur real life money costs from this and something in game to compensate wouldnt hurt either.
edit: oops double post, sorry. should have combined them.

On EVE, if you go to the Esc menu and then on the "About Eve" tab, right at the bottom you'll see this..
"THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED BY THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS AND CONTRIBUTORS ôAS ISö AND ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE DISCLAIMED. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE FOUNDATION OR CONTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES; LOSS OF USE, DATA, OR PROFITS; OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION) HOWEVER CAUSED AND ON ANY THEORY OF LIABILITY, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, STRICT LIABILITY, OR TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE OR OTHERWISE) ARISING IN ANY WAY OUT OF THE USE OF THIS SOFTWARE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE."
To those who don't quite understand it, read it as this:
"USE THIS SOFTWARE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!".
Just because you bought something doesn't mean it'll always be perfect. Ok so it was a pretty major thing thats happened, but there has been support forthcoming (both from devs and the public alike) and as most people should know there are normally some issues that come with a standard update, let alone a complete rebuild like this one is.
A big pat on the back to all those out there who have helped the others who would otherwise be stuck up a creek without a paddle - me included!
who cares what the EULA says, its what is RIGHT. a company like this that messes up like this should step up and fix their mistake. in this case helping people pay for the fixes. not only is it good business but its good rep. and after something like this how many thousands of people will no longer trust CCP at all unless they come out and say the effed up and do everything they can to fix it and make it right.
edit: i can fix this for my own system just fine, so i gain nothing from CCP paying for peoples systems to be fixed. other less tech savvy people do.

Shame on you Spork... you know what they'd get if it deleted "C:\games\Eve\boot.ini"? A bunch of boot.ini files that don't get removed... because you are forgetting 1 major part. NOT EVERYONE INSTALLS TO THE SAME LOCATION! <CORPMATE SLAPS SPORK> Bad Spork, Bad.
they could pull the path that the patch is installing to and use that, instead of an open ended /boot.ini...
of even better USE A DIFFERENT BLOOODY FILENAME!!
edit: watch out with the talking bad about me, i might blow up your apoc again and laugh! HA!

Originally by: N1fty I love how this mostly affects people who don't know much about computers; most savvy people will have put EVE on a different partition or drive to their OS.
I would suggest to anyone who thinks they don't know anything about computers that they read very carefully the instructions provided by the devs. Its very step-by-step and short of using hand-puppets its easy to understand.
And I dont see how CCP's QA department missed this, I think the whole team needs to have the words 'EPIC FAIL' branded onto their foreheads.
i resent that!
i also somewhat agree... if i wasnt dealing with a laptop and very limited storage i would have done that..
on the QA part... the QA department needs a banner that says "12.5.07 Never Forget"

Originally by: Thenoran I run on Media Center Edition with SP2, Windows is on C: drive and EVE is on D: drive, can I safely upgrade from Client to Premium (by using the ingame thingy at Graphics setting)?
you were safe from the start, and the patch for download now is fixed anyway. this only effected you if you downloaded the patch right after it was made available.

The only way CCP could prevent anyone from trying it on is to not pay out anything at all. Sad? Yes, but its the only way forward without having 50,000 people claiming that their systems are useless when perhaps just 5% of those are genuine cases.
im sure if CCP wanted to they could figure out a way to do it. its not my job to think of that way though
Originally by: Kayodaishii I have Xp media center, and guess what, my boot.ini file is missing... what do I write at the end of the document???
uh.. read the first post dude.
Originally by: proclaimed HERETIC the new patch had a problem.
lies. all lies. there is nothing wrong with eve. everything is fine. nothing to see here. there is no problem.

Originally by: Vikarion I think I can help this.
If you downloaded the premium content patch, and you have windows XP, and EvE is on the same hard drive that Windows is on, do not turn off your computer. It will not start again. Instead, follow the directions in the first post. Period. Whining will make your computer burst into flames.
Think that will help?
also note that it only applies if you downloaded the patch within the first ~2 hours of its release. after that it was fixed.
