Just watched Wing Commander, was bored and well had nothing to watch. The ships Rapier and Broadsword were both mentioned, didnt really pay much attention, but i wonder where if ccp has used the names from ships in other films.

The fact that you just referenced Wing Commander, and only referenced it is that pretty awful movie makes me very very sad......and angry.

That movie was so screwed over by studio budgeting and editorial influence, though. It could have been totally awesome, but Chris Roberts wasn't able to really bring his vision properly to the screen. Probably shouldn't have been made then, but hey... that's Hollywood.

Considering that rapiers and broadswords are, well, swords, and have been around for centuries, you really can't say that CCP got them from movies. The same is true for just about all the ship names. They're from myths, religious ideas, and the natural world. So they're all pretty old.

you may be amazed to notice that there are other minmatar ship names like the rapier... like the claymore, stiletto and so on.
I cant see any other connection that they could be named by, other than that they're also names from sci-fi films.

I think someones irony detector had a major malfunction...
Also, there IS a real Wing commander movie, with good acting and a superb story. It is called Wing Commander IV ;) (Preferably the highres DVD edition)
There is no 'n' in turret There is no 'r' in faction There is no 'a' in Scorpion There is no 'e' in Caldari There is no makeup in rogue drones |

Rapier and Broadsword are.. swords. I don't think Wing Commander is somehow being more original. Last I checked, they don't own the copyright to HORNET either.
If you want to know what sci-fi EVE borrows most from, its Babylon 5. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

well. eve is certainly influenced by various sci-fi stuff... but i dont think "rapier" and "broadsword" are indicating this. both are just variations of the butterknife, which pretty much makes them everyday home appliances.
you dont say your kitchen is matrix-influenced, when youre out of spoons, do you?
stuff i spotted that got me thinking was masters of orion and dr.strangelove.

Now this is one of the few areas you can consider sci-fi sources. I'm sure there were many games/movies/novels that inspired ship designs and mods.

The Sulaco in Aliens was a cruiser, and it did have railguns. Those two big gun-looking things are PPCs(particle projection cannons). Most of it's firepower was in the form of missiles.
I am such an Aliens fanboi...in a closet somewhere I have schematics for it.

well, Star Wars had interdictor class ships whose whole purpose was to bring ships flying passed them out of hyperspace :)
Nearly everything today is based off of something in history, it's not a new theory :)
Tolkein is credited with a LOT of influence in nearly everything fantasy, and rightly so. (everquest, warcraft, d&d, etc) Bladerunner is credited with nearly everything cyberpunk (firefly, neocron, etc) Star Wars is credited with most things scifi (eve, etc) _______________________________________________ Minmatar will always go faster than you, get over it. |

I think so too. When I heard ship names in B5 such as Hyperion and Archon I thought of eve straight away. The blue/red shift for the warp is also familiar.

Edited by: Plutonian on 26/01/2008 23:40:56 Working on a start-up game project, I was given the job of finding original names for over 1000 modules and ships. Not an easy task. No matter how cool and unknown you think the name is, someone has used it somewhere.
Thunderbolt, piranha, raven, leviathan-class anything, rapier, broadsword, etc... these are all the 'usual suspects' in a sci-fi setting. Almost unavoidable.
EDIT: I remember when Firefly came out Stephen Robertson (a designer of I-War and EoC) remarking on many similarities... from a ship which looked surprisingly like a Dreadnaught corvette in firefly to the main character being named Mal (main character in EoC was named Cal and similar).
There is little new under the sun in this field.
