Well, the bottom line is that alts are not being used as the separate characters "to provide a different role-playing experience" as they are intended to be.
They are basically being used by people to do things they wouldn't do with their main characters, cheating the system if you will.
My question is, why not just remove them? Do we really need them? Or better yet, someone provide a good reason why we need them.
Most people that I know who need a second character to actually get anything serious accomplished, just pay for a second account.
Why not remove free alts and give people the ability to add characters to their account for and extra, say $5 US per month? Allow the charcters to be concurrently logged on. That way only people who seriously want another character will get them and it will be cheaper for those who want to have a second one.
As far as I can tell there is no good reason to have ALTS and removing them would solve a lot of problems...

I know of several people, including myself, who have divided training time between all three characters to maxamize different sets of attributes, creating the most efficeint way to train certain skill "sets".
If you remove the alts, they would have to give ALL skill points to one character. This means CCP would need to find out from each account which character the owner wants to keep and become the one.

Whilst alts don't appeal to me, I don't really think that they can be removed from the game at this stage and not even I am going to tell someone to not log in with their alt when they want to sell me something cheap using the trade window rather than jump 100 hops.
On the other hand alts do seriously muck up the game, they spoil the atmosphere and are a key part of 99% of scams, semi-exploits and general griefing tactics. At the very least we should be able to tell if someone is an alt or not.
What I suggest, to retain anonymity for those that wish it, is to display what % of skill points a character is from an account. That doesn't tell you how old that character is, who their other characters are or anything else - just enough so that you can tell if it's an alt and thus receive the appropriate amount of 'respect'.

Not doing will result in all 6 characters being deleted and a healthier credit card statement at the end of the month.
Not that I think it will. But the way things have been going round here lately, you never know.
EDIT : By all means give away of tracking to their associates.(main char). Its easy enough to roleplay the connection for those who it matters to.

I need my alts, mainly because some of the jobs i need to do or specifik tasks i want other players ingame to do for me, without reaveling from where the orders cam.
I use them to spy, wage war, trade, haul stuff, or simply to be able to quickly be other places in the galaxy, when im needed.
If ccp should remove the ability to make alts i want all my other skillpoints, transferred to my main char, and if that happens, i think we need a new superclone, because the highest one we have now would not suffice. So Say I. Einheriar Ulrich of the Bloodline of Einheriar.

Remove Alts???
NOT.... GONNA.... HAPPEN....

Seriously though... There is no freakin' way they will remove alts. My alts each have a purpose whether they are combat, miner/hauler/refiner and pure researcher/builder. Having specialists like that mean that when my combat character is away from home base and someone asks for ???? to be built I can hop onto the builder alt and do it right away.
Another fact you might want to think on is that Ultima Online has 5 chars per account... Eve gets off with 2 less. -------------------------------------------

It isnt going to happen, because the very people who use the alts for this purpose will protest against it.
I would instead like too have a feature that enable an agent to trace the ''associates'' of a char so you can find out who that chars''s alts are, and therefor have a better clue as to who you are dealing with.

Your beating a dead horse with this issue I would just try and get over it and do what your enemy does. If anything should be changed its the ability to train 2 chars on one account at the same time which would give people with only one account some flexability. Removing alts is never going to happen.

LOL you guys are looking at the wrong solution to those problems... everyone in eve just about knows about the ideas and alternatives such as showing the alts that are linked with the account name or just have each char show the other 2 alts... so you couldnt tell which is really main or alt... but you would see the other 2 always including duh the one you are looking at...
so you would look at say mine and then would see my other 2 chars... and if i log on to one of the alts you would then see drutort and the other alt etc...
that is the most down to "eve" solution for alts, the removal of alts is not even any were close to an idea or something that would ever happen, if so it would probably be a first in MMO history and would create way too much bad RP for eve/ccp not to mention losing players/customers support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

Bull Crap... I have one that is a general overall character and my only other alt is trained to level 5 in science skills so that i can have a scientist working on BPs and a general character. If you get rid of alts then you will have people like me that will quit because of stupid requests like this... unless you give me that skill time in my main character of my choosing. I think the best ideas I have heard here are allowing you to train up alts at the same time as your main, and allowing you to see who the other characters on the account are. The second item would drastically reduce the scamming going on.

Alts were the biggest mistake CCP made with this game. There should have been one char at roll-up from the start. Alts have caused more trouble in this game than anything else and continue to be a pain in my ass.
I'd love to see them deleted immediately. Nominate a main, the rest get wiped. But thats not going to happen. What we are left with is a mess.
I look forward to seeing how CCP are going to rectify alt war dec'ers, alt corp theives and alt trolls and griefers.

