As an experienced player, what are some of your more advanced tactics and pointers that would be very helpful, or save a newbie millions?
Anything that's basically undocumented, and exists almost exclusively in the heads of experienced players. Anything that seems obvious to a even semi-experienced pilot may not be to the average newbie. In the spirit of retaining players in the face of the harsh consequences of EVE, post yours.
Here are a few to get started: Lone ships in lowsec and 0.0 should be approached with caution. It might be bait.Lone ships in lowsec pipelines with no station in system are bait.An undocked command ship talking smack to an undocked capital pilot in local is always bait.sume all lowsec gateways into 0.0 always have a bubblecamp on the other side.Use a scout.Can stealing for a CONCORD free fight may result in you fighting a bigger ship than you intended. Or more ships. Or both.Joining a gang with a player in a player corporation to run a mission is suicidal.Hauling expensive (20M+ ISK) in a tech 1 hauler even in highsec, is folly. Use a transport or a combat ship.Never fly a ship you cannot afford to lose. Better yet, only fly things you consider disposable.Bring ewar.Gallente drones are almost always better.Using a smartbomb in highsec is very risky, even it if it looks clear, you might hit a cloaked ship and get CONCORDed. Navy Ravens have been lost in this manner.Collecting a bounty requires podding.Podding incurs a HUGE security rating hit. Be sure you can afford it. Scamming is legal.You are not completely safe even in 1.0 space.Never rat in a lowsec/0.0 system with more than one jump point. Autopilot routes will ensure someone will stumble across you eventually. -- Support fixing the EVE UI | Suggest Jita fixes

-Always check local for war targets (if wardec'd) before exiting a station -When warping to a gate in lowsec don't warp to 0m, warp to 100m to make sure it's not camped by a gang capable of tanking the sentry guns -If you rely on autopilot in highsec be sure to change the default settings to explude lowsec systems. It will be longer travel, but slightly safer. -Learn how to install jumpclones, and how to properly store your implants on them -Don't rush into the biggest ship thinking it will be safer. All you'll do is spend more ISK replacing it.

Don't use the autopilot ever. Not even to plan routes through hisec. It is intended to get you killed, and is designed to ensure that you will have the greatest chance of losing your ship if you use it.
Use a cloak if you can and want to evade contact.
You can set your "warp to" distance to a custom value between 0 and 100 km. Setting this to an odd value can be useful.
Never warp to 0 in a 0.0 system with people in local. If the gate's bubbled, you're dead. Take a safespot near the gate and use your directional.
Don't stay in a safespot if you can't cloak. Keep moving. You can use the directional scanner while warping, learn how.
149,000,000 km is approximately 1 AU.
Press F11 to show the quick map. Your current directional scan width is indicated by a green cone, your current camera angle by a white one.
When using the directional scanner at angles less than 360, the scan is in a cone in the direction your camera is currently facing.
You can fly up and down as well as sideways. Don't be a flat-thinker.

* Check the price. * Check the price again. * Freeform contracts are scams. Always. (except when used in corps for tracking purposes). * Pressing shift when opening an info window opens it in a new window. * There's little arrows on the top right of an info window that lets you navigate back and forth through the recently viewed items. * The Compare Tool is made of epic win. * Named items are sometimes better than T2. * Price is not always an indicator of quality. * Veldspar is the most valuable ore in empire space in terms of ISK/hour. * Ombey's 2D EVE maps (ombeve.co.uk) are what you need. - Never accept a mission without checking the details.
Knowing what you are fighting gives you an edge when fitting your ship. Deliberately put yourself in danger on occasion - it is better to learn to fight before your corp goes to war. Be polite to the people who kill you - some of them will give you advice on what you did wrong. Make sure your clone is kept up to date. Playing on patch day is inherently risky.

how about "never warp to a gate in 0.0 PERIOD if theres people in system". Warping to ANY distance on the gate will still bring you into the bubble.

Whoring the forums with alts is the sport of the weak-minded. * When taking a bookmark, the point at which you click the "OK" button is when the bookmark is created, not when you click "Create Bookmark". * A "Grid" is about 300-500 km, depending on location. * When doing missions, especially in lowsec, the locations the missions were can make good safespots once it's over. * The best safespots are not directly between any two warpable objects in a system. * Bubbles won't decloak you. Most things at the edge of one will. * Microwarpdrives make you far easier to lock and hit.

> Ignore ship descriptions. The ferox is not a killing machine with good ewar. The celestis is not a blaster boat.
> Purpose is more important than stats. They merely show how good a given ship performs a specific function. All ships need to combine several functions to properly fight ; things affected by tactical variables , which can be exploited if your ship fits the right tactical niche. The lachesis has been nerfed terribly and is a very poor fighter in an average engagement - but it still has a few roles it excels at. It pays for itself easier than assault frigates , whose role is broken at the moment.
> You do not need maxed skills to pvp. If your favorite ship can't fit the standard setup because of powergrid or cpu issues , there are ways around it. Hint : if you are in a gang , you do not need a 44 cpu T2 scram.
> The number one rule of Eve : plan and anticipate. Check module prices for the ship you want to fly before you have finished training its skill. Then you can place a buy order or find them relatively cheap. Once your ship is fitted and ready , see what's best to use on the next ship you train for. You can make money off the market if you can anticipate price changes. You can avoid being ganked if you anticipate a gatecamp at a choke point. You can actually log in on weekends if you didn't log out in Jita.

