Hmm,
1: Could be a bad Fraps file. 2: A large project causing too much strain on Vegas. 3: Something else.
If it's 1, then it'll be a case of opening up the project and using the loop region selector, highlighting a Fraps file in the timeline and hitting shift+M. This will open up your selective pre-render option. Choose the 'uncompressed' template, exclude the audio, and click start. This'll pre-render the file and if there are any issues with it, it'll tell you it's failed and why etc.
If it's 2, then you'll have to do partial render, similar to the above, but for larger chunks, say, 5-10 minutes a piece in an uncompressed AVI export. Once you have them all rendered - you should theoretically be able to import them all into a new project and render out the whole thing in one go. This is unfortunately the way it is sometimes when doing final renders, and Sony Vegas, just like Premiere Pro etc will just stumble over large projects. Maybe because there are too many frames, maybe there are too many files to handle - take your pick as to why it happens. Basically, the more complex, the more that can go wrong.
If it's 3, then you got problems which could be more fundamental to your Computer, such as that Sony Vegas itself is bugged/corrupt/infected, or you have codec issues in the Windows directory. It literally could be anything.
Try 1 and 2 first, see how it goes.

Thank you for all the information.
Do you know if I can use Ulead Video Studio to make Eve videos? I've had it for a couple of years and am somewhat familiar with it. Save me from having to purchase and learn new software.
Thank you.

I have not used the software myself, but did take a look at their website and it does seem as if it would work fine.
So long as an application will allow you to edit to the same resolution as your fraps and export it, then job done - and Ulead looks like it supports HD-1080 AVI files.

I just downloaded windows media encoder 9 from the link in your video and installed it, I'm probably just blind but I can't find the profile editor on all programs or anywhere else and I don't know where else to look.
What stupidly obvious way of opening it am I missing?

I had an issue where I used motion blur. Instead of making a smooth transition between scenes with and without motion blur I made it instant snap to zero motion blur and from zero back. Making the transition go smoothly fixed it. --- The Universal Migrator Advert |

AK,these tutorials are so much simpler to understand than the official software tutorials, you've given me faith in Prem Pro again \o/.
So many basic little steps I was overlooking that really make a huge difference to the final cut.Excellent job mate. |

Many thanks Murk,
Prem Pro and Vegas are complex, but to edit an EVE film in them, it's not essential to know the whole sheebang - which is one of the reasons I did these tutorials, to show it's not as hard as anyone might think and to eleviate any potential head-banging.
Look forward to watching your work - and hopefully I will be doing some more tutorials soon.

For an uncompressed AVI file, choose the top one 'default template (uncompressed)'. That's if you want to use another application to compress it into a container like MKV or DivX etc. If you want to output an WMV then review the first part of the tutorial for a guide, do some ten second runs, test the quality, if it looks good - encode the whole thing with whichever settings you choose.

You'll need the CCCP (codec pack) or VLC (standalone player) in order to play these video tutorials. Also note you need a fast computer to play it back without stuttering. If your computer is too slow to play the videos at full speed, download this codec pack and install *only* the included CoreAVC. If you have the CCCP or FFDshow already installed, disable H.264 decoding in its video codec settings to activate CoreAVC. Note that VLC does not support CoreAVC.

cheers for that, i got the tutorial working :-)
i have fraps installed and have grabbed some images for what i want to use.... next will be looking at the windows movie maker... i have noticed that when i watch the fraps images with real player the yellow numbers aren't there and when i watch it thru windows movie maker they are there....
is that supposed to happen?

Typically, if you have Fraps open, it will display the yellow markers in any editing program. If you are seeing the yellow markers, even if Fraps is closed, that's a new issue I've not encountered.
Try doing a small encode from WMM and see if the yellow markers have been included in the encode or not.

I'm glad that worked because i haven't got a clue what this means: Quote: Try doing a small encode from WMM and see if the yellow markers have been included in the encode or not.

Apologies,
I meant exporting a short/small Fraps file which has been imported into WMM, very much like the example I demonstrated in the encoding tutorial, but really as a test to see if the yellow markers would be in the final file.

well so far so good.
i watched several tutorials and have enjoyed them (would like to see how to cut and splice film clips in windows media player but i get the general idea so far.
the update patch that you mention for the encoding might be an issue for me as i may not have a genuine edition of windows xp. so i have started to look for abode premier pro 7 and hope to download it on the cheap/or for free :-D
i will download for tutorials once i have sorted out the eve client update patch fiasco that always happens with my old computer.

I'd take a look at the trial downloads first for Premiere Pro CS4, available here I think they still do 30 day trial. Failing that, try obtaining a trial version of CS2 or CS3 - any further back than that and it starts to get less supported and less compatible with modern systems.
Don't forget Sony Vegas, they have a 30 day trial here and will make less of a demand on your system resources, plus some people find the interface is much easier than Adobe's.

The Janks got Adobe Master CS4 this weekend for * cough * business use, and decided to check out Adobe Premiere. It was very, very, overwhelming at first, for his pea sized brain. However your guides made it quite easy, and Janks may have finally got all he needs to take a crack at making movies of his stupidities in spaaaaace.

Hi Phantom,
Probably best to drop me a line via my youtube site Here. I'm basically on the road too much at the moment and this is really the fastest way to get hold of me.
Oh, you will also get kudos for correctly identifying the location of the background image. Everything else on that site is work in progress, which it needs.

Wow, thanks a lot. I started playing recently and the more I look around the more things I see that attract me to this game, including people willing to help eachother (while probably bashing their skulls in ingame).
I hum "chose" Sony Vegas and am joking around with it, do you have any good MP4/MKV encoders you could recommend (or a plugin for Vegas)? I have Vista 64 and the autoencoder from the other thread doesn't work for me.

Sadly, the autoencoder does not work under certain circumstances and the Player who developed the scripts for it, is no longer an active player and it is not supported.
This is one of the reasons why I have not put together a tutorial for MKV/H.264/x264 files. The other reason is that it is still a container [MKV] and codec [264] under development by open source and bespoke people/organisations/groups, and as a result it is hard to provide something for the community of EVE which could be described as 'established'. I do recommend the Autoencoder, as I have found it to be one of the few 'click and go' solutions out there and something which has been developed specifically for the EVE Video-making community.
If anyone wishes to try and contact Dark Shikari OOG, and enquire whether he would consider re-engaging in the development of this type of tool, by all means do so.
In the meanwhile, there are many very good tools out there for MKV, and on a personal note have found Staxrip to be very user friendly with many options. You can find it here and judging by the website, it had a recent upgrade this month - so should be compatible with Vista.

Edited by: Marko Riva on 28/04/2009 18:00:25 Tried that but found that it requires several other programs to be installed, so I'm working on that. In the mean time I found this (rather obvious looking at the URL) no idea how good it is cause it didn't really work for me, but that could be a codec issue.
I managed to make my first movie with your tutorial, and while i understand it's utter rubbish I'm proud of it
Thanks again.

first i wanted to say thanks very much for your tutorials! There are hundreds of prem/ae tutorials out there but only yours are eve-related and thats what makes them sexy
would appreciate more camera work tutorials if you've got time.
i hope it is not agains the rules to ask for a review/feedback. I basically started from scratch and worked my way up with dozens of tutorials, incl. yours ofcourse and made a pvp/effects (while fighting with the fleet) movie. I would like to ask you to comment :) http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1060824 |

Same here, i have made several mkv's with various programs but i can't quite get the result to my liking. It would be cool if we could have someone, with mkv experience to make a little tut. :)
