Hi, my name is Iam Widdershins. I am the current CEO of Project Nemesis, which many know to be a long-time respected small-scale PVP corporation, home to such heroes as Ten Tron and BossDrum. I am an EVE player of 4 years, a well-ranked PVPer and a lover of good fights be they in hisec, wspace, lowsec, or nullsec. I have a background in software & game testing, programming and design, and mathematics.
You may know me from my posts on BattleClinic's forums, my first and second threads summarizing the changes in the Crucible expansion in the weeks leading up to the release of the patch notes, or (more recently) some of my posts on /r/EVE. If you don't know me from these places, there's a decent chance I blew up you or someone you know.
I consider virtually any effort that contributes to improving EVE as a whole to be well spent. I have submitted 50+ bug reports to EVE's system, over a quarter of which were accepted as original submissions of problems that were previously undocumented.
I believe I could be a useful member of the 7th CSM.
~~~ I'm not going to make you read a ten thousand word dissertation of my views on EVE's development, future direction, and needs. I am perfectly willing to engage in discourse with anyone about my views and hopes, but for now I will give you a brief summary. I trust that my own direct answers to your questions and concerns will be easier to read than if you had to seek an answer in some 25-page-PDF magnum opus I uploaded.
My focus and perspective, summarized:I think the direction CCP took with the Crucible expansion is fantastic. Fixing extant bugs, peeves with the UI, and mechanics that just make us want to stab our monitors is a crucial process that not only makes existing gameplay better, but is an essential process to enable expanding the game into new areas and making more major changes that let the game continue to mature. I am very interested in seeing this trend continue and finish some of these left-behind features.
I would like to see a growing focus on improvements to the game's UI and its less visible mechanics; while recent changes have been excellent, I'd like to see more specific overview settings, general UI usability improvements, and a push for the re-write of the Crimewatch engine which handles all the aggression flags in the game.
I believe that EVE is built around conflict and risk. EVE is a risk-permeated wonderland, a PVP-saturated extravaganza fraught with risk & reward, and I want to see the future of EVE maintain this excitement and keep PVP in every area of the game. This does not mean we should make it easier for established PVPers to prey on the weak, any more than it should be easier for our carebears to completely avoid all harm in any security space. New Eden is not a tennis court, with strict boundaries of play and frequent breaks: it is a long and bloody beach with an unrelenting drive and no such thing as complete safety. That's what makes it so good: we should protect that however we can.
Along these lines, we should help foster mechanics that will drive small-scale PVP alongside large-scale. Not everyone wants to be involved in epic-scale fleet engagements, and a lot of people's computers/internet cannot even handle the strain. I believe everyone should be able to look to their left, look to their right, and find opportunities for good PVP on either hand wherever they are -- in the future, much as it is today. Hisec PVP is an extremely important and oft-overlooked aspect of this, because only in hisec can an aspiring PVPer learn by getting engagements with a limited number of opponents without CONCORD involvement. If PVP is reduced in hisec, the barrier for entry into PVP is raised dramatically.
If you have any questions about what I think about something or whether I would support a certain proposition, I will do my best to answer all comers.
My job as an internet spaceship politician:I'm not here to play at being a politician, garner internet fame or in-game notoriety, or do anything but work to improve the game as best I can. I don't pretend to be a great problem-solver, some kind of analytic powerhouse, or a great mediator of disputes. I am here to improve the core of the game, and I hope the rest of CSM7 can be productive adults as well.
I believe I am well-suited among the current candidates to contribute to future discussions, and my greatest honor would be to contribute in a meaningful way to the future of the game and its development.
I hope I have your support, and that of your friends.
Thanks. I'm not much into the jump freighter thing myself, it's a lot of time invested doing nothing for few to no A-grade fights, but it's a good work and Emizeko and his posse have it down to a science.
However, there are already a lot of space pants whose assets are already made and in the game (try searching "women's" in the market window), and I see no reason why those can't be released for our consumption.
When CCP finishes their V3 revamp of all the visuals in the game, I would not object to them putting one artist back on making content for the NEX... as long as it's hats. The TF2 hat economy is 50 million dollars a year, and hats are one of the only accessories available that would feature prominently in the portrait. I think people would buy them. Hell, I'd buy them.
But no, Flying In Space should never be ignored for the sake of spacepants or any other item of spaceclothing. |
This is why Widders will make a great member of the CSM. So many of the current CSM candidates seem to want to do it out of ego or political games, and while their platforms have been tailored around what people in game claim to want, after reading many of their posts, its clear that they don't understand game mechanics well enough to realize what this game needs.
You can vote for a CSM candidate who will promise you the EVE you think you want to play and things they can never deliver on because they're outside of the CSM's scope, or you can vote for someone who will give you a better and more playable EVE.
Remember, the key to being a good CSM is also their ability to suggest changes that can reasonably be implemented by CCP and won't break the system even further. I look at many of the highsec CSM candidates platforms and while their suggestions about highsec may be good for garnering votes its clear to me that if they were ever implemented, highsec carebear groups would be exploited even more than they are now. |
Hey, good question thanks.
I apologize if this is a disorganized answer, as I just started coming down with the flu from the flu shot I got like 10 hours ago (ain't that nice). Here we go.
Right now one of the largest new challenges facing young hisec wardeckers is the legitimization of alliance hopping, particularly to Dec Shield. Once your target jumps to Dec Shield, so does the war. In addition, the war does not immediately shut down as it did before: you can actually pay to continue it as long as you like. While this is good on the surface, the problem remains that the corporation will leave the alliance again in around 24 hours. If you are not on top of the ball with canceling the war, you will be completely unable to be at war with them again at best case for 24 hours due to the mechanics of voting (cannot put up a war if you have 3 or more, even if they are ending; cannot put up a war against a corporation or alliance you are already at war with; cannot vote to declare war on a corporation that is currently in an alliance).
