Edited by: Ralara on 14/01/2008 13:15:58 Ralara's guide to ratting
Introduction
Hi folks. Most of you do not know who I am.
My name is Ralara, and I'm a member of a 0.0 alliance called Triumvirate.
Since I started playing Eve in 2005, I've spent approximately half of that time in 0.0 space. I've lived extensively in Angel space (the "east" of the galaxy) and in Guristas space (the "north-west" of the galaxy). During my time in Eve, I've spent time in the "noob" corp channels, the help channels and also the corporation and alliance channels available to me.
One topic comes up every so often, and it's posted here on the forums as well, regularly is the subject of "Ratting" and how best to go about this. I'd like to take some time here to explain how to rat efficiently in 0.0 space. This mini-guide is applicable mostly to 0.0, but I can't see any reason why it can't be applied to low security space or even high security space.
This guide is a work in progress and shouldn't be relied upon as the "be all and end all" of ratting. Mostly, it is a collection of my thoughts and experience when ratting. Certain elements may be incorrect or incomplete, and I assume no responsibility for any actions you may or may not take as a result of reading this mini-guide.
It is my intention to help people and explain elements of the game here. Constructive criticism is welcome.
This guide is not intended to assist in dead space exploration sites or missions. Certain elements may or may not be similar, however it's geared more towards the NPCs you find when you warp towards an asteroid belt or stargate, nothing more.
The guide
What is ratting?
Ratting is the process whereby a player character will enter a star system and warp towards an asteroid belt or a stargate. At these locations, NPC rats may be present. The player should kill these NPC character and in return receive a bounty. This bounty will reflect the "difficulty" of killing the NPC. The bounty is added to the player's wallet and from there, spent on whatever the player wants - ships, items etc.
There's a lot of stuff to cover here, and I'm not really sure where to begin.
I suppose as good a place as any to start is:
Maximising your profit
Ratting takes up time. It takes time for you to kill a NPC and you want to do this as quickly as possible so that you can move on to your next victim.
This means you want to do as much damage as possible in the shortest amount of time possible.
To that end, ratting is very much like doing missions - you should fit weapons on your ship that are effective against the rats' native resistances.
The following rat types and damage types detail what you should be aiming for:
Guristas: Kinetic then thermal damage.
Blood Raider: EM then thermal damage.
Sanshas Nation: EM then thermal damage.
Serpentis: Kinetic then thermal damage.
Angel Cartel: Explosive then Kinetic damage.
By design, these are also the resistances you should be aiming to use on your ship as well - Guristas deal out Kinetic and Thermal damage, but not EM or explosive (in any noticeable way, anyway).
The only exception to that rule is Angel rats - they actually deal out all types of damage. Mostly it is Explosive, but you'll find the odd EM ship or thermal ship to combat as well. Explosive is always their weakest link so always use explosive, but be prepared to receive Thermal torpedoes from the Angel Saint rats, for example.
Whilst I was ratting in Angel space, I never put any EM hardeners on my ships. I know in missions they deal out EM damage, but with ratting it's not really something you come across. Be warned, though, that it is a possibility.
Obviously this can cause problems with some ships. Amarr, for example, using LASER weapons, will have a hard time damaging Guristas or Serpentis rats because they have relatively high resistances against Thermal and especially EM weapons.

The same can be said of Gallente ships ratting in Blood Raider or Sansha space - the Kinetic damage from blasters or railguns isn't too great against these rats as the native resistances are quite high against these damage types.
There are ways around this of course - Gallente ships and some Amarr ships have large drone bays. Drones, of course, have different damage types, so you can get around this issue by having drones that deal the primary damage you're looking for.
Caldari, of course!, have the best options here as they can change their primary weapons on a whim - missiles. Missiles can be fitted for any damage type AND their battleships usually have enough space for five medium drones and five small drones as well!
Whilst I personally find the Raven to be the most efficient ship in this regard, that doesn't mean as an Amarr you can't rat in Guristas space - it may take a little longer but there's no point spending three or four months training up the skills for a Raven and missiles if you're an Amarr spec character just to rat.
Location, location, location
As any good estate agent will tell you, location is the most important thing to consider when buying a house. I don't find this necessarily true - I find that having a roof, or walls that aren't crumbling to be slightly more important than whether or not I have a nice view of a tree outside, but then I rent and haven't gone on a course on how to sell houses, so what do I know?
I do know that the location of where you rat is important. Two systems next to each other can give wildly different isk-results over the course of two hours, despite there being no appreciable difference between them.
A system is a system, right?
Well, no. What it comes down to is Security Status.
In 1.0-0.9 space, there are actually no rats. You wont find any at a belt because they don't exist. Ratting in somewhere like Jita (0.9) is pointless because there's nothing to rat.
You'll need to go down to 0.8 space or below in order to find some targets.
There's a general rule in EvE that the lower the security status of a system, the more the bounties are for the rats present. For example in a 0.8 system you might find a rat with a 5-10k bounty, whereas if you go to a 0.5 system, you might find rats with 30-40k bounties if you're lucky.
If you live in perpetual fear of being targeted by another player, you can stop reading the guide at this point, as that more or less can cover ratting in high sec space. The only other thing to remember is more belts = more spawns = more isk. So find a nice 0.5 system with 20 belts and rat away.
If you go into low security space or live in 0.0, read on, as there's some juicy information here for manipulating spawns to do your evil bidding.
The rest of this guide will be based as if you are ratting in 0.0 space. The following applies to Low Sec to a degree.
Once you get into 0.4 space and below, the rats will start to increase in bounties by quite a bit. By 0.1 space they are about 235k each which, compared to the 5-6k of high sec is quite an improvement.
When you get into 0.0 space, things change. Battleship class rats appear with bounties ranging from 500k to 1.85 million isk. That's a lot of isk!
It's fairly common knowledge, but by no means universal, that 0.0 space is not all 0.0 space.
In fact, just as "empire space" has security status ranging from 1.0 to 0.1, 0.0 has security staus ranging from 0.0 to -1.0 (negative 1.0)! this information is not displayed on the client - all you ever see is 0.0 as the security status, but it's there.

