For X3, make sure you get the newest patch and do not start it up without it. They originally had Starforce protection on it, which messed up peoples computer pretty badly. Patch version 2+ I believe it is removed the starforce protection, as well as I believe the need for the actual disc. And as others said, it can be fun for a bit, but it does start to get boring after a while, since it is in the end only single player. If your looking for a good single player, module oriented FPS, then I can think of nothing better then mech warrior (I like MW4, merceneries best). It may be old, but its dang fun. It of course has a great multiplayer mode, but nobody seems to play it online anymore. In anycase I like to play it when I go on road trips, or anytime when I cant get internet connection.

MW4 is garbage that crapped all over the Mechwarrior franchise.
If you really want to play a Mechwarrior game, look for MW2 or MW2: Mercs. Neither will work on XP alone, so you'll need DOSbox, IIRC.
Sins of a Solar Empire, which has yet to be released, looks vaguely Eve-like...however, that's an RTS. It's being done by the same guys who did GalCivII

I was SO looking forward to Battlecruiser: Mellenium (spelling?). Mostly due to the fact that I bought it on the way to a weekend event and couldn't play it until three days later. That entire time, I read and reread the manual thinking, "this is going to kick ass".
Well, it didn't. As much as it WANTED to be cool, it just didn't deliver. I'm all for complicated games as it keeps the idiots away, but this one was too complicated for no reason other than the game's creator has a severe case of egocentrism.

I only know one person who's managed to actually get past the learning curve on that game (A game developer of all people) It's also one of the only games* I've ever truely given up on because it's too damned complex/awkward/buggy to get a feel for it. The bits I DID manage to figure out (landing on planets / launching fighters / pointing the ships solar panels at the sun for faster energy regen) were pretty nice concept-wise, but all implemented so horribly it's hard to really describe...
So much potential...
*more a simulation (of what happens when you don't have a QA department or any beta testers to speak of) -----

Errr, doesn't that have Starforce copy protection, though? I used to have it, and while it was an interesting game to play, I prefer being able to use my DVD drive.
EDIT: I also purchased BCM:Gold Edition, aware of the ... past, it has. It has some simply amazing concepts realized in it, though it does have a very steep learning curve that has to be mastered for even mundane tasks to be completed. Unfortunately is it an utterly horrific piece of programming, to be avoided at all costs. The thing would crash on loading, playing, saving and if you so much as looked too hard at it, it'd crash then too. Considering the time required to develop your ship and crew in the game, it was essentially impossible to game in or be anything other than a curio.
* However, once I got (quickly) bored with it, I edited my starting goods and gave my ship some nice new weapons, once I had sold the goods. Then I sat over the moon, dropping Orbit to Surface missiles onto the rebel (?) bases to (sometimes) cue the little impact/explosion animation trailer. Although, the bird-song on the moon seemed a little ... odd.
As far as epic space-games go, I still love Homeworld 1, Cataclysm and HW2. HW1 for the ctrl+z scatter-fire launch command on the missile destroyers, Catacylsm for the Drone frigates and HW2 for the pretty!

Blatantly ignoring your request for stuff with good graphics, I direct you towards X-wing collector's series. The great singleplayer storylines of the first two games, remade in the (for the time) superior graphics engine of x-wing vs. Tie fighter (which had no single player storyline, though that was fixed with the Balance of Power expansion).
Also, no thread like this is complete without me demanding you go play all the Wing Commander games. Yes, that includes Prophecy, not sure why so many people hate that one.

Prophecy was amazing. Sortof like Freespace but with more focus on Storyline (enough Cutscenes it felt as if you were watching a movie) - I don't really see what there is to hate -----

EV Nova is a great game, best shareware game I've seen in a long time. Homeworld is good too but it's more of an RTS. Also if you're into PnP games, Traveler's characters advancement is very similar to that of Eve. Ship combat is a bit different but it's close enough you can figure it out pretty fast. I don't think any material for it is printed anymore but you can find secondhand stuff pretty easily. ----- My in Eve Profile |

I heartily recommend X3, prolly cuz I was a scripter/modder for it a while back, got my stuff on the community list.
It's the closest in spirit to EVE, in many aspects: missions, free-roaming, pirating, building, trading, actual factions and standing, etc. However, due to the complexity of the single-player environment, you need a beefier PC than one you'd use for EVE (even with Trinity).
It was X3 that got me into EVE tho. X3'ers who were also EVE'ers posted in the X3 forums...

My list of spacey type games, plus brief review
Freelancer - Old, but probably the best and most interesting of the single player, FPS style space flightsims. Well worth your time.
X3 - Big learning curve, heavy on economic macromanagement, and heavy reliance on scripts makes the game feel really unfinished. Good for if you want to run a galactic empire.
Darkstar One - Long, fairly interesting plot, not much diversity in starsystems or stuff to put on your ship though.
Escape Velocity Nova - Very old, top-down and text based but youll be hard pressed to find any game with deeper, more immersive content.
Homeworld series - An RTS obviously, but all 3 are very good. Highly recommended; original Homeworld is probably the best scifi game ever made, period.
Mechwarrior series - Not really an Eve type game since theyre not in space, but theyre not as twitchy as normal FPS and they have the sort of persistent stats youre looking for...might be worth a look. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Edited by: yar''gdargen on 16/12/2007 02:21:56 Edited by: yar''gdargen on 16/12/2007 02:21:30 so when i was a kid i bought this game called "tie fighter" and let me just say, despite being made by lucasarts it was the most fun ive ever had. damn, its just great. It doesnt quite do module slots and stuff but the ships are a little more complex than point and shoot. There is engine power management to shields, guns and engines.
Gamespot goes as far as to say "TIE Fighter is the best space combat game ever made."
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/tiefightercollectorscdrom/review.html
i forgot to mention graphics, but it doesnt even matter, i can still have a great time with it. you just need to get a joystic.

I always thought it would be cool if CCP would let people download mission content so they could be run off line. It would be great for the client as there would be no lag and great for the server as tens of thousands of people wouldnt be hogging resources. They could connect as often as needed to "upload" the mission results and obtain the next.
