Apologies if this has been asked and/or answered before. I had a hunt, I used EVE-Search, I couldn't find an official reply anywhere.
I'd like to know if the flickering target bug is being fixed in the patch tomorrow. If it is, wahey, superb, you rock, etc. If not then are bug reports, FRAPS videos, etc, still needed?
I've tried getting a logserver log of it, but the problem is that it sometimes takes a long time before it starts happening. I find that if the logserver runs for more than a few minutes then it simply refuses to save the workspace, just locking up indefinitely when I try :(
If bugreports are still needed then I'll keep trying and manage it somehow, hopefully with FRAPS captures too. ________________________________________________________________

I get the same flickering bug, celestial object names flicker, text flickers in my system scanner etc etc.
I can stop the flickering if I close down any windows that are minimised and sometimes pinned.
So try that, it works for me.
Not sure if it's fixed in the patch, fingers crossed.

I have indeed tried that. I've also tried changing resolutions, turning LOD on/off, changing vsync, changing AA settings, locking and unlocking objects repeatedly, sacrificing small goats under a full moon and attempting to fix it purely by force of will power alone.
Sadly the only thing that actually works for me is relogging, which is a monumental PITA.
So yes, big fingers crossed for tomorrow, but there's no mention of it in the patch notes (that I can see) and I've seen no mention from a dev about it :( ________________________________________________________________

I've been avidly trying to get this issue to occur on SiSi over the past few days, unfortunately, I don't know what was causing the issue to happen, and as such, I've been unable to recreate the issue.
This could, however be because it might be fixed. -----

It's too late for me to put in any more attempts at fixing this issue at this stage, but I'd really like to know if it's not fixed by the patch that we're putting out. If not, any more information about what might cause it to happen will be appreciated.

Cool, thanks for the response Redundancy.
If it's not fixed for me then I will spend this evening trying to get logserver logs and FRAPS's etc. I have two PC's it happens on, one of them a lot more frequently that the other, so hopefully I'll be able to get a couple of logs of it. ________________________________________________________________

Redundancy, it appears to only appear to me in a few certain missions, Stop the Thief is one of them. I can't remember what others cause it to trigger, but it's definitely happened more than once on Stop the Thief. I'll try and get this log server thingy running next time I do the mission.
PS. I approve of less strobing, more throbbing. -----

My guess is that it is / was a state-leak (settings from doing one thing in the graphics engine leaking over unintentionally to doing something else). The fix that I put in was against the guess that it was 'picking' (figuring out which object your mouse is over), so I tried to guard against that happening.
Trying to work out exactly what you were doing when it starts, and narrowing that down, might help me get a solid reproduction case that I can inspect and fix with confidence, but any information like "usually happens in a mission, happened during this specific one" may help.
Update: Thanks for the information - I'll spend some time today running that mission on a test server and see if I can get anything to happen.

Hmm, let me check my latest fraps, I know it happened during the middle of a fight, maybe i can pick out when it started.

When it happens to me, its almost always after a lock (either me locking something or being locked), and its at its worst in belts as a hole load of 'roids keep glitching between LODs.
It might be something to do with the mouse cursor, as when it "flickers", the name tag actually appears for a split second at the edge of the screen. This is more noticable when its strobing (flickering constantly, only had that once in a mission).
The thing itself isnt too bad, irritating, but the FPS drop i get when it happens is a bloody nightmare. Going from 40 fps to 15-20 in a mission is really annoying.

If it happens only in a certain mission I would bet there are some unique objects there? maybe fog? objects that spin/move? Is one object (inkluding your ship) partly covering the view to the object?

Probably not, I tend to fly zoomed out most of the time so I can see the rats and their location.
However, these themselves could be covering the object.
Interestingly though, there are several fog type objects in Stop the Thief, along with some other stuff. -----

It happens for me in completely random situations. Missioning, PVP, mining, undocking. No real rhyme or reason to it that I have seen, unfortunately. _____________________________

Unlikely. I got it seconds after i ran a gatecamp in caldari space, and there was no smoke/gas/nebula/rats there. All that happened was a raven locked me, then the flicker started.

There might be something to this. In the fraps I have, the flickering starts to happen almost immediately after I'm being targeted by fighters. Maybe has something to do with the AI of drones?

at one point i was told it was caused by shadows being on.

there's the fraps of the point where the flicker started. watch around :30-:45. I start targeting something, and the flicker starts.

A friend of mine cured this by turning his monitor refresh rate down from 85 to 60 which is what it should be for a LCD.

Edited by: 7shining7one7 on 18/12/2007 13:51:30 it seems to happen often when there's "a lot going on". it happens a lot in missions. it seems to start when there's quite a few bs rats. it seems to be some kind of overflow/change triggered by a lot going on.
having a lot of stuff going on seems to be the easiest way to reproduce it aswell. and yes it could have something to do with targetting as others have noted. it seems kinda like a semi failed loading/session/refresh change type of thing.
or it could be something else entirely. hope the above helps to replicate the error.

I can reproduce this problem by opening up market and searching for an item and clicking on it, the market screen blinks and the objects im near start to flicker, when I close market is stops flickering. This is one way I know of that starts the flicker bug.
Also when im mission running and use the ctrl button to lock targets or if I use my shortkey for drones to engage such as ctrl shift e it starts flickering after I use the shortcuts for a while. So thats another way to reproduce the flickering.

Another thing I've just thought of, when that fraps was taken, I was running nhancer with AA on. Since I've turned it off, I've yet to have the flicker occur.

I've noticed it particularly happens on missions with large amounts of volumetric clouds. Which means it happens every time I run a level 4 mission because you guys love your volumetric clouds.
I can usually work through it but it is incredibly annoying. However I have not had to relog when it happens, just dock and undock. Not always the easiest task when I'm tanking 10 BSes 20 cruisers and a billion scramming frigates. -------------------------------- Semper ubi sub ubi

This does not just happen in missions. It just comes random for me, and im a pvper. I have a fraps of me killing a cerberus and then it starts, basically ruining the footage. This is also bad because you cant select the item when the name is somware else on the screen, just when it blinks back. this happens in really fast blinking so it takes sometimes 3 seconds to just select a planet ect, and in those 3 seconds in pvp you could be dead. its a major issue in my view, but when im in 0.0 ratting my sec up it does seem to happen more frequently.

Sure, but apparently it already slipped past as a few things almost inevitably do. I can sit on my arse for a while waiting to get a solid reproduction case and not caring about it, or I can make a best guess at the cause and try and fix an obviously annoying issue on the chance that people won't have to live with it until a patch sometime after Christmas, and I can then follow that up by pro-actively trying to help and get information on the forums.
I choose to care, even if that does make me look fallible to you.

I sure appreciate you looking into to it, even without the solid reproduction case.
All good coders should work this way, instead of just rejecting bug reports saying 'cant reproduce'.

Maybe letting the CCP guys view that footage will help in determining the cause? Just a thought. _________
