Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 24/01/2008 17:56:42 Guess the whining of one man can do that...
But strangely no comments on the violence? (that's what is causing the rows on this side of the ocean)
Its a game for crying out loud, yes it has graphic depictions of violence and sexual acts, the warning label on the box makes that quite clear i presume. Why buy it if you know it will either shock yourself or the child you're buying it for.
Should everything be as sweet and cudely as hello kitty? No, warning labels are sure to be on that package, if people don't read them before buying something their kid nagged about for months, then its their fault not the devoloper of the product.
The story of Mass Effect is apparently great (don't have a X360, hoping for a PC release)

"who is playing video games? adolescent males, not their dads" Lol so the approximatly 40% of the gaming population that is adult doesnt actualy exist? Ive played video games since i was about 5 and I dont see women as items. That chick hadnt even played the game FFS.
"boys that play video games cant tell the difference between the real world and video game experience" WTF!
Damn the polititions who keep attacking video games for making kids the way they are, its all down to bad parenting IMO
These people obviously havnt heard of EVE-Online, altough im sure something would sprout up about all the sex in this game, my god it makes me hot

"they see women as objects of desire"
What's wrong with that?
(it's kind of hard to remain serious hearing this woman speaking)
What about "The Witcher"? The hero in the game bangs someone every five mins.
Also, LOL, I love when the King says: "Silence! I'm a fvking King! I deserve some fvking respect!" - I mean it's hilarious.
So, going back to this woman on crusade against Mass Effect, I don't believe that, for example, the Terminator and Alien movies made me a slayer of man. Or a dangerous psychopath who axed his family after playing DOOM or Alone in the Dark.
Also, if a teenage boy wants **** he will be able to get it from about ten million web pages, he wouldn't need to convince his parents to buy Mass Effect only so he could peek.

So, if I'd go ahead, print a ton of leaflets about what sex is, basically, a crash course in sex education, and distribute them to school kids, in the USA, I'd be labeled a terrorist, or at least some big public threat, and sued or even jailed for "perverting the youth" ? Sheesh.
Sex bad, killing people good ! Nice work !

sounds like you summed it up quite nicely. Not that the Euro side of the atlantic is much better, the german media seem to have a very similar attitude to violence. (and their government right along with it)
I bet dutch primetime TV on some commercial channels would shock half of the people bashing mass effect into a coma.

What do you expect from the like's of that low-IQ trash channel some people call a news service. Fox news is nothing but a 24/7 tabloid channel for the sexually-repressed subhumans who get off on watching it.
Take for instance when that college girl who took nude photos of herself and made money off of a site got killed by some nut....Fox was all over that story for days and days and days. It was a blip everywhere else. Fox news is trash, has always been trash, will always be trash. And the majority of the people who watch it and take to heart everything said on it are trash.
For the record....I am not a 15 year old nor do I worship the devil, nor do I do drugs, nor do I wear spandex, and no I don't kill kitties for fun. And I have been playing videogames sense the first Atari.

I think Americans dont like to see any form of flesh except face and hands, and no more than 2.5 inches of neck. However somebody getting stabbed to death or shot in the head or somthing is fine.
Germans you can see as much sex as you like but they dont like the violence, so basicaly the oposite of the germans.
Or thats what I remember hearing on some interview a few months ago.

Actually most video game players are over the age of 18.
Try these demographics (apparently FOX cut their fact checking department):
Quote: 1. US computer and video game software sales grew six percent in 2006 to $7.4 billion û almost tripling industry software sales since 1996.
2. Sixty-seven percent of American heads of households play computer and video games. 3. The average game player is 33 years old and has been playing games for 12 years. 4. The average age of the most frequent game buyer is 38 years old. In 2007, 92 percent of computer game buyers and 80 percent of console game buyers were over the age of 18.
5. Eighty-five percent of all games sold in 2006 were rated "E" for Everyone, "T" for Teen, or "E10+" for Everyone 10+. For more information on ratings, please see www.esrb.org.
6. Eighty-six percent of game players under the age of 18 report that they get their parentsÆ permission when renting or buying games, and 91 percent say their parents are present when they buy games.
7. Thirty-six percent of American parents say they play computer and video games. Further, 80 percent of gamer parents say they play video games with their kids. Sixty-six percent feel that playing games has brought their families closer together.
8. Thirty-eight percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (31%) than boys age 17 or younger (20%).
9. In 2007, 24 percent of Americans over the age of 50 played video games, an increase from nine percent in 1999.
10. Forty-nine percent of game players say they play games online one or more hours per week. In addition, 34 percent of heads of households play games on a wireless device, such as a cell phone or PDA, up from 20 percent in 2002.

There is a lot of that to be sure in the US but FOX takes it to a whole other level that is frankly appalling.
And there are still some few news shows that actually try to deliver news in a balanced and thorough manner. Just most Americans don't watch those shows sadly preferring the latest scoop on Brittany Spears.

Name one I dare you. You can't. They're either bashing each other over a political party, finding tabloid stuff, or trying to talk the country into another recession. That line is used by people who can't stand the idea that a news agency isn't kissing up to their democratic party.
News agencies are businesses and they put what sells ratings on their screens. Thats why we dont hear any good news from them. Thats why Iraq suddenly disappeared from their top 10 list. Thats why Brittany is always on the news. Groups like CNN and CBS get their kick from politics and "cultural sources" which is another way of say "tabloids from Europe". Fox has them beat and does all of the above which is why they have the highest ratings out of any agency.
They give people what they want and sadly thats not always a good thing.
You want solid news, go read a Wall Street Journal.
As usual the OP failed to mention that the reason for the outrage was the "digital nudity" and sex (which Gods of War had to deal with) being marketed towards underage kids (age old complaint for about anything) not against the game itself. Could have easily spared themselves by allowing it to be turned off by the parents who are the ones complaining about it and sold it to all ages just fine. Needless to say if the kid is still under 18 its still the parents choice to chose what they want their kids to get into.
Mass Effect is an awesome game btw.

They did, or rather they went after Nintendo itself (Mario was THE game back then). It was called "watching your kid waste away". Kids were spending hours and hours playing games instead of doing other stuff and getting fat and lazy (or so they claimed) and ABC/CBS/NBS all had hour long specials about this "problem". This of course was during the age when parents wanted to be their kids' friend instead of their parent. Like all things game related it blew over because the parents started acting like parents. This is no different really and will blow over.
