They used to make awesome space-sims every other month, what the hell happened? Now it's nothing but WoW clones and FPS with shinier graphics 
I'm trying that EV Nova thing. It's amusing at best, but I'm currently disabled in what appears to be a pirate haven. Every damned one is passing by, boarding, stealing something and buggering off again...

Well, there is always Real Life...
Aside from that, get yourself a joystick and your keyboard, and a copy of x3. Ill give you a hint - try not to use the autopilot too much. No, really... the autopilot of x3 is almost as good as pathfinding as eve's is at getting around jita. play through the plot for the training... on extremly easy. Make sure to read some of the guides on the egosoft forums. (egosoft.com). The only modules you can change are pretty much just your weapons - different weapons are better at different things. There is one that ignores shields altogether.
Homeworld 2
good gameplay, good modding community going on still. Pirates mod is good, PDS, some other stuff. I personally like what the Complex mod has done with the game, changing the game to be territory based instead of resource area based. Most ships are pretty much the same. However, on carriers, motherships, shipyards and battlecruisers (battlecruisers are roughly the same size as a carrier) you can change the modules onboard to a point.

mmmm good game, but tbh i have not been able to play online. The gameplay vs the ai in the plot is pretty good, although there is always the one stealth level that everyone hates, yet is still added. It has full module loadouts - you can switch out the engines, shields(better defense, better stealth, etc) guns (anti-shield, anti-hull, anti-module, area effect, etc). as well, there are different types of drone craft(fighters, bombers, boarding craft) and then other types of stuff.

Errr, doesn't that have Starforce copy protection, though? I used to have it, and while it was an interesting game to play, I prefer being able to use my DVD drive.
I've been tempted to buy this game out of the bargain bins, but have been put off by the StarForce "protection". However, if you buy it as a digital download, it comes without StarForce. Sounds like a good game for $20.

It's a real shame that I-war 2: edge of chaos has only been mentioned once it's a fantastic game and one of the most underated space/piracy/trade games on the market. It's not too old that the graphics are out of date and it plays very nicely if you get a chance I strongly recomend it.

Nexus: Superb fleet combat game. Has amazing graphics and interesting lineship-esque combat system with damage control and micromanagement that isn't too hard to grasp yet is still enjoyable.
Freespace 1 & 2: Epic space combat simulators. You can find the full version of Freespace 2 FREE (it's legal. The source code and the rights were released to the public) AND the amazing engine overhaul called the Source Code Project at this url: http://www.hard-light.net/
Homeworld: The 3 games were amazing, and Homeworld: Cataclysm appears to still be one of the only expansions that not only was as good as the first, but was BETTER.
X3: Closest thing that comes to EVE Offline. I have never played it but it sounds similar (learning curve and all).
If I had an Alt I would probably post with it... |

I think Elite and Frontier are the closest space flight games to EVE, in the sense that they replicate EVE's very open-ended design, which none of the other games mentioned here really do. Sure they'll have open-ended elements but there's still an attempt to funnel your activities toward one direction or another. CCP have said that they looked at Elite/Frontier as their intial design model and when you play EVE this is very obvious. Very old games so good luck getting them working, but worth the effort.

Freelancer is a superb online multiplayer game, and the single player mode has a mean storyline. I definitely would recommend it. In fact, I wouldn't mind if they added some of those background radio chatters in Freelancer to EVE to make the universe seem more alive. I also like the constant flow of NPC traffic in Freelancer, all makes you feel more into the game.

Jumpgate (tm) is a game that is similar to eve-online, you can control your ships with joystick, it is a mmog though, but does have a devoted, if smallish, rp group. If you can forgive the outdated graphics and have decent twitch skills with the joystick, it's a fun game.

I-War 2 is one of the best open ended space games I have played. A lot of people dont relise how cool the game is, the good story and you get your very own Pirate Base hidden in a nebula to work from.
X3 I gave up on due to bugs once I completed it, same story with X2 Actually... :) But I think there is a conquer the universe mod for X3 which would make it fun.

The other only worthy Spacesim would be I-War 2. The game is everything else than easy and and the realistic flight model is hard to handle, but once you figured it is fun to fly and I still hope for an I-War 3.

I still play Privateer now and then, i consider it to be one of the best games ever made. Privateer 2 was allright, but didnt have the same feeling :)
Space Empires IV is kinda like eve, strategy game, turn based. Part V is out aswell, but apart from graphics the IV version is better.

You need to complete the story and then do the Bala Gai research missions to get the HQ. they give you it for free once you complete them (along with an excessively overpowered corvette)

There is indeed a heavy patching, with another content patch coming out soonÖ. The PHQ has been added, and can reverse engineer ships to get a blueprint, repair ships, build ships if you have a BP, and scrap ships at it for spare materials. I did not play x3 much either until the 2.02 or whatever patch came out. Now im semi-additited to it, like i am eve.

I noticed a lot of rts's for a good modern(ish) brother to eve....try port royale or port royale 2....exactly the same frame as eve in a different etting
