the polar ice cap floats so has already displaced it's mass and tehrefore when it melts will hardly effect sea levels.
ice on land is a different matter, such as greenland, northern russia and oh i dunno, large chunks of antartica.

London, not really the safest place to put server, in my opinion.
some to northern cadada (canadian sheild)
Earthquake...only seen 1-2 in 20 years and the biggest was a 4 on reichter squale.
and you would be safe from the virgin mobile and other greedy compagnies on the network.
Oh and cost for cooling the equipment can be minimized used some ventilation, temperate being rather low all the time ^^

This is a remarkably good point. I'm no scientist, but as far as I know, water is one of the few compounds that takes up less space in it's liquid state than when it is solid.
Britain is threatened by the dissolution of the gulf stream, but is there any reason to think that water levels will rise much? Or will they in fact sink?
Or will it just get cold?

Now take a broader glass. Fill the middle with sand. Lay the icecubes on the land. Fill the rest with water. Look and behold. Won't work for the Northpole, but the Southpole is a continent right? -- the above is my personal opinion and does not necessarily reflect that of the little voices in my head

Hmmm...
I'm beginning to wonder now.
If the sea ice melts, sea level will drop. If the land ice melts, sea level will rise...
So they will probably even out. We're in no big danger anyway, this happens every 250,000 years, doesn't it?
Anyway - never mind - no one can calculate it!
Or would someone like to try? That would be interesting...

Britain is threatened by the dissolution of the gulf stream, but is there any reason to think that water levels will rise much? Or will they in fact sink?
Indeed a good point! It is one of the anomalies of water that it is most dense at 4 ŚC. Ice is less dense than water - that is why ice blocks swim on water and don't sink onto the bottom of the ocean.
Therefore melting iceblocks swimming in the water not only won't rise the waterlevel but acrually decrease it!
The rise of the global sealevel comes from the fact that ice not in the water (for example at greenland and at the south pole) is melting and even more important, that warmer water needs more space, so the heating up of the oceans increases the level already - ice or not.
Now to the rift. As aleady explained, the rift in iceland is part of the mid-atlantic ridge which can be found across the whole length of the atlantic ocean. It is expanding and that is a more or less harmless process, at least compared to those places where the tectonical plates are subduced like at the west coast of south america or at the whole southeast asia - this subducing results in explosive and dangerous vulcanos (Mt St. Helens in US or Pinatubo at the Phillipines as examples). The expanding rift creates a more or less continuous vulcanism with lots of lava but not with big and extremely dangerous explosions.
The conculusion: CCP can safely continue to work on their 200-year plan!!
*cheers*

Global warming is a theory not scientific fact like some people would have you believe, in fact i came across and old discovery from years and years ago with a huge article about global warming that discussed the theory in great detail and said people would not even be able to tell if it was fact or not until something like 2020 something or other when certain man made pollutants would reach detectable levels in the atmosphere.
Never mind that 20 some odd years ago scientists were running around screaming about global cooling and its dangers, so take all these alarmists after massive grants for research and pizza money with a grain of salt.
Heck i remember back in high school learning that the earth was still coming out of the last ice age, if that is the case you would expect the earth to warm some on its own.
Besides there are asteroids that could wipe out 98% of all life on earth in the blink of an eye and certainly take out the eve servers and iceland. There are massive solar flares that could fry all electronics, power systems, satellites, etc in one swoop and destroy eve. Never mind super massive tidal waves that can occur when coastal shelfs fall into the ocean, like california and other places around the world that will devestate costal areas, islands. across the globe and possibly hit iceland.
cheery stuff eh?

I doubt the fact that the servers are flooded is going to make much impression compared to the rest of our problems if that happens....

Iceland very rarely has major earthquakes, and the volcanic eruptions aren't violent, its more like some syrup slowly coming out of a fissure, its not particularly dangerous as you could walk away from it.

I think there would be a fair warning for a major eruption and a lot of CCP is now made up out of foreigners so we can all fly back to our own country and maybe even demand our country to pick us up.
And then we ( Ok maybe just me) point and laugh at the Icelanders

That does not work because only the SMALLER pole cap is a piece of ice. The LARGE HUGE one in south is a HUGE rock larger than north america and its covered in Kilometer depth Ice.

Certainly the land ice in Antarctica would have an impact on mean sea levels. But I thought, and I'm not sure on this, that the arctic ice cap is expected to be impacted more than the antarctic. When someone mentioned Al Gore talking about the Polar Ice Cap melting, I took the wording to mean the stuff up north. Perhaps "Polar Ice Cap" is also a technical term for what's down south, but I'd think suspect the scientific community wouldn't use the same term to refer to what's up north and down south. "Glaciated Continent" or summat. ----- TANSTAAFL

this. it's subduction zones where the bad earthquakes are...

I was told by an engineer once about the building the EVE server is located. It is like an electronic fort knox the whole of London could be destroyed by an atom bomb and the building would still be standing and all the electronics safe. Probably because 3 of the worlds major banks feed through the same building.

However, even though Iceland has both volcanoes and the potential for earthquakes, I think the chances of CCP being pulled into a rift is pretty minimal.
I don't think CCP has to worry about being pulled into a rift but release another patch like this last one and I'm sure the probabilty of CCP being pushed in will be quite high.

London rarely has earthquakes.
It is however prone to floods. Especially considering Mr. Al Gore tells us that in 7 years the north pole icecap will be gone and everyone on islands will drown :)
CCP, you have 7 years to move the servers or we will DIE!
Please don't listen to Mr. Gore. We don't even listen to him here in the states especially since he "invented the internet".
Ooh - back on topic...I am sure the servers are in a nice safe place. As for CCP, they also have an office through White Wolf in Georgia, USA. ________________________

I know this is a bit off topic, but some that replied here brought up global warming - Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger has already come up with a great plan to defeat global warming - we just need to move the Earth a few inches further away from the sun.
