So I'm new and from what i've seen the only pvp that takes place is a group of people getting together to just go roam around and ambush some poor sap. No competition and no benefit from doing it besides the fact of just getting a kill. Besides 0.0 pvping to gain territory and protect there own, what purpose would anyone like me have to do it. I know I know its a "sandbox game" you can do what you want, but that's like saying to a high school basketball team "sure you can play ball, but only against NBA players, HAVE FUN:)". For a new player like me i would have no chance pvping without getting completely crushed so is there really any reason for me to attempt to pvp till i get like a years worth of SP and ISK, and don't say to get experience pvping because i don't think i need practice getting blown up( I'm guessing that's the easy part). I know pvp and all that goodness is what makes eve what it is. So really what I'm asking is grinding out missions or grinding rocks my only option for the next YEAR. Because that really sounds boring.
P.S Take it easy I'm new and just asking |

I would say that yes, you will lose ships to begin with but if you fly cheap stuff you can learn lessons that will make you more effective as you get into more expensive ships. By that time you should be earning enough to not worry about losing a cruiser or BC. Everybody loses ships, even experienced pilots, but those who don't sit around waiting for their sp or isk to mount up will gain more from making mistakes and will learn more lessons than those who wait for a long time.
Give Red vs Blue a try for a couple of weeks, see what you think. Get some cheap frigates kitted out and stick to a budget, if you need help then perhaps some of the older pilots in those corps might help you out. It's all just experience, sp aren't as effective as that. in other MMO's stupid people are annoying. In EVE they are a valuable resource /facebrick for those times when /facepalm just isn't enough

Back when I was a noob and thought mining was good money, I too thought like this.
Then one day I got tired of people harassing me all the time and decided to fight back. And I discovered that all that BS people had been telling me about raw SP totals not mattering much so long as you focused your skill training was actually true.
Shooting people was fun. After I'd shot enough people I ended up in corps where your killboard standings and your e-peen are one and the same, which made up for the times when shooting people wasn't quite as much fun anymore, and after I'd gotten a few dozen of my own ships blown I totally stopped caring about my ships as anything other than a disposable vehicle to play EvE in.
I took a couple of long breaks from EvE. I have half as much SP as an equivalent character of the same age but I do just fine because rather than being able to fly all ships poorly I can fly a couple of races very well, and it just doesn't matter anymore, if it ever did.
Now I pvp to pvp. It's kind of a zen thing. I have good corpmates to fly with, we have plenty of people to shoot at, we have our little corner of Stain to carebear in (or not, depending on who's decided to come visit us), and sure there may not be any real point when all is said and done but tbh I don't see how that's any different from any other MMO out there, save in EvE I'm not a slave to an NPC (or the devs telling me what content I should and should not be running and with whom, which is even worse). Combat vets purposely will roll new toons, which obviously have low SP.. to get more fights without a reputation behind them. And they will succeed and get kills because of their knowledge on game mechanics, ship fits/abilities, and their obvious experince/skill at fighting.
You can, and should.. read up on game mechanics and atleast somewhat understand how tracking, sig rez, sig radius, transversal/angular velocity, MWD bloom, falloff, optimal and such work. And then go get your ass killed, a lot.
Cheap frigs can kill expensive battleships.
The game really can be what you make of it.. it is upto you though. Don't let other people's jaded view points hold you back.. how can you simply know and understand.. until you actually try things for yourself?
Take what you keep.. defend what you own. Be a pimp, and don't be someone's *****. It is easier to be a lil *****, all you have to do is lay down and spread'em, then whine a lot.. take the harder route, be a pimp and own. |

So pretty much it's ALL about the corp your in huh. So dumb question then but how am i supposed to find a good one besides believing what they tell me cuz let's face it, truth has no place on the internet. I don't want to have to bounce through 50 corps to find a good one because that will probably look bad. Also I've noticed that even though the corp says it has like 100 members, there's only like 5 guys that actually play anymore. |