Another tactic that used to be illegal that (I believe) is now allowed is completely dissolving your corporation, then re-forming it under the same name with the same people, ending the war for at least 48 hours (24 for the vote, 24 for the war to go live). While this leaves control towers and other corp-anchored assets abandoned, that is not a major problem for most carebear corps.
If your targets do not jump to an alliance to end your war or completely reform their corp, then you are no worse off than you were in '07; however, this is not to say that those mechanics were good either.
Joining and leaving corporations is fluid and easy for both sides, though it favors the aggressor, who is prepared to engage by already having no roles, and perhaps not even starting out in the corporation that is at war. Joining and leaving corporations at any time is fully sanctioned by senior GM staff, as long as you go through a very basic and minimal process; currently, the bare minimum amount of time to be in the corporation is 15 seconds. While these tactics are fun for the aggressor and can provide surprise ganks against reticent targets, they seem reasonable more and more in ruling only, and the rules that allow this have only been fully clarified by the GMs in the last year or so.
Changes I would probably like to see:
There have been various suggestions for changes to mechanics that will force members of corporations to remain in their corporation, or at least not be allowed to leave, that seem to be heading in the right direction conceptually. I think a model where only the aggressors are allowed to leave their corporation and only those who were declared upon are allowed to recruit could be successful, as long as the corp that was declared upon is forbidden to hop to an alliance for the duration of the war through forced game mechanics. The corp that is set upon would be allowed to hire free-roaming mercs to fight for them, and the aggressors would not be able to grow in numbers; the biggest problem the set-upon would have is scammers and enemy AWOXers being recruited. (I do not think this should allow or disallow recruitment or expulsion of corporations from alliances that are at war, but I do think that there needs to be a better notification of acceptance to an alliance so that all parties know when it will happen. Lots of people die because they suddenly find themselves in alliance at war while they are travelling, just as the 24h timer finishes.)
However, this also holds its own problems. Whenever I come up with a change to game mechanics, I think to myself: How could I exploit this to ruin someone's day? That is my calling in EVE, and I have spent years practicing it.
For instance, with a rule like this, I could recruit mission runners to a corporation that is having war declared upon it; they would then be unable to leave, ever, and I could grief them straight out of the game for a few paltry million isk a week! There should therefore be a way for you to forcibly leave a corporation that on a long timer, say 4 or 6 days, notifying your corporation members and their war targets. Corporation recruitments on behalf of the aggressive corporation could perhaps also be similarly delayed, say 24 hours with (again) a notification to both groups that the timer is beginning when the recruitment is set in motion.
Always remember! Any condition in a game mechanic can be exploited in your favor. You can meet any guidelines; if you were allowed to leave a corporation immediately when you're getting teamkilled while at war, then corporations could immediately be dissolved by just blowing up their own members in shuttles. When someone offers a proposal, always think about the worst thing you could possibly do to someone with that change in place.
I also think that corporations should be able to declare war on other groups while they have less than three ACTIVE wars, not less than three wars in any state whatsoever. If you declare war on an alliance and it collapses two corps at a time for a whole week, you cannot declare war on any of those corporations because you've always got three items on the list. This is counterintuitive to the way alliance wars work, where wars that are already ending do not count towards the total cost of adding a new one.
In short:
Hard restrictions on the movement of corporations that are at war, long-timer restrictions on joining and leaving for the aggressors and the victims respectively, and lots of notifications for when when timers begin and corps join warring alliances. |
I just came up with this as I was going along. I have not really sat down to think about this in-depth before, but I have given it some thought on the side. I believe that, alongside some easier-to-use mechanics to securely ransom the corporation that's being aggressed, this could really make war-declarations in hisec something extremely useful and eliminate the corp-hopping issue almost entirely. Wars should really be an honest brawl between two competing corporations, and coming up with the mechanics to foster that environment is difficult. I don't know if this is the best way to do it, but it's a start.
I am very interested and very much anticipating what CCP is planning for fixing the war system; I hope it is something similar to this, or that they read that post and take it into consideration. There's a lot that could be improved, and there's a lot that could go horribly wrong if this isn't done right; if there is something to be exploited to use the mechanic to your advantage, EVE's players (including us in Project Nemesis) will be all over it in a flash.
That's the kind of insight I like to bring to a discussion. |
That's the kind of insight I like to bring to a discussion. This speaks volumes.
I've seen Widders gracefully navigate EVE's mechanics with unmatched efficiency. If broken mechanics are going to be fixed properly, you need someone with the ability to see how things are going to be exploited, and the desire to make changes that are for the better of the game and not personal interests.
Iam has both of these qualities. I don't always post on the forums, but when I do, I post with my main. |
I support Iam Widders for CSM. Having played EvE for almost 9 years, I started my career in empire and graduated to 0.0 like everyone else. I have the unique experience of turning back around to empire as many of our veteran players do. I believe Iam knows first hand what causes this 0.0 decent and will work hard to reinvigorate the desire to pvp in all locations again.
While I love what I do in empire, wormholes and low sec, I long to return again to 0.0 but many changes would have to occur before it would be worthwhile. Iam has the right ideas and desire to push for those changes.
So, you could either vote for someone that thinks 0.0 is perfect and wants it kept that way, or you can vote for someone who believes pvp is the forefront of eve and should be equally feasible everywhere.
otherwise i am for your empire war dec changes. I also think that is an excellent idea, and goes along naturally with the changes I already listed. Nobody would like being stuck in a corp because they weren't aware that it was going to be in a war. The UI for finding out who is at war with whom is cumbersome, and it takes upward of thirty seconds to list a corporation's wars even if you do it all the time. +1 for this suggestion, and I would absolutely support something like this for a final draft.
Also, they mega-trolled my terrible former CEO EthanPow, for which I am forever grateful.
Definitely have my support. Thank you so much, I actually gave you an ovation right here at my desk. That is absolutely what I seek to accomplish with my gameplay in EVE. Long ago when I wasn't sure if I wanted to destroy other peoples' stuff all day, this is the thought process that led me to deciding for it anyway. EVE is a game that we play because it's fun, and if you are frustrated at dying so much, a real EVE player should be able to take their experiences as a trial-by-fire, learn from their mistakes, and get back on their feet to succeed as they were never able to before.
