are there any other games similair to eve (like module slots) that are more of a first person shooter? (you control the ship, click to fire)
i used to play terminus, but i cant find that game anymore, and i might try something like independence war 2.
im hoping for a game with better graphics though.

X3 ?
looks better than eve, but that also means it's more heavy than eve at some points.. plus it's got an ENORMOUS learning curve (you'd imagine eve would be hard to learn.. yet it took me 2 minutes to 'fly' in eve, where it took me 4 hours in X before i figgured out how NOT to crash into ****)
EvE's still better tho tbh.
It was like a baby, it landed on my lap and was helpless and totally defenseless. Then I shot it and bragged about it on a killboard.

Maybe x3? It's got a monolithic learning curve though.

X3.
set aside a nice calm evening to play this game though, as an above poster said it took me some time to figure how to either not crash into things or otherwise shoot them. -------------------------------------------- Threads are stacking-nerfed; the more posts you add the less effective those posts are. mooooooo. |

Forget X3, unless you get the version in its original East European voice acting. The english voice acting (as well as the animation and storyline) are absolutely laughable and horrible.
FreeSpace 2 on the other hand, while being rather old now, is far superior to the X1/2/3 line. -----

Eve is based on Elite:frontier 2. They have just taken it to the next level and then some. The CEO of CPP said in an interview that he was a big fan of Elite in the early 90's and you can see the game is roughly based on Frontier: elite II.

Thing is, the storyline in X3 is about 5% of the total game. Judging it on that is like judging Eve by its agent missions.

Ok, point conceeded.
It was mostly the voice acting that really got on my nerves. The character animation is extremely subpar too. I just.. like my games polished, at least the single-player ones anyway. It just felt.. I don't know.. really rushed somehow. -----

Freelancer is a very cool game. Kind of old by now, but I guess EVE is as well. VERY good story but more of a fps-ish feeling to it than the combat in EVE.

I think, as mentioned loads of times in this thread, X3 is probably the closest you come to EVE 'Offline'. There's a lot of user made mods for it that adds a lot of interesting Pirat-AI and what not, loads of play hours in that game (..if you're in for a few hours of manual reading :p )
And yes Freelancer is a sweet little open-ended game. More twitch-gaming (arcade style) than X3. But it's sure to entertain for quite a while!
Not exactly 'in*****pit'-type of games, but worth a mention:
If you like the more empire-building aspect of EVE, Galactic Civilization II is an awesome game. It's turn-based strategy just like Civilization. Very nice AI, and great living community. You can play it Online also.
Homeworld (1/2) is the best RTS-type of space game I know that can be somewhat compared to EVE. Stunning looks and quite nice fights. Fun in multiplayer also! I know a while back some worked on a EVE-mod for that game, you might be able to dig up posts on this forum - I don't know if the process was halted or what?
Enjoy, and fly safe..

Galactic civilization 2 is fun. X3 is intriguing but I couldn't get into it due to the learning curve. However those ships look HOT!

I'll put it this way.
I used to play X3 a LOT. Then I found Eve. X3 hasn't been installed for a good while now. Eve makes it look cheap and shoddy tbh.
X3 does have a bit of a learning curve it's true, but I think Eve's (overall) is a larger and richer experience.

AFAIK, its still in development. Irritatingly they're not allowed to replace semi-finished versions to the public for testing, under their agreement with CCP. ------

Freelancer, Freespace, etc are pretty much entirely combat-orientated with no focus whatsoever on half the things you'd find in EVE. X3 probably comes closest due to the fact there's an actual economy (though relatively simplistic and the AI dosen't compete with you or anything) and the station-building system is wonderful.
Nothing quite like finding an unexplored ore-rich system in the middle of nowhere, setting up a station loop so you never have to provide external resources to any of them and then feeding it all into your HQ to pump out all the ships you'd ever need - Then throwing them into a Xenon sector to see how long they last
Shipyard/HQ in an unexplored sector Docking with my carrier New Jita complex system Watching my fighters duke it out with Xenon
It's quite fun for a while, though the appeal dosen't last forever (but I guess that's the nature of singleplayer games) It's no EVE and it most certainly is no Elite II: Fronter, but it's a great game nontheless. -----