Do your due diligence. Ask alot of questions, infer and extrapolate, and use various 3rd party resources to help you figure out if what they say is true or incorrect. Think outside the box. Just because this is all virtual doesn't mean you should accept the preconceived notion that you're powerless.
PS- I used to recruit and was also able to deduce if an applicant was lying to me as well. So it goes both ways. Apparently, once you create a sig. You can't completely delete it. So this is my sig...for now. |

Depends why you fought in the first place. Could be revenege, could be for justice and to help others, could be to save friends, could be to get tears, could be defense of ship/ideals/space, could be they have something really expensive n shiny you want to hack off their ship for yourself.
Or could simply result in being an adrenline junky. When there is actual lose.. effort into your ship's existence and the thought that the ship could very well go bye bye forever.. no waking up in a station with your ship all safe n clean. Such creates extra adrenline, atleast for me.. than other MMOs with PvP elements. Makes the eyes widen, and heart race a bit more (I suggest learning to control it over time to avoid making mistakes from unclear thought).
As far as finding a good one.. check adverts of corps and see what they offer, what they do. Take it a step further and look them up on Battleclinic and/or griefwatch and see how many kills/loses per week, and how many members are active, and what kind of style fighting they seem to prefer to associate with. And then, insert what you think you are looking for.. and give the one you like a shout.

You don't have to wait a year to get PvP capable. If you are worried about being crushed by higher skill players you have to learn to rely on your gang, instead of worrying about being as good as some fictional opponent think what can I do for my Gang to help them win. I hated the whole idea of PvP in EVE when I started and have a whole page of terribly fit solo loss mails to show for it. I then started researching fits, tactics and directed my training to suit them and suddenly things got a lot better for me.
Waiting a year is not something you need to do to get a gang capable ship that will be a genuine help. Tackle Rifters / Merlins are an easy train and for a real combat ship the Drake and Cane are the general direction you want to go. They are the common soldiers of EVE, the Ships of the People. Basically what you want is a T2 Weapon System, 5 T2 Drones and a T2 Tank with Support Skills at 4. This does not take to long to achieve and a meta 2-3 Gun fit Battlecruiser with LvL 4 Ship, Weapon, Tank and Support Skills is quite acceptable in most gangs.
The important thing is finding folks to fly with.
[Hurricane, My First Cane] Damage Control II Tracking Enhancer II Tracking Enhancer II Nanofiber Internal Structure II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II
Large Shield Extender II Invulnerability Field II Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive Warp Disruptor II

Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
Warrior II x5 Warrior II x1
Here was my first real PvP Ship. I got T2 Auto's soon after, researched the fit and I saw good success with it. Flying a relatively skilled Battlecruiser like a Drake or a Cane is a liberating thing. They're is a reason most people don't role around in T1 Cruisers, Battlecruisers are everywhere and once you have a well skilled, properly fitted easily replaceable Battlecruiser flying in a coordinated Gang you won't feel like a newbie anymore.
The reason I fly PvP is it is just fun and excitement. It is something to do. You grind up so a ship like this doesn't hurt your wallet then you go for it.
I have done RvB and it is the most Fun I ever have had in EVE. It is an amazing Corp with a very low cost entry to PvP but I would suggest a few hundred mil and pre setting up your ships at the headquarters of the Corp you choose. Mostly Cruisers and Frigates I would pick a race and start focusing. I recommend it if you have the ISK.
Just remember the 3 most Important things to do before PvP'ing.
1. Find Gang Mates. 2. Research, Research, Research Everything from fits to tactics. 3. Consider your Ship gone before you fly it. I don't mean you will loose it but if life without that ship deadends your game you are not ready to fly it. Once you can take it out and its lose won't effect your PvP / PvE future you are ready to fly it.
So if you want to PvP start earning a nest egg and start researching fits. Starter PvP is a Mountain in this game and you are at the Base. Staring at it won't help so start now even if it is only preparing yourself for the climb. |