The most effective places to rat, therefore, are at the lower end of the negative scale - systems that are -1.0 ("true 0.0") to about -0.7. These systems are where you'll find spawns of two or three 1.85m isk rats. It's these rats you want to kill lots of, if you're after ISK or your own sec-status increases. These are also the "hardest" rats to kill - by no means difficult, if you are not careful with your tank, they can deal quite a bit of damage. In theory, they shouldn't be able to kill you if you're paying attention. You'll also find spawns here that will web you or warp scramble you, which is actually more dangerous - if you're being scrambled by 3 small interceptors and an enemy fleet, gang or even 1 player comes in system looking for an easy kill, you're going to be caught with your pants down. So be careful!
You'll also come across special spawns, mostly in 0.0 but especially in the true 0.0 systems (or those close). These spawns are commonly called "Hauler" spawns, "Faction" spawns (although more properly it's "Commander" rather than Faction) and "Officer" spawns.
Hauler Spawns
These spawns are interesting, if you like minerals and have a hauler nearby. They are industrial ships (Badger, Iteron, Bestower, Mammoth etc) belonging to the pirate faction of the space you're in. If you pop them, they drop minerals - anything from Tritanium to Mexorcite (apparently. The most I've come across is Zydrine but ho hum). The lowest hauler spawns start at 250k bounties and drop Tritanium or Pyerite (usually about 1 million units - it is a LOT of hauling). They progress upwards - 500k gives you Isogen, 750k gives you nox and isogen, 1m isk gives you zydrine, so you can tell at a glance if they're worth looting or not. They don't drop modules. If it's 750k or above I might take a look inside, if it's 500k or below I tend to ignore the wrecks, although I will always announce it in the Alliance or Corporation channels in case anyone else wants it. I mean, if I'm not going to use it, it may as well go to some use, eh?
Commander spawns
On the face of it, these are ordinary rats - they shoot you, have a bounty and drop loot. However, their bounties are much higher than ordinary spawns. The loot they drop is also usually of much better quality. If you've ever wondered where a "Dread Guristas Invulnerability Field" (that sells for about 350 million isk) comes from, this is it.
Each pirate faction (Guristas, Sansha's Nation etc) has a commander spawn associated with said faction, as described below:
Guristas - Dread Guristas
Sansha's Nation - True Sansha
Blood Raider - Dark Blood
Serpentis - Shadow Serpentis
Angel Cartel - Domination
You will notice these ships on your overview as they have the prefix of their Commander name. For example, a Dread Guristas Usurper will have a huge bounty (it's the Dread version of the 1.85m rat) on the order of about 15 million isk. You may encounter a Domination Saint etc.
These spawns are highly sought after for their loot, rather than the bounty. Sometimes the loot is rubbish - some faction ammo and a tag. Sometimes you can get the aforementioned DG Invulnerability Field. If you encounter one of these spawns, it is important that you go after the commander ship first. This is because I have noticed if you go after the escort (usually just normal ships), and kill them, the commander becomes "scared" and vanishes. This is normally to another belt or stargate, but if there are other people in the system with you, they might get there before you do! Salvaging a commander wreck also gives you more salvage components than normal. I've heard stories of people getting 20-30 million isk of salvage and possibly more, from a single commander wreck.

Edited by: Ralara on 14/01/2008 13:18:08 Officer Spawns
The holy grail of ratting is to encounter an Officer spawn. These are like Commander Spawns on steroids. The bounties are nearly 30 odd million a piece and the salvage is very lucrative. However, that's not why we go after them...
Officers drop "officer mods". These, like faction mods, offer extra abilities. For example, probably the most sought after module in the game, certainly the most expensive anyway, is Estamal's Modified Invulnerability Field, which grants 50% resists across the board. I've seen this sell for around 8 or 9 BILLION ISK. Certainly it's your lucky day if you encounter him! Other items of interest, which can bring in billions, are capacitor modules and smart bombs. These are usually whisked away by mother ship and titan pilots who use them on their multi billion isk ships.
Officer spawns are incredibly rare and I've only ever encountered two of them. Some people go for years without encountering them, some people find them in their first day in 0.0 space. It's luck, I'm afraid, just like Commander spawns.
Or is it?
2 simple ways of dating my teenage ratter
If you want to know how to manipulate the rats to get the maximum out of them for your needs, here's how.
Let's take a 0.0 system. It should have multiple belts inside it. The lower its true 0.0 security status is, the better. The lower it is, the more "difficult" the rats become (triple 1.85m spawns) and the more isk you'll make. The more belts there are, the more spawns will be available to you. I've found that on average, there's a spawn of rats for every 4 belts in a system, including stargates (give or take). Say you have a system with 12 asteroid belts and 3 stargates - you'll likely have about 3 or 4 spawns of rats in there. We'll use this as our example below.
1. Chaining
There's a bit of confusion over what "chaining" means. In the old days, if you killed a ship in a spawn, it would reappear if you didn't kill off the spawn quick enough. The more you killed, the more NPCs would appear - so if you got a 1.85m spawn, you could potentially get 2 more coming, then 3, 4, 5, 6, 7... all in very quick succession. Assuming you could take the DPS from the rats, you'd make a mint, literally killing non stop for as long as you could last or your ammo was stocked.
This was obviously insane and it got "nerfed". These days, chaining refers to the art of finding a spawn (any spawn, but it'd be best if it had high bounties) and killing off the battleships (the big isk earners). After about 5-10 minutes, if you've left the frigates/destroyers/support alone (or at least not killed them) the battleships will return one by one. They'll keep this up indefinitely, and you keep coming back to the belt every 10-15 mins or so and killing them off. Why stop at one? Maybe there's 2 or 3 good spawns in the system. Chain all of them. If there's others in the system ratting as well, tell them in Local what you are doing, and request they leave the support ships alone so that they'll chain properly. Occasionally the rats my vanish but you'll usually find them at another belt - they move around every hour or so. This is perfectly normal.
Sometimes you'll encounter support that warp scrambles you. This can be a pain when you want to chain because you want to warp off to another belt, but can't. but you can't kill the support else the battleships wont reappear. As this is 0.0, it's not a good idea to be scrambled in a belt, webbed, and unable to move. You COULD fit a couple of ECM mods and jam the frigate rats that scramble you. This is easier if you're in an armour tanking vessel as you'll have the spare mid slots. In something like a Raven or a Drake, this isn't so easy as your mid slots are taken up by your tank. It's up to you what you do here. Personally, I kill off the frigates as I don't want to risk being caught by an enemy gang, but that's just me.

