It seems to me that the EVEolution of EVE has matched closely real life history.
Before many years ago, we had very skilled warriors (the samurai or knights hospitallers, for instance!) who were worthed the salt of many other warriors in combat. This meant that there was a distinct advantage in QUALITY over quantity. However with the invention of the gun and xbow you could certainly say that this advantage has been reversed! A single peasant, I am told, could have killed a knight or a samurai with ease!
It is the same thing for EVE. Before it was very important to be high-skilled but now, it is more important to be charismatic. This is because numbers are more important than SP. The equivalent would be world war one where each side threw soldiers and warriors at each other until one side ran out. This is the kind of war we have been waging in eve recently and it shows perfectly how eve has evolved.
My big Q is weather or not the nature of eve will continue to change? Do you think that with the added ships and content of the future we will return to the days of nanoships which are able to swoop down upon enemies and pick them off like a mounted knight on horseback would in a MEDEVIL battlefield?
I think it would be interesting! It might put some fun in the game to be really struggling for our lives again! (our character's lives)

That's a very interesting theory and I for one applaud you for your out-of-the-box thinking and will follow this topic very closely as it is important to me to see what sorts of things other people have to say on this subject as I once took a course in ancient history so I have a keen interest in the views of other people with regards to this type of subject matter and your opinions are all very important as I too see the parallels and I have always wondered if other people did as well and sometimes I lay awake at night thinking to myself how awesome it would be if eve had horses that you could ride around and maybe CCP could introduce mounts to go with station walking so people could have something to ride around on in stations because stations look pretty big and it might get dull if you had to walk everywhere on foot so horses would be pretty nice and it would be cool if you could nano them out.

The very social structure of alliances has changed in EvE, much like your historical analogy. D2, BoB, and the other older alliances used a feudalistic system where as an elite warrior class controlled and fought while the production class worked to support the upper classes. Many new alliances use the citizen solider model where their players are required to do more than just one aspect of game play. Your average goon for instance fights, produces, mines, plays the market, and rats, mostly on just one account. What we see in EvE is a growing middleclass as the t2 market crashed and the introduction of invention, and other new ways to make ISK. This middleclass, represented in alliances such as BRUCE and GOONSWARM are not the big money players of old but can be competitive because they have numbers and drive.

I think with the publicity Eve has been getting lately, the future can be predicted right now. There will be more new players that join, and yes, will have low SP. And at the same time, the low SP players now will become monsters and be flying Cap ships. But you cannot have a spectacular fleet without having those new players there with their tackle gear and such. There will be the same amount of numbers, just more deadly.

While we all look fondly upon the days when we were space-samurai and rode our frigates proudly, I believe those times have past. Combat has changed. Gone are the days of honing your craft. We are now more analogous to those intrepid pioneers of the old West. Riding boldly forth into the belts with nothing but our trusty Raven and cruise launchers, ready to slaughter the indigenous peoples with nary a feeling. Nay, sir! We have evolved, and while we must always remember from where we came, we must never forget our pledge to bring civilization to these mongrels.

Edited by: true enjoyment on 18/12/2007 20:17:14 just to post a FOLLOW-UP to my OP
perhaps CCP could create some sort of hireable NPCs whose loyalty are based on your charisma stat? I also think that training up some sort of speech and other charisma related skills should influence these mercenaries. they would be like drones except you have to pay them (based on your skills and charisma!) and they are just normal ships.
this would bring in a whole new aspect to solo PVP! Im to poor to afford multiple accts so I often have to solo. also, caldari ships can't solo and I am caldari! There are a lot of pilots out there who are in the same position and I think this would greatly benefit them.
Also on the topic of xbows: there should be a chance to do critical damage with your weapons, like doubledamage or more and this skill requires high SP. also, I'd like to see a weapon which has instant-kill which is very high SP to use.
SORRY if this is off topic but I think it's time for a change that's all

The only real thing in eve that changed is the titan nerf this plus the fact that bob beat/displaced a lot of the largest alliances in eve (as you cannot actualy remove ppl from eve) and thereby created a huge block off players that along with the titan nerf has managed to gather enough forces to actualy beat them.
BOB's success was eventualy their downfall and it will be the same for every other uber successful alliance that emerges and defeats enough alliances in eve.