When you say "I'm new" I really don't know what you mean but if by new you mean 6 months? There really is a point where it is moot how many skill points you have or I have.
A 6 month char can in fact cap Assault frigate skills for any given race. You would be as good as I am in that frigate and while I might beat you on experience, the raw power of the skill points and the ship in a 1 vs 1 we would end in a draw alot of times.
Also, most battles as you said are fleet battles. Ships in EVE are all niche and have holes in thier function. There is no ship that can handle any situation. There are fleets that can do that but they are huge, in the thousands and hard to manage in EVE. I think like you after 7 years. I PvP with purpose or I don't PvP. I refuse to grief, I won't abide by the not blue shoot it and I will never PvP for the sole purpose of "tears". It is not in my nature to be hatefull like that, I don't find it entertaining. So I find situations that allow me to pvP within my guide. I find people who think the same way and I fleet to defend them. I have never lost a ship or got a killmail defending myself. It has 100% defending others. Thats my niche. Find yours.

It doesn't matter if you are in an all T1 fit frigate, if you can get into a fleet of half decent pilots, then do it. Do it sooner than later.
There is SOOOO much more to combat in Eve than just shooting at other people. It's a mind bogglingly complicated set of rules, timers, methods, attacks, counters, on and on. Even if you never find a target or if you are two-shot killed in your first engagement- you will have gained a mountain of new information by the time you're done.
In fact, actual pew pew combat really is sorta hard to get to SP and isk-wise. In anything but a well fit ship you just won't last long enough to really learn much under fire. Even shiny fit ships don't survive long when primaried or just outflown by your enemy.
But there's just so much more to it than the wild a$$ furballs out in space- that just getting into fleets and whoring KMs by doing .02% of the damage will still teach you volumes more than any post or guide. Get voice comms, ask questions- Eve vets freaking LOVE to blather on and on- trust me.
Yes, it does make a huge difference having the ability to T2 fit a ship, or use T2 ships themselves. But that is just one very small facet to a much larger world of PvP that simple experience is the best teacher for.
Plus, it's fun. That's all it needs to be. |

To each his own.
But the big part in roams is that you are never 100% sure what you might deal with. You can fit your gang of ships to be as well rounded/specialized/off-beat as you can... but there is always that chance that you will run into another gang (be it veteran or newbie) or the [rare] solo player that is specifically prepared to deal with your group. The "competition factor" comes from not being prepared for all scenarios you might run into and how you best deal with said situation.
Koodo Marilias wrote:what purpose would anyone like me have to do it. I know I know its a "sandbox game" you can do what you want, but that's like saying to a high school basketball team "sure you can play ball, but only against NBA players, HAVE FUN:)".
By being thrown into the "hardcore" early on you know [more or less] what to expect and can start learning sooner. Yeah... you won't "win" early on... but you will see what tactics other player use and have more time to devise counter-tactics to get around the other players' tactics... even with a "limited" skill-set.
Koodo Marilias wrote:For a new player like me i would have no chance pvping without getting completely crushed so is there really any reason for me to attempt to pvp till i get like a years worth of SP and ISK, and don't say to get experience pvping because i don't think i need practice getting blown up( I'm guessing that's the easy part).
Getting "blown up" is a fact of life for any PvP player. In fact... anytime you undock you should prepared for the off-chance that you will be shot at... for any reason. If you are "blown up" it means that the other player used superior tactics, ships, had superior skills, etc. and you need to find a way around that.
Koodo Marilias wrote: I know pvp and all that goodness is what makes eve what it is. So really what I'm asking is grinding out missions or grinding rocks my only option for the next YEAR. Because that really sounds boring.
Pro-tip: You don't need "the best" skills to compete. Outside of "core skills" (which take about a month to train) you can be PvP ready by merely getting most of your skills in a specific area to level 4. Getting skills to level 5 only adds an extra 5% here... 2% there... and that is nothing that a few well placed mods and/or tactics can't get around. Just remember... only a certain amount of skills apply to any one ship or mod at any one time... and players can only fly one ship at a time. To try to determine who has the better combination of pilot skills, player skills, ship fit, tactics, and strategy.
Also for the lulz.
Also because without pvp the market would collapse and production alts around the cosmos would go idle and CCP would lose subs and shut down the game.
You don't want CCP to have to shut down, do you? Do you?!?
Very good then! PVP!

