Notes on travel:
- Never use auto pilot (Its been said but can be stressed enough)
- Frigs and cruisers sitting on gates may have passive targeters and cargo scanners, be aware
- Never use ECM bursts, they will get you killed
- Know where you are and where you are going. Know the short routes between major hubs such as Jita and Hek or Ammar and Rens and expect trouble along them.
- Fit for speed. In low sec you may encounter a Heavy Interdictor or enough Interceptors to beat your 6 warp stabs. In a bubble it is always best to burn for the gate rather than try and make it to the edge, but you still need to be fast.
- Make bookmarks 200+km above or below gates you commonly travel through in low sec and 0.0. In the event that a gate is bubbled you can still warp to your bookmark, not get pulled into the bubble and then warp to the gate. Do this especially for lowsec-0.0 crossings.
- When in a blockade runner know that your warp strength role bonus is useless. Don't bother fitting more warp stabs. Don't fit for speed either, fit for agility (inertial stabs).
- Blockade runner insta warp trick. Fit a cloak and a 10mn MWD. When you encounter a gatecamp (Not a bubble!) do the following in rapid sucession: Align to the gate you want to warp to (double click just below it in space) Activate your MWD Cloak In 10 seconds your MWD will turn off, decloak and hit warp. You will already be at speed and warp before anything can lock you.
- Transporting Blueprints in a shuttle or frig may seem like a good idea but its not. Look at the wreckage in space after any gatecamp and you will see that the most common ships down are the small guys
- If you find your self at a gatecamp that you know you cant escape do nothing. If you are lucky some other poor sucker will decloak first or jump in and try to warp off distracting the pirates giving you a window to escape. (Note that this is only good for the 30 seconds that you remain cloaked)
- Statistics on your star color tab in map settings is your friend, spend some time to get to know him.
Notes on Information
- EvE is metagaming. Know this, understand this, cherish this.
- Do not be afraid to ask questions on the forums, in channels, to pilots. There is a vast wealth of information out there, but be wary of what you learn, many people are just as ignorant as you but wont admit it.
- If you use the forums take some time to get to know who the "regulars" are. Many through and important guides have been written by them and when they answer a question it is the one you want to pay attention to. Check peoples sigs for links to guides and programs.
- EvE forums have terrible information cataloging. Stickies are not updated and the search function is worse than useless. EvE Search Archives the forums and has better search functionality. EvE Files Its where people put things Battleclinic A good place to first start finding 3rd party resources EvE Central A powerful market tool, please contribute. SHC A second forum. If you do anything remotely political or have any interest in that stuff this is where you escape the pit of CAOD. It also has very good ship discussions. - Spread sheets and 3rd party programs are your friends. There are a wealth of things out there that will make every aspect of EvE simpler and easier to comprehend, find them.
There is more but I am out of space.

If your overview gets messed up, i.e. a ship is displayed with the wrong icon, or a non-existent ship sticks around, then click once in space, then hit the tab key twice.
This shades all your windows and then restores them, which usually fixes the overview display bug. --

If someone opens a trade window and offers to sell you a 'raven navy issue', right click on it and see if it says 'view market details'. If it's a real one, that wont be there, you cant sell them on the market. You'll see the option for 'view market details' if it's a plain raven, renamed to look like a navy raven.

Why? You can instajump if you use the warp-to-zero function. The chances of getting killed are actually greater if you warp to any other range, in lowsec anyway.
Also in 0.0 they can put a bubble near a gate, not on it, and drag you into their bubble kill zone, away from the gate. 100km is not far enough away to avoid the pull of the bubble.
In 0.0 systems with only two gates, they sometimes put bubbles along the line between the gates to pull you *out of warp*. Always try to jump indirectly via planets or other safespots if you can to avoid obvious lines of approach.
Warp to 70 or some other distance than 100 when in a covert ops. Surprising how many times an object can be found at 100km along a common warp line to stations and gates.

In general, people who use "always", and "never" haven't learned to think outside the box.
Check your insurance before undocking.
It is sometimes more fun playing eve with a gang then by yourself, so join a corp ...
... and sometimes its not... so go rat/mission/explore/pvp/mine by yourself sometimes.
A fully trained/equiped covert ops pilot can probe you out in about 20 secs.
Warping to a buddy going 7.5k makes it really hard for covert ops pilots to get you.
If your in a dictor, and can get ahead of the gang running away from your gang, bubble the gate at 100km.