Edited by: Ralara on 14/01/2008 13:18:31 2. Increasing your chances of a commander or officer spawn
There's a secret to how rats work. A spawn of rats is not random. Let's say we're in our 12 belt system and there's no one else around. It's just you ratting. You encounter a 3x cruiser and 2x frigate spawn of rats. Rubbish. So you ignore it - why waste your time on it? Well, there's a good reason to waste your time on it. If you kill it off, it is *replaced* with a slightly better spawn. Perhaps it'll be 3x battle cruisers and 3x cruisers. Not much better, sure. But you kill that one off too. That gets replaced by, say, a double 500k isk battleship spawn. Kill that, it gets replaced with a 650K spawn. Kill that, you get a 800k spawn...>>>>> triple 1.85 spawn (Assuming your system's sec status allows it).
Now this isn't always completely linear. You may find that it skips some steps - 500k > 800k for example. Again this is perfectly normal and nothing to be afraid of. The replacement spawn doesn't appear straight away, it takes the usual 5-10 minutes to respawn and it's not always in the same belt either! I am not exactly sure on the figures so I can't give you the equation, but if you rat in a system by yourself for a long time, you'll notice a general trend for the rats to get bigger and bigger and bigger.... and then all of a sudden they go rubbish again.
They go rubbish because you've reached the end of the "spawn" - once you've killed off the top spawn, it resets to a rubbish one, and the cycle starts again.
At the end of the cycle, there's a chance, a small one, that instead of resetting, you'll get a Commander Spawn, a hauler spawn or possibly an Officer spawn.
So it's a decision - if you chain every spawn (or most of them) you wont get many commander or hauler spawns, but overall you'll likely get more isk on average per hour. On the other hand, if you wipe through every spawn killing off everything, you'll have a higher chance of getting a commander or hauler spawn at some point, but overall the isk per hour will be less. It's up to you, how you play, and what your goal is, to make that decision.
Lies, damned lies and statistics
There are a lot of rumours about ratting - lots of supposed "secrets" to it. They're all pretty much *******s, frankly. What I've said above is everything there is to ratting effectively. Below are some of the lies, misinformation and mistakes that players spread amongst themselves. These well known "facts" are simply urban legends (or cosmic legends, I suppose) and you should ignore them. Better yet, correct them in public. Point them to this thread! Edumacate them!
"But my CEO said that..." I don't care. (S)He's wrong.
Mining in a belt will increase the chance of a rat appearing in that belt.
Leaving the cans alone will increase the spawn rate of rats.
Killing off all the cans (shooting them) will increase the spawn rate of rats.
Leaving a rat in half-armour when chaining will increase the speed (or in some versions "is required") to make the chain continue.
Chaining rats prevents you from getting a Commander spawn.*
Chaining rats will lead to poorer rats in the system.
The system will produce crappy rats if you "wear it out" by chaining or ratting excessively. Give it a few days to "calm down".
These are all wrong. Ignore them.
* This isn't so much a lie, it's more a misunderstanding of how the ratting system works. Chaining a rat spawn has no effect on if a commander will appear. Commanders (may) appear at the "end" of a cycle of a spawn. If you keep this cycle "stuck", it will of course never cycle through to get the chance for the commander to appear. If you are chaining every spawn in system, yes, you wont get a commander whilst chaining because the spawns are "stuck" at a certain level. They can't mature to their new cycle and thus have the chance to appear. If you kill off the chains completely, you'll get your chance like everyone else.
Think of it like rolling a dice. If you continually just pick up the dice and then put it down again, same side down as it was before (chaining) you wont ever get the chance to roll a 6, because you're always on 5. Do it 100 times in a row and you will always just have a 5 because you're not allowing the dice to roll. But the minute you stop doing that and actually roll the dice (kill off the spawn), you MAY get a 6. Odds are that you wont of course, but the chance is there.

nice guide, however i'd like to know if you could clarify this:
in a system with +-10 belts and 2 gates i get around 3-4 spawns. i chain the ones with battleships in it, however there is one spawn with just frigattes. i kill it totally over and over and over, and it always respawns with the same kind of rats. i don't get any "cycling" at all. why is that?

Any drone region ratters have any insight to how this applies to drones? I don't think drones have commander and officers, but I've heard they have Queens?
PS: This map (PDF) is good for finding out what the true security rating of a system is.

as requested by the OP, i'll copy&paste here some stuff i've posted in another post:
Originally by: Shenko Minara Not bad, but at least one issue you're wrong about.
I've found that clearing a spawn will generate a random spawn not 'the next one up'. Of course it's easy to say it is going up but skipping a random number of levels before cycling. Either way it seems to be random rather than structured.
well i replied to the FAQ post iteself, but anyways. i agree on this point, i think it's random, not structured. and the OP said he plays since 2005 and half the time ratting... he should know this.
Quote:
Also, re. faction ships (DG, Shadow, Domination), they can appear on *any* chained spawns. I'm not sure what you mean by getting it "stuck", but faction spawns can and will (given enough time) spawn into an existing, chained spawn.
i've never seen this happen myself... but it might be correct.
Quote:
Other than that, it's a good guide, but you haven't covered looting/salvaging.
my 2c about looting/salvaging: i usually rat max 2-3 jumps away from one of our outposts (with "our" i mean from my alliance or friendly alliances) basicly i do this with a 2nd account, but it's doable with just one account, just takes longer. in the system i rat i have 5 giant secure containers at a safespot. my main kills. my alt loots and salvages in a battlecruiser with 4 salvagers, 4 tractor beams and 2000m3 cargo. when full he leaves all cargo into those containers. when all 5 containers are full my alt switches into a hauler and brings all that loot into the nearest outpost for organization of the loot/salvage. in the meanwhile my main can keep killing and my alt will just have to catch up with hauling.
if you want to maximize profit, don't sell the salvage: build rigs (but this is a different topic) and you could haul certain modules to highsec for more profit (depends on markets in your region) and the rest of stuff just refine it into minerals. sell them or build ships. the better skills you have, the more profit you'll make out of what you have looted/salvaged.
another little hint: cap boosters sell well in pvp 0.0, so it might be worth picking them up. at least the 800, 400 and maybe 200 ones.

Nice guide.
Well when i was ratting in deklein i noticed that faction/commander spawns very often appeared around DT just before and just after. I shotdown god knows how many Dreads that way.
Also the more people in system tend to increase the chance of officer spawns. I collected 3 thon's in vf- in deklein.

It's not more people, it's that VF is a very low sec system (-0.875 IIRC) with a lot of belts so there's more chance of it appearing there (and, say, CCP-US) than EC-P8R.

True but i was in several system that has had lower sec but wasnt that well visited and tbh didnt even get near as many. Think it has todo with the fact that more people rat there, hence the rats gets recycled alot more.

Nice guide.
Two things to add...
1) Chaining used to be a sure thing, now it isn't. I've found more of the smaller rats will just disappear if you leave the belt. If you stay in the belt, they don't. So it's only a sure thing now if you stay in one belt. Chaining a whole system is still possible, but not the sure thing it used to be.
2) I've had several faction spawns appear in the belt within seconds after killing a spawn. Don't warp out right away...

Can you clarify one point?
If you have a spawn of say, 3 BS's and 3 frigates, if you kill off the 3 BS's and 2 of the frigs but leave the third frig alone, will the same spawn re-spawn? Or does engaging any of the frigs mess up the chain?
In other words, do I have to leave all the small support ships, or can I just leave one and still continue the chain?