Edited by: Spenz on 03/01/2008 01:13:02 Edited by: Spenz on 03/01/2008 01:12:36 * Warp Core Stabilizers are always used for travel. Never use them for a combat vessel.
* Inertial Stabilizers are more valuable than warp core stabilizers. A faster aligning ship is always safer than a ship that can jam a few warp scramblers.
* If a group of suicide gankers want you dead, you will die. Avoid major highways whenever you can if you are transporting valuable cargo (100m+).
* Never fit mis-matched turret weapon systems on a ship (ie blasters with rails). It is easier, more effective, and more efficient to fit your ship with the same weapon system (missile users can sometimes get away with this).
* Never shield AND armor tank. Always pick just one. Also make sure you pick a tanking option that your race is proficient at (Caldari = shields, Amarr = armor, Gallente = armor, Minmatar = armor/shields).
* The highest damage ammo is not always the best. There is a range penalty the more damage it does. Cap consumption also increases. Use a Semi-long range ammo type and a semi-short range ammo type. Narrows the midway range gap in which both ammo types are less than effective. Conversely you can use 3 ammo types, but that can lead to unnecessary micromanagement.
* Drones are not just a gallente weapon. They are valuable for every race. Train drones to lvl 5 and scout drones to lvl 4 at the least.
* Always load scripts into modules that require them. Not using a script greatly decreases there effectiveness.
* Learning skills might seem like a waste at first, but they knock YEARS off your training time. It is the only skill-set that doesn't provide instant gratification, but it is also the only skill-set that helps every skill you train.
* Never take other peoples jetcans unless you are prepared to fight.
* Do NOT shoot at people with low sec and/or bounties in high security space. Unless they are flashing red, you do NOT have Concord's permission to fire at them.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of Æ08,
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, polycarbs would be it. The long term benefits of polycarbs have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experienceà I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of the drake; oh nevermind; you will not understand the power and beauty of the drake until your not allowed to take them on fleet ops. But trust me, in 6 months youÆll look back at screencaps of yourself and recall in a way you canÆt grasp now how much tank lay before you and how ******* fabulous you really looked. YouÆre not as **** as you imagine. DonÆt worry about the k/d ratio; or worry, but know that worrying is as useful as an assault frigate
The real troubles in your life are gatecamps that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside when fallen asleep at your keyboard drunk, on some idle Tuesday night. Do one thing everyday that scares you.
Mine Veld.
DonÆt be reckless with other peopleÆs hearts by smacking, donÆt put up with people who are reckless with yours. Bump ship out of docking range
DonÆt waste your time on 0.01 isk wars; sometimes youÆre ahead, sometimes youÆre behindàthe race is long, and in the end, itÆs only with some undercutting son of a ***** ******* ****! Boast about the compliments you receive, forget the smack; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old hate mails, throw away your old bookmarks.
Smack.
DonÆt feel guilty if you didn't setup your character attributes correctly at the start. The most interesting people I know didnÆt and have been playing for 2 years and have 22m sp.
Lulz.
Get plenty of tritanium. Be kind to your ships, youÆll miss them when theyÆre popped. Maybe youÆll join a corp, maybe you wonÆt, maybe youÆll join an alliance,maybe you wonÆt, maybe youÆll quit at 40m sp, maybe youÆll rob your corp on your 1st anniversaryàwhat ever you do, donÆt stroke your e-peen too much or circlejerk yourself either; your choices are controlled by a super lag server, so are everybody elseÆs. Enjoy your nanof*g ship, use it every way you canàdonÆt be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, itÆs the greatest instrument youÆll ever own.
PEW PEW PEW,
even if you have nowhere to do it, but on your own blue list. Read the component description properties, effects, even if you donÆt have a ******* clue what they mean. Do NOT comment on goon or bob threads, they will only make you ugly. Get to know where your CEO lives in rl, you never know when theyÆll steal all the money out the corp wallet and be gone for good. Be nice to your corp mates; they are the best way to sponge money and the people most likely to drop you a cyno in the future. Understand that friends come and go, so **** them, you never liked them anyway. Live in Venal once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in the drone regions once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths, jita mineral prices will rise, alliance leaders will philander, you too will get greedy, and when you do youÆll fantasize that when you had low sp, prices were reasonable, alliance leaders were noble and noobs respected their directors. Respect your directors. DonÆt expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you will sell gtc, maybe you have a basement full of isk farmers; but you never know when either one might run out or die of starvation. DonÆt mess too much with your ship setup, or by the time you're on a fleet op, you have no idea to fly your ship and you die like a total r tard noob. Don't play caldari roulette with the self destruct button, in fleet ops in front of everyone, if you can't keep track of when to turn it off. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of salvaging/looting the swag from the wreck, tractoring it in, leaving the crap parts and reprocessing it for more than itÆs worth. But trust me on the polycarbs..