We are the challenge that makes you learn, the hardship that can strengthen you, the harsh and alcoholic kung-fu master of EVE. Many of our students drop out or fail to learn the lesson, but hearing that some of them do warms my heart.
You can vote for a CSM candidate who will promise you the EVE you think you want to play and things they can never deliver on because they're outside of the CSM's scope, or you can vote for someone who will give you a better and more playable EVE.
CCP advertises with "EVE is real". This is real - real life politics. Just go ahead and ask a local politician what ACTA is for example. I don't proclaim myself allknowing of all content and implications a political career (how big or small it is) entail or the votes they cast - but sometimes it seems they have no idea.
I for my part am sure, back on topic here, that the OP has clear idea of those. I thusly fully endorse this product/service. +1 vote for Iam Widdershins...
Perhaps you need to rewrite it again, then. It's still not at all clear that you are talking about anything other than disabling stront.
I think the simple solution is to make leaving an alliance at war take a full 48 hours, some 6 hours longer than a full strontium cycle. I agree that leaving alliances to save your hisec POS is a terrible mechanic, but I really think you should come up with some actual methods to accomplish the things you say you want to before people should take you seriously. I'm not just concerned with the people that run from wars, either; I freely admit that we have also engaged in a fair amount of corp-hopping to kill war targets minutes or even a few handfuls of seconds after joining, entirely within the allowable mechanics currently vetted by CCP. As one is a direct response to the other, I think that both should be solved at once, providing a much more meaningful and rewarding experience for both sides. If you feel like I'm all politically correct, you clearly haven't met me (that's fine I guess). I'm sure quite a lot of people can tell you, I can be a real ragey ***** when I **** something something up myself and lose a spaceship in a completely avoidable way. I used to be a lot less pissed off about losing **** because it'd be like "oh... how does that work? WTF? I didn't know that. Dammit. I wonder if I can kill someone using that..." and nowadays it's basically "OH FFS I COULD SEE THIS COMING FIVE MINUTES OFF" -- though I'm basically just pissed at myself.
I don't even care if I get on killmails. Combat records are what they are, and they are inherently inaccurate representations of your achievements in PVP. As long as something dies, it doesn't matter to me whether I got the killmail, though it is a bit more fun if you were able to do it solo. (Ask Killer. "Ok, I'll just jump in and push him through to you guys in case he wakes up and MWDs to the gate... ok point...he's......uh............he's down lol")
Inside the game, I play (and encourage my corpmates to play) for maximum grief. I've done terrible, terrible things to people and their misbegotten spaceships and loved it. Trolling and killing and unapologetic theft; everything goes under the EULA. This was one of my favorite chatlogs to date, and my favorite altcorp is the one where the CEO resigned and gave the roles to me when I teamkilled everyone in it (after taking his recruitment bonuses). My ideal day in EVE is to gain some poor sap's trust, clean out his corp hangar, and blow up like 3 billion isk in mining ships with a Breacher. At that point I don't even care if anything dropped.
I always try to troll someone by default. If they're mad about their loss and start smacking about it, double down! Those are the best kind of chat logs. Otherwise I guess you can just GF or give them some vague suggestions, or even try to double down on the scam and then explain to them how they messed up later.
I feel that doing all this is fine and good because any real EVE player should be able to take the experience of getting horribly stomped on and learn from it. There should be no such thing as 'griefing' in EVE: things that are considered 'griefing' anywhere else are legitimate gameplay in EVE. It's a risky game, and it's your own damn responsibility to find out how these things work: this is nice and cheap early on. Anything under allowed game mechanics goes; saying that something is dishonourable or unfair because you can't figure out how to win is like saying that medics in TF2 are for losers who are too **** to win without them. If you're at war, you should know about it already or someone should tell you: there's a big message if you're already in the corp. If you shoot canflippers... you just shot someone. That's literally begging for a fight. Any time you die in EVE it is 100 percent your fault, and if you can't take something away from any given loss and learn something from it, you aren't exactly fit for the game.
If there are game mechanics that allow you to totally gank people with no counter or sacrifice, then those mechanics obviously need fixing. For instance, if CCP had no problem with joining a corporation while you're in space targeting someone and then blowing them up because now you're at war, that would be a broken mechanic. You can actually do this without being CONCORDed (though it is considered a petitionable exploit), which is definitely something that should be fixed. In my opinion, you have to petition something someone did for using a game mechanic (like this) that totally works but is still disallowed, that mechanic needs work.
To me, EVE's victory condition is that you be the last person who still has a ship. Sure, you can get the credits to scroll by going to the last tab of the ESC menu (same way you win Animal Crossing: City Folk by going to the basement of the museum between 8pm and midnight every Saturday... oh god) but you can only truly win EVE when you stand atop a mountain of corpses and burning wreckage and self-destruct the game's last Sleipnir.
That is to say, EVE never ends. Every day you play you should learn something new, and if necessary act on it.
If that doesn't make me seem terrible enough, come hit me up on EVE Voice or some ****. I'll try to tone the gay jokes down to the point where information transfer is possible. Representing experience and reason in CSM 7 |
huja wrote:What do you think about sec status and neutral logistics in high sec? 'Sec status' is a bit of a broad topic, and I'm not really sure what kind of issue you mean to ask about. I'm not aware of any major issues with the way it works unless you are referring to Jack Dant's "what happens in lowsec stays in lowsec" proposal -- in which case I think that's a great idea.
Neutral logistics on the other hand I can tell you all about. For the sake of brevity I'll refer to all remote assistance -- tracking links, remote repair, remote sensor boosters, remote ECCM -- as 'logistics.'
I have fought many times with and without neutral logistics, mostly without; I have fought groups that have in-corp logistics, neutral logistics, and no logistics at all.