If you leave just one frig out of a 3 frig, 3 bs spawn you have to wait for the respawns still. Technically I reckon its better not to kill frigs but just the bs.

The Drone commander spawns are called "Sentients." Drone Queens are just high-"bounty" (i.e. decent alloy drop) battleship spawns.

You can just leave 1 if you like. However it's actually not as efficient. As the spawn um.. respawns, they do so one ship at a time, sometimes taking 1-2 minutes between ships appearing, sometimes taking 5 minutes. If you've killed 3 BS and 2 frigs, those 2 frigs may respawn first - so you could be waiting up to 10 minutes just for a new BS to respawn whereas if you left all 3 frigates, you only need to wait for the BS themselves (the isk makers) to respawn.
Since frigs are rarely more than 20 or 30k isk, in comparison to, say, even a 500k isk battleship, it's simply not worth the time to kill them. Plus, I've found when laggy, my drones tend to go after the frigs moreso than the battleships and you can accidently end up wiping the spawn out entirely.

My thought on Angels and EM damage is that you should fit an EM hardener but not always run it. It gets painful when you have three BS shooting EM torps at you and you have zero resistance to it. As someone who hunted Angels for years, through all the changes to NPCs, I can't say I'd ever recommend not having EM resists.
Other than that one point, good post.

This would work. Alternatively you could fit a passive EM resistance amplifier or even an EM rig, depending on your fitting and skills.

well, actually it can be accurate... let's see this situation i have had several times:
a spawn. 2BS, 3 frigattes. i kill the 2 BS first, the 2 frigattes. let's say i stay at the belt. what did i get? i got this: - 1st BS respawns. i kill it - 2nd BS respawns. i kill it - now a 3rd BS respawns. i kill it - now a frigatte respawns. i leave that one and kill the frigatte i left alive before. - last but not least... another BS respawns.
basicly, i converted a 2BS spawn into a 4BS spawn. this does not always work (as it's probably luck bases, like everything) and if i leave belt to come back 15 minutes later, i can get a 3BS spawn, or again a 2BS spawn. the 4th BS shows only up if his respawn timer happens to occur when i am in the middle of killing the rest of his guys.
oh and PS: about rats running away... just fit a warp discruptor (20km, 1 point) if you want. this will also show pirates a damn nice lesson if they think they can come and kill a carebear easily. nothing funnier than popping an overheated domination webber on a vagabond, tackle him, and show him what 800mm autocannons are made of ;)

I'd like a fraps of that. It's not that I'm calling you a liar or anything, but I don't believe that is possible. I've tried, multiple times, combinations like that and all that's been achieved was the original spawn coming in stages.
Now if you kill a BS that respawns then another appears, kill it, another etc - that's just the BS respawning. They don't always respawn in the order you kill them.
Something I did omit from my original post was that chaining still works. The original chaining.
Some how, and I've not figured out how, I've (three times) managed to get BS upon BS upon BS to appear, at one point I was facing 6 BS! I had to warp out because I wasn't prepared for it.
I believe this is what you encountered. I believe this is actually a bug - somehow you CAN trigger a "chain" of rats like in the "good old days".
Again, I'm not certain the exact method - if I did know I'd report it as it's clearly unintentional. But it is at least possible.
The thing is, when I've generated these "proper chains" (so to speak), I've usually been ratting for ages and I'm not paying attention - I can't retrace my steps because ratting is so boring, I'm just F1-F6ing my raven and looking at the forums. Three times in 2 years that's happened to me. It's not enough to justify me paying 100% attention to all of my actions and the timings.
Quote: oh and PS: about rats running away... just fit a warp discruptor (20km, 1 point) if you want. this will also show pirates a damn nice lesson if they think they can come and kill a carebear easily. nothing funnier than popping an overheated domination webber on a vagabond, tackle him, and show him what 800mm autocannons are made of ;)
Doesn't work for rats. You can test it easily when you have a hauler spawn. ALWAYS if you kill the escorts (at least in my experience) first, the haulers vanish. I've actually tested scrambling the hauler whilst killing off the escorts and the haulers still vanish. I've also, occationally, gone ratting after a pvp op (not that efficient for a ratting setup but it can work). I've scrambled the rats for s**ts and giggles and sometimes they still vanish / move to another belt.
I can't equivocally state that it wont work at all, because the times they do despawn/vanish/move are rare anyway, to say nothing of the chances of my just happening to be scrambling them for fun whilst they do it. But they have vanished whilst under a scrambler for me in the past. I'm inclined to put this in the "it doesn't happen".
I mean, how many times do they vanish anyway? Les than 1 in ... 50 ish for me? When they do, they've moved to simply another belt anyway so I see no reason to use up a mid slot of the off chance that it might have some effect, when I can encounter them later anyway.

Concerning salvaging/looting:
If you're at all serious about good profits from ratting then you'll have a GSC can array (at a safespot, not at a: 1)belt 2)planet 3)moon 4)gate. At least 2 secure cans and make sure you set the pw. It's worth the time even after the latest compression nerf to save at the very least all guns you loot while ratting as well as all salvage. Put them in the cans in-system each time your cargohold fills. Sometimes the amount of time it takes to fill two or three secure cans with loot can coincide nicely with a faction spawn.
You come back at a later time with an itty V (or equivalent hauler) to all your belts that you've been ratting in all week and sort/melt/sell your loot once you get it back to safety.
As far as the racial ratting is concerned, I've found that both angel and sansha are the two most profitable, per hour. This is because most angel spawns attack well within tractor range and also drop the profitable salvage piece known as alloyed tritanium bars (used to make cargohold expansion rigs). Sansha rats don't have rats that orbit as closely as the angels do but their wrecks also contain a very valuable salvage piece, the melted capacitor console (used to make capacitor control circuit rigs).
I don't know what Serpentis drop, as I've never ratted for them. Guristas drop salvage that is consistent with making rigs for shields and tend to orbit out of tractor beam range (not all, but quite a few). This can slow you down (unless you're a rich bastard with a marauder) if you wish to salvage everything.
That is all I wish to add.
CCP - please stop with the nerfing and boost something already. |

That shouldn't happen. the tripple 1.85s are in the low end of the sec status - -0.15 shouldn't get them.
Commander spawns - yes, officer spawns - possible, but not tripple 1.85s. Can you tell me what system this was please?

