Some of the guys at work were talking about and convinced me to give it a try. They told me that it was strategy based and involved spaceships. They even showed me the Eve-Online website. With a litte more coaxing - I couldn't figure out why I would pay monthly for a game - I finally did the trial and have been here ever since.

I was driving along listening to Jeremy Vine on radio 2 and they were doing an article about addiction to 'video' games. The article was being discussed because there had actually been a rehab centre set up for those who were hopelessly addicted to gaming.
Whilst listening I heard Eve Online mentioned a few times so when I got home I googled it to see what all the fuss was about. That was a year and a half ago and I'm still happily addicted  |

After SWG augered in, I was sad watching my guild and the town we built (Mesa de Veganza) vanish.
I was reading Penny-Arcade one day and saw the EVE ads, and decided to check it out. And here I am.

I first tried a trial account when penny-arcade made mention of the game way back when. I didn't play for too long that first time, bouncing off the learning curve(wall?) at that time. Came back to the game quite a bit later and stuck with it

Picked up the game at the local "game" store when it was sold over here in the UK.
Tried it for about 2 weeks and gave up to due to the lacking UI
picked it up again after "mektek" killed off Mechwarrior for me and a few clanners...Rest is history.
CCP: Were good at making empty promises..

Because everyone on the X Universe forums hates EVE like EVE hates WoW. So I had to check it out.
Only, the people in X Universe have reason to be jealous and scared. However, EVE people knocking WoW is just tacky, sort of like Man U beating up on Derby County, if I've got my similes correct.

I am playing Eve because frankly all other MMOs are the same..that is they are mass-market drivel that waters down the content in order to appeal the widest number of people.
That makes for bland, boring, unchallenging content that frankly I find beneath my capabilities as a gamer.
Eve is a MMO with the training wheels taken off..you fall down in Eve, you get hurt, and if you have even half a brain you learn how to dust yourself off and keep going rather than crying to anyone who will listen about how walking is too hard and 'unsafe'. In short, in Eve the risks match the rewards.
In 'other' MMOs, they hand out rewards like candy to kids during a parade. You get goodies simply for being there not because you actually accomplished anything. That is BORING!
In Eve you climb to the top NOT because you are some obsessive-compulsive who has hours on end to grind the same set of mobs over and over, no in Eve you have to have a brain, understand how money works, how risk management works, understand logistics, planning, etc.
Sure Eve may only have 200k players but as far as MMOs go, Eve is home to the cream of the crop in my book. Everything else is a Fisher-Price toy or 'saftey' scissors. Perfect for those who never stopped eating glue in school (aka the Ralph Wiggums of the world)

Cut my addiction to MUDs (Curse you Iron Realms!) but was longing for that online community feel (different from IRL interaction somehow). Hours of fruitless searching for something that didn't include wizards and magic I found Tabula Rasa. Got into the beta but didn't enjoy it, so remembered EVE Online from a Penny Arcade ad. Half a year now I think.

I came here when Galaxies was "WoWed". I lasted 2 years of the NGE hoping it would change back but after the devs started trying to NGE space I just gave up and joined the only complex game on the MMO market :P
I miss pre-nge galaies but gotta admit eve is everything I want in an MMO plus just about everyone here hates wow as much as me :D

A Goon introduced me to Eve Online IRL but I didn't like the game (I thought it was too cold and harsh). Then I get really interested in space opera so I decided to give Eve Online a try after all. Spending my first four months mastering the learning curve kept me interested. Then I joined a player corporation and now I'm hooked.

I saw all the good reviews on MMORPG that this game rocks. I think it is the only game that I heard of where starting players have a chance to make it big in-game. Like when fighting a level 70 toon, a group of level 10 toons can kill an epic level 70 toon. I know this is not possible in World of Warcraft because level 70 pwns anything not level 70. And I decided to give it a go. Looks fun so far.

Looking for something different. I started in December of '06, lasted about six months, then took a semi-break, maintaining some training, until I returned a month or two ago, and got back into it.
This wasn't an easy game to get into, the level of hostile paranoia in this game is higher than anything I've seen, even in Entropia Universe where real money is on the line. But once you're across the threshold and can handle the quirks of fate in this game, its rather enjoyable.

