Edited by: Skandranon on 20/03/2004 08:34:27 No Elite frigates in this topic.
Was thinking of playing in a frigate again fer kicks, using only standard off the market items, and a frig like the kestral or trist.
would a tristan with drones and light neutrons do more damage than a kestral firing missiles?
or is there another frigate I'm overlooking that could do better?
I'm not talking about long extended fighting, but a fast hit and run thing where yer in and yer out quick like.

incursus with named ion blasters= 55dmg every 0.6 seconds
Mimiru > It'd be a tie, the monkies nerfed pooflinger wouldnt have enough tracking to hit the parrot orbiting him, but the parrot's beak is so small it couldnt break the monkey's fur tanking. |

Kestrel has like a 60km targetting range base, that's fairly huge.. if you're looking for damage at a distance, go Kestrel.
If you want a short range damage setup, try a rifter with projectiles (which is the fastest dmg frig) or incurus with blasters (which is probably pretty decent too). ------

I'd be damn surprised if it's not the incursus with modal neutron blasters, if you can fit 3.

Punisher with Medium Modulated Beams?
Dunno, really.
Kestrels have that fear factor - cruise missiles headed toward you are a thrilling sight

A incursus or tristan could outdamage a kestrel by quite a lot, but needs some time to do it, a kestrel can do a lot of damage almost instantly, but then needs a long time to be able to do damage again. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

A Rifter can be setup with 3 turrets and 1 launcher or 2 of each. Either way that could put out some serious hurt. Also happens to be one of the fastest and most agile frigates.

All depends;
For a sure amount of hitting power quickly youve got the kestrel, almost granted 900-1200 damage in a couple of seconds. However people can avoid missiles quite easilly. Tristan and imucaus can hit pretty hard very quickly like people have mentioned. However the rifter if it gets wreakins hits with those small guns will hit very hard. (note siggy) and you can get higher. So a rifter with 2 280's and 2 launchers can do alot of damage, but it depends on luck with projectiles :)
All depends really, most friggies set out right can hit very hard.

Edited by: Jim Raynor on 20/03/2004 11:02:54 Minmatar frigates are total cheese compared to other frigates. Kestrel/Breacher/Inquisitor is cheesey to a degree too but you can avoid cruise missiles entirely with enough speed.
Comparing a Rifter to a Merlin for example is a total joke. Simular stats, but the Rifter is literally twice as fast, and of course, the Caldari bonus sucks (shields on frig useless / range on hybrid pretty close to useless).
(Frigate 4 / Nav 4) Merlin top speed = 276m/s ~1.6km/s w/ MWD Rifter top speed = 432m/s ~2.6km/s w/ MWD
I'd really wish they'd balance frigates out a bit, (like removing cruise missiles capability from frigates, making lighter missiles better and faster so they can actually HIT frigates).
Okay I'm done ranting. :)
EDIT: Please note I only use Merlin as an example, as it's my favorite frigate and pretty useless for PvP because frigates are all about speed really.
Most frigates in this game are useless, unless you can exceed 2km/s you can not PvP in a frigate pretty much. I would like to see CCP address frigate balance so that they're all fun to use.
Missiles are useless again other frigates, perhaps frigates just move too fast, or perhaps missiles are just too slow, I think rockets/light missiles should be able to hit frigates, they do pitiful damage to begin with.
Right now you have good frigates and sitting ducks. It's one or the other.. ------

I don't if its just me being crap, but i find it involves work to make 280s work well against other frigates, if you just shoove your 2600m/s rifter in orbit and try to kill things, 2k NPCs become difficult, as the tracking seems to let you down, so you end with "Bombing runs" to do max damage. For this reason i prefer hybrids for dogfighting, 280mm for hunting cruiser NPCs...
Incursus rocks, but Jim your right frigate speeds are wildly disproportionate, EVERYTHING feels slow after flying minmatar. Take kestrel and the breacher. In every way bar one, the kestrel wins, BUT, with and AB and an MWD on it, it still goes 800m/s slower than the single MWD breacher.... My rifter does nearly 600m/s more than my tristan, both with 1 MWD.
If your after pure damage, Incursus with Neutron. I'f you'd like to stay alive long enough to use it, put an MWD and use ions, easy to make that setup sustainable, and it still brings a whole world of pain. Picking up named stuff for frigates is quite easy thou, so don't right it off, go to a 0.5 and crawl belts, you'll get piles of decent frigate loot. -----------

Yeah a rifter with 280's and launchers isnt a dog fighter, its an indy and cruiser hunter. Sucks against another friggy if the pilots good. Though ive taken out plenty of other frigs. It rocks against cruisers, as they dont expect it to do as much damage as it does. Beaten a rupture that way hehe.

I have a Rifter with 3 208mm and one launcher ... it's really fun hunting NPCs with it and even more fun if they send in a cruiser from time to time

So would I. However, I suppose if you count the range the Kestrel can launch from, and the ground the Incursus has to cover to get into weapons range you may have a slight difference, but then again I suppose the Incursus will be faster then the missiles in any case.
It should be the Incursus if you have moderate gunnery skills

A punisher set up purely for damage would probably be the most dangerous if you don't want to get within tiny distances (if I remember correctly a punisher in the championship was doing shots of something like 250 a hit using medium modulateds and heat sinks, you'd probably do reasonably well with stock equipment). Unfortunately against anything bigger than a frigate it'd be too slow in that type of setup to last long. I suspect in setups realistic for normal PvP lots of ships with different setups work out at roughly the same at the end of the day.

Another plus in favour of the incursus is its large (for a frigate) drone bay. I'm pretty sure it's the only frigate that can pack a heavy drone.

as a PvP frigate I would not wanna stick around long enough for a drone to come back to be scooped up, or for a drone to do any dmg lol

The Incursus can only carry a medium drone. You're thinking of the Imicus which is the only frigate with a 250m3 drone bay.

incursus with 3 neutrons (easy fit with a micro aux powercore). those things are amazing at spitting out damage.. and 3 named ones only take up 30 power grid... so with that Micro aux PC you can eaisly fit whatever else you want on it.
