Caliber Moon	Posted - 2008.01.02 08:55:00 - [1] The new High-Res patch has been out for a few weeks now, however I do not meet the minimum requirements. I am ready to upgrade. Basically, I don't have enough memory, and my ancient GeForce FX5200 128M sucks. I have already ordered the memory from tigerdirect, but I'm still not sure what to buy when it comes to a video card. The age old question returns, ATI or Nvidia. I am unbiased as I have had success with both. Either way, I'm going to have to spend a few hundred bucks. I guess I'm just looking for some opinions from people who play EVE. And how well their card works for them. I'm not looking for a cheap card, but not top-of-the-line either. Thanks, CM

Perhaps his problems might be a hardware conflict, I donno. I still get nervous when I'm about to spend a few hundred bucks; as I have had a few graphics cards fail on me in the past. BUT I have also had a XFX 7950GT (the passive cooled thing with a HUGE heatpipe) and that one did fail miserably, so if that is the same 7950 Garia is talking about, he might very well be correct. The 8800GT is working beautifully though and combined with my Core2Duo E6600, 2GB ram i have 90-100FPS pretty much no matter what's on the grid with Bloom: High, Shadows: High and Buffer(Chache?): Extreme It also runs WOW (Yes... I shamefully admit to playing it now and then) at 120-150FPS with everything maxed, aswell as Entropia, Overlord etc etc etc without so much as a hitch. ---

Posted - 2008.01.02 09:43:00 - [10] 200FPS in station w/ max settings: 6000+ dual core 2gb Kingston DDR2 800 Gigabyte nVidia 8800GT ASUS M2N32 SLi Deluxe Relatively cheapish if you're looking for an upgrade. ATi while not as fast or high performance as nVidia is scaled accordingly in pricing, lets say they underperform by 13%, they're 13% cheaper (8800GT vs 3870 512mb). It's fanboism atm.

CM If you're spending money, spend it with the future in mind, go that little bit further for something mid/high range, but rock solid that'll last a long while!

I've just placed an order with Amazon.co.uk for an 8800GT with 512MB of RAM and slight factory overclock. ú120 including VAT and postage. Shelling out a couple hundred dollars for a AGP card would be rather counterproductive anyways as you'll pretty soon have to change mobos etc anyways to get any further. Also, be sure your powersupply can support the thing, as new GFX cards hog a lot of power and are likely to fail if they don't get enough due to overheating. From where I stand I'd just change everything (provided you have the funds), mobo, cpu, ram, GFX and PSU, something that should be easily doable without spending a fortune unless you want to go all out and get top of the line stuff. ---

I know I'd be wasting money on a card:( Sheesh, I do get impatient big time tho. But everyone is right, its just alot more money than I care to spend. This is supposed to be better now, but I'd still go for NVIDIA as their drivers just work. -- Do you need research services for your blueprints? We have available slots in Metropolis region. I just bought an Nvida 7300 gt 512 of memory on it Very happy with this choice I now have the eye candy turned on works well with most games.

I switched from AGP ATI card to an AGP Nvidia card and it caused major problems even after using driversweeper. Had to return the card and buy a newer ATI. It was cheap and it runs EVE and Bioshock very nicely with AA/AF turned on. Great card. Also, AGP is ancient. Upgrade your mobo, you bloody luddite. I've been using Linux for over a decade; it's just useless and pointless for gaming these days. That being said- yes if Linux gaming is important you will want nvidia.