I blame Google for my addiction. MMO + Not wow + free trial + scifi = EvE. Tried to convert my WoW roommates but they are really into cool "medieval stuff" and space ships are for nerds.

I played WoW for two years, and gradually came to hate it. The Utopian "be nice to everybody" model doesn't work. I kept wishing there was something in space - something like multiplayer Elite or Frontier (Elite 2). I played Frontier for years.
Anyway, I did some searching and found Eve. I've been playing for a few months now. Eve is way better than WoW, in my opinion, and I intend to play long-term. There's still plenty of stuff in Eve that seems to suck: lag, nerfs after people have spend ages training for a ship/module (just like in WoW), and a "high sec" model that doesn't seem to work to well since anyone can wardec your corp anytime... but even so, it's miles better than WoW, I think. Unless a better space MMORPG comes along, I don't think I'll be playing anything other than Eve for the forseeable future. |

Hm.. well i vaguely remember signing up for the beta, but tbh i forgot all about it, then in 2004 i got an e-mail with the link to the 2 week trial.
Someone else i knew at that time was playing eve so i thought i'd give it a shot, came up with this terrible name cuz i was lazy and didn't expect to still be playing after the 2 week trial ended... and there u have it.. almost 4 years later and still going strong.
CCP, let us pay the online shop with Direct Debit!!!

hmmmm... was a fair bit ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but...
Earth and Beyond was starting to annoy me (I was a Jenquai Defender, which would sort of be like an Amarr in terms of getting ignored by the DEVs I suppose), and EVE was just getting released.... I got into Beta, and liked it a lot... so I switched.

was fed up playing EQ2 and was trolling the Vanguard SOH forums before it relelased when someone mentioned EVE (in fact a few people did) so I signed up.
I don't play VGSOH any more, but I'm still here 18 months on.

I first heard about Eve in late 2000... I'd ended up in a university that I utterly hated, and so hid out online in the library for most of the time I was'nt locked in a photographic darkroom...
The concept of a MMO that was'nt tolkienseque fantasy tat appealed to me, and I've been here ever since.
of course, back then it was a very different place... I really liked the ideas forums, and a lot of discussions in them really caught my interest.
My biggest annoyance is that at the time or release, I had just moved again, so did'nt have a suitable phone line for a few months to sign up on day 1 :/

Best space 'sim' evah! And I have 'sim' in inverted commas due to the fact that we don't really have any idea what it would be like. But we enjoy this estimation.
Also - ever since 'Privateer' I've been intrigued by the whole commercial/space thing. Spaceships and markets and missions just seem to hold me attention longer then most other things.

I grew up with elite on the speccy and bbc so when i saw some screenies in a uk games mag thought i'll keep an eye on that.Started in may 03 when it went retail been hooked ever since .

Score another one for the Guiding Hand Social Club article in PC Gamer. I didn't start playing immediately, but I remembered the article being fascinating when some friends from City of Heroes mentioned playing EVE. Here I am, and finally cancelled my totally unused, 4 year old CoH account just before Christmas. I'm home:-)

Unfortunately, if the economics are very fine, the pew pew lobotomizes me and the pve/mining, well is good for chinese farmers. Homeworld 2 is far better than eve, even if it is not a MMO.

I have always played space games from Elite through to Wing commander and X wing games. I was a Jumpgate and Starlancer multiplayer vet until its practical demise also some limited time into freespace 2 and played Freelancer for the last 4 years. Freelancer is thoroughly past its best and is just crap poor quality buggy mods run by player admins who are biased towards their own clans (Freelancer is pretty much a clan based game)
Much to my regret I always avoided EVE due to listening to other people to much who gave it a bad press and I didn't like the sound of "point and click" but I tried it and became hooked as its a lot deeper than I thought. Also EVE is the only MMO I have played others dont interest me.

I play this game because a lot of MMOs have either been disappointing or did not live up to the expectations of what I want to do which is to have fun. World of Warcraft bored me, Lineage 2 is fun but repetitive, so honestly, EVE is getting better but lot of changes going on in a matter of weeks with patch after patch.