That, I'm going to have to collate with other pilots. However, I confirm what you've observed. I was in a -0.2 system for months and the most we got was double 1.25s. When I moved out of there, I found a triple spawn. At the time, I didn't know they were even possible or part of the game.
Systems with high 0.0 sec status (-0.1 etc) don't get as good spawns as the low 0.0 sec status (-0.9 etc). As to what the limit is, I am not sure. It is certainly possible that it's a chance thing. Say, in a -0.1 system there's a 0.5% chance to get a tripple etc and a 99.5% chance not to get one... Although what must be 100s of hours of ratting in a -0.2 system I never got more than a double 1.25 ish.
I did get Domination spawns though - so Commander spawns are certainly possible in these systems, just rarer than the low sec 0.0.

Sounds like a rat sovereign system. If the NPCs have sovereignty over your system, the spawns will be delicious and the faction numbers high.

Yes I'm going to expand this shortly. NPC sov systems are all effectively "-1.0" for the purposes of rats. Take a sytem in Venal, any system - even the -0.1 systems - and you'll find triple 1.85s. I R BE KING (and queen) OF CHEESE! |

Another thing to point out, is that *NO* spawns have been "started" immediately after downtime. IE, immediately after downtime, each time you warp to a different belt, you will force a new spawn to appear. People use this technique to have a higher chance of getting a faction or officer spawn. Note that you can get faction spawns even in high sec systems, so this technique will work anywhere where rats can spawn.
Once a spawn has "started", as was mentioned by the OP, you have to "finish" it to have a higher chance of getting a faction/officer spawn.

Officer spawns appear in their home region, or in any region where their faction normally appears, but *only* in systems with -0.8 or below true sec rating.
Faction: Guristas/Pithi/Dread Guristas Home Region: Venal Officers: Estamel Vepas Thon Kaikka
Faction: Angels/Gisi/Domination Home Region: Curse Officers: Tobias Gotan Hakim Mizuro
Faction: Serpentis/Coreli/Shadow: Home Region: Fountain Officers: Cormack Setele Tuvan Brynn

Thanks for this list.
The Op seems to suggest that there are "home" systems and that if you rat closer to these "home" system there is a better chance that you will get that officer to spawn.
Is this not the case? Or are people who know not wanting to tell? I would think that with all the movement in 0.0 with Alliances pushing other Alliances out of areas that those who were pushed might be more inclined to post this info.

Id like to point out that it is possible to have commander spawns in low sec as in .4-.1 space in empire. had it happen in i think a .3 was mining at the time with a bs and was going wtf is this cruser. Why is it hurting so damn much and tanking so well. Dropped a Dark Blood RCU.

This guide needs a sticky, at least for a while.
The only thing I can think of to add is "how to negotiate ratting rights." Maybe a list of corps/alliances who don't pop you when they get bored, even though you payed them off.
(It didn't happen to me, but I've seen the whines.)
That, and maybe a good risk/reward analysis vs carebear mission running. I keep seeing people say that they make as much on average mission-running in .9 space, which I find hard to believe.

I don't find that hard to beleive at all. I have been doing a lot of missions, trying to get that faction up for a jump clone. Last night I got a storyline mission that gave me a clean 5 mil. This was for a level 3 currier mission, that was 2 jumps each way.
Granted, it was a storiline mission, but it was only level 3. So it would not be that much of a stretch to think that you can make maybe even more money then ratting in 0.0 space if you are daisy chaining level 4 & 5 missions. Even more so if you factor in the bounties in the combat missions.
Keep in mind that level 5 missions has you going againts capital ships.

EDIT: I did a little testing. Only a few waves, so it's not statistically significant but it's enough to cast doubt on the quality cycle thing.
Belt 1: 1) double 195k 2) 1 500k and two frigs 3) 1 150k cruiser and 3 frigs
Belt 2: 1) triple 500k, double 117.5k 2) 2 x 1250k and 3 frigs 3) 1 x 500k bs and 1 frig
Belt 3: 1) 1 x 500k, 2 frigs 2) 2 1550k and a frig 3) 1 x 500k bs and 1 frig
You fail at telling us what the true sec was in this system you tested the spawn sequenses at.
if 1.5 mill rat is the max spawn it restarts and goes back too low lvl spawns.
its also a good chance of spawns skipping a few levels upwards and if true sec isnt low enough then a level skip from 500 < 1550 will make you reach max level spawn in this system.
once that 1550 spawn is killed you start at scratch again with a low lvl spawn say a 500k bs.
ive never seen this guide before until i actually started explaining how officer spawning works to no other than the author of this guide ;p
and now that ive explaining it too Ralara and read this guide aswell its very clear that we have exactly the same experience to how this system works.

My quick testing indicated that it was random, though my sample was quite small. One belt went from double 195ks to a 500k bs to a 150k cruiser, showing no upward progression after 500k. The next belt in the same system went from triple 500k up to double 1.25mil but then down to single 500k again. The third belt went from single 500k to double 1.55mil and down to single 500k again.
It's possible that the second and third belt showed a progression and when they reset they skipped up to 500k again but the guide seems to indicate that each belt will eventually reach the maximum spawn for that system and while the third belt hit 1.55mil, the second did not. Even worse, the first belt went from a 500k bs to a 150k cruiser, showing absolutely no progression. In the absence of alternative explanations for the event, a single case of a spawn getting worse is enough to disprove the absolute rule of increasing progression.
Are you sure it's not just a case of confirmation bias? That you're noticing it when one spawn leads to a better spawn but not noticing when it leads to a worse one? Experience is fine but it's definitely open to bias. Have you ever collected statistics that people could analyse to find and prove spawn patterns with reasonable levels of certainty?
Personally, I don't really know either way but I haven't seen any significant data backing up any of the claims made by this thread. It's all gut instinct and as a scientist I can't accept that. http://www.eve-tanking.com Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. Your spawns per system formula is off, in my experience. I ratted in a system with 10 belts and 1 gate for 3 months and that system held a maximum of 6 chainable spawns.

I, too, am interested in how one goes about detirming the true security status of a system below 0.0. Is it represented in game at all or through some formula or on another site?