I use my alts to help me with market trading and hauling, as though they were trade partners. so i place my two alts in neighbouring systems so i can check the market and maybe send them off somewhere to fetch something at a good price.
This means im treating them all as valid characters even if only one of them is training skills.
if i need to take something somewhere dangerous i use an alt because there is less to loose if i have to get a new clone.
So in all im using all tree characters for the same purposes but two of them are 'junior' members of my small corp.
I agree that it is open to scamming and bad use, but not everyone does this and it would effect a lot of peoples gameplay if they were removed.

banning alts for everyone would be a rather blunt approach. how about, when a complaint of griefing is raised against a player, and it is investigated and upheld, then that player's alt slots are disabled. sort of a semi-banning; easier to hand out and only affects the guilty players.

To remove alts now would be totally impossible to administer fairly. Why not just apply penalties for 'misuse' of alts.
Those people using alts to grief/scam generally create an alt specifically for the purpose. I'd make it so that you cannot train ANY character whilst an alt is being deleted, therefore penalising those who regularly create new alts, but having no penalty to those who use alts for 'genuine' purposes.
I'd also consider increasing the time it takes to delete an alt (maybe to 48 hours).

LOL these are exactly all the things you are not supposed to be doing with alts. If you want to play the game in a totally different style and keep the alt separate then fine, but no one does this. Using alts so you donĘt have to travel back to do agent missions or research or not risk your main char!! is NOT what alts are supposed to be used for, and spoils the game.
Add on the fact that alts are the reason there are so many griefers / exploits / scams in this game due to the fact that peeps donĘt have to "risk" there main char. Therefore is no come back, and thus most things can be done risk free.
I have a long list of grievances against alts, not to mention the peeps who have one char for combat, one for mining / corp / one for research.
Sure you can come attack me with your combat alt, disrupt my mining / research whatever but i canĘt attack your mining ops because your alt is in a different corp (i.e. you dont know who is attacking you).
I feel this also probably effects pirates abilities to "pirate" as it were because peeps are willing to just sacrifice alts, instead of have to use there main chars which probably have implants etc...
Alts in principle were a good idea. Allow peeps to play many different aspects of the game etc...
In practice I believe they have turned out to be one of the devs biggest mistakes.
Alts could be removed, just allow all skill points to be re-allocated to one character by the player.
Just my 2 isk's worth:)

This is a hard one. Though I agree alts are often used for really lame stuff I've got a problem with removing them as I actually use my alts and train them acordingly. I've got 3 accounts so have a few mains and quite alot of alts too. I've got alts in newbie corps that i help to teach newbies with and provide cover for newbie miners with. I've got an rp alt that i really enjoy. I've even got a naughty alt that i frigate PvP with. (No not ganknig indi's with a kestrel in yulai thats lame)
If CCP do want to remove them they they'd have to credit me with the training time as I've got millions of skill points invested on my alts. I wouldnt mind if they did this for the greater good of the game but it would limit my game enjoyment a bit not to mention it would be hard choosing which of my chars to send to the biomass recycler.
I recon CCP would be better off fixing the game mechanics that these alts are using to cause problems rather than just removing the ability for multiple chars.

Another fact you might want to think on is that Ultima Online has 5 chars per account... Eve gets off with 2 less.
While this is true not just for UO but Everquest and Earth and Beyond to name a few, it is also true that Final Fantasy Online only gives you one character per account with the option of adding a second for $1 extra per month and that game really isn't hurting.
Look, the thing is the concept of ALTS was created for games where you had to choose your class (warrior, healer, etc) and once you chose your class, you were stuck with it and the abilities it had and could never have for the duration of the character. So the only way to get a new experience was to have a new character.
But in Eve you aren't stuck with anything, everything except your race you can completely change and train any skills you like. The only value an alt can have is if you want to have a different RP experience.
Now I didn't say we SHOULD remove alts, I simply asked why we shouldn't. I guess I was just more or less asking if anyone used their alts for the RP reason they were created. The answer seems to be, just from the responses I got, not really.
It's very nice that you might have an alt in X system to do this work while the main can be in Y system doing something else but honestly I think that is still crap. The problem being that alts aren't acting as the completely separate people they really are.
What I have just read is how people use alts as if all their chars shared a brain. Esentially, making one super character who can be in more than one place at a time, specialize 3 different ways(which kinda negates the idea of specializing), and do business in separate markets only to bring it all together for whatever purpose the player sees fit. Unless you have the evemails between characters and the chatlogs to show some reason why all these unrelated characters started working with/for eachother, it doesn't make a bit of sense. Just circumventing the system a bit for personal gain because you can. What can I say, it is worse than bad RP.
But aside from being bad RP because that can never be solved, my question still is would anyone REALLY cry if alts were removed? I didn't ask whether it would happen, I know quite well it probably never would. But suppose it did, would that be bad? Suppose they offered to migrate skill points to your main. Or suppose they just halted the creation of new alts?
I realize this might be a blunt-force answer to a problem but the thing is that all the solutions I have read about showing people info about alts or skill points or whatever totally break the metaphor that these are characters in a fictional world. No one should have any info about the "player" just the character. Showing any type of relation to a character's alt implies a connection that technically does not exist.