1.) There are a great number of bad fits out there. A T1 frig with meta 4 hardware, backed by lvl 4 skills, can kill them easily.
2.) I consider T1 frigs the 'Great Equalizer'. There is no margin for error. The ammo you load in your guns (before the fight) can determine the winner.
Take a perfectly new player... someone who's never played Eve in his life... and give him 60 trillion isk. Give him all level 5 skills. Give him faction-fit pirate battleships and every insanely-priced implant in the game. Now... put that player in lowsec and watch the train wreck commence. He will lose every damn thing he owns.
Take a veteran player who has PvP'ed for a year. Biomass his character, give him a brand new one with no skills trained. He will be killing people within the week.

Maybe PVP because its fun?
Nothing in this game - admittedly my time is limited - has got my blood pumping, heart pounding and given me a rush like PVP has. Even though 9 times out of 10 i die, sometimes get podded too for good measure, i cant imagine getting the same experience from doing anything else within EVE.
Skill points are important, but real skills - as in piloting, not Skillpoints - count for more i think.
Many people have told me of idiot PVP'ers who fly expensive ships badly and get spanked by cheap and easily replacable ships by people that actually have skills when PVP'ing.
But a load of rifters ( or your racial frig type ) and fit them out cheaply and go into low sec and learn how to use your D-scan to find other frigs and dont be afraid of dying, because it will happen A LOT at first. http://roxwar.blogspot.com/ |

In my opinion, EVERY action you take EVERYWHERE, should reflect a concord bounty. So in other words, if you shoot first, or steal etc, your bounty increases. This also applys to standings.

Like everyone said, fly in frigs and learn stuff.
By the time you get old enough to be flying expensive stuff the game becomes a huge efficiency war, so just going out and losing stuff sort of kills your reputation.
I would enjoy it while you can.
If I can suggest a corp Red vs Blue is a fantastic place for the young PvPer. |

By any rational measure an individual "wins" EVE by not fighting.
There are a few exceptions where you are part of a profitable enterprise that requires defense ad conquest but even this in most cases isnt as profitable as the players think.

Asking 'why pvp in eve' is pretty much the same as asking 'why play eve'. I play eve cos it's fun. I pvp cos it's fun. There really is no other reason.
After all, the whole purpose of a game is to entertain you. When other aspects of eve stopped entertaining me I turned to pvp and found it to be about so much more than I ever imagined. I too thought that eve combat was all about selecting orbit and hitting f keys. The thing is, if you don't enjoy going further down that rabbit hole then you probably won't enjoy the final destination either

Honestly, putting millions of dollars on the line for just a few moments in time is lots of fun and extremely satisfying.
Fair fights aren't as hard to come by as people make it out to be. Generally, rolling with a fleet of at least 10 people will get you plenty of fair fights. |

Faction Warfare can be fun. Fleet up and destroy the evil frogs (or silly pies).
When I'm solo, PVP is more fun in the avoidance of it. The most fun I have in this game is venturing out into dangerous space, avoiding some of the most clever mobs in any MMO, and coming back with my cargohold stuffed with treasure. I don't sell or even use the stuff. My deadspace mods are like trophies. :-) |

