I've not heard of any info on whether these will even be coming out? I havn't heard anybody mention them either on the boards or anywhere else. Does anyone know if they exist or will be released at some point?
I'm curious because it occured to me that it might be an idea to take tech2 indi's in another direction from the other tech2 ships.
Instead of just being a beefed up ship with more space and more slots they could instead be more industrial mining platforms. Something with the following attributes.
1) Cargo capacity of one of the lower indi's mk2 e.t.c
2) A *lot* of high slots, perhaps 5-6 but with powergrid so low that fitting weapons is difficult but on the otherhand having ship bonuses to make fitting mining lasers possible.
3) Very few medium or low slots.
4) Relatively cheap about the 5mil mark perhaps a bit less.
5) Good armour, and a quite a bit of cap.
You'd end up with a very good solo miner, which would be even more effective coupled with tech1 indi's to haul. They'd be more a compliment rather than a replacement for the tech1 indi's or rather perhaps certain models of them could.
Might be a good way of diverging mining and combat ships away from each other...

So you want a ship that in all likelyhood is gonna need indy lvl 5 too fly, too be a thorax. So how about you buy a thorax and the dedicated haulers that trained iny lvl 5 ( and no not everyone that trains indy lvl 5 trains gallente indy lvl 5 ) to get a better hauler since that's what they trained for. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Oh come now, I fly the thorax quite a bit, this proposal is for a thorax with TEN times the cargo space!
Anyways... what we need is clipper ships, something thats reasonably fast with around 1000m3 of base cargo. It would be for all your blockade running needs. :)

We've got indies that can do well over 1km/s sustained, we got cruisers that can take over 1k m3, think those 2 variants cover the smaller faster hauling needs more then well enough.
Indies that can haul more, and can't be taken out by a single kestrel, would be something we don't have.
And a thorax with 10 times the hold is solo strip miner, think we got plenty of those already. Unless you give that new miner indy the same defensive capabilities of a BS it's useless for mining in <0.5 NPCs target the weakest ship in the belt and in anything but 0.5> those NPCs eat indies for breakfast. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

When CCP made indies they worked very hard to keep this from happening. thus the 1 turret point. The idea of eve is not solo mining, it's team play, and a ship that can mine and haul defeats the purpose.
Indies are made for hauling... and maybe with shiva, mobile refining (or something to put all that CPU to use) but they will never be mining ships.

Edited by: Dash Ripcock on 21/03/2004 03:36:34 How about Indys with on-board refineries? Say a refinery takes up 3000m3 or something, stick it in your cargo hold, and away we go...

I dont want to see indies that can mine with 6 miner II (cause thats just a silly war for even worse AFK strip mining in high security space), I dont want to see indies with refineries (cause we need to have a reason to fight over deep space stations and put up outposts..
What I DO want to see is Q-Ships.
Take an indy, double its high slots, armor and powergrid. Reduce its cargo to about 5% what it is now. Give it a reasonable number of turret/missile slots... and make it so it looks exactly like the indy it's based on when you get sensor info on it untill it does something indys are not supposed to be. That would give the frigate pirates, or even the ocasional cruiser pirate something to think about. +++
It's called "low security space" for a reason. |

I'd like to see 0 turret point very large cargo space indies and 2kish cargo space fast indies with good defenses (blockade runners, with more cargo space than vexor and not much combat ability). Every other category is taken care of.

LOL..cos mining isn't easy enough as it is? You want one ship that can mine, haul, fight all in one?
Jeez mining is already rediculously easy and by far the best source of income, Mercenary | The Azath |

Seen the bonus for the covert operations skill? Well those ships get +1 to warp core stability per lvl last i checked.
A bonus like that for a blockade runner indy would be very sweet. Agility and Warp Core bonus.

I've heard alot of people ruminating on the boards about having a mining only platform as opposed to using a battleship platform. The ship I'm talking about is basically a thorax with a large cargo bay, but at the same time has so little powergrid it can't put up any kind of serious offense and has so much armour that it can take more than a few cruise hits before it dies. All for a price that makes losing one not a huge deal.
It also is going to be painfully slow, with so few low and medium slots that actually travelling in it will be a horror, but when it gets to its destination it will be good at its job e.g. mining.
I know CCP would very much prefer it if we all played as teams, we all know that not everyone in this game prefers to play that way. This ship is kind of a balance, because of its turrets, armour, cargo hold and price it's a disposable mining ship that you can take into risky situations on your own and come back with a decent amount of ore, but its so slow that for any serious mining your going to take twice as long if not more than a normal indi to get anywhere. Thats the impetus for teamwork.