Edited by: Siriyana on 03/01/2008 02:50:47 * If you know your ship is going down and you're about to die, choose a celestial body, station, or stargate, and spam the warp-to button until your finger falls off. You'll thank your finger's sacrifice when your pod gets away before your enemies even blink from the pretty lights your ship makes while exploding.
* If your ship gets destroyed 10k off a stargate, warp away, then warp back at 0. Seriously, it's really dumb to just walk the last 10k to the gate in your pod.
* There's practically no such thing as "escaping with your pod" in 0.0.
* If someone docks to run away from your attack, undocks and docks again and does this for 30 minutes, then suddenly decides to undock and fight, the are bait. The 30 man gang is just outside the system waiting to come murder you.
* Most recon ships can tank sentries long enough to murder haulers, destroyers, frigates, and some assault frigates.
* Learn how to use the directional scanner. It will save your life.
* Even if that dude you're shooting at is flashy red and a "free target", he can shoot at you for the next 15 minutes after he blows up your ship, even if you get into a new ship.
* Hover your mouse over your aggro or global criminal timer; it will tell you what timers and what aggro you have, as well as how much time is left.
* If your GCC expires, your aggro may not have expired. Sentry guns may still shoot at you. This is entirely dependent on the last time sentry guns shot at you.

Why? You can instajump if you use the warp-to-zero function. The chances of getting killed are actually greater if you warp to any other range, in lowsec anyway. ------

Edited by: Jurgen Cartis on 03/01/2008 03:30:07 Learn to make safespots. You will need them when you stir up a hornets nest.
Learn to use the directional scanner.
Learn to use the map. A big red blob on the 'ship kills' filter usually means a gatecamp. A big red blob on the pod kills filter means a bubble camp. Avoid such systems.
If you choose to ignore the above, use a scout and bring friends. Preferably friends with guns.
Your drones are not your ship. Your ship is not your pod.
Check your clone. Again.
Just because the other guy in your lowsec system has a 4.1 sec status, doesn't mean he isn't hunting you.
Do not warp to random moons in lowsec/0.0. There may be POS there, and POS guns hurt.
Being in gang is NOT a license to shoot your gangmates, or their wrecks. If your gangmate is at war though, it is a license for someone to shoot YOU.
When missioning, tailor your fit to the mission. Hardeners/passive resists(on frigs and cruisers) are your friends. If you run a Kinetic tank against Bloods, your tank will probably fail.
Train Drones. A Battleship without drones will have a very hard time killing frigates up close.

Sometimes its better to underachieve than overextend. Never fly a ship you can't afford to lose, never take a mission you can't afford to finish.
Nothing will shock an industrial player more than the realization that even in 0.0, they're spending most of their time mining veldspar...
When you get to 0.0 and see ships that cost an extra 30-50% over Jita, consider that one easy slip on the way out from empire can make that Jita ship's price jump 100-300% if you get blasted in a gatecamp on the border and have to replace it.
NRDS sounds wonderful to any corporation until it has its own sovreign space. (Mad love to CVA for breaking this rule with grace and style, though.)

Originally by: Grimm Myn Thanks for all the tips. Just one suggestion, try not to use (or at least explain) complicated terms. Before the tips, a few terms for the noobs might be helpful. Oh and naming specific items just confuses noobs more as they have never heard/seen such items ;)
What interests me: - What exactly is a bubbled gateway? Cant I warp in, or rather, cant i warp out? - How DO i use the directional scanner? - "Lone ships in lowsec pipelines with no station in system are bait." no clue what that means.
Warp bubbles are traps that pull ships out of warp and onto the edge of the bubble. You can warp to 0, you can warp to 100km, the bubble still gets you. Bubbles range from a few kilometers in diameter up to 36km in diameter for the large ones. They can be destroyed..eventually... Once a bubble gets you, the only chance you have is burn hard for the gate. When you jump INTO a bubble on a gate, you cannot warp while inside of it. You must either burn back to the gate and jump out, or to the perimeter of the bubble. Third choice, stand and fight (not always possible, but hey, may as well do something other than bend over for them).
The directional scanner is the middle tab of your ships scanner, the button just above the tactical overlay on your little HUD at the bottom of your screen. You select a range, then you select an area of cover. I forget the maximum range, but its several AUs at least. If you set the scope of the scan to the smallest arc, you can align your ship to the destination and see if there are any uncloaked ships there. You'll have to do a little math, which is where the 149,000,000km per AU conversion comes in. Ranges on the overview are given in AU beyond 9,000,000 km, ranges in the scanner are always in kilometers.
Lone ship in newbie corp in non-station systems. To throw the unbaptized of 0.0 for a loop, a ganksquad will use a newbie corp alt as a spotter. Either for a log on trap, where the rest of the team is offline, but waiting on teamspeak or ventrillo to log in when the newbie alt tackles (warp scrambles and webifies) the target, or is alerting the ships on the other side of the gate that a target is coming through and to be ready. Its not always the case, but if you like the ship you're flying, you assume the worst anyway. This kind of thing, and a few other issues related to sovreignty, are the core of the NBSI policy (Not Blue, Shoot It) most 0.0 alliances follow. Any neutral is assumed hostile.
Blue standing means you have +5.0 or better standings with an alliance. This is attained via negotiation, almost all alliances have diplomatic contacts. Do NOT assume its going to be cheap OR easy to get blue standings. Most alliances like the idea of giving their PvP militaries something to shoot at to alleviate boredom between wars, and unless you provide some valuable service to them, they've got no reason to want you around. You represent competition in what is otherwise a captive alliance market.