I think one of the best things about EvE is people can define their own victory conditions. My rational measure of winning at EvE is being ranked highly on Battleclinic. From that perspective certain activites that cost a fair bit of ISK but generate a lot of points (like this weekend's suicide ganking spree in Tash Murkon , which cost about 500M when all was said and done since I purchased an Orca specifically for that purpose, ofc I still have the Orca so future ops won't be so spendy, but I digress...) move me closer to winning. But if you think winning is having a lot of ISK, then that doesn't make much sense at all. If you accept that other people have their own agendas and their own way of going about them, the actions of people who have a different playstyle than you suddenly make a lot more sense. I'll give you some helpful advice Join a decent PvP corp - whether it be 0.0, low sec or high sec PvP. You can see whether there a decent corp by doing a simple google search on their name.. There killboard will come up and you can see how often they do PvP, whether they do small gang or blob and where abouts they do all this.. Then after you've done all of that you can choose to join or simply leave it. Most PvP corps are happy to take newer players since you're pretty much a blank slate - you can train towards skills/ships that would be most beneficial to the corp. Plus in the meanwhile some extra tackle is always helpful.
High Sec corps PvP to defend their POS, merc for money or grief for money OR grief for the sheer hell of it. Low Sec PvP corps just like to blow the **** out of everything. 0.0 corps PvP to defend their space.
And then theres WH corps.. But they tend to be pretty elite and hardcore imo so I'd start with one of the above first.
Just have a look about and see what suits you best.. getting into a decent corp should be of no concern. Most good PvP corps have a "Training/University" corp anyway.
Ultimately PvP is the endgame of eve.. Whether it is to control a profitable system, or to just build up your reputation as a decent PvPer. Even as a successful industrialist you'll ultimately be engaging in PvP because there will be others who will want to take your business/undercut you at every oppurtunity. There are plenty of practical uses for PvP (it's not completely pointless.) But personally I just PvP because I find it enjoyable.. Theres nothing better than small gang warfare, just wait until your on the winning side - you'll never look back. Good luck! |

The fun in fighting might be the smugness that comes with knowing player behaviors and game mechanics well enough that you can readily identify both the other guy's piloting fuckups and his ship's weaknesses and then exploit these to your advantage. The icing is that you get to keep his stuff because you are smart and he is dumb.
Or maybe you get off on humiliating the loser in local.
Or it could just be doing something with your internet space brosefs a little more adventurous than shooting rocks. All sorts of opportunities and crazy **** happens outside of highsec.
Personally, after spending my first year grinding missions and even ******* mining, the thought of ever doing that again sickens me.
But yeah, I'm gonna parrot the "Join RvB" thing. You will have fun while learning game mechanics (on the cheap with cheap-fit T1 frigates). You will like fighting. It's the only redeeming feature of this game, tbh. |

Why pvp? Why do people play baseball, football (american or international versions) or tennis? Why do some race cars, motorcycles or bicycles? It's all for the fun and competition.
Some people get their enjoyment out of shooting NPCs or rocks, and I have no problem with that. I've done that and it can provide a level of enjoyment. But it's kinda like going to the batting cage versus playing a game of baseball. The batting cage pitching machine throws the same kind of pitch over and over without using any kind of "strategy" to fool you. In a live game, it's real competition, though, where the pitcher is trying to do things to make you fail, and you are trying to succeed in beating his team. While it can be fun to spend some time in the cage, it just doesn't compare to the real game.
I've never driven a race car, but I'll bet that driving laps around a track, trying to beat your previous best time can be a challenge and be some fun. But when you have 15 other drivers out there bumping, blocking, and trying to pass you, I bet it's a whole lot more fun.
That's why I pvp. I love the tactical strategy and maneuvering, especially the "sneak". The gathering of intel, guessing about how the other guy is fit (standard setup or does he have an oddball fit that might be a perfect counter to me?), who he might have as backup, how he will react when I decloak next to him, etc. Shooting rats in a mission or site just doesn't have the same element of the unknown. They always react the same way and are always fit the same way.
Ultimately, it is all a game. In real life I would never be the mean jerk. I'm about as nice a guy as you would ever meet and I'll go far out of my way to help you in any way I can. But EVE is a game where nobody actually gets hurt, and I'm gonna do everything in my power to beat you down and win. If I fail and you win, nice job. I'll go home (or wake up in a clone vat) with a smile on my face, knowing that I entered the competition rather than sitting in the stands. I'll learn my lesson and be better prepared for the next time.
It's all pixels and fun.

That's what I've been saying is wrong with this game the whole time, PvPers claim say you shouldn't force your playstyle on them, but their playstyle is pretty much focused on making other people as miserable as possible in the game, it doesn't make any sense.