I've been thinking about the Q-Ship concept for a long time. Very little cargo, lots of armor, and a couple of large turrets - or missle launchers... And it should look exactly like an indy. Make it costly.
And then go cruising the gates looking for bandits to surprise!

The mining issue could be solved by introducing specialised turret mounts for mining lasers, in the same way missile launchers require a specialised hard-point now. This would make possible, for example, an indy with 3 turret slots that could only mount 1 mining laser.
TBH I would like to see dedicated mining ships -- using battleships and cruisers is kinda silly IMO. It should be as tough to learn to fly a big mining ship as it is the equivalent BS though, to encourage specialisation.

Who is really going to sit there and pull down ore only, and train to do only that?
Specialisation really has to have its limits, or you are cutting out all the other things people can do in the game.
Careful what you pidgeon hole people into playing in a game that has many different options. I know for sure I wouldn't want to Pay my subscription to mine only.
Mine, trade, build, fight, hunt, etc. Its the variety that may keep you interested. Just careful how much you want to specialise without cutting yourself out of the rest of the game.

Last time I checked, npc indies seem to have 3 small turrets (well 6 but you know what I mean). maybe this is a hint of things to come.

Personally i am all for mineing and manufacturing. I don't like PVP combat, hunting rats is fun, I like to be incontrol and ki=now i have a leg up on the enemy. Getting ganked by a group hanging out at a gate takes all the fun out of the game for me.
I think we need Q ships( they should be on a even par with a battle ship) mostly because it would make the game safer for the reall indi pilots, and make the gate campers a little more frightfull of opening up on a Q-ship.
I also think we need tech 2 indi's, The first being a Heavly armored, no wepons blockade runner. Galentte Mk2 sized ship with a frigates speed.
The second being a dedicated industrial ship, capable of mounting large number of lasers, large hold, slower than current indies. and the concord prohibits there use within 0.5+ space due to there ecological damages
The third is a massive battleship sized industrial, Slow moving, no (yes no) armor, and frigate strengeth shields, also has 10x the cargo space of a Gallentte Mk5 and low cpu and grid power. this ship is used to move HUGE volumns of material and or large Deployable objects like station controll towers. Theye are litterly one or two shots to kill by a crusier. They have to be well guarded when moving in anything remotly hostile teritory.

The problem is that for all practical purposes it is impossible to actually 'guard' something in Eve, it just is not part of the execution (whether it was part of the concept I do not know), which is why Industrial ships as they stand are such a curious concept.
Oh, and yes, I know that various people have tactics and methods for moving these types of ships under escort, but in terms of physically stopping someone shooting them you have no real chance because even if you sweep an area before going through it only really takes one or two frigates to warp in half way through the transference and the hauling ship is small toasty bits of bread. You might then kill the frigates, but they have still trashed your hauler, and presumably if moving under guard it would be carrying something important. Maybe when proper intelligence gathering ships are available, and you can physically empty several systems of potential hostiles, you will have a chance; but that is a rather extreme amount of work, and to be honest you would be better off taking something like a Mega and filling the low slots with expanders; voila, you have several thousand capacity and it flies like a bath tub, but at least has the shields and armour to survive long enough for an escort to do some damage to the enemy.
However, this all comes back to the age old discussion/point about beefing the Industrial ship armour/shield/structure right up so that they can soak up some damage before popping. Insert standard re-hash of the argument here ;)

Rask: we already have Q-ships on par with battleships, they're called.... battleships. we already have heavily armoured high speed haulers, they're called... cruisers. we already have stripminers, they're called... battleships. current indies can be ganked in seconds by frigates, and you want to make that easier, no amount of ships can defend a ship that goes down in a single shot.
IOWs you want something that takes a lot of training and costs a fortune to be able to do what we can already do, or a ship that can be killed by a random noob shooting at the wrong thing. yeah all for it.. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |
