Solo piracy is a *****.
I recently moved back to a region that I used to base out of. Of course, the area induces strong nostalgia, and it is a wonderful place for a solo pirate... sort of.
Over the last four days, I have lost FOUR Sacrileges to blobs; It's becoming incredibly hard to find a decent fight these days. I chose the Sacrilege because of its ability to fit MWD/Web/Scram/Injector and run a nasty tank capable of tanking gate guns for a while. Also, if **** hits the fan, it's not too hard to run... or so I thought.
Sac #1 - Phobos and Rax on the gate. They engage. I start on the Rax. By the time he pops, there's 2 hurricanes and a Huginn. I kinda suicided this one.
Sac #2 - Travelling through low sec and jump into a camp. Two Ravens, Tempest, Huginn. MWD back to gate. Torps waste me pretty much instantly. (I think cause of the Sig Radius from MWD.)
Sac #3 - Attacked a noob Raven on the gate. He was dying. Deimos shows up and wastes me. Gate guns hurt, too.
Sac #4 - Warp in on a drake in a belt. Web/Scram, then another drake/stiletto/brutix show up.
Granted, some of these loses could have been prevented, but hell, It's a tough life for a solo pirate. Maybe I've just hit a bad streak, who knows. Anyone else having similar experiences? Please share.

Solo piracy's succession comes in waves. As certain corporations and alliances rotate various regions will feel the effects. And as those corporations split apart or increase in size so do the traffic activity patterns.
What I learned was best is to preplot various courses through your hunting session. Check your origonal course and then compare that to the stats provided by your map. What's the Ships Killed stats? Pods destroyed stats? Is there an unusually large presence of ships in the past 30 minutes on one of your system nodes? Reroute.
Planning your path a bit ahead will give you quite a few less surprise encouters, especially since you know where the softer (fewer in system) targets will be and where the large gate camps have been waiting for some time.
Adapt, and it isn't too bad while the events of that region move by. ---------

Think low sec solo stuff is all about getting used to the locals. Even in a few months certain systems will change from hotspots to lame camp areas. Alot of the time its six hours of screwing around one hour of straight fights.

Just go in with one other BS and a tackling cruiser the less people you use, the less loot you gotta give up

Generaly 10+ is "blobed" it sounds like you had bad luck but not one of your losses was to a blob, all were what we like to call "gangs" some were even solo. Such as the lone Demios that killed you.

I think solo-pirates should check in to scanning and mission probing.
I've been thinking about it for a while, and I reckon I've got a decent concept for it.
You don't need amazing skills for scanning, and many mission runners take more than a few good recon scans to finish up. Probe launchers have high cpu reqs but it is possible to come out with some decent boat-setups, particularly if you take into account the fact that you can gain dps from the local npc's if you fly right, and you plan to fight specific fields of target.
For example, I'm working on a Myrmidon setup that uses a triple ECM mids, with no tank. Its risky, but most misson runners won't bring warp scramblers, so you should be ok if things start to go south.
Its just an idea for me at the moment, but I think the point is to learn to adapt, and to use the tools available. Pick your target type, and use the tools available to work to the plan. Then a little patience and location research can give you some good kills i think.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Solo piracy at gates in a HAC = fail. There is a reason why the "nano-fag" ships are popular in belt piracy. And you also have mission probing, if you have an alt for it.

Edited by: Atreides Horza on 08/01/2008 10:32:56 Edited by: Atreides Horza on 08/01/2008 10:28:58 Hey there, Phil.
This shouldn't be news to you. When your lads lived in Vitrauze, I came across you often - and when I did, it would be in huge gangs, consisting mainly of young players in battleships. Ripe targets when on their own, but dangerous when in groups - and not more than a few months ago, I could've been the one writing your initial post when I engaged a small gang of yours in an ishtar and got hit by a 15+ blob.
Put shortly, if I saw you around, I'd be bringing friends for that kill.
I don't like EVE being that way - but I'm a realist, and the days of me kindly bending over to the next wonderkid in his****tastic nanohac and his quarterbacks hugging on the next gate are gone.
That having been said, I'd like to offer you some ideas and hints as to how you avoid these situations:
1). Choose the right ship for the right job. The HAC line of ships, while nice for roaming, get a lot of attention in local, because they pretty up killboards - and since they're most often nano'ed up their @sses or tanked to hell, people WILL bring the tools needed to get the job done. Hence, the blob.
2). Don't put yourself in silly situations. Getting hit by a deimos at a gate, whilst off'ing a noob raven is IMO a silly situation.
3). Make yourself an attractive target. Roam far away from home, where people are less likely to have mental images of that 30+ alliance blob humping local the night before. Show them that you're interested in a fight, without necessarily parking your @ss at 0 to planet 1. Woe them, romance them, sex them up, and you'll get that little piece of tail more often than not.
4). Make yourself a realistic target. If you're in a ship doing 4000 m/s, dont expect a battlecruiser with a base speed of 200 m/s to come trundling after you. There's a price to being able to disengage at will - pay it or fly something else.
5). Don't play games. Avoid fighting in docking range of stations and jumping range of gates. Make people commit their ships if they want you on their killboard, instead of offering them a way out by docking or bringing friends.
6). Situational awareness. Drake in a belt = be ready to run if local spikes. Everything else in a belt = be ready to run if local spikes. Also, keep close tabs on who's in local. Keep yourself up to scratch with who's flying with who and who's likely to have a gang next door.
7). Choose your fights. You're in a HAC. Most HACs do BS-level damage with little or no tank at all, which means 'kill instantly and gtfo', instead of 'let's stick around and expect to tank everything they throw at me'. If you wanna tank sentries and fight prolonged engagements, use a battlecruiser or a command ship.
... and as for your final conclusion on solo piracy? Yes, it's hard. Damn hard - and it won't get easier. But it sure as hell is fun!