A few glossary terms:
Bubble camp: Any gate camp using Interdictor or mobile warp disruptors to entrap prey. Mobile Warp Disruptors are permanent until removed by destruction or unanchoring. Interdictor bubbles only last a few minutes (they cannot be targeted like the mobiles).
NRDS: Not Red, Don't Shoot. A rarely used policy where a corp or alliance will only initiate combat against known hostile players (Red Standings) or war targets.
NBSI: Not Blue, Shoot It. The more common policy where an alliance will attack any player that does not have positive standings with them.
Nanogang: A group of ships in a roaming PvP gang that are entirely composed of speed rigged ships. These ships are typically capable of speeds in excess of 5km/s, with some interceptors approaching 20km/s. They are incredibly difficult to entrap, and while no threat to large groups, they can lay waste to lone ratting ships with ease.

Thanks Janu. Informative :)
I dont want to hijack this thread or go off topic but i got a few more questions.
Mobile Warp Distruptors is like a weapon or something you jettison to use? And Interdictors are ships, no? Wouldnt I be able to target the ship itself making the bubble? And the last question. Isnt jumping == Warping? i.e. Can i still JUMP if bubbled or am i completely stuck and need to try fly out the bubble to warp?

Mobile warp disruptor is an anchorable device that projects a bubble preventing warp within it. They come in different sizes- small, "Aw dang!" and OMGWTF. Interdictors are ships that can fit interdiction sphere launchers- a type of probe that projects a warp disruption field, but unlike the mobile warp disruptor, expires after a time. Jumping != warping. Warping is FTL travel in a system. You can jump out of a bubble, assuming you can make it back to the gate, which is no mean feat. You cannot warp to another point in the system unless you get out of the bubble.

-Sort the market by distance. What costs X in the system you're in might cost 1/10th X just one jump away.
-Always check the Market History tab before making a big purchase. What you're buying might not be selling for it's value today. Competition will almost always bring it back in line. If it doesn't, buy a couple cheaper in another system and get in on the action.
-For items over 1m isk, always check contracts first. Especially if you're looking for a set: chances are, someone has already done the leg work for you.
-T2 isn't always more expensive than named -- in fact, it's usually cheaper. Go with T2 guns over 'Scouts' if you can make them fit them comfortably.
-When attacked by a drone boat, SHOOT THE DRONES FIRST.
-It's not murder -- it's surprise death. Go with an unusual fit (autocannons on a battleship, for example) to surprise an enemy anticipating a different challenge. Likewise, expect the unexpected.
-Fit for the slots you have, not the bonuses. If a ship has 5 mids and 3 lows then tank shield, not armor.
-Even shield tankers should fit a Damage Control. 50% hull resists will save your life more than once.
-Blockade Runners make excellent 0.0 shuttles. +2 WCS built in, 3-4km3 haulage capacity, fast align, 9.0 au/s warp, and can fit MWDs.
-Train the Compensation skills. All of them.
-Train the Learning skills. All of them.
-Train the Navigation skills. All of them.
-And most of all, play in the style that you enjoy the most. If you're grinding away at something and constantly threatening to quit, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!

*Is what you are doing in Eve fun for you? Work can be fun, but if the word work = boring in your mind, and what you are doing feels like work, do something else for a while.
*Patience is a virtue in Eve. Exercise it often. Patience in skill training, patience in advancing to a better ship
*Patience when you jump in on a gate camp <-- Stop for a few seconds, review your situation, and plan out a course of action to survive the camp. On that note:
*Planets on your overview usually doesn't hurt. It gives you more choice of objects to warp to when in trouble.
*Learn from your losses. Repeat after me, it's just a ship. You will lose them. Your goal should be to (a) maximize their effectiveness while alive and (b) keep them alive longer.
*Don't whine on the forums when you lose your ship or get podded. It happens. The most important thing is you learn what you did wrong or why that situation led to you losing your ship. Then you play better next time.