Edited by: Dillon Arklight on 27/03/2008 09:28:36 Heres a link to find the "true" security status of systems in EVE
http://eve.grismar.net/ssec/
Not sure how up to date it is, if anyone has a link which is known to be more accurate please feel free to post it.
Also i read your guide and id like to add ,if i may, a few tips to surviving while ratting in 0.0
The following is a few points to help you to avoid being killed by fellow players while ratting in 0.0
1. Location: Pick a system which is off any major highways and avoid systems which are frequently occupied. Use the Universe Map to see how many jumps potential ratting systems have had in the last hour to give you an idea of how frequently traveled your system is. Even if a system has 20+ belts and great spawns it's not worth it if your safe spotting every few minutes because a hostile comes into local...which leads to point 2.
2. Safe Spot: Every time a hostile comes into local warp to a safe spot and cloak(you really should have one fitted), or failing that go to a POS /Station. If you imagine that every hostile which comes into local is looking for a person ratting your wont go far wrong. Even if you see him on scanner and hes only in a frigate, you never know how many of his friends are 1 jump away.
3. Local: This really should be second nature to every 0.0 player but i will repeat it just to emphasise it KEEP AN EYE ON LOCAL. The "Local" window is your first line of defence and should be kept in plain sight always.
4. In at 100km : Warp into the belts at the greatest range your setup allows. Most scouts will warp to a belt at 0km if they believe a person is ratting there. If you rat at 100km then it will give you extra time to get out before your tackled.
5. Align : Once you in a belt then align for your safe spot as soon as you can and move at full speed (mwd/ab off). This means that as soon as a hostile appears you can warp instantly.
There are a few "advanced" rules that you can also follow to be extra safe.
6. Distance From Gate: If you can try to rat in belts which are not scannable from any gate. This means if a hostile comes into local he will not be able to tell which belt you are in without warping around the syatem. Hopefully by the time he scans all the belts you wont be in any of them but in your safe spot and cloaked.
7. Bubbles: If you planning on doing some hard core ratting , say over a few days or a week, then it may be worth putting Mobile Warp Disruption Bubbles over the gates of the system you are in. This is really only a valid option in 1 or 2 gate systems which are well out of the way. A bubble will give you extra time to safe spot if a hostile comes into local as they will have to get out of the bubble to warp to the belt you are in.
8. Alts: If you can have an alt character in the system 1 over from where you are ratting to give you advanced warning if someone is going to jump in on you. Or if your feeling brave then you will also be able to see if the hostile in local with you has any friends, if he dosent you may want to try to kill him.
Thats about all i can think of for now. Nice guide Ralara, thanks for taking the time to make it.

Nice guide but i got a question, i live in Stain region but our lowest sec status in whole stain is -0.36 and the constalation where i live has a max sec of -0.1903 does that mean we get bad rats in stain? and if we moved we would get better rats?
And does it matter if there is a station in your ratting system?

Yes you can find better rats, but you have more chance of finding Officers in NPC space.

Well from the mouth of one of the GMs that replied to a thread with that question (I think the question was "where can I find estamel")...
"You'll Find Estamel Ta..(cant spell it) around the station systems in Venal."
I've had more officer encounters in the vercinity of station systems (0-2 jumps) than I have when I've been 10 jumps from them, but they're such a rare occurance that it's difficult to judge.
Another 10-20 officer spawns and I'll be able to look at the data properly. So if CCP could arrange that for me, that'd be swell :-))))) -- Ralara / Ralarina

I'm not sure if I am revealing an unspoken and tightly held secret, or just publishing well-known fact, but the "cycling" mechanic of belt rats also applies to missions, at least in my observations.
I have spawned faction battleships in missions from cycling. When I run World's Collide IV several times for the sweet sweet bounties and loot from the hordes of Battleships in that mission, by the fifth or sixth time I clear it, all the 850k isk bounties will have upgraded to 1.2 - 1.5m isk bounties and occasional Shadow Serpentis battleships and battlecruisers spawn.
Just pointing this out on a side note, don't want to derail your thread.

After ratting in fountain i have noticed that the true sec status really doesnt have an effect on the number of faction/officer spawns you get I ratted in a JGOW which has a true sec status of -0.0482. In a full days ratting(10 hours or so) i got 2 officer spawns and 4 shadow spawns.
I also found that in a given system you have maybe 4-5 spawns at one given time regardless of the number of belts. its best smaller number of belts ie less then 10. In terms of loot you can increase the isk you make by about 30% by just picking the good loot ie large guns/lanchers, mwd's, named items, hardners. Leave the rest these items have the best isk/m3 ratio. For example 20k m3 of this prime loot can be sold for about 300-400 mil.
Another thing is that hauler spawns can drop named mining upgrades these are rare and some are very valuable so it's a good idea to check.

Originally by: sexygheyman After ratting in fountain i have noticed that the true sec status really doesnt have an effect on the number of faction/officer spawns you get.
I have also found this to be the case. I have been in Fountain, Venal and Tribute in my time and here is what I have found:
The number of Officer/Factions spawns is proportional to the distance from the factions home constelation. For example ratting in m-o in fountain only a couple of Shadow Serpentis appeared each day. However ratting in a system of the same true-sec in the Minotaur constelation in fountain (very close to the Factions NPC stations) was a lot more fruitful and we saw roughly 1 officer spawn a week and 3-5 Shadow Serpentis spawns a day.
Simular could be said for ratting in Tribute and Venal but to a much more extreme difference between the two. Very rare is it to find a Dread Guristas spawn in Tribute some days none would be found when solo ratting a system. In venal on the other hand Dread Guristas spawns are much more common often finding a couple a day.
The quality of said Dread Spawns is better in Venal with them much more frequently being battleships than battlecruisers and cruisers. In short if you want to have a good chance of officer spawns I find that NOT CHAINING and being in an area close to the Factions home system is much more fruitful. Remember the best space is deep 0.0 so don't expect wonders ratting in Tribute or Cloudring!
With regards to the true sec status of a system I have heard several times that it doesn't reflect the quality of rats and I agree. So what does it mean? Well what it gives is a value of the space so a -1.0 system will have plenty of Crokite and Bistot around to keep the mining monkeys happy.
Pro Tip: If you ever get a hauler spawn stay in that system as I have found on roughly 1/2 of the occasions where I got a hauler spawn a faction rat would spawn there relatively soon. (ie The next couple of spawns) This would often be in the same belt when I pointed this out to corp members they began to notice the same.

When you are ratting in NPC O.0 territory,is there one system that counted as a "home" system for that particular faction,or is the entire egion counted as "home "space? I rat in stain and have never been lucky enough to see a officer spawn, although some other members of my corp have.
And it is indded possible to "chain" spawn like of old, I've personally seen a triple 1.85 spawn re-appear,while i was busy dealing with the frigs from the last spawn that had me warp-scrambled...

