Seriously though, if you want cities then your best bets are London, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and maybe York (for the scenery win). If you want country side, Lake District and Peak District are your best bets. If you want quaint little villages that serve tea (and such) you can't go far wrong with Cornwall or Devon. ------

Edited by: Kalahari Wayrest on 07/01/2008 21:25:09 Edited by: Kalahari Wayrest on 07/01/2008 21:17:27 Well I can't give you much information as...despite living here, I haven't seen much of it Personally I prefer Scotland to England but it might be a little out of your way. I'll just describe the bits I've seen or liked or lived in in England I guess, a bit hard to know what to recommend as I don't know what you're looking for If you're able to get up to Scotland - do!
Someones mentioned Stone Henge before (think that's in Somerset? It's definately south west somewhere - no Wiltshire) might be disapointing if you expect it to be like the pictures (it's smaller than you might think, and surrounded by road...) but still pretty cool.
Glastonbury Torr too...and if you like...rocks on hills there's plenty more here.
All the touristy bits in London, obviously. View by open top bus and official london taxis...avoid the tube if you can possibly help it, but if you're travelling any parts via the london underground get a map of it first and plan where you're going - and avoid it like the plague in rush hour.
The Isle of Wight is about 2 hours by train out of london + a quick ferry ride (15-20 mins)...it's been billed as a minuature england, which is a lie, it's varied in landscape but is culturally void and very small. There's no excitement or night life but it might be good for holiday makers - it's a bit twee but there are some nice views, old pubs and interesting sites.
Where I'm at now is a small out of the way city called Lincoln but it has a Cathedral and Castle right next to eachother for convinience There are also boat rides up the river which is quite cool.
New Forest might be good if you like nature.
But if you just want the big city tour, here are the biggest cities in England.
edit: I think you can have a beer with food from the age of 16 in pubs. That's always what I've thought and put in practice when I was younger but can see no evidence of that on the interwebs But given some of your trip you'll be 18 you'll be fine, especially as you'll have your passport on you anyway for proof of ID __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus

It's in Wiltshire. As are a number of other neolithic...stuffs, if you're in to that kind of thing. Avebury and the West Kennet Long Barrow spring to mind.
Wouldn't recommend it unless you're a history/archaeology buff, though, or are in the area. Interesting, but not really interesting enough to warrant a long trip out there. ------

Edited by: Dheorl on 07/01/2008 21:34:46 Covent garden to see street theatre (and cos its covent garden and has shops)(depending on what type of food you like there is a grill that does up to 60% off on mondays just off covent garden which is a godsend because of the general price of food there).
Also Snowdon is great depending on weather. It's one of the only places where you can see every country in the british isles at once (if you can see through the cloud) so may be a nice place to stop if your doing a tour of the place. There is a train to the top (I hear the rails I great for sledging in winter (don't ask)) or you can be a real man and walk (the pig track route isn't great and the tourist one is very packed but there is one going along one of the ridges that is nice).
I'll come up with some more later but those are a few to be thinking about.

If your in the UK for any length of time Portsmouth is a must for the Naval museum and HMS Victory, Stonehenge sucks tbh you cant actually get within in a mile of it and all there is to do is stand on a damp windswept moor usually in the rain although the visitor center has some interesting stuff.
London's great just so much to see and do and the Tower of London is a day out in itself, for mountain scenery you will want to see North Wales or the Scottish highlands both have plenty of great castles to. ----------------------------------------------- My new years resolution is to give up nonconstructive posting |

Stone Henge is pretty impressive, especially when you're able to get within a few feet (as I have as an Archaeologist!), but Avebury is really good, you can walk around, clamber over the huge banks.
Silbury Hill is quite a sight too. Also West Kennet Long Barrow is something to see, see what they built almost 5700 years ago.

London to Inverness by car is approximately 10 hours. Land's End to John O'Groats is around 14 hours, which is the extent of a "long journey" in the UK.
The former would be necessary if you intended to go to Loch Ness. The best option would probably be to get the sleeper train to Aberdeen, then up to Inverness. I'm not sure if there's a direct line up to Inverness, but it's not really important - you'd come to Aberdeen as it's the closest central hub between Haza, Mez and myself!

Well we are putting the barriers up soon - overpopulation is becoming a real issue regardless of everything else - for the next few years Britain is essentialy full. Look at the housing amrket as an indicator, mass demand has greatly inflated the value of property...

Edited by: Kalazar on 08/01/2008 13:39:59 Hmm, reckon most of the things have been said already. Not sure Bristol has been mentioned though, has places like @Bristol, which is an alright place to spend an afternoon or so, and it's not too far from the centre of Bristol itself. There's the zoo up past Clifton, and there's a few decent places to have a meal around, couple of nice pubs too (even if you're not drinking). Plus it's close to Bath, which has been mentioned already, nice architecture, the Roman Baths, etc.
But yeah, Stone Henge (and Old Sarum and Salisbury Cathedral seeing as they're so close), the Lake District, Cardiff (don't go to Newport though, it's a dump, the only reason anyone would ever have to go to Newport is if they're changing trains there, or they're going to the Passport Office). ----------------------------------------------