Standings.
Use standings settings, even if its just your own personal settings.
If you run into hostiles that kill you, note what corporation they belong to, and adjust your standings accordingly. If you meet a group from a corp that helps you out, let'em know you're giving them blue standings.
You can even adjust settings so that an otherwise friendly corporation or alliance has a few people in it with opposite settings based on previous encounters.
Start to learn who your friends and enemies are. You may start off life with more enemies than friends, but over time, the blue list starts to build up. In any event, knowing at a glance you're in the same system as someone who's screwed with you in the past gives you that much extra edge in preparing for their actions.
Corporations.
If you're in a newbie corp, set up a corporation of your own. One of the first steps in being treated something like a human being comes from getting out of the newbie pool. Even if the corporation is nothing more than your main toon and two rolled up and station sitting alts, its enough for you to walk up to an organization as a representative of a group seeking some kind of standings, rather than an individual.
VERY VERY VERY few alliances will deal with newbie corpers. Most view newbie corps as dumping grounds for hauler alts, spies, and ISK farmers. (Rightly so, too)
Wardecs.
They happen, life goes on. When you are in a small corp that gets decced, check the competition out. Look at their numbers, look at their history. Are they a big corp trying to play Darwin? Are they pirates trying to push you around in high sec? Did you step on someone's toes? Find out why you were brought to their attention.
When you get wardecced as a small group, the odds are the deccing corp has some knowledge of your capabilities, or lack thereof. Move around. Shift operations to another system or agent a few jumps away. If you can't fight with strength, hide intelligently. PvP in empire is largely about picking on targets of opportunity. Its as viable a win as blowing them up to deny them their opportunities. Afterall, they have to pay for the right to attack you.

Are you docked? Think there is a gatecamp outside? Just undock in your Pod and look... just make sure you DONT move. After 20 seconds dock again! Why does this work 95% of the time
1) 20 second timer for redocking 2) 20 seconds of being untargetable after undocking aslong as you DONT move 3) Can be incredably hard to bump a pod out of docking range
Why does it fail 5% of the time 1) Lag 2) Lucky bump

Why? You can instajump if you use the warp-to-zero function. The chances of getting killed are actually greater if you warp to any other range, in lowsec anyway.
The reason you don't warp-to-zero to the gate is because you run the risk that the gang camping the gate will split their forces and send some tacklers across the gate. Now you're screwed cause the baddies on the gate with you will scram and engage you. Your only option is to jump across into the waiting arms of their friends. It's a lose-lose situation you'll put yourself in.

Do not log off in Jita. Do not fly though Jita on Saturday or Sunday.
A decent covert ops pilot can scan out your safespot in under 60 secs.
If you are in an all AF/Inty/Frig gang and you spot a lone BS 100 km off the gate....probably not a good idea to warp directly on top of him else you all be sent back to the clone bay via smartbomb express.
You always scram your target first then web him. Never ever web before scram cause all you'll end up doing is help your target get into warp.
As a rule of thumb for planning, a frigate can cross a system in 45 secs, a cruiser can do it in about a min, BSs tend to take a little longer than a min (about 75 secs).
Scorpions and BBs are known as flying coffins for a reason.

I have a few.
1)If a ship you know you can beat in a fight attacks you on purpose he's holding you down for help to arrive.
2)Covert ops frigates and pods require you to right click and use the drop down menu to lock, everything else you can use control and left mouse click.
3)1vs1 mean 1vs4. With capital support.
4)Anyone who fights in the same system of empire should be engaged with extreme caution. They will refit to your ships and probably have out of corp logistical help.
5)Never buy anything from local. The ten million you will save five times wont pay for the hundred million you will lose once.
6)The map shows pilots in space in the last 30 mins, and ships and pods destroyed in the last hour. Use them always when entering low sec and 0.0.
7)Never fly an overpowered ship with an underpowered fit (HAC with t1 guns / fit). Always fly an underpowered ship with overpowered mods ('caine with faction overheated web). You will get more fights, and the ones you get you will win more often.
8)Risk/Reward is the most important thing to ANY eve player. If your corp is at war 50 insured cruisers flown by 5 guys > 5 HAC's flown by 5 guys.
9)ALWAYS use a gang to complement itself. Mix your logistics / ewar / dps so that it works. Grabbing the ship your in will get your gang killed.
10)The damage control module is useful on almost every ship.

Auto-piloting through high-sec will get you killed if the cargo you are carrying is worth more than the ship the ganker is flying. Don't believe me? Hop into a shuttle or industrial and head to any system surrounding Jita. Set an autopilot trip for any system within 15 jumps or so, now activate autopilot and just watch yourself fly along. At various gates the odds are good that you will be targeted by players (usually players in Battleships). These players are scanning your cargo to see what you are carrying. If you have something in your cargohold that is worth more than their ship, they will attack you, pop your ship, and scoop the loot with a nearby friend or alt. NEVER autopilot with goods you cannot afford to lose.

1) When you first take the plunge into 0.0 you must sort out your overview so that only hostile targets show up.
Get rid of drones, npcs, cans, wrecks, roids and all other crap that you wont need to use in pvp. These will just lag you out and clutter the overview so that it will become difficult to target what you want.
This means that eventually you should cobble together many preset overview settings for the variety of situations you might encounter. A good example is that when you are at war and are flying through empire, make sure that only war targets show up or you might accidentally shoot the wrong person and get yourself concorded.
2) When you shoot someone or they shoot you it means you are agressed. Provided you did not fire back (which means that you are aggressed too) it simply means that should you escape, there will be a longer delay before you dissapear from local after logging off giving the aggressor slightly more time to find you with a probe.
If you initiated the aggression in low sec and near a gate, the gate guns will fire on you and you will not be able to jump through stargates until the agression has ended (either you stop firing and wait until aggression passes before jumping or you kill your target and wait).
If you initiate agression in 0.0 you will not be subject to gate gun fire (there are no gate guns in 0.0 space) but will still have to wait before aggression is lifted before being able to jump through stargates.