The split of opinions on neutral logistics in hisec is, in 99% of cases, between the haves and the have-nots (either friends or alts, it makes no difference). Most people that have them think they are pretty dang good, bring them along quite frequently, and some of them will use them to fight damn near anything. They are much more convenient and less scary when they are not in the same corporation (as they should be -- two logis are less inherently dangerous than two Tempests in most every situation).
Most people who don't have logistics seem to feel that they are dishonourable, a cheat, inherently unfair, and even an exploit -- and that they should be completely abolished. Even some pilots from groups that DO have heavy logistics think this way, in most recent memory some pilots from NOIRdot, who as a mercenary corporation usually has no problem with flooding local with excessive numbers and scaring away all their potential targets.
Many of these same people will then gladly run hisec incursions for their isk. If you don't see why this is ironic, well, I'll get to that.
EVE's population is aging and growing in number; more and more of them are able to fly some pretty nice ships, including Logistics class cruisers. With the introduction of Incursions, these ships went from purely a PVP thing except for maybe some guys who ran high level complexes with some extra alts to an essential staple of one of the most desirable PVE occupations in the game. Dedicated logistics ships are becoming ever-increasingly common and prevalent, and that's just something we've got to come to grips with.
Many people feel butthurt about getting killed in what they expected to be an honourable 1v1 when suddenly scimitar... even though they should know what to expect from the people they are fighting, and could often find out with a little basic research. That is perhaps understandable, though they should probably realize that they are mostly complaining about their own lack of planning. This is where most of the complaints come from.
Some people feel like their small groups are getting killed unfairly by a silly-small number of people just because they are made "invincible" by logistics. This is a flawed perception, because there is plenty that they could be doing to win anyway. Say you've got 5 guys fighting 2 guys 20km off the front of the Rens undock. It's a pretty big station, so let's use that. Everything seems easy until two Guardians light up on the station and suddenly your primary is healthily repping right back up again; you're not doing any damage. What could you possibly do?
Well, you can't defeat them by brawling, so the answer is Ewar. You can jam them with ECM. If they are pretty close, you can shoot them to dock them up/distract them, or neut them. You can switch your primary often, which is difficult for the logi to cope with. If the logistics are like 50-70km away at the back of the station (as is pretty common), you can damp them. If you really damp them hard, you can get a logistics' max targeting range under 25km without much difficulty. You might even be able to draw the fight away from the logistics, getting them out of rep range. If you come well-rounded instead of just fit for generic gangbang, you can make fighting a group that has any kind of remote reps pretty feasible with equal numbers (including the logi).
All this is under the current mechanics. Some people will stick their fingers in their ears and shout that this is not good enough, they want neutral logi GONE. How do you want to do this exactly?
Do you want to make it impossible to rep anyone who's not in your corporation/alliance? No more incursions, I guess. Ok, make it alright to rep strangers as long as they aren't aggressed to anyone? There goes joint wars.
Back in the day, up until the weeks shortly after Incursion, giving someone any kind of remote assistance was an act of implicit trust. They were presumably trusting you to help them out and you were trusting them to not 'go global' or get you ganked by some nefarious dudes. When people began to introduce pick-up groups of random neutrals for running incursions rather than forming corporations of people they trusted, absolute mayhem ensued. Logistics and shiny battleships with energy transfers on were going GCC left and right. I wondered to myself, why can't these people find a group that they trust and just stick to them? That's what the game has always been about, not trusting total strangers with the safety of your 200-3000 million isk ship.
CCP "patched" this in two or three steps. First, reps automatically turn off for CONCORD. Sigh. I guess that might be alright. Next they start making reps turn off for ANY player aggression, and it is now almost impossible to use logistics, either in or out of your corporation, in any large fight in high security space. Every time the person you are repairing begins shooting someone new, your reps turn off. When you turn your reps back on, your buddy's capacitor transfers turn off. It's a nightmare tale of consequences outside a mechanic's stated intention, and I've experienced it first-hand. Representing experience and reason in CSM 7 |
I agree with a lot of what you said but I take issue with the side about incursion bears. Incursions were made for pickup groups to form and for people to be able to fly with folks outside their own circle, if they so chose to do. Wardec mechanics have pretty well stopped any incursion-bound corp dead in its tracks.
Would you consider a slight alteration of 'not all rules are universal' in that the rules within an incursion for logistics CHANGES from those in normal hisec. This would leave the incursions their safeties and yet not have that cascade of power off reps off that you spoke of, above, in normal space.
Iam Widdershins wrote:(continued)It may be slightly outside the scope of this discussion, but I don't like these changes. I think that they are having a hurtful impact on high-security PVP, and I think that CCP is responding far too vigorously to complaints of griefing in incursions. I believe that it is not CCP's place to protect people from consequences of putting the trust of their most valuable assets into the hands of strangers they have barely talked to; if CCP had just played it chill and given it some time, incursions would work differently: People would form more tight-knit communities of incursion-bears who actually form corporations and closely bonded groups that have to rely on each other for their safety and income. That is, they would do it the way they've done it in all other areas of EVE since time-immemorial.*snip* Neutral logistics play an important role in the game and they are one of the more interesting things to work with in hisec PVP: the better your research, the more you can anticipate from your enemy, even though local is FULL of neutrals. They do not make anyone invincible, and they are literally the only way to possibly win certain fights. They are here to stay. *snip* The dock/jump timer on the logistics ship should only be as high as the dock/jump timer of the ship it is repairing; once that ship can dock, so can the logistics. If the logistics turns off its reps early, then he can dock 60 seconds after he's done. Great! This forces logistics ships to be more mobile and self-sufficient instead of cap-recharge monsters with maximum reps that nobody bothers to shoot because they are too far away: if anything goes wrong, that logistics could have to fend for itself for a whole minute. This should serve as a viable solution to both complaints, without breaking anything new.
Valid.
Dont want to sound like I'm kissing ass here, but those points summarise my PoV perfectly. I personally own a logistics alternate, and have had too many great moments/kills/fights to ever think of giving her up (yes, i refer to it as a 'she').