Edited by: Karol Kei on 17/03/2004 16:17:32 Edited by: Karol Kei on 17/03/2004 16:16:21 I can't see how deleting all alts just like that would ever come to pass. Not in this reality.
However, there is another slower and more gentle way. Disable making more alts at DT tomorrow. That would give the people that are using their alts for legit purposes and have invested training time in them a fair chance to keep doing so.
It would also slowly but surely start improving things as far as all the problems are concerned. Alts would no longer be free-for-all tools, but those that had some made would value them. And those that use them to cheat, would only have so many alts to use for scams, etc, instead of the endless supply that they are enjoying right now.

Its just unfortunate people abuse it and use alts to act tough on the forum. Just caus they cant bear the thought that someone may dissagree with them and they loose face. Or they wish to flame one of the powerful characters in the game and dont wish to find themselves KOS. LAME

I'm playing both my alts. To a certain degree I use them for stuff I wouldn't do with my main. But I certainly do role-play them.
My main character is an extreme combat pilot. Specialized only for fighting while flying 2 race's battleships. He's fighting with the best and against the best pilots in the game, in the biggest battles the world has seen, and is well-known for that.
My 2:nd character is also a fighter. Flying frigates and cruisers. Rogue, and "at the dark side" and takes the opportunity if a lone hauler passes by, while also instantly heading in to attack if a known pirate is in the system. Also a bit crazy, and doesn't hesitate to attack a battleship alone, and has even attacked groups of cruisers and/or battleships alone.
My 3:rd character is a peaceful "nobody", who can fly cruisers/frigates/industrials, but seldom using a cruiser. Usually doing some mining, or maybe some agent missions etc in the central systems of the universe. And in the meantime I help lots of new players that starts out in that newbie corp, answering all their questions and giving them advice etc...
So: NO, you can't remove alts. I use them the way they were intended to. I could go along with some system of showing "who the alt belongs to", but don't touch my alts
Generally, my 2:nd character loose money and my third character makes money. They kinda make it even. As for connection with my main, I only use them to sometimes check prices and buy stuff since it takes a loooong time to travel to empire with my main. I kinda "only" play my 2:nd character while I'm too drunk to play with my main. That explains "the crazy part" and why I loose money with that one... My 3:rd is often played while I'm semi afk, or for example doing some work in matlab, ie when I can't pay the full attention to the game that's needed to play with my main.

That's a perfect example of what alts are for dalman! I have a similar setup with my alts. I even have a story about how they know eachother and the evemail correspondence between them to flesh out why they do the things they do.
But my question is, are we in the minority? If we are, then the question becomes would we rather keep our alts or have a world where people aren't getting the shaft from expendable alts all day long and people actually have to take responsibility for their actions.
Personally, I have to side with EveJunkie and say I would rather not have them because I think having them does more harm than good, unfortunately.

Alts file stuck petitions. Not as big a problem anymore but used to be and might be again. Also, I really love the avatar creation system of eve. I make characters and delete them just to make more avatars. I take ones that I like and use them as backgrounds on my computer. (Is that weird? )
BTW...Sassinak. I really like your sig.

Each of my characters has different roles within different corporations.
CCP can't do such a drastic change as to remove them when we are nearly a year into release.

I have a second account - why? because I want an alternative character (alt) whom I can train at the same time as my main - she is a researcher and a bit of a babe .
It would have been great if we had the option to pay to add a character to an account that can simultaneously train (now that, I would glady pay for!) - would stop a lot of the "misuse of alts" by charging people (reasonably) for their creation. After all, who is going to pay to create an alt to grief for a bit before cancelling them and starting another? - well some might but not as many as currently do! It would certainly have benefitted those who actually want an alternative character to play with and develop.
I agree with the comments that its too late in the day to scrap alts and that alts have a place in the game. Sadly, I think its a case of too late to change.

Quote: Ridiculous. If you remove alts how will people spy, scam, scout, make bookmarks for fighting or post on the forums without getting flamed?
You've clearly not thought this one through have you?
Bah...I agree.

My alts all do the same thing - R&D. All three characters are performing research right now, and I would demand significant compensation were I limited to just one research track at a time.
I have paid a price for this. I have had to spend significant time training all 3 characters for research. I have had to spend significant time earning sufficient ISK to get ships and equipment for all 3 characters. If I lose the alts, I want that price returned to me in the form of consolidated skill points, ISK, inventory, and research points.

I need my alts, they play a big part in my game and in my enjoyment. I have taken away alot of skill points from my main because of the training of my alts. I have 6.5mil and another member who started the same time as I has almost 8mil.
Please dont remove my alts I have alot of time invested.
Thanks EvilDoomer