Commander Katman here....
Ralara... mate i must say this info/intel on ratting is 10/10 (DED) style hehe
well i have been in 0.0 for a long time in a few very good areas ( now in stain ) what i will say is i would have to agree with what you said in respect to well all of it... i
have spent way more time than one person should in the belts and in the last year have had over 150 dread spawns and well over 50 hauler spawns ( stoped counting after this lol) and have had allmost every drop u can think of from faction towers to rattle snakes bpc's to omga implants and a s**t load more, and thats before i moved to stain, in the last week alone i have had 11 true sansha spawns and 4 haulers... still working on the officers ;) but this info matchs up with my findings aswell and its nice to know my tactics are all ok .
i have a mate in my alliance that has found a very interesting tactic to hunt officers and officers only and in the last 6 weeks he has had over 16 officer spawns in a 8-13 system area... lucky git... rather than post it here (till its checked and tested) i'l mail you in game with our findings for now !
by the way i have done 100's if not over a 1000 plex's and had untold x-type/a-type and sexy faction drops. and have done (allmost) every plex eve has to offer some of witch were insane and uber hard allso very rare finds and have a mass of info if you want to start up a post on it in the future.
thanks for taking the time to right this and to read my post allso.

all i can say about the 16 officers above is wow if its true, but anyways i've found that in npc systems the true sec doesn't seem to dictate the chance of an officer a great deal as my corp currently rat in a lower sec 0.0 then before, yet the spawns are of a lower quality for a longer period of time before higher spawns appear as well as less officer and faction spawns and the ones that do spawn have poorer loot.
oh and to the above poster any chance of the info about the officer tactic?

Haven't tried it like this yet, but a friend of mine (new player) got a Commander spawn in a level 3 mission not long ago. In the 3 years that I've played I've never seen a Commander spawn in a mission before, and I've done a lot of them, but it seems like it is possible, must be very very rare though. EDIT: unless it was a storyline mission that always has a Commander in that particular mission... I have no clue. |

Can someone clarify a chaining question for me?
Say there's 3 frigates/destroyers and 2 battleships. Should I kill the battleships only, or should I kill the battleships and 2 of the smaller ships? Is there then a chance of the smaller ships spawning as bigger ones?

Nope, no chance of them changing type. You can kill them if you like, as long as you leave one, but it's not really worth the time; besides, chains don't usually reappear all at once, they appear one by one with a few minutes gap in between them. So if you kill off 2 of the 3 smaller ships, you may end up waiting an extra 10 minutes just until the BS respawn...
so, "no" :) --

I believe this to be the case (that they can spawn anywhere in 0.0). Personally, I've only encountered them in Venal (where every system may as well be -1.0 for ratting purposes) but I've known a couple of people who've had them in Deklein in CCP-US which is, off the top of my head, a -0.993 system.

New to ratting i made a plan afther reading this post. I had to get some income to supply my shiplosses, and couldnt stand more missionrunning. My observations are as following afther ratting about every day for som hours in 2 weeks.
first i ratted in a 0.07 system. It was dead end and tons of belts. Didnt have any competition and no reds / roams came to visit me . Rats never got higher than 1m i think.
Moved my cans and ammo to a -0.7xx system: Not that many belts, but rats are good. Lots of 1.5m+ spawns and some factionspawns. The wierd thing afther ratting there for 1,5 weeks is that i never got any faction bs...only cruisersized factionspawns. Not that it watters that much. Needed to increase my sec status and wallet, and the drops made a NICE income. Never did see an officer spawn there, and nobody i talked to that ratted there/visited had ever seen or heard of a officer in that system or area.
btw: its not npc region.

Officers can spawn anywhere, but anecdotal evidence suggests that the likelihood is MUCH higher in rat sovereign systems ("NPC 0.0").
I've personally gotten two officers in Vale of the Silent (Thon and Kaikka), and had a corpmate also get one.

Very nice guide Ralara!
Just 1 question: you said you'll find the 1.85mil BSses closer to the bottumn of the negative scale. So that would be from -1.0 to -0.7. However I'm seeing this different: I ratted a lot back in the days at y-4 ( where you guys are now ;) ). I saw lots of usurpers, while y-4 is only -0.19.
Now I'm around a system called 7-UH4Z and its sec. rating is -0.36. But I've never seen a usurper yet...
Is this dependent on other factors? Thx in advance.

Now I'm around a system called 7-UH4Z and its sec. rating is -0.36. But I've never seen a usurper yet...
Is this dependent on other factors? Thx in advance.
Might be that y-4 has guristas sov, if it is so then the truesec doesn't matter as it's considered to be -1.0 for spawn purposes afaik.

I was always under the impression that an officer could spawn in any 0.0 system. Which is correct?
I believe this to be the case (that they can spawn anywhere in 0.0). Personally, I've only encountered them in Venal (where every system may as well be -1.0 for ratting purposes) but I've known a couple of people who've had them in Deklein in CCP-US which is, off the top of my head, a -0.993 system.
If anyone's had an officer spawn in less than -0.8 can you confirm this please?
Got Kaikka in -0.7 in branch a long time ago.

I very much like this guide. It was very informative, and that is critical for me, as I'm a carebear professional ratter. I have a few questions, though.
1.) If I'm ratting in a pirate-owned area, I really couldn't feasibly use their stations, right? I would have to haul and store my own stuff? Also, are these faction null-sec areas heavily camped?
2.) I have noticed that I have found commander ships a lot more often in high-sec than when I rat in low-sec for hours. My mining alt has found most of the ones scouting asteroids. Is this because people are killing far more rats due to miners, or is there a greater chance in high-sec?
3.) Is there any point in doing Cosmic Anamolies? The foes are far more demanding on my ship, but I don't seem to find anything special. Am I getting a lot more salvage per hour this way, or should I just keep ratting in the belts?

I'm not so sure about the wipe everything increases chances part. The way i rat is what ppl call chaining: wipe the rats unless there are BSs of 1.1 or more (sometimes i only leave groups with spawns of 1.5mil or more), in that case leave the smaller frigate/support so the BSs respawn again. I was doing this at -0.005 or something, nothing spectacular like a -1.0 (where i didn't find much different rats, just nice minerals); from time to time the "Commander" class would appear, usually in a cruiser with a couple of support bs, sometimes in a bs with 2 more bs supporting, sometimes the haulers, maybe once a day or every two days; not doing more than 2 or 3 hours. In that cheap system, one day after just 1hr of the usual i found 4 BSs class rats in a belt, now thats strange, one of them having a funny name and a 20mil bounty; so yes, one of the infamous officers and he dropped a Modified Cap Recharger valued 3 Bil 2 weeks ago (currently evil merchs want to drive down the price). And no, i did not wipe all the rats, just the worthless ones, and kept a few belts as usual. So i wouldn't say its not luck or if you can increase/decrease chances by wiping everything, but its more effective to leave the high value spawns and not think too much about the Officer, but the Commander is much much easier to spot, also the haulers.
I am not sure the terms are correct here, shouldn't the Commander be the one with the 20mil Bounty and modified items with his name? -- Wine + fix |

Question:
1. is there any way you can influence the spawning of rats after DT with your actions before DT? as in if youa re very uber cool and pro at chaining will the rats after DT be better?
2. Will the chain survive if the BS is left alive and the support is killed? [ please dont start explaining me that this is not recommended and it aint worth it blah blah blah ]

Yes mate if your drones auto aggro and pop the suport fleet, then u can leave a BS and the rest will respawn again. (done it myself). And no... DT resets all systems, nothing you can do to alter it for the better.
Hope this helps.