"Always load scripts into modules that require them. Not using a script greatly decreases there effectiveness."
Some one said this earlier but it is not neccessarily true. My interceptor uses a scan enhancer on its mid. When I put a script on it I either get good range or insane lock time but I found that simply running it without a script gives me the perfect range and a small boost to lock time that I love.
Alternate suggestion: "Always ask WHY you are fitting a module that requires scripts before you fit it. Then decide whether to load a script into modules that require them."

Surprised some people still don't know this one.
To find out how your ship and skill _affect_ your modules and ammo, use the 'modules' tab in 'show info' of an active ship, either _when docked_ or in flight. Ammo is listed at the bottom, and can be used to check weapon range and damage.
Surprising how many people don't even get this one entirely right...

- If your gang jumps a single drake in the belt, that is talking to you, but his buddy who is docked is not, some of your gang are going to die horribly.
- Your scanner can scan 20AU. If your not within range of the gate, look for a planet near the gate and use it to scan. If all else fails, warp at 100 and turn your ship towards the nearest object in space.
- When checking prices in different regions at the same time (multiple accounts) make sure your checking the same item. It sucks when those amazing profits turn to crap.
- When trading, you can buy as much stuff as you want, however, not everyone wants to buy the volume you have.
- Someone else already said it, but scouts are your friends. - If you can fly a battleship, it doesnt mean you should.
- Other capsuleers who give you advice in local, are usually looking out for you from experience, take the advice.
-RENAME YOUR SHIP - XYZ's Rifter tells the people hunting you exactly what and who they're looking for.
- If you have one safe spot in a system, and they're probing, at least hit your MWD and be aligned so you dont get caught with your pants down

