I cant see any other connection that they could be named by, other than that they're also names from sci-fi films.

Lets see.. Firefly: Sept 2002 Eve: May 2003
Not sure? :)
Somehow I think EVE had been in production a while in Sept 2002 ;) ---

Well, his name is actually Malcolm. Mal is just short for Malcolm. I wouldn't call that a influence any more than saying a movie with a character named Ted is influenced by something with a character named Fred.

Hell i saw a couple shipnames in stargate sg1 and atlantis multiple times. This is what happens when a kestrel with thermal missiles declares war on earth |

They did experiencing some desync when jumping in Wing Commander, system not loading proper and got ganked one after the other. So I guess gamedesign conspired with fate.

Wing Commander 4 (the 6-CD-version) was the second computer game I ever bought (the first one was Outpost 1). Sadly, I seem to have misplaced the disks, failed to make any backup copies, and I can not find it ANYWHERE for sale. What is this "hi-res DVD version" you speak of, and where can I find it ?

A quick look on Google and I found that it's apparently abandonware, which means you can legally download it and run it under DOSbox.

WC1 might be, but not WC4. I've "researched" WC4 myself since the last post. I've seen Amazon offers for roughly 80$, and eBay for around 50$ "BIN" for the DVD double-sided version, but let's just say the Amazon offer is a bit over my acceptable limit, and the eBay one isn't shipping to where I live (or they might ship it, but for an absurd extra price).

I see one flaw in your title actually, sure eve is probably inspired by many sci-fi flicks, but if you want to take Wing Commander as an inspiration then it's a computer game or more to the point a series of computer games that kicked ass most of the time that inspired that travesty of a movie.

AFAIK, the DVD Version of WC4 was only available as part of the 2nd generation Creative Labs DVD Rom Kits, (2x DVD Awesome) think it was around 1998 when i got mine, and the DVD itself was double sided, and really badly made so it didn't last very long :/

None of the names are ripped from movies per se. Some of the names simply happen to be common in other movies because they're applicable. in essence, it's better to say the movies have ripped their ship names from common themes in our inventions, discoveries and nature.
Amarrans' ships are usually all religon-related. Apoc, Armageddon, Damnation..so on.
Gallente are usually mythology based (the muse Lachesis, Ishtar, etc).
Caldari are mainly animals (mostly birds, but a few others like Scorpion) or mythological animals (phoenix, leviathan).
And the minmatar..matching their ships, the names are a mishmash of different things. They're mainly storms/wins (typhoon, cyclone, tempest), but also use destructive names like stabber, burst, rupture (along with weapons that can cause them like Stilletto, Scythe)...and viscious animal names...Wolf and Jaguar.
Each race sits within it's common theme, usually. The fact that other sci fi movies use the same names often is more because the names simply sound cool or fit more than any borrowing they may do from other sci fi crap.

Not sure if anyone's read the Night's Dawn trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton, but a LOT of ideas from those books appear in EVE - warp scrambling, drones, neural-interfacing with ships, e-war, and to a limited extent asteroid mining, etc
Not all of this stuff was first seen in these books, but I suspect a lot of inspiration was taken from them by CCP. ====== Proud pilot of the 'Drainpipe of Doom' |

Well, e-war exists in the modern day, so I don't think it's from any novel.

A lot of these terms are used in a lot of different sci fi books, movies and games. It's these 'sci fi themes' that people put into the books to make them sci fi.

I think B-5 is perhaps the most direct SF-show inspiration source (the Jove = The Vorlons, Amarr and Minmetar = Centauri and Narn, outposts and starbases with lots of turrets, real red to blue doppler-shift effects for warp travel, semi-intertial flight and combat mechanics, etc) Planet-Killer supercapitals (you know the Titan DDD should be able to wipe out a planet if they could code it without wrecking the database.) and others I don't have time to think of right now. Not quite right.
Nidhoggur is from Scandinavian/Icelandic mythology. A beast that sits at one of the springs that feeds the worldtree, eating on the trees roots. Hoggur means "striker" (sort of) while Nid hard to translate, meaning something like evil, curse/cursed, atrocity, despicable or foul (it's both a term for a particular evil deed, and a form of black/curse magic). ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. Edited by: Doddy on 28/03/2008 20:05:33 Is this really worthy of a thread?? Of course eve is inspired by sci-fi films, would be kinda crap if it wasn't tbh. There hasn't been an original story in about 3000 years so i dont think ccp would be able to come up with a totally original background for an entire universe. Ship names is particularly obvious. In real life ships/aircraft etc are often named in classes, where "sister" vessels have related names. In warfare these names should always have martial/uplifting (or predatory animal) etc names. The fact that ccp carried this ancient tradition on as did several sci-fi tv series/films/books/games is hardly surprising.
Do you really think ccp went "lets call this new fangled dictor thing a broadsword cos there is a ship type called that in wing-commander" rather than "lets call this new fangled dictor thing a broadsword seeing as we have a mimatar naming convention relating to swords (stilletto/sabre/scimitar/claymore) and broadsword hasn't been used yet".??

broadsword, etc... these are all the 'usual suspects' in a sci-fi setting. Almost unavoidable.
There is little new under the sun in this field.