Are BSs practically required for 0.0 ratting? I'm a new-ish player with a little bit over 1 mill SP, and I'm guessing I'm no where near close enough to being able to rat efficiently in these areas. Just getting tired of missioning already :P
I do have a nice passive tanked hurricane setup, but the problem is, of course, that I can't currently afford to lose this ship.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned yet in the thread and it might go sticky I'll add a great post I found while googling for info on drone ratting. Written by someone named Mother Drone 2008.01.14 in an similar thread.

EliteCruiserRank1: Strain Viral Infector Drone EliteCruiserRank2: Strain Violator Drone
All drone battleships can drop up to 200m¦ in alloys. The higher the rank the better the chance for a "good" amount of alloys BUT it is not a straight ladder like bounties. Even a Drone Queen can give laughable amounts of alloys and a Drone Controller can give phat loot. So the true sec status is less important for ratting compared to systems with regular bounty rats. Cruiser/frig sized drones are simply not worth to be looted. When salvaging drones you can receive all possible salvage loot ... e.g. Alloyed Tritanium Bar or Melted Capacitor Console but very small amounts. The average salvage loot of drones is really bad.
There are neither officer spawns nor hauler spawns but faction/commander spawns called "Sentient..." as already said. These commanders have no regular alloys and if you are lucky you can get some building parts needed for T2 rigs. Since Trinity they drop some stuff for manufacturing the new metadrones."

Ralara, while this is a good guide to ratting in some ways, it's a very poor guide in other ways. I do not believe that you can write a good ratting guide without telling people how to SURVIVE in 0.0. Off course you can point me to other guides that aim to do just that, but in my experience most of these guides are either completely outdated or very incomplete. It would be nice if you wrote your own guide to survival in 0.0 the way YOU see it. Hell, I might even PAY you for it if you do a good job.
I did mining and ratting in low sec and 0.0 systems, but the harsh reality of it is such that there's simply not a single guide I was able to find that helps...
1)I found, that many times, a player cant even get to 0.0 from empire space without getting popped on the way. It's as simple as that. There's all kinds of advice on how to avoid gate camps, but in reality the campers are very clever and devious people, they have an interdictor in their gang most of the time, and they manage to pop me anyway. If I cloak, they bump me with an interceptor. If I am too fast for them, they will just use smartbombs which will shake the screen violently, (or if effects are turned off) will still slow down the game to the crawl and own just about any ratting ship in a few seconds, sometimes even a split second. (and no I do not have a slow computer, my internet connection is fast, and yes, I always warp to zero)
So let me ask you this:
a)How the hell do you roll through interdicted gatecamps in a raven? ;) b)How much of a big deal is it to you to lose 90+ million in 5 seconds? c)How fast do you make this same amount of isk ratting?
2)Many people say that once you get to 0.0 space it's relatively easy to find a secluded empty system where you can rat in peace for at least few hours a day. In reality this is not so. There are people just about everywhere at all times. (in my experience at least) It seems that there is constantly someone out there out to get me. I cant be left alone even for an hour no matter where I go! At this point ratting is no longer enjoyable, it becomes a struggle filled with constant paranoia.
3)Logistics.
Correct me if I am wrong, but it's probably a good idea to go deep into 0.0 space to find that nice system where you can rat... But when you do that, you still have to go back to empire at some point to sell off your loot. At this point, there's yet again a pretty good chance you wont make it back in one peace. Assuming you do not have a second account to scout ahead, and no friends to help you, how do you deal with this issue?
I am sure that someone will come in now, and tell me to stay my carebear ass in empire space, but if I wanted to do that, I wouldn't be posting here. I am asking these questions so that I can learn to do things I don't know how to do.

Edited by: Tagami Wasp on 16/05/2009 19:41:11 Two ways to solve your issues: 1) Join a null-sec alliance. Ask and listen to the rest of your comrades tips. 2) Go into NPC space, carrying the BPCs of the ratting fit you want to take with you. Minimum run, cheapest possible BPCs you can find, for the highest ME possible. You can build a BS and rat, till the 0.0 denizens come looking for you. And they will. If you are lucky and skilled, you may last a couple of months (although I know of people that lasted years). Having a JF will solve a lot of your problems, but requires alt or buddy, which you don't want to include.
However, I suggest that you join an alliance. It's a MMORPG, is it not?

Well I appreciate the comment but that's up to the individual player - some will be in PvP alliances, some might be renters or pets of others, some have a NBSI policy some have a NRDS... I can't cover all of that and there's already many guides on that subject. The aim of my guide was and is simply to explain the most isk efficient way to rat - to get the most out of your time (since few people actually enjoy ratting - it's quite boring if you do it a lot).
So I'll leave it to others to make those guides - I'll just let people know how to rat the most efficiently.
I'll update the guide shortly for Sleeper spawns too.

There are a hell of alot of replies so apologies for not reading them all,
A corp mate and i have found something out, dont ask how it happend and my corp mate should find himself lucky.
We were in a true sec 0.98 system before and after Downtime, we got a Faction spawn before downtime following the exact procedure you explained which is great, it works and theres no doubting it. But, as for the respawns i think something has changed of late with the new updates and fixes, which i must admit i am quite chuffed with (altho my corpmate nearly wasnt)
Basically i fleet up and head out in my raven and "populated" the belts, because of the whole warp in the rats do rather than just appearing i fly thru the belts and move on as i see the rats warp in, ill stick around if its a faction/officer but otherwise i move on. once the belts are populated and i check the gates for rats too.
I begin, i grab the agro in he warps in the salvager rat pops he grabs it and does his job, i finish off the belt killing everything and move on, not more than 1 minute passes and theres more rats on his ass and this time they are bigger and harder (just as you predicted with the cycle increases) now i know youre probably thinking meh, its probably just out of another belt that. Incorrect, the same rats are in the belts as i left them, this is a new spawn.
It seems to me that either by leaving someone in the belt u just destroyed or by instantly salvaging the wrecks that some sort of script or coding recognises that there should be rats in the belt and instantly respawns them.
Try it out and report back your findings but ever since then others in my corp have tried it with the exact same results.
We ratted there for 4 hours 1 hour before DT 3 hours after we got 2 Faction spawns and then another corp mate joined him and in a further 2 hours they got a further 2 faction spawns.