I first saw it years ago, some time after playing Freelancer and thinking it looked amazing but at the time I didnt have an internet connection at home and well time went on =(
Fast forward a few years and im in college and one of my mates is a hopeless EvE addict (down to his EvE bandana, EvE shirt and crazy internet spaceship lingo ) who spends most of first year explainin why and how EvEs the best thing since sliced bread. Then soon as I get a proper internet connection at home he offered to pay for my first month as a kind gesture, but we EvEers know better, you get someone into EvE he aint gettin out

I used to buy a new game each week, none of them mmo's. most of them FPS, none of them online.
I went to buy a new game and was in a hurry. I was looking for a space game, saw EVE and just grabbed it.
After I installed it and seen that it would cost me $15 a month I was ****ed off! I could not believe this madness. I figured since I bought it I may as well try it. So I paid for 1 month.
Then I found out there were other REAL people playing!!
Long story short I have been playing for over 4 years now and have only bought 5 new games since.
I think I will be here until the servers shut down.

Well, most of my co-workers at the time played WOW. A lot we're always trying to get me to play with them. But, I wouldn't because I don't like games that restrict you in the ways that those types of games do ( NO FREESTYLE PLAY WHAT SO EVER).
So, I come back to the office after spending some 7 months off site and a couple of co-workers convinced me this was the game I was looking for. So I tried it out. Now I've been at it for over 3 years now.
And I even killed one of the co-workers that introduced me to the game. It was funny as hell and he didn't speak to me at work for close to two weeks  .

3 simple reasons:
Single, persistent universe.
Constant PvP in all areas; market, trading, combat, etc.
Realtime skill training rather than time spent in game == character "level".
It's what sets EVE apart and what makes it better than all the rest.

I used to play WoW. /me ducks quickly. I got a few chars up to 20-26 and got very....bored. Some SL folks I know were talking about EVE in TeamSpeak and I figured I'd give it a shot.
Here it is almost a year later, and I find myself wishing to return to the WoW realm....in my Myrmidon. EVERYONE DIES NOW!!

I played Guild Wars (or should I say Build Wars) for 2 years and the spam in local, including the idiotic nerfs to support the new installments made me take a break. In that time, a close friend told me about Eve and I watched him play. I signed up, and was hooked

I read the story by Nightfreeze, The Big Scam or something like that. Great writing, whether it's a true story or not. After reading that, I had to try Eve. The rest is history.

I started playing EVE basically because I wanted to try out an MMO. But I'm kinda done with the whole fantasy-setting with those annoying pointy-eared bastards of elves and midget red-bearded dwarves and ****.
A friend of mine saw EVE, and was playing the trial. He told me I should check it out, and so I did. We played for about 6 months after that, and then took a break of about 6 months as well. We both just recently returned (about a month ago). The 6-month break really helped, I'm enjoying it again now.

My parents forced me to play it from my wooden cage.
In the early days if i didn't mine more that 10K of veldspar an hour, they would let uncle dave poke me in the bottom with his purple man helment
I still farm Veldspar to this day to keep my assets tight

I first started MMO's with Everquest (1 not 2). I played that for about 3 years and found that the expansions were just getting ridiculous in the content. So I branched out to others.... I tried WOW for 2 months, Guild Wars for a month, EVE for about a month, went back to EQ, Vanguard for a week (wish I didn't spend the $50 on that game, LOTRO for 3 months then I came back to EVE. I have only been back with EVE for a week but I am having lots of fun so far so I'm hoping this sticks...

for me it was because eve was like the old game elite but multiplayer where you could go anywhere you wanted and do what you wanted....and for a long time it was like that you could amble around and do just that and also do things on your own when you wanted

Having played ELITE on BBC micros with vector graphics and loving it, it sort of became an obviouse choice.

I started MMOs with Myst Online: Uru Live BETA, just because I loved the Myst games/books. I never played any MMOs before that and had sworn that I never would. After Beta the bugs were getting to me, having to wait for half an hour to log in or to switch from one "Age" to another (something like switching from one system to another in Eve), and the lack of anything to do started to get to me so I left. But I still wanted something online, so I went to Stargate Online: Trading Card Game, started in beta.
The card game was fun, and I loved collecting, but the bugs and general lack of interest from the devs was getting to me. They were more interested in a card game to tie into Everquest. Someone I beat in the card game mentioned Eve to me. I thought at the time, nah, I'm still spending a lot of time playing this card game. But I was bit by the Eve bug and haven't turned back. I sold off my online cards (but still have a physical copy of the sets I collected). Let's just say, Eve keeps me busy and I'll be here for some time. |
