Firstly, /wave I was coming here to ask a similar question as I'm doing a paper on perception/reality and how our views on the subject of reality is changing though the entertainment industry. Anyway, awesome topic. It seems mostly harmless except I gotta say, Soul Reaver, evolutionary "jumps" are usually mutations and our lack of number of fossils contributes to the imperfect picture. The gradual change in human evolution is becoming more and more apparent. Observe with an article released today.
Us as individuals have different bodies that perceive things in different ways. Our truths are based on assumptions that are based on assumptions. We use symbolism (language) that gets in the way of seeing the closest thing to the truth. The only thing we can do is make the best decision that we see fit. Religion is a mental crutch. It is scary to drop your religion and ask yourself what the truth is, only to find that the answer is having to know everything, which is a diffitult task. When you think you know everything, what do you base that on to realize that you do know everything? Assumptions based on assumptions. Enjoying life should be the number one goal, whatever gives you the most enjoyment. If it's pain, feel pain. If it's gaming, game on. Many of the decisions we make, while the origins of them are necessity and the evolved instinct that drives our thought process, are usually to make what we consider to have the best chance at getting the most enjoyment out of life. If suffering for afterlife is your thing, do it. It's when we start persecuting others and believing that we see the truth that the **** hits the fan.
The deeper discussion is of course that there are no decisions. The universe consists of matter (or maybe our definition is incomplete) but anyway, stuff makes up the universe. We are made up of this stuff and all it does is react to its envirionment. The reaction that lead to us eating a hamburger instead of a chicken sandwich was never a decision at all. Our past experiences lead up to that decision in a row of reactions that were unstoppable. If you think you see the path of the process and choose to stop it, well guess what, you're still a part of the process because you're just reacting.
