I'm new to this whole "shield tanking" thing since I have most of my SP in Amarr, but I wanted to try out a Broadsword that I finally got the skills for.
While I wait for Energy Grid Upgrades 4 to finish, I was playing with EFT in the hopes of getting a good tank. I've got shield operations and shield management 5 already, but for the rig slots I'm confused over which shield rig to use, the +capacity or +recharge. I can see the higher effective HP with the +capacity, but the +recharge doesn't seem to be calculated when I add Field Purgers.
Can someone with experience in shield tanking say which one is better for an active (2x invul II) tank? What about PDU vs SPR? Thanks in advance.

Passive tank the purgers should give you better sustained DPS tanked. ________

I'm an armor tanker, so I deal with Cap issues. Cap and shields work similarly.
The +recharge will give you a much higher peak recharge for your shield (20% reduction in shield recharge time), while a +capacity gives you a slight increase in peak recharge (15% increase in total shield capacity).
You're calling yourself an "active" tank and referring to 2x Invul - are you also using Shield Boosters? If so, you've got more options to look into: whether to use Operational Solidifier (15% shorter cycle = ~18% more boost but also the same amount of increased cap usage) or Capacitor Sa***uard (10% less cap usage for shield modules can help maintain a tank longer).
Finally, SPR is if you're actually going to the "Passive" side, while PDU is for the "Active" side - as a rough guide. The SPR seriously gimps your cap recharge, but provides an unbeatable increase to the base recharge, very useful for passive tanking. The PDU provides boosts across the board - including increasing available cap, and is a much better choice if you're boosting.
Hope these generic guidelines help :P

Edited by: MalVortex on 19/01/2008 02:19:08 Extenders will have less maximum tank than purgers, but extenders will give you more EHP and a larger buffer zone before the shield tank breaks; its possible that even on a high tank DPS setup, a large alpha strike can knock your shields below peak recharge and break your tank with less than theoretical DPS.
In practice, purgers are probably slightly better than extenders, although if you had to go pure extenders or extender+purger you probably wont see much of a difference.
Edit: Active tanking implies shield boosting. Active hardners are not considered active tanking, and shield passive resist modules are very, very rarely used - they are worse than single active modules (even with maximum shield compensation), and the active modules don't consume much cap and have low fitting requirements.
For maximum tanking, start stacking the SPRIIs. If your active tanking, PDUs are nice for the grid, cap, and shield bonus - a jack of all trades module. However, CPRs may be better if your looking to sustain your tank. A Shieldbooster helps remove their downside, and the -shield effect is stacking nerfed.

Rule of thumb:
Purgers for PVE Extenders for PVP
like with anything in eve there are exceptions. --------------------------------- There's a simple solution to every problem. It is always invariably wrong |

Ah, great info everyone. Yeah that "active tank" thing was a misnomer, and I thought that just meant clicky modules like armor hardeners. I guess that since I armor tank a repper is mandatory passive or active I left a booster out of the equation.
I think I'll just use EFT for fitting requirements and play with the active vs passive stuff myself. And because extenders are more PvP oriented, which is what I'm using this Broadsword for, I guess I'll go with them. Thanks again for your help!
