We'd need to separate it into two categories: the Field Artillery ships (the jury-rigged Industrials) with some kind of small anti-frig weaponry and the need to carry both small/med and XL ammunition, and the Heavy Artillery ships, which require special XXL ammunition and the use of a target painter.
Perhaps the Heavy Arty could have a target lock range bonus, so that it could engage at ranges up to 450km - but this is a bit of a stretch. ----------------------------------------------------- With the guidance of our Lord and our Emperor, I shall crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentations of their women. |

I like this topic. I was thinking what if they had two ships along the lines of destroyer/frigate that can hit from extreme ranges.
Lets say you do add a second T2 Destroyer that can fit the "Big Gun" and a t2 Frigate that can do something else from extreme range. But not in the sense of damage. They have bombs that have an AoE. Why not a smaller less powerful AoE along the lines of Dampening, Tracking Disrupting, ECM and Target Painting.
So lets say you have this new arti-ewar frig that can snipe its AoE from 200+km and you have the new destroyer class launching the equivilant of a citedel torpedo or something.
Or you could even have the destroyer and frig work together in order to function properly in the sense of what someone was saying above I think.
Obviously CCP looking into addressing the problem of assault frigs in PvP and this idea of a small ship that can hurt large targets would be interesting.
I however do not like the idea of it to be easily skilled for. It seems like ships that has been mentioned in this tread would need serious skill training.
All in all some form of arti-frig/destroy would be fun in my opinion. Maybe different ammo for different affects... AoE warp sram/web round anyone?

Please clarify to those who may not know, the issue with the assault frigates and how main guns can be factored into adjustments to their overall combat strategy.

how about if you have to load the gun with a cap charge and a round, if you put a larger charge in you get longer range, smaller round less damage, should give some good versatility for most situations. you would however need a ammo hauler for those extended longrange high damage battles.

That could work out, but I believe that the simpler thing to do would just be to have the ready-made ammo so as to expand the research field for these ships. I might be willing to trade the entire concept of the Main Gun in for a Supercapital Missile Ship that would essentially perform the same role at the same ranges... and be more easily countered by anti missile equipment.
Another good use for the Main Gun would be to warp 100K + from a gate that has an interdiction bubble set up and destroy the structure that produces it.

You could go with something along the lines of with Wep Upg V that you can fit a single T2 long range, Battleship weapon on each racial destroyer (Beam, Arty, Rail)
It would need firstly a role bonus of the ability to fit the BS weapon and secondly a targetting range bonus based upon level.
The destroyer gets a 500% Bonus to damage output but a 50% Rate of Fire decrease that can be lowered slightly per level of 'x' ship.
This would allow the ship to have a ridiculous alpha volley but not be some insane minature Abaddon,Rokh,Tempest type thing.
Make it a paperweight tank and not very 'nano'able

A paper tank is the thing for newbies, heavier tanks would be for the whole Dread-killing stuff.
