Originally by: Scorp what is with the lack of morality and complete idiocy that comes to this board, this guy obviously has very little computer knowledge, he trusts his support from the person he bought the computer from and only has one computer to get on the internet to supposedly check what the problem is. get a life all of you this is a horrible way to treat any one and if this happened to any of you in person you would want to kill the person telling you all this.....
now the rants over, im sorry to hear about your problems I was one of the lucky ones with all of the pre-req's to kill my boot.ini but never happened. I hope you get something sorted but its hard to say if CCP should be a part of your problem.
Scorp not bashing the guy there are alot of serious case's out there and alot of people with no computer knowledge as you have said, just his post seems fishy, as in how did he delete his HD if he did not have the Dell CD's to access a Command promt?

You can get to the command prompt, via any windows CD, ERD.
Also i'm not 100% sure on this, but you can press F8 before that error sticks it's head up and load it that way, (I think)
Originally by: Tarminic You honestly paid a hundred dollars to someone to fix this? Unless they gave you a blowjob for free afterwards, it wasn't worth it.

Reason: you need Dell to send you recovery CD's, if you did not have recovery CD's how did you enter command promt to format your HD?
Ummm.. why does everyone keep saying that the original poster formatted his computer? No where did he say he formatted his machine.
He mentioned that he lost his files. The reason why he mentioned it is because when Dell (or any computer manufacturer for that matter) has an issue that prevents you from accessing your computer, they have one of two options:
1) If the user was lucky enough to select the checkbox to include a copy of Windows XP/Vista with your machine for the extra $10-20, you will be able to use the Recovery install on the Windows disk and the user gets to keep all their files.
2) If the user only has the Restore CDs from Dell/Gateway/etc. - When you insert the disks, it will reformat the system and reinstall everything.
Unfortunetly, most people do not have the disks for their computers because you are required to pay extra for the media now. So, when a non-technical Eve player gets burned by this, they will loose their files.
Heh.. non-technical Eve player. Sounds like an oxymoron.
To the OP: Since you obviously have internet access now..there are a few threads on the forums posted today that have links to start up disks. Follow the instructions on the front page of the website and you should be all fixed up..... and invest in a backup. Your term papers will thank you.

Originally by: Torothin being that Im not tech savvy I rebooted before the warning. Found I could not log on or anything to windows or even access it. I ended up calling Dell support found out that my warranty had expired and had to fork out $39.99 for customer service. I then lost all previous files and everything else for that matter along with final exam presentations and still can't use my pc until the recovery cd's are shipped in. Im not considered about the inconveniance Im more concerned about the extra 39.99 I had to pay ontop of what I pay to play this game in the first place. Ive been playing for well over 4.5 years and am a satisified customer. Should CCP credit me 39.99 for the inconvenience they have caused?
CCP explained (for free) how to fix the problem on this very site.
ANd how exactly was he supposed to read that, when he couldnt log in. He did what any reasonable user would.

Originally by: Flor deMaria Dealers are required to give you installation media for the OS. Most of them get around this requirement by giving you their "Recovery CDs" or a recovery partition, but they are still required to give you something when you buy the computer.
If you can't use your PC until the CDs arrive then you haven't done anything to it and all your stuff is still there, just follow the instructions in one of several threads to recover your Boot.ini file.
If you are still watching this thread id listen to this person. Unless they for some reason had you format your drive, which makes no sense, everythings still there.

This thread must be being replied to by CCP Alts. Thats the only explanation I can come up with for all this CCP ass kissing and excusing their pathetic software testing.
To release software to a customer base of 300,000 people with a bug like this shows CCP up for the bunch of cowboy hackers they are.
Should they pay - of course they should. Will they - I doubt it.
Take legal advice. A friend of mine is already suing them about other issues which all stem from their unpofesional conduct and their attitude that they can get away with anything. The more people take legal action the better chance we have of making them responsive to the people who pay.

Given the sort of crap that slips past quality control for other companies on a pretty much daily basis, I don't think it's fair to single CCP out for it. This has never happened before, they fixed it ASAP, and gave advice on how to fix it and tried to limit the damage it did. Granted, it's a pretty major mistake to let slip past but I'm satisfied that they have taken every reasonable step to mitigate that error.
Quote: Should they pay - of course they should. Will they - I doubt it.
More importantly - CAN they pay? After all, they have no way of determining whether any person's claim against them is genuine. They'd find it very difficult to go around handing out compensation to whoever asks for it because they'll have no guarantee whatsoever that it will be going to somebody who was genuinely inconvenienced by this.

No. They have done nothing actively illegal. Silly, yes - but if making the occasional mistake was enough grounds for litigation then we'd all be in court 24/7. Their legal obligations were filled the moment they alerted everyone to the problem, posted a solution, and fixed the cause of the error. Anything they do from that point onwards is pure charity.
If you do not like the developers of this game, then the only thing holding you to it is your own stubbornness. Nothing would please me more than to see more people put their money where their mouth is and actually quit rather than endlessly posturing and making more noise than a troop of chimpanzees. Their absence would drastically improve the average quality of this game's community. -

That guy shall be reimbursed twice :
once : because people flaming him even once he said he knew nuts bout comp is just proof EVE still got a load of lamers inside
twice : because... erm... excuse me... any modyfication in your boot.ini from a third party program that shall have noth to do with your system integrity is like F bad
(thrice :) in some way this post is bringing up the question of the insurance one software editor shall give to his customers about their system not going useless after installing a patch or whatever. And from what i know, that would be quite a new thing, and quite a must-be in the coming web 3.0 years
He11 this is not like this guy was asking reimbursement from his motherboard after flashing his bios !
@ Torothin : if you didn't not format your hard drive disk, u can still get back files from it, just remove it from your pc, bring it to any comps' dealer, and tell him u want your infos back :) [then pay the price]