This thread is supposed to be for advanced tips. I got a little carried away and listed novice tips I tend not to see elsewhere.
* Market - When viewing items under the Browse tab on the left, prices shown in the Groups tab on the right are likely _not_ the "best price in the region" as it says. Either click on the specific item under the Browse tab or use the Search tab and click on the specific item there. This will show you the prices under Details tab on the right which may be sorted by price.
* Chat Windows - Select 'show text only' in the top right of chat windows. - Right click in a black area of chat and select toggle timestamp to turn it on. - Use ctrl-uparrow to repeat your statements from the chat cache.
* Capcitor - Your capacitor recharge rate is not constant. The rate of recharge is greatest when the capacitor is 20-25% full. It is very slow when nearly empty or worse at 0% and slowest of all when it is nearly full.
* Mining - While mining the message that says ore is "...jettisoned into space, unrecoverable" because your cargo bay is full is wrong. The ore amount normally mined by the mining laser is simply not subtracted from the asteroid. - Ore mined by a mining drone remains on the asteroid until the drone has completed its return to the ship.
* Tactical Overlay - It often helps to play with this on and with a zoomed out view. It is one of the buttons on the left side of your HUD.
* Aligning - To make aligning easier zoom out (scroll button) your view some so your ship appears at least somewhat small. Locate the object you wish to align to or observe your friend's ship fly off into the backround and rotate your camera angle until that object/spot appears somewhere in the background free of clutter. Double left click close to the object or on the spot and repeat until your ship begins to accelerate. Keep in mind you do not need to center the distant object/spot in the middle of the screen while you are doing this. Once your ship is up to 75% top speed initating warp to that object will instantly take you into warp. Useful when you might need to enter warp quickly. - The slower your ship is moving when it attempts to align the faster it will align.
* Stopping fast - Use ctrl-space to tell your ship to stop then tell your ship to move opposite to the direction it is moving. The velocity will drop much faster. Hit ctrl-space again when the velocity is near zero.
* Misclick from lag - Often players click 1 item below what they intend to click on while using EVE right click menus. This is because the selection highlighter lags behind the mouse pointer and does not stay directly under it when video lag is involved. As a player moves the pointer down the list they do so until the highlight lands on their desired selection which is often when the pointer is one selection below it. Ignore the highlight and pay attention to your pointer. You can also speed up the opening of submenus with a left click instead of waiting for it to open by hovering the pointer.
* Energy weapon crystals - Beam and Pulse weapons use frequency crystals currently do not stack in the ship cargo bay when swapped out/unloaded from your weapons. In order to assure that they load properly when swapped back in you must first open your ship cargo bay and stack them with the 'stack all' command. Otherwise lag may prevent one or more crystals from loading properly which will require an extra step of right clicking the module that failed to load and clicking reload. == Support fixing the EVE UI |