This would leave the incursions their safeties and yet not have that cascade of power off reps off that you spoke of, above, in normal space. For the first point, I have a different perspective on the matter. Just because CCP made a bunch of changes turning them into a viable Pick Up Group mechanic (finally, after a large amount of grief, and at the expense of other important game mechanics) does not strictly mean that they should be a PUG thing. When I sit back and imagine even hisec incursions being a serious business of tight-knit hisec raider groups, I like what I see.
As for changing the way logi work only in incursion systems... words that come to mind for a mechanic like that are 'deceptive' and 'complicated' -- 'deceptive' isn't the right term, but it's the feeling I get. Having two totally different sets of mechanics for remote assistance in different areas of space seems like a recipe for brain-melt in young PVPers as they try to cope with exploitation on the part of experts. That's the feeling I get.
Yes, I make it my mission in life to kill people and take their things utilizing parts of the game they don't understand. I'm a terrible person, and if you gave me a marauder to T2 rig for you I would keep it. That is why I am a good option to represent the actual actions of the players to CCP: both the scammers and "griefers" and what they do, as well as the poor saps who get scammed and killed because the game simply isn't clear or logical enough.
Mike Azariah wrote:Seeing as you are running, Iam, I could turn it back to you and ask what your prroposals were . . . are you looking to make Concord less or more active as a police force?
I just want it to make sense and to make the graded scale of security mean more than response time for Concord to react. m Hmmmmm. I think that CONCORD as it stands is a pretty basic mechanic, and it's there to enforce an order into hisec and restrict the scope of combat there (12:14:28 Combat CONCORD Police Commander lightly hits you, doing 185893.0 damage.) This is what sets it apart from lowsec, and I'm certainly not wanting to change that.
CONCORD is the 50-billion-volt electric fence that separates allowable PVP from disallowed PVP (except suicide ganking, which I guess is an electricity fetish). The only thing changing the strength of CONCORD response will change is what ships are viable for suicide ganking; everything else is a matter of choosing what you should and should not be allowed to shoot. Changing this in different security levels seems like another added complication to hisec PVP mechanics, which as I've mentioned before are already dizzyingly complex.
If you have any ideas you had in mind, though, I'd love to hear them.
My response to this is, that sounds pretty cool. If it's implemented well, it could be awesome: go for it CCP, but take it slow. Things like this are easy to screw up, but you've done it well once before. Representing experience and reason in CSM 7 |
(5) Have you read Malcanis's High Sec Manifesto? What are your opinions? (1) I am on the side that Vanguards are too easy to blitz for too high a payout (way more money in those than Assaults ), and that mechanics protecting Pick Up Groups as a viable mechanic need to be revisited. Enough organizational infrastructure exists at this point to provide a relatively smooth transition back to players providing each other a relatively safe environment to run hisec incursions.
(2) Local chat? Being able to view who is in local with you at any given time is very important, in hisec as it is in lowsec and nullsec. Wspace is its own animal, and the lack of a local listing interplays wonderfully with the difficulty and unpredictability of getting in and out of system. As for the chat part, local chat and smack is a wonderful tool and I really cannot imagine how boring the game would be without it. It may be a cumbersome mechanic server-side but I love it.
I assume by 'cloak detection' you mean a mechanic to remove yourself from the local list. I am not strictly against this, but the main question you need to ask when considering something like this is not how do you want it to be used but how will it be abused. And oh boy is there a lot of potential for abuse in something like that. If someone comes up with a solid and well-rounded proposal for something like this, I'd love to see it and it could be a very cool addition to the game; until then, I don't mind the way things are now.
(3) Off-grid boosters are pretty cool, and have a really strong and important impact on fleet fights (but they absolutely do not make anyone invincible). With the introduction of T3 boosters and then T2 links they've been getting stronger and stronger, and this has been making them increasingly prevalent.
Boosters should always be able to function off-grid, but if they are made weaker when they aren't on-grid that'd probably be fine. I've also heard CCP Soundwave talking of making T3 ships with the warfare linking subsystem being made less specialized and more rounded (perhaps by giving them smaller bonuses to more than one kind of link), and returning Fleet Command ships to their former role as badasses of the sky when it comes to a specific kind of links.
(4) NPC corps already come with an 11% tax. This could be raised, but it's a pretty big drawback already. I think creating a corporation could be made more expensive, but the cost of making your own corp is often loneliness.
My proposals for changes to wars already make it more difficult to leave a corporation that is at war, and I think this is attacking the problem more directly.
(5) I am totally in agreement with his assessment of the current state of hisec. It is rare for someone to actually tell it like it is with regards to the Happy Rainbow Carebear Zone in the middle of our EVE: there's a lot of PVP there, and that's the way it should be.
Some of his suggestions for increasing the differentiation between security levels are interesting. I am not strictly against them, but I would lend a word of caution not to make them too complicated.
I agree that wars and bounties need a serious makeover, and I'm looking forward to seeing what CCP does with them in their upcoming expansion (which will apparently have a focus on that!). He has some very good concepts for what could be added to revitalize those mechanics, but he is very general in his description; the difficult part is in coming up with actual mechanics that could incorporate these ideas without being exploitable. That is where my interest comes in: I would love to work on proposals to flesh out ideas like these.
His third point, developing high-risk vs high-reward gameplay in high-sec space is perhaps not what I would like. I think that that is the kind of thing that needs to be saved for lowsec, which is desperately in need of a revitalizing spark itself.
An example of this I WOULD like to see, however, is PVE areas directly related to and having an impact on player-instigated wars in high security space. Now THAT could be interesting, as long as it was (again! always!) not exploitable by people who want to do only that. Representing experience and reason in CSM 7 |
Thanks for the answers. I was a little surprised by some. Just to clarify..
Other than some adjustment to lower the payout on Vanguards, you're largely supportive of High Sec Incursions as they are now? You wouldn't support removal of Incursions from High Sec, removal of Concord protection from Incursions in High Sec systems, or a means for players to side with the Sansha against Incursion runners?
The ability to use a T3 booster that is virtually unprobable and that aids in a fight while it is largely immune from hostilities is a good thing?
