As somebody who has been playing this game since the Fall of 2002, it's sad to see new players leave without them fully realizing the potential of this game. I can totally understand the frustration of losing days, weeks, month's and even years worth of work. You feel like quitting and cursing those evil developers who allowed an injustice to dissapear into the vast void. However, once you calm down you realize it was not a big deal, take your lesson home, and start over.
EVE is a harsh environment but the forums take the cake. This culture of hostility towards quitters was around even during beta and it's sad to see it become even nastier. I wish the community was a bit more constructive because a helping hand can make a difference is growing the playerbase. Even if it means an extra player or two.
You all know word of mouth is a powerful weapon. A player who quits because of an insignificant bad experience will turn around and make a huge dramatic story about it. If that means 2 of his friends will not play just to follow his lead, that's a loss. As much as we all get annoyed with N00bs, we need them to keep growing this game so we can enjoy it for years to come and have more targets.

You have your mom's credit card, you pay your subscription fees, and you help power level newbs in WoW. The other life is also lived in computers, where you go by the pod pilot callsign Brent Anderson, and are guilty of virtually every Eve-Online faux pas known to this forum. One of these lives has a future, Mr. Anderson, and one of them does not. I'm going to be as forthcoming as I can be, Mr. Anderson. You're here because you thought Eve was going to be a joyride. We know that you've been podded by a certain individual: A man who prowls low sec looking for easy kills. Now, whatever you think you know about this man is irrelevant. He is considered by many newbs to be the most dangerous man alive. But we're willing to wipe the slate clean, Mr. Anderson. Give you a fresh start. And all that we're asking in return is your swift retreat back to the World of Warcraft, and the distribution of "your stuff" to us.

That's true, but there is something you neglect here. It's also quite possible he has 2 other friends that go "wow, you mean you can kill people and inflict serious (virtual) loss on them and it's within the rules? Where do I sign up". Ideally these friends would be a little less hell bent on just killing stuff for fun but you get the idea.
The other point I'd like to make is that the OP is, I believe, a troll.

err, you just toggled that option when you jumped in low sec there's even a little warning window that pops up when you first attempt to go to a low sec system, remember? you agreed, now learn to live with the consequences of your decisions and stop blaming them on CCP
Originally by: Brent Anderson he for his own amusement Destroyed 2 weeks of playing and working..... and all desire to ever play again. That just lost CCP 120-160 dollars a year...because I will not play anymore.
yeah but your death may have cause the so-called griefer to just give CCP $120 to subscribe for a year of EVE because it was such a fun experience for him killing your ship (as well as reading the OP )

1) i think youre trolling 2) ill bite anyway:
eve HAS toggleable pvp! its just not as simple as setting a flag, it involves different variables:
.)fit warp core stabs. MAIN part of pvp flag. disables your own ability to start pvp too, somewhat .)fit istabs and nanos to get into warp faster. .)STAY THE FECK OUT OF LOSEC. you cant got to a pvp arena and have the pvp flag OFF, now, can you? .)advanced pvp flag technique, optional, greatly increases survivability: GTFO when ****oo hits the overview. .)advanced pvp flag technique, optional, greatly increases survivability: learn to use the scanner.

I've lost multiple MONTHS of work in a matter of seconds. Yet here I am, still having fun. :)
I must have easily lost 2 years worth of work (15bil or so) over time. Out of all the isk I've EVER made only a 1/3rd of the net worth still remains...
Not that I miss it. It's a common misconception that having lots of ISK means you'll suddenly be having lots of fun.

Originally by: Ephemeron On related note, I think CCP needs to emphasize to new players that EVE is not like the other MMORPGs they might be used to. That EVE is a hardcore game, where people fight each other all the time and even the high sec isn't completely safe.
Tutorials should include basic PvP survival courses, which should cover such topics as: What is NBSI and why people do it in low sec. How to use local as scout tool How to use directional scanner as scout tool The mechanics of warp scramblers and their counters: EW, stabs, cloaks
Armed with that basic knowledge, new players like Brent would be less likely to have wrong impressions.
I support this (partially because I still don't know what the scanner is or where to find it)
One thing that is in the tutorial though is security status and its role, but that concept appears to be lost on some people

1 account -character sold via character transfer to buddy who needed a pvp character. Gave him all isk and 2.5-3 billion in assets -eat me. This account -terminating character -gave away all isk (1.8 billion) -again eat me.
Quitting simply because RL 1.0 isn't compatible with Eve in any form. Even patching RL 1.0 to include Eve isn't going to happen. After 3 years of playing, some missioning, some pvp, some 0.0 life and ratting/pvp, eve has just gone downhill to where the only real 0.0 combat is nanofagging and blobbing. Take in uber giantic epeen fleet, blob enemy station, blow up medical, then blow up cyno jammer -drop capitals -game over for enemy. OR... Take in nanogang that requires 2x the fleet of specialized ships to counter or if they are a nanoblob of 50+ hacs averaging 5000m/s just fob off all system activity, blob the undock...
Eve has become so bloody boring. CCP is working on the lag, so fleet combat is smooth, but it never will be unless you got connections and can tell CCP to buff resources to prime systems so nodes don't pop like brain cells from mining.
To all who have let eve consume them... it's a game. CCP has a great system by which the player must get hooked in with the early rapid training and the classic carrot/stick approach. Reminds me of the old anti-drug advertisement of the coke addict running the circle of dependency. If EVE shuts down tomorrow -simply pulls the plug- you can either embrace life or retreat into fantasy and illusion. Put your time online into life where the rewards might not be as glamorous, but they are real. Too many MMO players -and I have been quite guilty of this- escape from the life much like one retreats into the bottle or drugs. Their RL family members suffer in much the same way as if they had a severely alcoholic or drug addicted parent. EVE is just another "fix", another escape -an illusion. Get involved in RL 1.0 again. Get into your friends, family, churches.
Sure, some can just hop in and play for 1-2 hours, have some giggles... I ain't one of them. I log in and 7 hours fly by as I try to reach the next carrot on the path. This has been an interesting experiment.
To all "in-game" friends of Futher Bezluden, Shodana/Flaming Butterfly, fly safe, remember to enjoy RL more than EVE.