For belt piracy, Inties ftw. Prettymuch everyone ratting in low sec has no clue how to properly fit their ship. Fit a Kinetic hardener (most common damage type), small rep, go up close and kick the nubs around a bit.
The only real fights you'll get though is jumping larger gangs of newbies either ratting or looking for kills of their own. Been doing some fun little 2-4v1's with my Crusader, it's really a lot of fun

I think the carebears or "positve sec" or "pirate hunters" have finally after 5 years learned to fight back, which is why I urge for the removal of sentries at gates. But tbh, the way you were flying, you were just looking for a fight... thats pvp. The real piracy is with black op ships with a alt character scanner to scan down agent runners with goot loot, thats piracy, to make a profit off your kill.

8). Be gracious in victory AND defeat, and treat your opponents with as much respect after the fight as you are ruthless in the fight. If you're an arrogant @-hole or if you smack the crap out of local when your blob's next door, people are just gonna leave when you enter local, and that = no fights and no victims.
... and as for your final conclusion on solo piracy? Yes, it's hard. Damn hard - and it won't get easier. But it sure as hell is fun!
I subscribe to this poster ;)
Also, to the OP: see his points (1) and (4) - flying a Sac preety much guarantees that people will bring in numbers and/or HACs/recons to deal with you. We all know the Sacriledge is a bloody awesome boat, and personally it worries me much more on scanner then a Vagabond/Diemost/Eagle/etc does. Which is the reason I know I won't play with it if I see it, unless I've got a couple of mates ready to jump in and kill it.

... and here's the thing, lads.
You don't really NEED 1000 dps to get a job done. Everybody's become so wound up in the whole nanofad/zomgblobcoming/omfglocal-atmosphere that they forgot that you're not SUPPOSED to be killing all of eve with that one fitting in 5 seconds flat.
Opting for tank rather than gank DOES pay off if you fly it accordingly. You'll kill stuff slower, sure, but you'll live long enough to kill all of it.
Vice versa, speed gives you the option of going in for the fast kill. If it doesn't happen and you need to get out, you can.
Personally, I don't 'get' people solo'ing in battleships. Sure, they have their place - but it's not in a solo role. They reek of bait and blob, and thus is a turn-off for anyone with half a braincell. Flying one solo, you'll be lucky to catch an anastethized sloth with a limp, and doing 30+ jumps in one is about as much fun as counting toe-nail clippings. It's all good though, if size is your prerogative. Just stop trying to fit universal setups and complain when the rest of EVE doesn't apply to it.

OP - I feel your pain. Went out for a spin in my Harpy with an odd fit to test out a theory I had (max DPS and AB/tracking disrupter for tank). Found an Eagle in belt - did I listen to the voice in my head saying 'ITS A TRAP!' - Nooooooo. Did I slow boat it to him 90 km away? Sure, afterall I had an ace up my sleeve a buddy in an osprey to rep me while I went in for an 'easy' kill...
Fast forward 30 seconds later, and a Crow, Falcon, Vulture in addition to the original Eagle, are pounding the Osprey and I into space dust.
/cryface
Bah - next time Ive got to be more patient, and listen to my trap/blob instincts more. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.

Miners and PVEers no longer use low sec and the only fights you'll find will be from pvpers who often gang and blob as you experienced. I would recommend probing mission runners as it's about the only viable way to make a serious living from solo piracy these days.
It's a sad fact that ccp don't care about pirates and the state of low sec. We make up a very small percentage of the player base and the money from our subscriptions isn't enough to earn their attention. |

Back to the Onne gate with you, Phil... take some of the D-L nubbins with you for company, its where you were born to be, sugar. <3

It's a sad fact that ccp don't care about pirates and the state of low sec. We make up a very small percentage of the player base and the money from our subscriptions isn't enough to earn their attention.
I got a nice 16+M of loot today soloing in a Rifter. Eh, what?

