I think CCP should now look at developing a specialised salvaging/looting ship, since their rather clumsy effort at nerfing mineral compression has now made the preferred looting ship (the destroyer) rather impractical.
I used to use a Thrasher for salvage & looting - with 8 highs it could fit 4 salvager and 4 tractor beam, an mwd and cap recharger meant you could zip round between the +20km cans easily enough, and a couple cargo expanders in low gave me 650m3 - perfect for looting, with the occasional run back to station to drop off the loot.
Of course, with the massive modules, this point is now reached after about 2 spawns - I am given to understand this bloating of modules was to nerf mineral-compression techniques, and I can't believe salvagers/looters were intended to be nerfed as a result of this. (for evidence that looting was borderline worthwhile as it was, simply recall a visit to any NPCing system, and see how many people left wrecks behind anyway - pre module bloat!)
Anyway CCP - here's what I want: a fairly nippy ship like a destroyer specialised for salvaging / looting (maybe with tractor and salvager range bonuses?) and a (expanders fitted) hold of somewhere in the region of 1,500 - 2,000 m3 so I can still lug a good few spawns worth of loot with the new loot sizes.
This is a fairly modest size hold given the new massive module sizes, but not so big that puts it into the realms of hauler cargo's
Oh, and probably some kind of gimp on turrets, so people don't put weapons on where the salvagers are supposed to go.
And that's it! - mineral compression successfully nerfed, and NPC looting/salvaging now has a viable option again!

riddle me this, couldn't you work around the item enlargement by only taking the best and therefore smallest named loot each time--unless I'm missing something and the t1 refines for more than named, what reason is there to just take everything? ___ Eve Players are not very smart. If i go back to salvaging, I fly a nano fit ship, for speed... forget loot. If i get loot, its best named. After all, salvaging takes only a few m3 per mission... its the loot that takes up the space.

Personally I use a Exequror equiped with: 2 tractors 2 salvagers 3 Cargohold Expander 2's 1 10MN afterburner
However I do have to say that a deticated salvager, either racial based or created by a company similar to ORE would be welcomed.

In theory I could - but since the nerf was, ostensibly, intended to nerf mineral compression, then presumably the knock-on nerf to looting was unintended. This notion is supported somewhat by the fact that drones were re-sized and drone bays modified to suit - no difference to drone users but easier looting of drones.
Secondly, when I looted a wreck previously, it was a (relatively) quick process of selecting all, dragging and dropping - with your workaround I am going to have to sift through each module, at least for an initial period until I intuitively know which modules are bloated or not.
Why should I have to do this, when the nerf was not intended to be punitive towrds people undertaking my activity?
I would welcome other suggestions of ways to keep the mineral compression nerf in place without penalising looting, but a ship specialised to the task seems to be one way out that I think CCP should at least explore.

i think this is a great idea. it gives more options for the players, which is always a plus for an mmo, and it expands the eve universe. if CCP did this, though, i think they'd need some sort of salvage bonus for the ships like 5% better salvage (or however it would be phrased) per looter level.

The most attractive thing for a dedicated salvager ship would be a bonus to tractor beam range. Perhaps +5 km per Destroyer skill level. With a base of 20 km, Destroyer 5 would give you a range of 45 km, which would be very, very sweet. Or make a new ship class and a new skill called Salvage Ships.
Second-most attractive would be cargo capacity, and third-most attractive probably speed (a destroyer with 3 expanded cargohold in the LOW slots is pretty slow, even with an AB).
A salvage chance bonus isn't actually needed. With Salvaging 4, the actual salvaging part goes very quickly. That which takes time is getting your ship to the wreck, or getting the wreck to your ship.

Indeed a salvaging ship would not only be a bonus for PvE people but also fits in with the EVE universe quite nicely. Yep, based off a Destroyer hull makes sense as well. Although a civillian company doing it would mean the devs don't have to generate lots of new models... just one.
8 Highs (no turreted/missles just highs) 2/3 Meds 3/4 Lows (Lots o' expanders)
Give it a starting frigates shields/armour and a destroyers hull hit points for no other reason than it's not a combat ship... if you want to turn it in to a Neut/NOS boat go right ahead but a frigate will pop it.
Call it a starting cargo hold of 600m3. Drone bay space for 2 drones.
Bonuses to either Salvager, Tractor range or... Salvaging Drones.

I suggest as follows * salvaging (heavy) drone with some cargo capacity * long range tractor beams
or sth like "tractor multibeams" bubble ______________________________________________

The live dev blog said that they are removing all large/changed m3 items and replacing them with equal isk value but smaller m3, so this will be fixed in the boost patch or the following patch.
So you will be able to use your destroyer again soon and not have any m3 issues. If Eve were a person, that person would vote for Ron Paul. |

O.R.E. built salvaging ship could be useful.
No turret/missile bays, eight high slots, for fitting 4/4 tractors/salvagers and bonus to tractor and salvager with each level for the ship skill.
Decent cap so those tractors and salvagers can run at least few cycles.
8 high slots, 3 mids and 3 lows should be enough to get a decent salvaging ship with a crappy armor and no offensive capabilities.
And 1500 m3 cargo hold without expanders. One rig slot. Drone bay? Perhaps if there are salvaging drones.
