M$, as most probably know are going to kill XP at the end of June, I found this petition to ask M$ not to kill it! Now I am not trying to start a Vista debate here, all I will say is the Vista experience has been a mixed bag for a lot of people. So this isn't a Poo-poo Vista thread or a Vista is God thread. I just don't want to see XP go yet and make me (Eventually) have to buy something I neither want or need!
(I'm sure I will have to upgrade to something eventually, but I would like to have a good fallback!)
I say prep for dustoff, nuke the site from orbit...

Yeah, they are, but they are not going to sell any more OEM or Shrinkwrap versions after June (Well thats the plan anyways)!
So if you got a copy/license your good, but if you want to buy after that point your only choice is to get Vista, or switch to Linux!

I use vista, as does everyone in my home!
Doesn't particularly concern me, oh well!
Good Luck with that.

I enquired in the first one
jees, you people and perpetuating arguments...
Either way, its a business decision for them, they want people to move onto the new OS which is fair enough, i mean its their product, its not as if they are stopping people from using XP anyway.
I build some low end/budget machine's for people as well as higher end gaming rigs, for the lower end machine's Vista is not really suitable and I would still like the choice is all!

If you have an OEM copy of XP its not supposed to be installed on any box apart from the one it came with.
The retail license lets you install it wherever you like, but only upto five activations before you have to ring Microsoft and beg them to let you use the software you've bought.
will the end of support for XP mean you can no longer request new activation details for retail copies? [IMAGE REMOVED] |

I agree totally, the problem is I don't have a lot of money to stock up! I usually build directly to order with money up front for components/software. Being in the industry allows me to buy at cost but I don't have the capital!
Originally by: ry ry will the end of support for XP mean you can no longer request new activation details for retail copies?
I believe activation will still work for a while (Not sure how long)! It's just being pulled of the shelves so you wont be able to get any new copies (no biggy)/license (Problematic)!

i have this theory: if vista is fundamentally broken in the first place, it will run the course of windows me (or was it 98? the one that was a "branch" in the os line, as it died out rather soon, while the 2k line was continued)
although there IS this small possibility, that ecen in that case M$ doesnt care anymore, and will just overrun us with money. and vista.
im happy i started to learn to use linux months ago.

I spent 3 days installing Gentoo once, it wasnt very pleasant Still would prefer it over Vista. I've had to fix over a dozen driver issues on pcs from friends/family already, its a frikking nightmare. MS shutting down XP support and thus slowly forcing everyone to go vista wont make things any better im afraid.

So, if they stop selling it, does it mean it's ok to pirate it ?

Unfortunatly not until the copyright runs out, unless you get a legal pirate copy from Antigua!

Good question, probably not though!
The lawyers would probably argue that outside Antigua they retain the rights to the product and any copies made would resolve back to normal copyright law!

You know, it's only happening like this because not enough people are running Vista. MicroSlop needs more Open Beta Testers to find all the bugs - I mean... Release Users to find all the "Undocumented Features."
They already found that problem moving from Windows 9x to Windows XP. Of course it's going to happen again, but this time they can force the move to Vista.

I can't imagine MS turning away business from companies and the like who want 100 clients running XP for example, although I can understand them stopping retail sales. They usually maintain a 7 year life-cycle on their products, which would give XP a couple more years of support before they stop updates for it.
The problem with this latest OS release, is that unlike previous generations, people haven't rushed out to upgrade. The place I work at just upgraded 700 PCs last Summer, and opted for XP/Office 2k3 for example, and there will be others. Home computers bought from the last year or so ago till now tho have come with Vista as standard. I think by the time XP nears the end of its lifecycle, we'll all be using it, or whatever comes next. Vista will by then be much more fully supported in terms of software support (inc. bringing 16bit apps up-to-date), drivers, games and so on...it's just that right now, on the cusp between DX9 & DX10 games f.ex, there's really no reason to switch. And with the size and speed of Vista compared to XP and the performance hit out of the box on the same hardware, there's 2 big reasons not to.
It's just one of those long processes of slowly phasing out from one to another. Many of us are still using IDE drives and AGP GFX cards too, but next time we upgrade, that's sure to change as well. -------------

Well...when a company puts a product into its End-of-Life cycle there are a few steps. First is stopping sales of the product. Then after awhile they will stop coding updates. Some while after that they will not even support it at all. The whole process is a few years long for something like this.
In the end MS wants to force users to Vista and they will not change it no matter how many petitions are signed. Eventually Vista will get enough code updates to be stable and enough people will have new enough computers to run it to be not be a problem. At which point MS will doubtless release a new OS and start the whole process over again.
