Please try to delete/rename your settings folder, make sure you have the latest graphic drivers and double check your settings are set to low and see how it runs. If you are still having issues please remember to file a technical petition and attach a copy of your dxdiag. |

Originally by: Dr Fighter i run eve in classic mode and i too get the ever increasing memory thing. I run eve windowed at 1920x1200 and i found that if eve gets a little graphically laggy to just minimize the client and maximize after, this seems to reset the memory down to like 50m and it slowly starts to creep up again.
Technical explanation for this is that Windows is unloading all graphic related stuff out of the memory when a program is minimized. Therefor some programs also need some time to reload after minimizing, games which are using the hl2 engine are a good example.
The memory of EVE is growing slowly because its loading the models and textures which are used into the RAM and is not unloading them directly again so it is possible to excess them fast if they are needed a second time, after a model/texture isn't used for a certain amount of time it gets unloaded again. But because a lot of models/textures are used really often the memory is slowly growing.
EVE should use, if it is minimized, not more that 50MB of your RAM. If this is not the case, you should check your drivers and hardware - EVE is just triggering a defect of an other component of your PC in this case. __________________________ CCP Sputnik CCP Quality Assurance QA Engineering |

The memory appears to be reset but that is not the case, myc omp will still freeze up normally from expended memory. I used MS's process tree software - an the memory is still allocated to even even though the task manager says it was reset. If you notice, the the memory in the process list may go down, but the pagefile has not.
The pagefile is the Virtual Memory of your PC which is a special section on your hard drive which is used by the os to load stuff fast which was loaded into your RAM but isnt used atm. __________________________ CCP Sputnik CCP Quality Assurance QA Engineering |

Edited by: CCP Sputnik on 01/02/2008 10:42:20 Thanks guys for posting all this information.
Because it seems to be a problem of special hardware - software combinations it would be nice if you could help us to pin the problem down.
Could you please: - Make sure that you have the Mem Usage Column activated (View -> Select Columns...). - Do you have enough space on your hard drive for the virtual memory left? - Check how much virtual memory is availably (Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance -> Settings -> Advanced -> Virtual memory) it should be at lest 2 times your RAM size. - Do you have audio enabled in EVE? If yes how many clients have audio enabled?
And now I would like to have some informations about your machines: - Which Windows are you using? 32bit or 64Bit version? - Which video adapter and sound adapter? - Do you have a virus scanner running and which virus scanner is it?
Thanks in advance for all the answers.
PS. I will maybe add some more questions later. __________________________ CCP Sputnik CCP Quality Assurance QA Engineering |

Thanks again guys that you still helping me to pin down this defect.
======================================================================= = at first: ======================================================================= If ran some tests and my results ON MY MACHINE are: - Memory is resetting after minimizing - 2 Premium clients running fine, first Client used 650Mb 2nd 500mb at start and growing very slowly, had also running my development environment at the same time and windows started to swap, but no problems
(Ive stopped the test afert around 30minutes and the clients RAM usage had leveled off at around 800Mb nr1 and 700mb nr2)
Here some infos out of my DXDiag file:
------------------ System Information ------------------ Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254) Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz (2 CPUs) Memory: 2048MB RAM DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Wait a second.. with 8GB of RAM you're supposed to have 16GB(!) of swap? You can't be serious. More RAM is supposed to result in less swap usage.
The OS is the cause for the swapping, and generally Windows is swapping stuff out of your memory after a certain amount of time and not because of to less memory.
Which means: Something isn't used for a certain amount of time -> Windows is swapping it into the virtual memory/pagefile
There is an option which should shut the swapping down, but it hadn't any effect when I tried it out the last time. Just try it out yourself (Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance -> Settings -> Advanced -> Virtual memory -> tick: No Paging file)
For anybody who has less that 4GB RAM my commendation is to just stay with the max pagefile size of 4092MB (yeah sorry missed to mention this, the pagefile has a max size of 4GBs so all of you with more than 2GBs of RAM should just set the size on max).
=========================================================================== = third =========================================================================== Some new questions for you guys: - Who of you guys is running a 64Bit version of Windows ?? - What are the sound option of our EVE clients (please list all of them if you run multiple clients)??

My vista box runs two clients
Audio enabled Hardware Accelaration = on Audio output driver = Direct sound Audio output device = Speakers ( realtek high definition)
Could you please test this: - first disable Audio on both clients - and afterwards run one client with Audio disabled and one with Audio enabled.
And see if EVE is still eating memory?

Set swap to RAM + 11 Megs. Windows won't use more than that.
Maybe a good solution if the "No paging file" option isn't working, don't have enough RAM to test it on my machine, so hopefully you guys can help me out testing if this is working.
- thanks in advance. __________________________ CCP Sputnik CCP Quality Assurance QA Engineering |
