Outstrip the US for the first time in over 100 years.
First of all, as an American, I'd just like to send my congratulations across the pond. Well done.
Just to comment on the article itself, I had no idea that there was such a disparity for so long. Like many Americans I viewed Britain as a very wealthy (if small) Island nation, that had always had a very high standard of living. I was unaware just how far out in front we were in America, and how far behind you Brits were. Well, now that you have caught up, we can have an enjoyable and spirited economic competition!
Assuming we don't go and screw it all up by electing another Clinton to office this fall , and can flush out some of the socialists from our ranks, I'm sure America will be happily passing you up again. (Watch your backs! )
----------------------------------------- How much would it cost to roll back to RevII CCP?

Look. I'm here to just congratulate my UK pals. Leave the DailyKOS tinfoilhattery BS for another thread, I don't want mine locked.
(Oh, and in case you were wondering, I'm with Fred.)

Edited by: Zantrei Kordisin on 06/01/2008 05:34:48 The article is incorrect on one major part - GDP does not equal 'living standards'. Living standards are more appropriately measured by healthcare availability, education, wealth equality, access to food/water, access to entertainment and so on. It is quite likely that due to the massive wealth gap in the USA, that the UK (and France/Germany for that matter) has had better living standards this past century... Especially considering things like the 'slight' healthcare issues that there are in the USA.

Yeah, you've got sun and you'll have skin cancer by the time when you are in your 40's. Also, you have sharks on your beaches, have fun swimming in that. Good luck with that. I'd like to invite everybody to the Soviet Union (My Homeland) where there is no such thing as living standards :P

Silly silly silly... ours were, and should still be, called Marathons. I remember they were bigger, had more nuts and more caramel.. now we get the watered down american version, smaller, more expensive and less nuts. Sometimes its just best not to follow our cowboy cousins from across the pond.
PS: To the original op. Your economic downturn has nothing to do with Clinton. Thank Dubya, his dodgy economic policies, his ability to over borrow from the IMC and put the USA futher into debt now that it has ever been. Regardless of the next presidents political affiliation, it will take alot of extremely hard work and some very unpopular decisions to get you solvent again.

depends what is meant by living standards and how it's interpreted. you could mean development, which is hard to rate anyway, as whilst the USA has had a higher GDP than the UK for a long time, the UK has had a higher life expectancy than the USA for a long time too.
but yeah that was a pointless thing for me to say.

You also have EVE's DT in the middle of your playing prime time. This makes Australia someway behind Belize on the quality of life scale
$1 Snickers bar = rip off, I've never bought a Snickers for more than 45p before.
Its misleading to call GDP a study of quality of life. For one, it doesn't take account of the fact things are cheaper in the US than the UK (petrol, houses, luxury goods, etc). It doesn't take account that something like 1% of USA's population has 98% of the wealth (or somesuch similar) while the disparity is much less dramatic in the UK- this means that the "average wage" for an average person would be higher in the UK than in America, discounting those top 2 million people or so. It ignores the fact that the UK has higher taxes, and ignores what those taxes are spent on ("free" healthcare in the UK, massive military to fight foreigners for the US, or whatever). It ignores quality of employment (proportion of manual labour versus skilled labour, average weekly working hours, and so forth).
In other words, a measurement of GDP lets us compare nothing except who has the highest GDP ------

You said what I wanted to say but better, totaly agree, a better example of quality of life would be average life expectancy as this wagers in factors of not just public health care but also levels of stress (People in rich, developed countries suffer from stress and overwork which contributes to lower life expectancy).

Those aren't really good stats you guys are using there. Most people I've seen use the Human Development index as a better overall quality of living. Linkage Coincidently, Iceland appears at the top of the list, but the U.S. is above the U.K. by this measurement. - Eve IGB Store Template - The complete eve retail solution. |

have you ever posted the price breakdown or some summary of that broken arm bill? I did ask before and I am still curious about that. I had broken ribs in my accident, and the total cost was less than 2K and the car insurance covered that. 2K plus chiropractor visits I make on occasion.