Hey there, Phil.
But it sure as hell is fun!
sounds nice and all, but in practice you fly recons :p

Not so.
I fly recons when the situation demands it, which happens to be quite often in the blob heaven that is Aeschee. But if you check my stats on our killboard, you will see that I solo in a wide array of other ships and get the same amount of kills with them, if not more.
I don't believe in restricting myself to a certain ship or a certain setup. To me, ships are a toolbox and the setup constitutes it's contents. If you bring a set of wrenches to fix a set of shelves, it's not gonna happen.

Unfortunately, yes. Hence the need for me to correct you.
Once again, look at our killboard. You'll see me kill in a wide array of ships which is, admittedly, highly situational - and when you've seen me mainly in recon ships, it'll be because I know you'll have a big gang within spitting distance, or because I'm tackling/supporting for my gang.
What I'm saying is that in order to be succesful at killing, you'll need to adapt to the environment around you, instead of crying when the environment won't adapt to you. If one particular ship allows you to adapt and cope, then by all means do so... and if not? Well, there are better ways of coping than declaring the death of PvP in a fit of frustration.

Now, don't get me wrong. I agree with the OP. PvP'ers in EVE across the board need a heavy dose of testicular fortitude - and for what it's worth, I commend his efforts and urge the rest of you fine lads to follow his example.
But the solution to making it work for him lies within himself, and ranting at his misfortunes isn't gonna help one bit.
Bah.
I haven't declared the death of PvP. I'm simply a pirate trying to make his way in EVE and I'm having a tough time ATM.
Don't act like you haven't ever hit one of those dreaded losing streaks - every pirate has.

Ofc I have, and I don't see how any of what I've written so far is translated into me claiming the opposite. All I'm saying is that when Eve life starts pushing you around, you gotta roll with it.
Now you've had a taste of both sides of the spectrum, being both the blobTe and the blobbed. Utilize those experiences you've made, adapt to the circumstances and I'm sure the worm will turn for you.
Best of luck anyways.

Only way to kill someone in belt is if he doesnt know about existance of local chat. It is pretty much impossible. People you kill in belts will drop 125mm scout railguns and basic energized thermic membranes.
To illustrate how sad state of belt pvp is, I was writing this while trying to find an osprey in belt, he docked by now and it took me 10 secs to pinpoint the planet with 3 belts and than warped into random one. By the time i was there he was at station.

The only real fights you'll get though is jumping larger gangs of newbies either ratting or looking for kills of their own. Been doing some fun little 2-4v1's with my Crusader, it's really a lot of fun
I remember you.. Lost a pretty penny Punisher and pod along with a +3 set of implants. Too bad I was at half armor when you warped in or things might have gone differently.

yea i like a bit solo pvp pieracy or just ppl ratting :) ppl drop better loot than most rats
have u tryed 0.0 m8 no gate guns to worry about but will b blobs big fckign blob's
just knowing were to go is key
find a little trade route ull find them if u chill in a area for day or to try to look for NPC region's with surounding allaince held 0.0 as less likly to b jump bridge's as a travling means in outer less popalated area's
some were like CURSE is good u have NPC 0.0 to base from make a little ss about 350k abouve a gate ina 2 gate system scan gate chill wait for your prey( put a small sucker bubble 60k behind other gate ) check map for blob's and pod kill's ( pod kills = dictor or bubble or fast inty lol ) take your time alot isk farmer's badger run loot and faction loot also solo ravens on route back and foe NPC station when
i like solo pieracy but find it best in gang's 3-5 dictor/EW/hac's

Its too risky nowadays. I had a nasty experience the other day: -10 mega outside station, I aggressed in my mega, another mega, hyp, and maelstrom appear and pew pew my face.
I tried to deagress but it wouldn't let me redock, even 1min after i stopped aggressing.
In retrospect, I could've taken them all probably. I had the 1st mega in 25% armor when they appeared, and he had only just started on my shield.
Oh well, i know what to do next time.

I totally agree with the op - nowadays the only good solo targets I can find are in the 'newbie lowsec' systems where people haven't learnt that the best way to be successful in eve is to blob. It annoys me even more when people blob just for the sake of it. I warped into a belt in my vexor hunting another vexor, about 2 seconds later another 3 ships have showed up to kill me - I still managed to warp before they locked me though. Later, warp to a planet at 100km, and there's a hyperion along with other assorted support there, just waiting to kill my vexor - that time they succeded. Whatever happened to fair fights and solo piracy? ======

I fail to see how that would bring anything back except people having to store 1000s of bookmarks on already crammed servers to get by in 0.0, and ofc a shuttle/hauler buffet at every gate in low sec.
Warp to 0, if anything, opened the doors to low sec which was a good thing. The problem is, though, that even the biggest moron can see that there's nothing to do in low sec that you can't do in high sec while being safer and earning more money.
