Edited by: Imperator Jora''h on 16/01/2008 16:22:23 Ok...I'll cause you more trouble.
Reading what you have said about Haruhi I still have an issue with her being a god. Of course God may be most anything I suppose but typically its definition includes omniscient and omnipotent. From this I am seeing neither in Haruhi.
Is she powerful? Sure. But that power is seemingly at the mercy of the subconscious of a teenage girl (talk about freaking scary!). It does not seem her godlike omniscience is at work even subconsciously. So she has all the power and none of the restraint one might expect of a supreme being.
Do supreme beings have to be restrained? Probably not "have to" but I would think they are as a practical matter. Just willing universes into and out of existence on a whim seems...odd. Haruhi snipping the timeline on a whim to re-live the same week over and over is rather childlike.
Haruhi is frankly frightening. At least even evil dudes generally have a discernable motivation and even if you do not like it you can grasp it. Haruhi weilds ultimate power arbitrarily (or near enough). You just don't know what's coming next. No wonder her friends try so hard to restrain her.

So you finally understand why Haruhi is so much fun!

Agreed, this is what makes it interesting. If it's all in subconscious desires then things do turn out strange.....

You know, the whole "subconscious mind makes god-like decisions" reminds me of Forbidden Planet for some odd reason...

We already know that Lucky Star was just viral marketing for season 2 of Haruhi though

Meh, regardless I actualy like Lucky Star in some way, watched a few episodes but it's nothing I would watch in one go like Death Note or something.

If by that you mean an easily avoided trap then yes, I agree completely.
As a writer, I personally find omnipotent characters exceedingly boring in literature. The less human a character gets, the less interesting they become. Many writers fall in to the trap of making their lead characters superhuman, even though everything they wanted to portray with that could be easily done with other methods.
As for Haruhi, its obviously integral to the plot, and I actually enjoyed the show and light novels. Personally I like the idea that Kyon is really god. It probably isnĘt true, but it does make some things more reasonable. And seriously, isnĘt it more human to create a universe that aggravates the hell out of you? Especially when one doesnĘtĘ know that he is doing it at all? Imperfection is what you expect from reality, so then why would you make a perfect reality?
