About to do my upgrade and while im sticking with Xp pro and have 4 gig ( special deal at the time ) im wondering how much Xp can address. My mobo manual ( asus P5kc ) says that i shouldn't install more than 3 gig. So maybe i should look into purchasing Vista 64 bit.
My question is, will all the programs I use right now, such as Eve, teamspeak, video stuff, games etc work on Vista 64bit?
I use avast antivirus, firefox, Battlefield 2, Supreme commander aswell.
Advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Vista 32bit with 3,33 GB RAM (4GB Installed) is faster then 64bit with 4GB ...
My System Q6600@3,2ghz (400x8) 3GB RAM Vista Ultimate 32bit 8800GT
I can run EvE Premium with all maxed at 100fps average...
3Dmark 06 13500pts...
the same tests with 4gb (had 4gb bevor an 64bit)
3Dmark 06 11000pts...
the 64 bit driver and software are not optimized yet so its no performance win while using 4gb...
buy 3GB and use 32bit OS its atm the fastet u can get.

What you need to make sure of is that there are drivers available for all your hardware. If those are available, you should be able to use the 64 bit version - so start by visiting the sites of the hardware manufacturers and try to download vista 64 bit drivers for everything.
I know there is a 64 bit version of avast, but I'm not sure about the rest. They should still be able to run though.

How are the drivers for it? Do most of the programs (i.e. 32-bit) work ok with it? Photoshop, games etc?
Oh and how much of a difference would I notice from standard XP? I just bought a Intel Core2 Duo 6750, 4 gigs ddr, and a 8800gt and wanted to get the performance out of this rig.

well i just spent the last 2 days pulling my hair with Vista 32bit. My new system was crashing alot and after patching it with hot fixes etc etc it was stable. But Eve wouldnt work in the end and lat night at 5:30am i had enough and went back to Xp Pro. Not one single issue since.
Vista is fine for some, but i honestly dont think Ill ever touch it again for years.

Friend has just built new PC and bought Vista Home premium 64bit, and the only problem he has had is that itunes doesn't work, other then that it is all good :D
If you are buying an OS you want it to last a good few years and staying with 32bit is just going to hold you back in the future.

Vista 32, like XP, can only address 3.3GB of RAM, no matter what you do.
64 is OK, but for some it's faster, and for some it's slower. Like VIsta itself, everyone will have a different expericence with it. I personally love Vista as an OS, and now run it on everything. But for what I do outside of Eve, it suits me to have it (I use ultimate btw).
As for what will work on the 64bit, can't say for sure of the ones that you mention, my recommendation from experience is stick to a 32bit OS, unless they state 100% support for 64bit. Just in case it does not work, and you waste your money.
I do sigs and stuff...http://alvar.eve-stuff.net |