Edited by: Cyxopyc on 28/02/2008 23:44:45 * Client freeze in battle - EVE normally automatically warps your ship away if the client loses connection from the server. If your computer or EVE client locks up the server still detects an active connection and won't attempt to get your ship out of danger. Don't sit watching the screen assuming it's lag. If your locked up you need to reboot or turn off your computer fast. This should give you a chance of saving your ship. (Warping fleets into some missions may create long load times)
* Trading in station - As players dock the guests list shifts. If you are right clicking to start a trade you may find out too late you're not trading with who want. Verify the name on the trade window.
* PVP high/low secure space - This is very complicated with many intended and untended exceptions and also unknowns (at least for me). This is what I know or am pretty sure about. 0.0 PvP and wars are not considered here and are easier to describe. - The only time you are completely safe is while docked in a station regardless of what ship you are in. A battleship with high value modules/cargo could be a target in high security space.
- Ships that have you as a locked target show a yellow flashing square around their ship symbol in space and in the overview. Locking target is _not_ an attack.
- Ships attacking you show a red flashing square around their ship symbol in space and in the overview. Smartbombs and ECM Burst modules do not require a locked target to hit nearby objects.
- A flashing red player in your overview (the entire overview row flashes) indicates you may attack that player without Concord security status loss or Concord punishing you with ship destruction. This does _not_ mean you are currently flashing red to them or that they are currently attacking you.
- Stealing another player's items from a yellow cargo container or yellow wreck makes the thief flash red to the owner and the owner's corp. By default a warning window will appear when you are about to steal. Concord does not consider stealing a strong act of aggression that they need to act on. There is no Security Status loss for stealing.
- For purposes of aggression flagging newbie NPC starter corps and NPC corps players end up in when they leave a player corp are different than regular player corps. Essentially you are a single player corp. An offense against you is an offense against only you and no one else.
- When performing illegal aggression toward another you receive a 15 minute Aggression Countdown flag, mouse over it to see who you are flashing red to. If they attack you before the countdown expires the timer is reset to 15 minutes.
- Concord Security Status also known as "Security Status" loss will occur when you illegally attack a ship (-0.5%), destroy that ship (-2.0%), attack the pod (no change), and destroy the pod (-12.5%). Currently attacking a ship gives conflicting information (-1.0%) in your combat log but (-0.5%) under Character Sheet, Security Status.
- Using aggressive modules (turrets, launchers, smartbombs, web, warp scramble, nos, dampen, ECM, etc...) on objects owned by another such as abandoned ships, drones, (yellow) wrecks, (yellow) cargo containers and structures like those found in missions are treated as attacks on a player by Concord. Note that in all cases except _smartbombs_ and _ECM_burst_modules_ you receive a warning window by default asking if you wish to proceed with your attack. == Support fixing the EVE UI |

- If a player(s) illegally attacks and destroys your ship without you attacking back you receive "Kill Rights" under Character sheet, 2nd from bottom. You have 30 days to avenge yourself by destroying one of their ships without penalty from Concord. All parties involved receive either 'CAN KILL' or 'CAN BE KILLED BY' notifications under Kill Rights. There is no flag, flashing or coloring in the overview to indicate Kill Rights if the involved parties get in view of each other. kill Rights are currently bugged a bit - Kill Rights bug.
- If you're concerned a stranger joining your fleet may be at war here's how to check their corp for war decs. Corporation button, Wars tab, Other Wars tab, Select button, search for their corporation name and click once on it, click OK.
- Salvaging yellow wrecks is not breaking any Empire law and won't make you flash red. That doesn't mean the owner of the wrecks won't be mad.
* Warp Disruptor Bubbles
From what I understand the following is true for all Warp Disruptor Bubbles. 1) If you are inside the bubble you cannot initiate warp. 2) Your ship ends up somewhere inside the bubble if the exit of your warp tunnel is within a certain range of the bubble _and_ a line exactly overlaying your warp path intersects the bubbles surface.
Key: objects or bookmarks in order 'a' 'b' 'c', bubble 'o',
These two setups will capture ships warping from stargate 'a' to stargate 'b'. The bubble is as close to 'b' as possible. a b0
a ob
This setup will not capture a ship warping from stargate 'a' to stargate 'b'. a o b

* Log I'm used to viewing the damage that I do and the damage received as it occurs in MMOGs. Ideally you know your optimal range and transversal velocity needed to hit your target type the most often and for the most damage and don't need to see any feedback, I'm not the ideal player.
EVE's damage reports are displayed in two ways. One way is the rectangle that appears during battle in the top middle of the screen. This does not display every message but rather just one of the many received messages every few seconds. After you are beyond the first missions in a rookie frigate it never displays everything during combat.
The second way is the Log window. It is found under Accessories at the bottom of the NeoCom. Make a shortcut to open the Log (I use ctrl-L). In the left most column clicking on the header "Time" alternates scrolling between up and down. Set the white triangle next to the word "Time" pointing up and move the scroll bar on the right edge all the way up. I also adjust the size of the log window so at least one complete round of attacks is visible then slide it partly off the screen to the left and click the 'pin' button to make it transparent. For some time the log window found me pulling what little hair I have left out however this setup with the text scrolling down has been the most trouble free. Also uncheck "Show incurred hit notifications" under (ESC > General Settings > Inflight) to reduce spam effect in this window.
There's also a glitch that occasionally stops output to this window. I don't know what causes it but clicking on "Time" restores output.