may be easier (and safer) if you apply the directional scanner:
1) warp to a planet 2) point camera at a moon 3) set scan distance to approx distance of moon 4) find abandoned shuttle/rookie ship 5) profit
* you also get a free rookie ship by docking with any station in a pod, unless there is already another ship docked there that you can use
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
Not sure if someone said this already:
* Always target enemy drones. If it's a drone ship, kill them immediately and destroy 80% of their DPS. * If it's not a drone ship, still probably a good idea unless you know you can take them. * Strength in numbers * Be nice to pirates if you get killed. Most of them are nice folk just trying to make a living. You might also make some friends too!  * When looking for prey in lowsec. Make sure not to set destination to a high sec system. If you play the game drunk or tired like I often do, faction police or CONCORD might pop you.
Notes on travel:
- Never use auto pilot (Its been said but can be stressed enough)
- Frigs and cruisers sitting on gates may have passive targeters and cargo scanners, be aware
- Never use ECM bursts, they will get you killed
- Know where you are and where you are going. Know the short routes between major hubs such as Jita and Hek or Ammar and Rens and expect trouble along them.
- Fit for speed. In low sec you may encounter a Heavy Interdictor or enough Interceptors to beat your 6 warp stabs. In a bubble it is always best to burn for the gate rather than try and make it to the edge, but you still need to be fast.
- Make bookmarks 200+km above or below gates you commonly travel through in low sec and 0.0. In the event that a gate is bubbled you can still warp to your bookmark, not get pulled into the bubble and then warp to the gate. Do this especially for lowsec-0.0 crossings.
- When in a blockade runner know that your warp strength role bonus is useless. Don't bother fitting more warp stabs. Don't fit for speed either, fit for agility (inertial stabs).
- Blockade runner insta warp trick. Fit a cloak and a 10mn MWD. When you encounter a gatecamp (Not a bubble!) do the following in rapid sucession: Align to the gate you want to warp to (double click just below it in space) Activate your MWD Cloak In 10 seconds your MWD will turn off, decloak and hit warp. You will already be at speed and warp before anything can lock you.
- Transporting Blueprints in a shuttle or frig may seem like a good idea but its not. Look at the wreckage in space after any gatecamp and you will see that the most common ships down are the small guys
- If you find your self at a gatecamp that you know you cant escape do nothing. If you are lucky some other poor sucker will decloak first or jump in and try to warp off distracting the pirates giving you a window to escape. (Note that this is only good for the 30 seconds that you remain cloaked)
- Statistics on your star color tab in map settings is your friend, spend some time to get to know him.
Notes on Information
- EvE is metagaming. Know this, understand this, cherish this.
- Do not be afraid to ask questions on the forums, in channels, to pilots. There is a vast wealth of information out there, but be wary of what you learn, many people are just as ignorant as you but wont admit it.
- If you use the forums take some time to get to know who the "regulars" are. Many through and important guides have been written by them and when they answer a question it is the one you want to pay attention to. Check peoples sigs for links to guides and programs.
- EvE forums have terrible information cataloging. Stickies are not updated and the search function is worse than useless. EvE Search Archives the forums and has better search functionality. EvE Files Its where people put things Battleclinic A good place to first start finding 3rd party resources EvE Central A powerful market tool, please contribute. SHC A second forum. If you do anything remotely political or have any interest in that stuff this is where you escape the pit of CAOD. It also has very good ship discussions. - Spread sheets and 3rd party programs are your friends. There are a wealth of things out there that will make every aspect of EvE simpler and easier to comprehend, find them.
There is more but I am out of space.
If your overview gets messed up, i.e. a ship is displayed with the wrong icon, or a non-existent ship sticks around, then click once in space, then hit the tab key twice.
This shades all your windows and then restores them, which usually fixes the overview display bug. --
If someone opens a trade window and offers to sell you a 'raven navy issue', right click on it and see if it says 'view market details'. If it's a real one, that wont be there, you cant sell them on the market. You'll see the option for 'view market details' if it's a plain raven, renamed to look like a navy raven.
Why? You can instajump if you use the warp-to-zero function. The chances of getting killed are actually greater if you warp to any other range, in lowsec anyway.
Also in 0.0 they can put a bubble near a gate, not on it, and drag you into their bubble kill zone, away from the gate. 100km is not far enough away to avoid the pull of the bubble.
In 0.0 systems with only two gates, they sometimes put bubbles along the line between the gates to pull you *out of warp*. Always try to jump indirectly via planets or other safespots if you can to avoid obvious lines of approach.
Warp to 70 or some other distance than 100 when in a covert ops. Surprising how many times an object can be found at 100km along a common warp line to stations and gates.
In general, people who use "always", and "never" haven't learned to think outside the box.
Check your insurance before undocking.
It is sometimes more fun playing eve with a gang then by yourself, so join a corp ...
... and sometimes its not... so go rat/mission/explore/pvp/mine by yourself sometimes.
A fully trained/equiped covert ops pilot can probe you out in about 20 secs.
Warping to a buddy going 7.5k makes it really hard for covert ops pilots to get you.
If your in a dictor, and can get ahead of the gang running away from your gang, bubble the gate at 100km.
This thread is supposed to be for advanced tips. I got a little carried away and listed novice tips I tend not to see elsewhere.
* Market - When viewing items under the Browse tab on the left, prices shown in the Groups tab on the right are likely _not_ the "best price in the region" as it says. Either click on the specific item under the Browse tab or use the Search tab and click on the specific item there. This will show you the prices under Details tab on the right which may be sorted by price.
* Chat Windows - Select 'show text only' in the top right of chat windows. - Right click in a black area of chat and select toggle timestamp to turn it on. - Use ctrl-uparrow to repeat your statements from the chat cache.
* Capcitor - Your capacitor recharge rate is not constant. The rate of recharge is greatest when the capacitor is 20-25% full. It is very slow when nearly empty or worse at 0% and slowest of all when it is nearly full.
* Mining - While mining the message that says ore is "...jettisoned into space, unrecoverable" because your cargo bay is full is wrong. The ore amount normally mined by the mining laser is simply not subtracted from the asteroid. - Ore mined by a mining drone remains on the asteroid until the drone has completed its return to the ship.
* Tactical Overlay - It often helps to play with this on and with a zoomed out view. It is one of the buttons on the left side of your HUD.
* Aligning - To make aligning easier zoom out (scroll button) your view some so your ship appears at least somewhat small. Locate the object you wish to align to or observe your friend's ship fly off into the backround and rotate your camera angle until that object/spot appears somewhere in the background free of clutter. Double left click close to the object or on the spot and repeat until your ship begins to accelerate. Keep in mind you do not need to center the distant object/spot in the middle of the screen while you are doing this. Once your ship is up to 75% top speed initating warp to that object will instantly take you into warp. Useful when you might need to enter warp quickly. - The slower your ship is moving when it attempts to align the faster it will align.
