Edited by: Ix Forres on 01/01/2008 00:34:10 Dear 2Kay,
Where do you see your relationship with the API project?
I ask this as a curiosity towards the future of the EVE API. Garthagk certainly made a huge impression on the developer community with his transparency about what he was doing with the API, and involvement with the developers at a personal level, getting involved in how people were making use of the API and building on what he saw being done in the real world for new features. And it has certainly resulted in a great system, but it's not perfect, and there's still a lot that could be done.
While I understand that the API is not your only project, neither was it Garthagk's. Yet since your introduction as the new API developer we, the developer community, have seen very little to no involvement or discussion from you, or any changes to the API. Apart from being quite worrying (Will the API be maintained in future?) the development of the API has become rather static in our eyes.
This (open) letter is a request that we get back the level of transparency and communication that Garthagk provided to the developer community- change logs, notifications of what you're working on next, discussion of what should come next and what people would like to see in IRC channels and on the EVE-Dev wiki. These small and simple tasks could bring huge benefits to the community and to the EVE API. We're a friendly bunch- I can't think of a single EVE developer I know who I'd criticise on a personal level- and the discussions in #eve-dev are always level-headed and enjoyable.
I think the biggest impression that Garthagk has made on my mind is that he's still in #eve-dev, still discussing his projects with us- there's a real relationship built up between him and the community devs, and that same relationship drove the development in a very strong way and lead to a great product.
Consider this, if you will, an invitation to the party. Join us in #eve-dev, sign up to the EVE-Dev website and wiki and keep an eye on it- perhaps even contribute. Listen to what people are doing with the API, what they need and want for the future, and perhaps even take the API on as more of a personal project than an assigned task to bugfix. It's an area where even very small changes and improvements can change the day to day lives of thousands of players.
For the sake of not only the community developers using the API, but for the players using API-derived projects, systems and applications, I beseech you to come and hang out with the other devs- those who are working for weeks, months, and even years on projects using what is rapidly looking like a stagnant API, the future direction of which is unknown.
Yours Faithfully, - Ix Forres

The API is too important to let languish. There is a whole exciting new class of applications being developed now which were impossible before APIv2, and these are a direct result of Garthagk's enthusiasm and work. We want this to continue!

2Kay, anything you say can and will be googled by your future employer. If you're going to make a statement better make it short and understandable like 'carrier != hauler' so that everyone in this forum comprehends it.

Well we have already been told that the API will not be developed further atm.
From what I understand 2kay will just be fixing any bugs that come up with it, nothing more. I could well be wrong though.

would love to see the forward momentum continue. There are some pretty exciting applications being developed, and it'd be sad to see the API stagnate.

i agree. i fully respect the fact if someone is in holidays and/or has other things to manage. I respect structural changes in personell management as well. But, from my point of view, support for the community shouldn't suffer because of that. I mean if there are changes, then please let us at least know what kind of changes we have to expect. :)