Oh and to clarify one of my original questions.. it was in relation to the last CSM minutes where both removing/changing Local Intel and a means of detecting Cloaked ships was brought up by CCP. I see you're against changing Local Chat Intel, what about a means to detect Cloaked ships? |
I'm supportive of Incursions as they exist now with the caveat that I'd like to see it become dangerous to assist strangers again. I believe that pick-up groups are not the best thing for the game.
The ability to use a T3 booster that is virtually unprobable and that aids in a fight while it is largely immune from hostilities is a very expensive thing. I would definitely support making gang links cause you to be easier to probe down to give pilots outside high security space better tools to counter their use.
I don't think I would support a mechanic that gave the ability to decloak cloaked ships unless 1. it is relatively short-ranged (say 20km or so), 2. it takes a long time to wind up (say 30 seconds), and 3. it's not possible to use it in a rolling-thunder effect where you can immediately decloak every single recon that comes through a gate.
In fact, I don't see much of a reason to include it at all. The ability to cloak up at a safespot is key to the gameplay of a lot of people (who know how to survive out in 0.0 but don't want to have to set up a goldang pos everywhere they go -- I support the nomadic lifestyle), and fitting a cloak already comes with some pretty significant drawbacks. Anything else useful seems like it would allow for the creation of even MORE deadly gatecamps than the ones we are already seeing, gatecamps that can kill pretty much anything that comes through using a combination of bubbles, high scan resolution, and decloaking pulses. Not exactely on topic, here's some ideas I've been throwing around regarding following quote (highly experimental stage in thought)
NetheranE wrote:What would you say as to the addition of more T3 style ships?
Just throwing around idea here but I really like that idea. Unless they introduce more subsystem skills - that is. I'd for example love to see some kind of heavy drone platform for Amarr (go fix those damn amarrian drones CCP >.< - we are the second best droneusers by fluff and the worst by fact), as it stands the best drone ships are either of gallantean or pirate design. Missiles for Amarr (Assault Optimization - hurdur ), guns for Caldari, maybe missiles for Min (the Hardpoint Efficiency configuration is one of the worst subsystems as it currently is I think). Other possible ideas would be capsized weapaons on BS' (not sure that could be made to work, probably not though), moving systems generally around (I think a subsystem that gives heavy neut-power should be an offensive subsystem, cause you mainly will mount neuts/nos' anyway, while cloaking seems more like a computational/engineering problem then one of weaponlayout (which could rectify their general underperformance, and would make the HAM sub for the Legion viable too)).
even more brainmelting content Hell - they could go totally through the roof and itterate on the factions more if they do something like T3 BS'. Taking the Khanid for example - they would provide ample reason for a good Missile sub, maybe even for a Shield sub seeing as how they are the closest of all EvEs factions to the Caldari State.
I'm pretty sure Soundwave and his team probably merge to form into some kind of genius game design team when coming up with new content, and while I would be able to provide useful criticism to their ideas, I don't claim to have it all figured out. People get paid large amounts of money to do that. Sure, there are a lot of things they COULD do, but there aren't currently a lot of different roles that battleships or Frigates fill. Cruisers are God's favorite ship class, and that's where all the useful ships live, so T3 cruisers were a bit easier to design, but going into Battleships is dangerous territory and I honestly can't be assed to come up with something that will surely end up being stupid.
Most of the posts in ships & modules, of people talking about all the cool stuff ships could do... 99% of them are just TERRIBLE ideas, ideas that make me want to beat my head against a wall. I'm not going to be that guy here.
Neither do I claim to be able to design balanced ships that could find their nich+¬. The main problem here is - I think - that a lot of ships allready aren't used at all (or hardly). So far I have seen a grand total of 2 EWar frigates in my EvE playing time (which is only 5 months but still) - but hundreds of Canes, Drakes and Machs and a good score of Harbys, Myrms, Curses etc.
I can remember having seen design concepts for a T3 in the "Design a ship"-contest. It didn't even make finals (it didn't look that great but still far superior to some of the other concepts). I believe CCP could/would figure T3 BS' out - but it would still be nice to have some kind of variation to the standart pattern of Amarr=Armor/Lasers (Caldari=Shield/Missiles and so forth) as well as having a justification for all subs they give us (Hardpoint Efficiency configuration here again - no justification to use it at all whatsoever).
Regarding ships&modules - I don't even read that anymore. Most of the people crying, I mean criticising stuff in there sound as if they can't even see 2 steps ahead of them. I accept your point of view on no discussion. After all this is your thread - not mine, and not about T3. |
Just kidding on that last one. I realized that I should clarify something for you guys today, as well. I read Alekseyev Karrde's first Q&A post (he's a cool guy):
Alekseyev Karrde wrote:Thanks to CSM6, the CSM has much better utilized the stakeholder status earned by CSMs past. Instead of championing specific fixes, proposals, and buffs CSM7 will be plugged into CCP's actual development cycle and be on-hand to give feedback on what CCP is actually planning on doing to help them get it right and steer them away from potential disasters.
So no, I don't have any specific fixes or pet issues. There really wouldn't be any point. What I do have is intimate knowledge of small fleet PVP dynamics and how proposed ship balance or mechanics changes will affect them. If say Electronic Attack Ships or Black Ops came up as a ship balance priority (and I hope they do), instead of handing CCP a post or a set of crunched numbers on how to buff their stats I'll talk with Soundwave + his team + the other CSM reps about how they work well, where they fall short, and if the proposed direction of the buffs is a good one that goes far enough.
tl;dr Spec proposals and backseat developing are a thing of the past. Vote for candidates not a specific fix they claim they can deliver for you. Eloquently put. This is absolutely true. I am not here claiming to march down to CCP HQ, armed and armored, ready to stuff some fixes down CCP's throat for you. I'm here to tell you what kinds of things I think would be beneficial to the game, and more importantly WHY I think so. I don't consider myself to be "the hisec candidate," "the wardec candidate," or "the griefer candidate" (lol). I'm a dude who is apparently damn good at the kinds of things that will be asked of the CSM in the future, and based on what people are telling me I guess I am moreso than the majority of the current CSM candidate list. Most of the questions and discussion I've had so far has been related to hisec wars; this is partially because I've been categorized as that guy, and partially because I have an expertise in the matter and am not afraid to say so.