* Stopping fast - Use ctrl-space to tell your ship to stop then tell your ship to move opposite to the direction it is moving. The velocity will drop much faster. Hit ctrl-space again when the velocity is near zero.
* Misclick from lag - Often players click 1 item below what they intend to click on while using EVE right click menus. This is because the selection highlighter lags behind the mouse pointer and does not stay directly under it when video lag is involved. As a player moves the pointer down the list they do so until the highlight lands on their desired selection which is often when the pointer is one selection below it. Ignore the highlight and pay attention to your pointer. You can also speed up the opening of submenus with a left click instead of waiting for it to open by hovering the pointer.
* Energy weapon crystals - Beam and Pulse weapons use frequency crystals currently do not stack in the ship cargo bay when swapped out/unloaded from your weapons. In order to assure that they load properly when swapped back in you must first open your ship cargo bay and stack them with the 'stack all' command. Otherwise lag may prevent one or more crystals from loading properly which will require an extra step of right clicking the module that failed to load and clicking reload. == Support fixing the EVE UI |
Edited by: Cyxopyc on 28/02/2008 23:44:45 * Client freeze in battle - EVE normally automatically warps your ship away if the client loses connection from the server. If your computer or EVE client locks up the server still detects an active connection and won't attempt to get your ship out of danger. Don't sit watching the screen assuming it's lag. If your locked up you need to reboot or turn off your computer fast. This should give you a chance of saving your ship. (Warping fleets into some missions may create long load times)
* Trading in station - As players dock the guests list shifts. If you are right clicking to start a trade you may find out too late you're not trading with who want. Verify the name on the trade window.
* PVP high/low secure space - This is very complicated with many intended and untended exceptions and also unknowns (at least for me). This is what I know or am pretty sure about. 0.0 PvP and wars are not considered here and are easier to describe. - The only time you are completely safe is while docked in a station regardless of what ship you are in. A battleship with high value modules/cargo could be a target in high security space.
- Ships that have you as a locked target show a yellow flashing square around their ship symbol in space and in the overview. Locking target is _not_ an attack.
- Ships attacking you show a red flashing square around their ship symbol in space and in the overview. Smartbombs and ECM Burst modules do not require a locked target to hit nearby objects.
- A flashing red player in your overview (the entire overview row flashes) indicates you may attack that player without Concord security status loss or Concord punishing you with ship destruction. This does _not_ mean you are currently flashing red to them or that they are currently attacking you.
- Stealing another player's items from a yellow cargo container or yellow wreck makes the thief flash red to the owner and the owner's corp. By default a warning window will appear when you are about to steal. Concord does not consider stealing a strong act of aggression that they need to act on. There is no Security Status loss for stealing.
- For purposes of aggression flagging newbie NPC starter corps and NPC corps players end up in when they leave a player corp are different than regular player corps. Essentially you are a single player corp. An offense against you is an offense against only you and no one else.
- When performing illegal aggression toward another you receive a 15 minute Aggression Countdown flag, mouse over it to see who you are flashing red to. If they attack you before the countdown expires the timer is reset to 15 minutes.
- Concord Security Status also known as "Security Status" loss will occur when you illegally attack a ship (-0.5%), destroy that ship (-2.0%), attack the pod (no change), and destroy the pod (-12.5%). Currently attacking a ship gives conflicting information (-1.0%) in your combat log but (-0.5%) under Character Sheet, Security Status.
- Using aggressive modules (turrets, launchers, smartbombs, web, warp scramble, nos, dampen, ECM, etc...) on objects owned by another such as abandoned ships, drones, (yellow) wrecks, (yellow) cargo containers and structures like those found in missions are treated as attacks on a player by Concord. Note that in all cases except _smartbombs_ and _ECM_burst_modules_ you receive a warning window by default asking if you wish to proceed with your attack. == Support fixing the EVE UI |
- If a player(s) illegally attacks and destroys your ship without you attacking back you receive "Kill Rights" under Character sheet, 2nd from bottom. You have 30 days to avenge yourself by destroying one of their ships without penalty from Concord. All parties involved receive either 'CAN KILL' or 'CAN BE KILLED BY' notifications under Kill Rights. There is no flag, flashing or coloring in the overview to indicate Kill Rights if the involved parties get in view of each other. kill Rights are currently bugged a bit - Kill Rights bug.
- If you're concerned a stranger joining your fleet may be at war here's how to check their corp for war decs. Corporation button, Wars tab, Other Wars tab, Select button, search for their corporation name and click once on it, click OK.
- Salvaging yellow wrecks is not breaking any Empire law and won't make you flash red. That doesn't mean the owner of the wrecks won't be mad.
* Warp Disruptor Bubbles
From what I understand the following is true for all Warp Disruptor Bubbles. 1) If you are inside the bubble you cannot initiate warp. 2) Your ship ends up somewhere inside the bubble if the exit of your warp tunnel is within a certain range of the bubble _and_ a line exactly overlaying your warp path intersects the bubbles surface.
Key: objects or bookmarks in order 'a' 'b' 'c', bubble 'o',
These two setups will capture ships warping from stargate 'a' to stargate 'b'. The bubble is as close to 'b' as possible. a b0
a ob
This setup will not capture a ship warping from stargate 'a' to stargate 'b'. a o b
* Log I'm used to viewing the damage that I do and the damage received as it occurs in MMOGs. Ideally you know your optimal range and transversal velocity needed to hit your target type the most often and for the most damage and don't need to see any feedback, I'm not the ideal player.
EVE's damage reports are displayed in two ways. One way is the rectangle that appears during battle in the top middle of the screen. This does not display every message but rather just one of the many received messages every few seconds. After you are beyond the first missions in a rookie frigate it never displays everything during combat.
The second way is the Log window. It is found under Accessories at the bottom of the NeoCom. Make a shortcut to open the Log (I use ctrl-L). In the left most column clicking on the header "Time" alternates scrolling between up and down. Set the white triangle next to the word "Time" pointing up and move the scroll bar on the right edge all the way up. I also adjust the size of the log window so at least one complete round of attacks is visible then slide it partly off the screen to the left and click the 'pin' button to make it transparent. For some time the log window found me pulling what little hair I have left out however this setup with the text scrolling down has been the most trouble free. Also uncheck "Show incurred hit notifications" under (ESC > General Settings > Inflight) to reduce spam effect in this window.
There's also a glitch that occasionally stops output to this window. I don't know what causes it but clicking on "Time" restores output.
