At the moment I'm playing two accounts. I've heard form corpmates that they have as many as eight. So I'm looking at that 42,000 concurrent user mark and suspecting that we're still at 10k-20k players it's just that most people have upgraded to multiple accounts. That being said:
How many of you run multiple concurrent accounts or have multiple subscriptions?
I found the need for a second account to scout for myself in lowsec/0.0 the driving factor. Also I hear it's common to have a second account for salvaging/looting for mission runners. And finally I understand many users mine with one character and haul with an alt. On the one hand I'm happy that EVE is getting more money from all this, but on the other hand I can see how this also generates a heavier server load and decreases the quality of gameplay.
Then again, I sometimes find myself wondering if there is something wrong with EVE because it encourages people to have multiple accounts?

I'd imagine that only 15% of EVE has 2 accounts
then maybe 2% with 3 accounts and 1% with more than 3
But then there are also 1000s of chinese isk farmers, that aren't really individuals

... or if gameplay was immersive and involved enough to require all of your attention on one account. Healbots / buffbots / hauler alts / cyno alts / etc. FTL.

I don't think this is a rant, and I don't think there is anything wrong with EVE because people can have more than one account.
I mean, you can have 2 WoW accounts if you want, but people don't because it's possible to "train" (*cough* grind *cough*) as many characters as you want.
I do however (as the above may have indicated) beleive that EVE has somewhat tripped up in that you can only train 1 skill at a time per account. This could be taken 2 ways.
The first: Skills in EVE train in "real-tim", so people could have 1-2 chars all training their abilities to "uber" levels while they fart around on their main.
And the second: CCP are greedy buggers who won't let you have more than one character (effectively anyway, no point in having someone sitting there not skilling) at a time so you have to pay more each month to enjoy mining, trading and PvP all at the same time.
Personally it doesn't worry me, because I couldn't be bothered with 2 characters. --------------------------- ---------------------------

Coorect me if I'm wrong, but is it not the case that you can't play more than one character on a WoW account at once? That being the case, only one character per account can skill at any given time, since you have to grind for XP?
So in fact WoW is less flexible than EvE, since EvE alts can be used will another character on the same account is actually skilling.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

2 accounts here and pretty much everyone one I know and have ever known in EVE has at least 1 alt and possibly a 3rd for the purposes of selling later on.
With a 2nd account, command skills are cheaper than faction mods and often better.
I have 2 monitors on my machine, so I can PVP on one and rat with the other or have them both PVP'ing / ratting.
Seeing as you are splitting the wealth between yourself, you lose nothing.
You also distribute liability of loss with two accounts.
With a second account, I ALWAYS have a scout if I cba to use one (Lately, I haven't and its showing up as lost isk rather than lost ibis's .. opps, but no more )
The 'Power of 2' promotion must have upped the numbers as well.
Not that any of this speculation matters in the least.
40k of accounts logging in is 40k of resources being used.
Just think if all the players logged in at the same time. Cor, 40k is nothing. Good thing the World is Round and at least 25% of it is sleeping at any given moment.

I've got two, (well, three, but one inactive), but rarely play them as multitasking operation.
The main reason for me to have more then one is the ability to be in more then one place at the same time.
It's nice to be able to log on second combat character is the other is stuck/too damn far away or doesn't fly the ship you need.

Two accounts here. The main character and an industrial alt. I didn't wanted to hold my main char's training to push industrial skills on it. But I rarely play with both at the same time. |

I have 3 accounts, two for shooting one for invention and such.
You won't get a representative sample of the userbase by asking here, though. The kind of players who are likely to visit a game's official forums is the same kind more likely to have multiple accounts. It's a bit like going to a stadium asking if there are any football fans.

4 accounts....
2 for 0.0 fighting (1 capital/bs pilot, 1 small-ship pilot) 1 empire industrial (build and haul stuff for the others) 1 empire mission runner (making all my money)
The mission runner would be in 0.0 too if CCP hadn't made high-sec mission running more profitable than any 0.0 activities.....
For 0.0, running with only one account is pretty horrible. Apart from needing a scout once in a while to move, sometimes you get camped in for days, meaning you're completely unable to play.

I have 4 accounts. 1 Gallente/Minmatar char 1 Caldari char Those are the ones i only really use.
I love skiling up new chars for some reason so im breeding a specced gallente alt for pure combat and a freighter alt for selling when i cba to fly that silly slow freighter anymore.

I finally gave in to the dark side and created a second (combat-centric) account a bit less than 10 months ago, to complement my "jack of all trades" main (this one).
To be honest, I haven't been using the alt much, and I was even pondering selling it a few months ago. But then again, selling/buying characters is not my style, so I rather let it slide into suspension with a long skill. Right now, my second account is in a hiatus, training (of all things) Marauders to L5