You know its true that we are a lot like pioneers and citizen solders. I have spoken to a lot of capsuleers in my time (A LOT!!! I used to do a lot of cold-calling in empire to find good bargains to save isk!) and what I have noticed in EVE-ONLINE is that many capsuleers are JACKS OF ALL TRADES. this means that they are not specialised and try to branch out and cover all aspects of the game!
This has big implementations, and I am one of these capsuleers. For instance, I am trained in a bit of industry and also I can salvage and research blueprints as well! I am a jack of all trades even though I am focus MAINLY on combat and fighting and pvp/pve (caldari missile spec now xtraining to minmatar (autocannons))
I think that perhaps there should be an incentive to specialise your skills. I think this would lead to a greater intergradedness and maybe instead of flying through local without a word said, I might need to hire someone to salvage my loot for me (for a cut!). This would make EVE a more fun game because really, I wouldn't play EVE if it were EVE-OFFLINE. I play it for the people!

Since we're something like 40000 years in the future I would think that technology would allow us to create something a bit more useful maybe like a horse or possible a giant lizard that we can ride around stations in but it is robotic and it could also change or morph or transform into something else entirely like say we rode our electronic horse to Moe's and when we arrived the bar was already full of brave capsuleers wanting to drink Quafe so there were no extra seats but since we've discovered spaceflight and lasers and stuff our horse could transform into a table and chairs so my gang members and i and some of the random militants i have in Jita 4-4 would have a seat.

is it wrong to post youtube links on these forums?
i'm not going to post the youtube link but there is a video of a mechanical spider some people made on it! you could use that in stations as it is futuristic
if CCP implements in-station walking then will htere be in-station combat too? maybe higher SP players could naturally have more hitpoints or something that would give them an advantage?

That is an excellent idea! You can tie hitpoints directly into skillpoints. Also when you get shot you lose hitpoints/skillpoints.

I don't think many people would fight then Rycar! hehehe!
Can anyone else dream up ways CCP might change the game (or we might change the game, we the players) that might turn the tide?

There should be a 'feign death' like tactic where your ship appears like a wreck on everyone's overview so when they approach it to loot/salvage WHAMMO SURPRISE neutrons to the face.

i wonder if this would be a skill or a module, but i love this idea
maybe if it's a skill then the higher you have it trained up the faster you can bring your systems online (to give people a bit of a chance?)?

I still think quality beats quantity, but only to a certain extent. I dont believe quantity wins because the numbers overwhelm an opponent, i only believe quantity wins because of the physical limits of the current eve server, such as lag and desync.
In a perfect eve world it would be possible to do sniping runs on a larger foe with no lag... drop out of warp immediately line up shoot a target and warp again instantly when enemy support gets on top of you. Also in a perfect eve world with less lag the true meaning of focus fire would come into play, alot of the time in a fleet fight you see people shooting secondary or tertiary targets because they couldnt get a lock on the primary, or simply locking the primary and switching targets would be pointlessly time consuming.
With the development of the supercomputer and a possibility of seriously improved playability, i think quality will once again be able to reign over quantity. I cant be certain, i dont know what will change when it happens, but i can see that making a huge difference in the future of Eve.
Seeing as you're a goon i dont know if this is a serious post or not, but my points still valid.

The characteristic theme of the works of Mercenary Coalition is the rubicon of postpatriarchial truth. If subdeconstructivist nationalism holds, the works of Band of Brothers are empowering. Therefore, the subject is contextualised into a that includes narrativity as a paradox.
The subject is interpolated into a cultural paradigm of context that includes language as a totality. But in the Great EVE War, the RSF reiterates neocultural narrative; in the Mittani's CAOD posts, however, he affirms the cultural paradigm of context.

So maybe a high-slot module similar to a cloak but called "Holographic Evasion System" that when activated would temporarily offline your modules but when deactivated would re-online your modules in 25 seconds but a skill such as "Holographic Evasion" would grant a 20% reduction to the time delay in your modules re-onlining. You would think it would be an electronics skill but I think a pilot would need a good bit of charisma to successfully hide himself. You know like Mal did with Serenity when they were running from the Reavers kinda. So maybe something like charisma/intelligence and rank 6?
