I am current training up electronic upgrades L5 for invention on my alt. As I am taking the time to train botgh this and electronics to L5, would it be worth while training up to use a covert op's frigate for low sec runs and scouting for my main?
This would not take much much of my training schedule and it may prove benficial. I may also train up to use T2 cloaking devices if I do do choose to train up for one. What are the main benfits of the T2 cloaking device over it's T1 variation?

Cov Ops ships are the best scouts in the game. Definitely worth the time if you plan to be in hostile space and don't want to be caught in a fight.
Train for the Cov Ops Cloak, otherwise you might as well just use any other ship with the t1 and t2 cloaks.

Absolutely yes if you intend to:
Travel unmolested through space Scan Probe systems Scout out enemy positions/movements.
One of the most useful ship classes I've flown, and definitely get the covops II cloak. --

Thanks for the very quick reply to the thread. I am already training towards this so will look into buying the Buzzard and the T2 covert op's cloaking device.

Yes - totally worth it. I just got one quite recently, and it's total ownage. Great for fleet-scouting/exploration/transproting high-valuestuff through lowsec/0.0, and also a great deal of fun to fly ======

in addition - should you ever be interested in using scan probes, you'll also love the superior bonus to astrometrics the covert ops frigates give ;)

How feasible is it to try to get past gatecamps in 0.0 with a cov ops as opposed to low sec?

Fairly straight forward. Some particularly competent gatecamps might be able to catch you, but never reliably. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

A Cheetah might be best for running bubble camps in 0.0.
As well as being a covops, it is the fastest one - attaining nearly interceptor speeds if you fit 2 overdrives in the lows with 3 mass reduction rigs.

wtb any t2 ship with 3 rig slots.
ie, the cheetah can only fit 2 mass reduction rigs.
but otherwise yes. Cheetah fast.

If thats the case, then would it also be worth while training up for black op ships? they seem to be a lot better again.

Do you mean Recon ships? Or do you actually mean Black Ops Battleships? Both are a good bit of training from a Cov Ops frigate and for completely different purposes and far far more money.
For a Cov Ops frigate you WILL need a Cov Ops cloak to make it worthwhile. A tech 2 cloak lets you move slightly faster while cloaked and has slightly less locking time penalty over a tech 1. BUT a Cov Ops cloak lets you warp while cloaked which is the Cov Ops real benifit.

There is this thing called a stealth bomber. Two of them and a t1 maller can kill a battlecruiser.
Three of them and a assalt frig can make things cry.
five of them will straight up embarrass someone.
So yes, worth it.

I personally use the covert ops frig all the time. with it i would train astrometrics to level 5 so that u can use the ferret probes if u want to find people hiding, my gang and i killed a drake, reaper, and a nighthawk recently because the probes scanned them out. if u plan on using it in low sec fit rigs to help you scan people out faster, however, if you plan on going to 0.0 with it i would fit speed rigs.

Not only is it a good idea, you would be insane not to do it. Did you know exploration and invention go hand-in-hand? Where do you think Decryptors come from? Interfaces? Racial Encryption skillbooks? They all come from exploration sites. It's a really groovy idea to train for Covert Ops and exploration if you invent. The skills are all very complimentary.

well i fly my helios for about 3 months in 0.0 and it never died. just use cloak, mwd, nanofiber and inertia stabs. best ship for transporting expensive stuff.

i'm not 100% sure of this but i think the pilgrim is the best 0.0 trader ship...fit lows with cargo expanders and a few istabs and you should be able to move a bit of modules at the same time escape pretty quick...just stay away from overdrives...

Good news is I am 2 days away from electronic upgrades L5 so will be able to continue my training for the covert ops initially. Then I can continue to training for a recon cruiser or black ops ship.
As for the covert ops cloaking device, I would not plan to use anything else on there. I like better cloaking devices more than standard issue, non- covert ops cloaking devices.

Not in the traditional sense. Good for scanning down ratters sitting at a safe spot. But any pirate worth his salt should be able to scan down belt ratters using just the system scanner.
Valuable, yes, 100% necessary, no. ---

To be fair, it's harder and harder to narrow that belt search down in 15 seconds without them having already warped to a safe spot. As the pirates and murderers got better so the victims became wiser. Needing a scan probe is becoming more and more 'necessary' as they continue to watch local. ---------

im training for this 2, can fly the ship just need level 4 of cloaking for the cov-ops cloak.
my plan is to use it to ship items in and out of o.o, to sell, and things i need.
although i somtimes wonder if a vigil with a prototype 2 cloak could have done the job nearly as well and saved me 15-20 days trainig

Annoyingly easy :D
You'll find interceptors and drone boats will MWD towards your position quickly, trying to get something within 2000m of your ship (to decloak you) but covert ops get a bonus to speed when cloaked.
Simply align, cloak and warp. Very hard to catch. Heck, unless the interceptor has a sensor booster, it wont even manage to target you (or is very unlikly to) before you've cloaked and warped.

Yeah. I also agree that given the problems with Amarr Blockade runner, the pilgrim has taken its place as best gatecamp running hauler. I hope ccp change pilgrim bonus from nos to cargo capacity so we Amarr can carry our shame with us.

Yes, covert ops is useful for many situations and worth training. Get a covert ops cloak if you can afford it to warp while cloaked.
Also, Jonny JoJo has a funny-shaped head.

Seems to be a very positive response to this thread. I'm glad everyone has had the opportunity to add to it. As a matter of fact i was planning to get into the covert ops before continuing invention training.
Please keep this going as i would still like your thoughts about covert ops. The possibilites seem to be endless.
