for those too lazy to read past the headline, this is where it'll all be happening.
apparently it scrapes the Gnutella network, removes bogus files (largely put up by the RIAA, hilariously) tacks some ads on the GUI and wraps the files in DRM.
other than it's inevitable failure, the whole thing seems to be legit. mental. [IMAGE REMOVED] |

Quote: Labels back away from Qtrax January 28, 2008 05:47pm
THREE of the "big four" record labels have reportedly denied signing any deals with free music download service Qtrax.

Or from the same paper the OP linked:
Quote: Problems hit first free music file-sharing site Qtrax January 28, 2008
The first legal music file-sharing service that would have allowed music lovers unlimited free songs appeared to be unravelling today, 24 hours after it was announced with much fanfare in Cannes.
Three of the four major record labels that were supposed to have agreed deals with the new venture, called Qtrax, denied that contracts had been signed, putting a potentially large dent in its promised catalogue of more than 25 million songs.

free downloading of music can only be small scale, the moment they lose too much money people will just stop releasing songs and only songs from people that truly enjoying making music and not making money will bring our albums, at there own cost!
im not saying iv not downloaded the odd mp3, but they need to make money somewhere for people to cover the costs of makings cd/recording songs, paying artists etc.

Qtrax was supposedly going to pay for the music via advertising revenue. Whether it would have been sufficient to pay for it all I have no idea but the did not mean for artists to not got a dime.

true, but the amount of adds to cover them all would need to be pretty high, and might even annoy people to the point of paying for it lol.

As record companies are currently setup I do not believe the ad revenue would be sufficient. But this is more the anachronistic nature of megalithic record companies who frankly exist to serve themselves more than they do to serve the needs of artists.
Talk to most artists who have dealt with record labels and they will tell you how flat out awful they are. Record companies have determined what the public listens to far more than the merits of an individual artist. If a label decides to heavily promote an artist they are in luck. Most are SOL no matter how good their music may be. Indeed, record labels manufacture bands for mass consumption (e.g. New Kids on the Block).
As a result I was surprised at the OPs link as I cannot see the labels signing up for such a thing. Those guys are going to fight this every inch of the way because their very existence depends on the status quo. Given how powerful and entrenched they are it is scary to wonder how it will all pan out. I can only hope that the world and nature of music publishing is a force of nature that they simply cannot overcome and they will be left in the dustbin of history.
Some new model needs to emerge. Any "free" music site will need to share the ad revenue directly to the artists based on number of downloads/plays. The existing labels can turn themselves into promoters paid by the artist to help with advertising and/or setting up concert gigs. It's up to the artist to decide what they will pay for that service assuming they want it at all. That is the reverse of today where the artist needs the label and generally has the contract dictated to them whether they like it or not.

QTrax on the surface seems to be less "ready" in the legal department than they originally claimed, and the use of DRM pretty much kills it for a lot of potential users, BUT, it's no doubt this is the direction music distribution will be heading, and if QTrax fails, someone else will make it fly.

This could also be like that one band that put its new album or song for free on the internet. However, it was in a very low sampling rate and not even close to CD quality.

Thats DRM for you. Apple, being smart arses, insist on using a different kind of DRM to the rest of the industry, and this is what you get... ------

Radiohead?
funnily enough, they still made a fairly substantial profit from the "pay what you want, even if it's nothing" 'experiment':
Quote: "Radiohead's management have not released official sales figures, claiming that the Internet-only distribution was intended to boost sales of the physical album. Yet according to Yorke, Radiohead's profits from the digital download of In Rainbows outstripped combined profits from digital downloads of all of the band's other studio albums."
also:
Quote: "I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one. And, yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say '**** you' to this decaying business model."
Artists wern't exactly getting a good deal from CD sales anyway, but the eruption of the Digital Download scene has basically allowed them to skip them altogether and make much more profit whilst charging much less for their music.