The reason I am telling you ideas about things I'd like to see, and why those posts are really really long, is because I'm demonstrating to you the way that I process things and the reasoning that goes into my decisions. If you want to look for a good CSM candidate, you should look for someone who has a lot of knowledge in the area, isn't a stuck up butt about it, and has a willingness to learn coupled with a strong ability to reason and analyze new information without. In the CSM process, we the players are hiring volunteer game design advisors. That is exactly what is going on, and those are the qualities you should look for. I am not misrepresenting the pattern of use of declarations of war, in fact I have done extensive research into the goings on surrounding highsec declarations of war.
Furthermore, do not accuse me of being an GÇ£endless wellspring of terriblenessGÇ¥ and do not apply this blanket statement to corporations being repeatedly wardecced for a plethora of reasons. There is no shadow-clan of hundreds of members who are constantly moving and constantly oppressing your pilots; if there were, and that's what I did, I'm sure I could get a seat on the CSM with very little effort.
PVP in these alliances gets boring pretty fast, and I encourage my own pilots (currently PRONS has only about a dozen active pilots) to get some small and interesting wars of their own going. They are free to move about as they wish, but I do not know of ANYONE who "corp hops continually to escape any meaningful revenge." If I saw someone doing that, I would boot them immediately. Meaningful revenge is what we're seeking out more than anything else. We want fights, wherever we can get them.
Getting blueballed is a win for nobody; that is the reason why we will move about often. The people Iam Widdershins flies with are, more often then not, in posession of an employment history that has them in one corporation for a month or so before moving on, how is that not corp hopping? You are ragey and you're jumping to conclusions.
If you clicked Show Info on random people more, you'd notice that the majority of the actual active players in EVE have corporation histories that look basically like this. 4 different corporations in your history is NOTHING. If you don't move out to 0.0 and bring all your assets with you, you're a lot more free to move around and spend time with different people without worrying about losing all your stuff.
Just because you've been fanatically loyal to a total of two corporations since your join date in 2009 does not mean that anything else is abnormal, suspicious, or in any way wrong. If you think that maybe changing corporations every 1-4 months is an exploit and counts as corp-hopping, I don't know of anything that can save you. Representing experience and reason in CSM 7 |
You are making unsubstantiated and untrue claims that the people who create hardship in the game are driving people out of it. You are also misrepresenting the state and the common usage patterns of war declarations, which are a valid and intended game mechanic. It is cumbersome, ineffective, and generally a huge waste of time to grief someone out of the game even if you want to. If someone actually bothers to target you with continued wardecs, it's because you're actively making it worth their while with your endless wellspring of terribleness.
I call GÇ£ bull+++tGÇ¥ on that statement. On all of it. For one: you cannot honoustly claim here you have kept track of the people that you have had wardecced, and certainly you have not been able to keep a running tally of GÇ£ThanksGÇ¥ versus quits. It is YOU who blames the other for being GÇ£mind-blowingly incompetent to begin withGÇ¥ and in that statement is packed the highsec PVP elitist stance every other serious PVPer spits on. I never claimed that people who create hardship in EVE are driving people out of EVE. I claim that targeted and continual GÇ£griefingGÇ¥ declarations of war on younger corporations cost EVE players that might have developed into valuable additions to the EVE comunity without that pressure. I am not misrepresenting the pattern of use of declarations of war, in fact I have done extensive research into the goings on surrounding highsec declarations of war. Furthermore, do not accuse me of being an GÇ£endless wellspring of terriblenessGÇ¥ and do not apply this blanket statement to corporations being repeatedly wardecced for a plethora of reasons. It highlights your one sided view of the goings on as well as advertises your ignorance and lack of empatic ability for any playstyle but your own. Iam Widdershins wrote: You say that it might be darwinism, but that people want to enjoy the game too. Well, people play EVE because the enjoyment comes from succeeding at a game which is hard. Very few people would actually want that, despite what they say. You are hereby stating that you don't listen to people because they mean the exact opposite of what they say? I would hate to come across you in a bar and have you apply that logic to me when I say GÇ£No, I would rather not partake in that helping of rainbow manlove you so kindly offered.GÇ¥. Also, making EVE harder does not translate directly in a feeling of succeeding when you cease piling on the GÇ£hardshipGÇ¥. Even though you seem to think so. Iam Widdershins wrote: Well then, you're in luck. One of my most iterated points in my argument is that the game should not allow people to be repeatedly griefed with nothing for them to do about it. If a game mechanic allows a loophole for people to do this, it needs to be closed. Forcing people out of the game is a bad plan for all its players and for CCP, and I do not endorse it in any way. If you happen to be the one that kills someone and it's the final straw for them to quit, 999 times out of a thousand that person was already on their way out. People will blame their quitting on anything as an alternative to admitting that they were stupidly betting their entire fortune on one weak and undefended ship. You seem to be of the belief that quitting EVE happens in a rage over a single loss that breaks the camel's back. Two words for you: asset denail. If a fledgeling player is forced to eat excrement for two months they will think twice before renewing that subscription. I'd like to answer this whole post, briefly and succinctly.
You are blaming regular and normal subscription loss, attributable to people becoming involved with daily life and getting bored with hashing over terrible sovereignty mechanics and doing the same boring thing day after day, on incidental wars that you saw happen in high-security space. What I am saying is exactly the opposite of what you claim: quitting eve DOES NOT occur over a single loss, it's something that builds up over time. When a player realizes that they just lost something, they think about what it takes to earn that back, and then they think about the place they were at before they lost it: if that place isn't very good, then perhaps it is their own corpmates and alliance who are to blame for their leaving the game. 'The same terrible crap they have to deal with every day' is a much more reasonable response than 'that one enemy they had to fight a lot.'
