So, in my geekdom, while I was bored at work, I was thinking about EVE. I was thinking about how many people work/live on the ships in a roleplaying manner. Yeah, most frigs are a couple of people, cruisers are a hundred or more, Battleships are probably thousands. Capitals and super capitals are essentially flying cities, with Titans housing probably millions of people.
So then I thought about how big the stations must be. And if a station can have a whole crap load of ships docked, they must be HUGE. So then I wondered, if a station has, say, 50 ships docked at a busy system, well, I can't even imagine how big it is compared to real life.
Well, that naturally led to me wondering about how many people live on a station. I wouldn't even venture to guess. Maybe 10 million? And how many stations are there in EVE?
So this is my question to you, what is a very general guess of the population that lives only on Stations and Outposts?
Taking it a next step, what about POSes? They have a minimal crew on them. Is it even possible to make an estimate?
I don't like my sig.

according to 'show info' the life factor of all planets in EVE is 0. Even on the capital planets where you can actually see cities

there is/used to be a 'life' number when you did show info on a planet. It always read 0 though, even on the planets that you can clearly see signs of population (caldari prime etc)

I wasn't accounting planets because I thought that would be WAY to much to think about. I mean just trying to figure out how many stations there are is kinda nuts. And I'm lazy, so I turn to the forums for this!

Edited by: Apollyon X on 15/01/2008 05:24:00 According to my calculations, there are approximately 47,043,346,234,552 people in the EVE universe. However, this is just an approximate number that I rounded up.

Considering many stations aren't there for the sole purpouse of housing people but to eg refine, conduct research, build things, teach pupils, hold offices and store stuff ect it'll probably vary alot. My guess would be a couple of millions to a few thousands... but then again one can only guess.

I'd say there's about 100 people on a Battleship, 500-1000 on capitals and quite a bit more on supercaps. I would think stations had a fairly large population base, but typically no more than 10,000 per.
Between all the currently active player ships in EVE there's prob then around 20Mil people with another 10mil or so as station populance. There has to be some people in those NPC ships too (from CONCORD to Guristas) so the total space-based population could be hmmm... 35mil? dosen't seem very much

Iirc there is a backstory piece saying that an average Scorpion has a crew of about 2000.

It's easy enough to get a rough estimate of station population.
First we look at something closer to home, Manhattan. Thios island is about 57 km2 and has somewhere between 1.5 and 1.9 million people.
Now our typical station is 40 km or more across and, for the purposes of living space, we'll say 2 km high. That still leaves quite a lot of room for industry and docking facilities.
Now let's say that manhatten has aroun 300m of vertical space along with its 57km2 footprint. Our Station has between 6 and 7 times that capacity for living space, because of the increased available vertical space.
So a typical station would probably have enough space for about 9 million people and still have plenty of room for all the industry it needs. But that would start to feel a little crowded so lets say there is a limit of about 3 to 4 million people for comfort and for the sake of easier life support.

read the backstory of EVE. Each ship carries 1 person, the capsuleer and he can see the ouside of the ship through an orbiting camera drone apparently.
Nothing afaik is said in the backstory about passengers, infact it emphasizes that each ship holds 1 person - the pod pilot.

You have to remember that the stations are quite hollow to make room for the enormous docking bays they have, not to mention the facilities neccessary to actually keep the on-board population fed, breathing and warm. Then the fact they arn't designed primarilly for residential purposes means that figure is likely to be MUCH lower.

You apparently don't know how to read, because there is plenty of background info about how most ships bigger than frigates have substantial crews. Hands of a Killer is just one off the top of my head.
Then there's a dev saying straight up that ships have crews.

There was a thread about the number of crew in ships sometime ago, where even a dev responded, stating the sizes. From what I remember a Frigate only have one crewmember, the capsuleer, destroyers got a crew between 50 and 100, cruisers between 100 and 200, battlecruisers around 500, battleships vary alot. (These numbers are pulled out of my memory, but might as well be pulled out of my ass)
You used to be able to read the basic number of crew on a ship on blueprints, where it was stated the amount of people working there.
IIRC a megathron had 3200 crewmembers.
If anyone got a link to the thread, or the old blueprints I would appreciate it. Personally I am too lazy to find it.

Whatever that number is that must be big so that NPC'ss can take the losses iflicted on them by podpilot population. Mostly those poor pirate factions. I'm alone killing few hundred battleships on good missionwhoring day with crew of approx 15 000 per battleship (old screenshots listing crew numbres are base for that number). That means I'm killing approx 3 million in pirate crews per day (well give or take some, there is ofc cruisers and other smaller ships also, but their crew is a lot smaller than battleships). Not to mention approx 12 bil in isk damage (with average cost of say 60 mil per npc battleship).
Now multiply those losses by the number of mission runners and add losses inflicted by 0.0 polulation. There is easily billion or more NPC crewmebers slaugtered by podpilots each day. That is approx 360 billion deaths per year. Assuming that they multiply like rabbits oh... say 5% population growth per year it would mean that there is approx 7200 billion people living under pirate sov.

Well I'd say quite a bit more than 1 bil per day are dying in firey explosions if you alone are causing 3mil. There are well over a 1000 hardcore mission runners alone, I'm sure. That's 3bil. Plus all the 0.0 ratters. Plus ships lost to PVP.
5 billion dying per day would be a good guess. So that brings it to about 36 trillion just under NPC pirate flags if we assume a %5 population growth is needed. We could be dwindling their numbers over time, or vast cloning / test tube farms could be the norm.
And again, this is just regarding NPC pirates and associated colonies. Then you have to factor in all the pod pilot ships and crews (as stated above, anything larger than a frigate does indeed have a crew besides the pod pilot), 5 million per station (going by an above estimate), other NPC coorporations, and finally planets. Since space is seemingly not where most people reside by going off another backstory, can't remember the name now. I'll look for it later, but it stated that planet economies were becoming worried about space-economies starting to have control despite their vastly bigger population.
I'd guess an average of 10000 stations (2 stations per system? 5000 systems?). I may be way off here, as I don't spend a lot of time roaming 0.0. So 5mil x 10000 is 50 trillion just in stations though.
Thinking about it all in context gives me a headache, but it's a really really large number. 500 trillion maybe.
