I just switched out my GeForce 7600GS 512 for a ATI x1950 PRO 512. Got a some improvement out of it, but I'd honestly love to be back with a nvidia card. Runs eve great, but I've been waiting to see what new stuff is coming out this month and next before I actually buy anything (x1950 was from a friend ).
I gotta say just go with an 8 series nvidia if you are going to stay with nvidia though.

If you are stuck with AGP the 7600GS is pretty good. I got the PNY 512MB version for about $110.

If one is cheap and doesn't want to shell out for a 8800 series card, how would a 8600 series card perform for Eve? -- Gradient forum |

I have a 512MB 8600GT with an AMD X2 50000+ and 2GB ram running Vista. It plays EVE with premium graphics (2xAA, HDR off and shadows off) somewhere around 50fps on 1440x900. Smooth gaming experience this way. I bought this card for EUR 99,-
On my laptop (Intel T7250, 2GB, 128MB ATI x1350 running Vista) I play with classic graphics on 1440x900. Premium is too much for the graphics card.

Edited by: Beven on 03/01/2008 12:54:11 I have a 5000+ dual core, 2 gig ddr2 800 ram and gForce 8600GT 256meg.
I also run Eve on Linux, Fedora 8. I haven't had any problems so far and it looks and runs great. And I run the Premium edition of EVE.

Edited by: Rimac on 04/01/2008 10:02:49 Definitely get NVIDIA, not ATI. ATI hardware is pretty good but ATI drivers are crap. There are custom-built drivers out there that are an improvement but they still give problems. And while it is true that some people do not experience any problems, that is more due to luck and a coincidental good driver combination than any success on the part of ATI.
/start rant
I've had to fix so many driver problems for ATI cards (not just for me but pretty much everyone I know who got an ATI) that it's just not funny anymore. You get it to work for two or three games and then the next game has an issue that makes you adjust settings manually, switch driver versions/types/whatever. And it often costs lots of time to figure out what's wrong now... This in contrast with the NVidia drivers which, in general, you just install and everything works fine.
I've bought three ATI cards over the past 3 years and each time it was the same crap. And no it wasn't the hardware, on the last one my supplier exchanged the hardware and tried it himself. Still the same troubles. I didn't even bother trying to sell that last card (worth 200$), I simply threw it in the trash because I didn't want to put anyone through that misery.
In short, if you constantly want to fiddle around and tweak stuff and frustrate yourself to death, get ATI. If you just want something that works, get NVidia.

Edited by: Antiquus Altercor on 04/01/2008 11:02:22 If you clean all your graphics drivers before you switch cards, ATI is fine. If you install one or the other card drivers over top of each other, you may have problems. Not surprisingly, neither company checks that their drivers interfere with the other company's. I've used both company's cards for years, and ATI is fine.
What's NOT fine is to buy an expensive card with a one-year warranty and have it crap out after 15 months. People are not upgrading video as quickly as they once were due to expense and gaming companies, including CCP, know better than to put a game out that has huge video requirements - too many potential customers just can't run the game then. CCP's decision to have 2 graphics engines supported is unique, I've never seen another company do that.
Of the ATI card vendors, only Asus and Gigabyte have a 3 year warranty. For Nvidia cards XFX, BFG, Evga have lifetime warranties, and Asus, Gigabyte have the same 3 year warranties. 3 years is plenty for a graphics card, however you may hand your card down to other people as I do and want the card covered. Companies who offer good warranties build better products because it costs them not to, it's that simple. But to buy a card with a good warranty, I expect to pay a little more.
I've been running a 8600GT for 8 months as a stopgap, because I knew graphics cards would get very interesting right about now. It struggles when I dual screen, but keeps up OK with medium high settings on the new Eve engine.
The new ATI 3850/3870 is a very solid card, and runs cool and quiet. I built a workstation using a new (G92 - that's the one you want) 8800GTS 512mb XFX card, and graphics just rock, but the constant low whine bothers me. And man that card is warm. But man does it haul butt.
Frankly I'm waiting until the 3870 X2 - crossfire-on-one-card shows up at the end of this month. Then I'll decide.

Funny thing is, the games I play and on this computer... the ATI Radeon 9000(64mb) out does the Nvidia GeForce 6600 (128mb) I seem to get nothing but graphics foul ups and problems with the Nvidia. The only thing the Radeon won't run is the Trinity graphics, I'm stuck with classic but I don't care, I can still get my Eve-o fix so all is good.
My short experience with Nvidia was a disappointment to be sure.
Granted I got a custom driver for the Radeon installed, not the boxed one.