Everything else in your post is spewing hate and rage over your personal inability to cope with the realities of the game. I don't even like the Privateers model, continually coming back to the same 50 nullsec alliances to war them again. I'm not the guy you should be talking to. Moar Tears fills a niche. The very same niche that Crimson Federation and 0rphanage fill(ed). It's not a new, unique or particularly notable gimmick, other than they have been known for some pretty high profile kills. Making him out to be a villain because you dislike his gimmick isn't the best way to go about derailing him.
You can go that well enough by challenging his signature line.
That said, having someone who regularly pushes highsec war mechanics to great ends could be valuable in upcoming discussions about lowsec and highsec changes that will surely be a focus in at least one of the next 2 expansions.
He's definitely not top 7 material, but if Widdershins sticks to his area of expertise and becomes an advocate for sensible highsec mechanic changes in regards to CRIMEWATCH, aggression, global criminal flags, wardecs, bounties and kill rights he could be invaluable when the time comes. |
That's not correct. I look at the candidates individually for their strengths and encourage the ones who may have unique perspectives to share.
CSM 5 shared a terrible groupthink complex when it came to topics that they had little to no experience with, which led to fiascos like the jump bridge changes. Those changes spurred the nullsec blocs to pack the CSM with their own candidates.
Ultimately while this was a net positive for EVE, now that we've got CCP's attention and all aspects are open for discussion for changes, there's a use for people with very specific expertise. Widdershins is the only highsec wardec/griefer candidate, and having someone who understands the mechanics inside and out has it's benefits. |
I'm not really sure what you're trying to prove here other than attempting to derail the thread like Miso the obvious CSM trolling alt(check posting history). In fact, the list of people you chose show a pretty big mix of longterm and shortterm pilots. Ashteron'N'KA, for example, is a 2005 pilot. 14 Non NPC corps is a pretty stable corp history. None of the pilots you've listed have ever to my knowledge left corp to "escape retaliation" as you put it.
The truth is, war decs are broken on both ends. Its too easy for corps and members to just leave and rejoin after the war is over, likewise its way too easy for groups like Lonetrek Salvage and Scrap to abuse these mechanics for offensive purposes.
While we currently may represent a niche, we do understand and accept that what we do under current game mechanics is most likely going to change. Iam and I have had lengthy conversations about this and realize this isn't what CCP intended when they invented the war dec system. With that being said, we want to make sure CCP gets things right when they do change the way dec system and while this may come across as arrogant, after looking at other CSM member's campaign platforms and what they would do to highsec, its clear to me they really dont understand the secondary effects of their proposals.
This is an extremely important CSM election to all members of highsec, be it PVPers or beariest of carebears. Look at CCP's track record of making changes that have tons of unwanted side effects like when they added truesec calculations into the value of nullsec systems in an attempt to make certain space more valuable...they mostly made lots of space useless. Even the most recent anomaly nerf should ring fresh in the heads of most nullsec dwellers. The last thing you want is people losing their blinged out Incursion ships for months due to unwanted game mechanics from a war dec change. Unfortunately, people would rather vote for a politician who promises them what they want and smiles when they pledge to fix what they just made worse...instead of just voting for someone who could have avoided the entire fiasco to begin with. |
Actually, it's not the first thing I want, but it's definitely up there.
One thing that really needs to change with Incursions is that player conflict is fully injected into the mix, perhaps that means less 'blinged out' ships as a result. But the last thing I want is a game that has high value PvE that is largely insulated from threat of other players... Themepark style grouped PvE raids have no place in a player conflict driven sandbox MMORPG, none at all!
If you actually LOOKED at the original post you were quoting, I did not write that Trebor was a douche. I barely even know who Trebor is. Look again.
I was asked by someone to forget about the political pretense, show some personality, and display some culture; so that's what I did. Apparently you are not good material for the kinds of groups we hang out with, because you seem to have no sense of (or indeed tolerance for) humor whatsoever.
I'm quite sure that nobody in PRONS has any problem whatsoever with homosexuals; we just joke with each other that we, or the others in the corp, are gayer than festival clowns. It's a minicultural thing, a humorous outlet, much the same way we are constantly telling everyone else in corp how terrible they are and how they should go back to mining veld in a Bantam, or how we just got a phone call from Seldarine and he says to let them know that they're terrible and they don't want to get better.
Gay jokes are inappropriate in the CSM, and calling other CSM members douchebags is not constructive. I'm not a bigot in the tiniest way, and you sound very very mad.
I believe I can clarify for Pinky-- "The last thing you want is people losing their blinged out Incursion ships for months due to unwanted game mechanics from an arcane side-effect of a war dec change that nobody understands."
CCP took the approach of rather than making it more clear to the players that remotely assisting other players was dangerous, they instead decided to just make it as safe as the most insular newbie thought it was. They should go back and revisit it, making it less safe again, but making sure that everyone knows how and why things can happen.
So I'm here to announce
That I'm not gonna make it for this CSM election. Sorry guys. Details here.
Yeah, this is lousy, but it's not all over. Not only will I be able to get a better run at it next year, but this year Alekseyev Karrde is definitely the man you want to vote for.
If you thought you wanted to vote for me, well then this is the guy you want to vote for. He might not have as much experience living on the edge of the exploit, but he's an excellent candidate and probably the single most important candidate to defend the very existence of PVP as we know it. There are multiple threats to this in the running, malicious and simply dim-witted, and if they had their way (not that CSMs do, but they have an influence) there would be nothing to protect the ideal. EVE could be divided into clear 'safe zones,' most of its players could be virtually unassailable, and all kinds of terrible things could result.
I have talked with Aleks, and he's a smart dude who knows what he's talking about. I believe he has the best interest of the game at heart, and the only disagreements that have surfaced between us in discussion have been matters of expression and miscommunications.
Vote for him. Show your support. Do it as if you were voting for me. If you had talked to me about a particular concern or something that I promised that I would look into if elected, tell me about it, or tell him directly, either one is fine.
